    Okawa Roll was the favorite.

Heard the couple next to us at the bar ordering a Rock N Roll and sounded good, so we thought we'd give it a shot. Wasn't our favorite.

There are other places that are the best bang for the buck on Santee Sushi, but can't wait to come back with the whole family and try the Hibachi grill. That appeared reasonably priced....

...Since having started this review months and months ago Okawa has become one of our go to places.

It is a great Hibachi grill spot for east county families who don't want to travel all the way to other well known places. We came for my sister's birthday and everyone from the 3 year old to the birthday girl were entertained by the grillside dining and the cooks.

About a month ago the man and I were trying really hard to catch a late meal together and Okawa was willing to keep their doors open for us long enough to order three different rolls and scarf them down.

One of their sushi chefs trained in New York and you can see his skill level if you sit at the bar. They are continually adding items to the menu. I was pleasantly surprised last time to see they added oyster shots, a fave of mine.

Other sushi places in Santee can be really loud, but Okawa is nice and mellow with a friendly staff.

Hibachi!!! Saki! Sushi! I mean really, what more could you want from a restaurant? Their sushi is exceptional, their service is pleasing, and saki... well you know how much I love my booze!

So if you've ever been to Benihana's, this place is the same type of place. For those that haven't, they use a hibachi grill, while is just a flat plane surface where they cook the foods, right in front of you, straight onto your plate.

The show this trip was as great as ever. The cook has this quirky and polite humor that only those with an accent can pull off. He continually entertained us not only with his humor, but with his spot-on hand-eye coordination. He could cook, chop, flip, and dice things with such precision and in record timing.

As for the food, the food was divine. I could tell it was all fresh ingredients, and all freshly made in front of me. My bonzai chicken was dilectable. It was properly seasoned with enough pepper without an overkill, and a teriyaki sauce that wasn't too sweet or over salted. The chicken was cooked throughout. There were no undercooked portions and no burnt spots.

You HAVE to go to this place! And if you've never been to a hibachi grill, all the more reason to come here!

Went here for Sushi and we were very impressed. Fresh delicious sushi and the rolls were awesome. The mango roll was delishhhhh... Nice size nagiri and decent customer service.

I was going to give them 3 stars but they were very accommodating so 4 stars it is.

My girlfriend and I came here for a celebratory dinner. We had never been here before. My girlfriend loves sushi and I am not particularly fond of it having tried it once and having a very bad experience with it.

The outside of the restaurant is very plain, but once you walk in the atmosphere complete changes. The atmosphere is very sensual and somewhat romantic. The room is quite dark but that just adds to the ambience. Upon entering, we were greeted and seated. We decided to sit at the bar and were able to watch the sushi being made and served. Our drink order was taken as soon as we were seated and came literally one minute later. The sushi chef was extremely friendly and engaged us in conversation and answered all our questions. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer (it was good but I have tasted better). We ordered the California and crunchy rolls. Both were divine.

At the end, we also ordered two salmon sushi. Having not eaten sushi very much I was a bit concerned with trying this but was delightfully surprised. The salmon was fresh and delicious. I took the entire thing and literally swallowed it whole.

Overall, the eating experience was amazing. We both thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will definitely be going back. We want to go back with a group of friends so we can sit at the grills and watch our food cooked right in front of us.

We were seated as soon as we walked in, our waiter was at the table before we were, drinks came out within a minute, appetizer followed a few minutes later. Then he was waiting on us as soon as we were ready to order and the food came out very fast. He was very friendly. Everything we had was very very tasty. Miso soup, calamari and 3 rolls. Good price, great service, great food.

I really don't understand how this place has a four star review...this place sucked!  First off, I had a dirty, sticky plate that I immediately had to get switched.  For a hibachi place, this place is tiny!  It only had maybe 4 or 5 hibachi tables.  The entertainment was lacking...the cooks had no personality and basically just cooked our food, boring!  The fried rice was bland.  The steak was bland...my 2 year old carnivore son spit it out, what does that tell you?  I ordered calamari as an appetizer.  I got some calamari rings that looked like onion rings, which I swear I've seen in the frozen section at costco.  This place is not worth the drive, the time or the money!  I brought left overs home because hibachi places always give you tons of food...my leftovers are still in the fridge; I went Saturday night, it is now Tuesday.  What does that tell ya'?

    Fantastic.
I have been here a couple of times and can't wait to make our next visit!!
Sit at the hibachi, it is worth the extra price. It is also worth it to order two meats, as it is only a few dollars more than ordering only one meat.
Scallops are to die for. Large, tender, flavorful. The soup is delicious and the 'show' is very entertaining.
Please don't sit at the hibachi and ignore the chef as he is preparing your food and entertaining you... it just seems rude to talk to each other and not even participate in the experience; in my humble opinion.

It is a small restaurant so the smoke can be overwhelming. The staff was friendly and helpful. The prices were good. The food was decent but the meat was bland. We had steak, chicken, and shrimp. The steak and the chicken really could have used some extra flavor. I would opt to try another place before going back.

Wow, you would never think this place is so good by the front. It just looks like a small sushi place but is much more. They have an excellent menu that consists of fish, steak, sushi, shrimp, chicken, vegi meals and much more
We have been going there for our celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries for a while now. They have a Benihana style cooking arrangement so you get a nice show with your dinner. (for much less than Benihana!)
They also have a little sushi bar that is usually quick and all of the cooks are very friendly and helpful. They can help you find the style rolls you are looking for and have great suggestions and hidden personal rolls.
The place is awesome for the price!!

Excellent sushi, fantastic service...we were very impressed!! A def hidden gem in Santee!! We tried about 8 different rolls between us all, and they were all amazing making it hard to choose a favorite!  Standouts were the one night stand with its unique basil pesto like drizzle, and the lobster roll!  We would definitely recommend this place and plan to return!!

This place is great! I've been here a few times and the staff always remembers us. The food is as. Good as any of the hibachi places around the county and the prices are more reasonable. And the fact that i dont have to drive to misson valley is awsome. Food wise: The Santee Roll is amazing! I've had a few different menu options and never been disappointed. And of course, there's the show that my kids LOVE!!. It's not cheap, but a pretty fun night out with a date or the family.

Don't allow the good reviews fool you!! This was the worst sushi I've ever had. I got the dragon roll, and the tempura shrimp roll. The dragon roll was mediocer at best, the rolls were loose, and presentation was weak. The dragon roll looked nothing like what is pictured here on yelp. The shrimp tempura roll was so discusting I spit the second to last piece out and left the last one on the plate to go in the garbage where it belongs!!!! I felt the oil used to fry the shrimp was old, and needed to be changed. The tempura crust was nasty!! $7.50 for a beer? at least the hot green tea was only a dollar. What a waste of time to drive all the way out here... The best thing about this place was seeing it in my rear view mirror as I was leaving!!

My boyfriend first introduced me to this restaurant, and it was love at first taste. The service is amazing, and the food even better. I have sat at the sushi bar, at a table, and at the hibachi grill...every time is better than the next.

During our first visit to the hibachi grill, I had sake poured into my mouth by the chef. First of all, that's awesome, secondly, he has great aim. We had chicken and shrimp. Both cooked to perfection. The fried rice was so flavorful, and probably the best I have had. The atmosphere was fun, inviting, and delicious.

Their sushi rolls are to die for as well. I have had yellow tail, tuna, fatty tuna, salmon, among many others, and all of them were fresh and tasted as sushi should always taste. We sake bombed the last time we went, and it was great because it was happy hour. We got a large beer and a hot sake for $5.50. Now that is how you sake bomb. They saw what we were doing, brought the appropriate cups and actually taught us the correct way to do it! So much fun, and needless to say, feeling good after we left. :)

Overall, I recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to have a fun, reasonably priced asian meal. Benihana...but better.

This place is good times anyway you slice it...The chefs are fun and like to party so buy them sake and take shots with them. It always seems to be more fun that way! Only downfall is the beer is a little expensive for Santee.

We were really craving some hibachi action last night, but it was 8pm on a Friday and we didn't want to wait in line.  So we wound up wandering out to this place, because it was well-reviewed and we thought it might be low-key.

As it turns out, that was exactly the case.  The drive was quite pleasant, once we got out of the city proper, The restaurant was not crowded, and while the chef was not the most gifted I've ever seen, he was also quite young, and (I suspect) just beginning the trade, and certainly enthusiastic.  Although some of the things that came out of his mouth left me suspecting he has a running bet with himself that he can say anything he wants and nobody will notice.  (I consider that a good thing, personally.)

And while he might not have great aim with the baby corn bits, he certainly does know how to cook them.  Dinner was fantastic; I have no complaints about anything we were served.

This place was quality, and, as restaurants of this type go, not too bad price-wise.  I recommend it.

Really random location in a strip mall with a deceptively small storefront.  I came on a wednesday evening and it was almost empty when I get there at 5:30 with one group seated around the hibachi..  I opted for a private table with a view of the hibachi.  I was pleasantly surprised to find it was happy hour and a large Sapporo+Hot Sake was $5.50.  It was the first time I've had sake and I thought it was really good.

The sushi at the bar looked extremely fresh, and although I didn't have sushi, everything I had was good quality. I was impressed by the attentive servers, and fast service. I ordered the Hibachi shrimp dinner and was not disappointed.  The Hibachi soup was very good, and everything looked great, and tasted awesome. I loved the fried rice, it was very similar to benihanas, as was the salad. I was a little disappointed that their ginger dressing isn't as good as benihanas, considering I drown all my food in it. The chow mein that it came with was sweet and filling, and i absolutely loved the hibachi vegetables- perfectly grilled and the marinade/sauce on them was excellent. It was a huge plus having multiple servers checking on me and making sure I had everything and that it was good. My shrimp was a little on the tough/dry side but tasted really good.  It was crazy how fast my food came out, the soup and salad came and a minute later the rest showed up, I didn't even have a chance to eat it one-by-one.

From my private table perspective it seemed to take a while to be served at the hibachi grill, but they gave an entertaining show for sure. Prices were definitely cheaper than benihanas for a very similar experience. Id come back!

My husband and I have only been here once with a group of friends, but are definitely going back soon. We sat by the hibachi grill. I ordered chicken and my husband had sushi. The fried rice was good, as well as the chicken. I'm not a sushi fan, but my husband agreed that it was one of the better sushis he's ever had.

From looking at the outside of this place, you would think it was some run down, hole in the wall restaurant, but in all actuality it is very nice inside.

The thing I really enjoyed about Okawa, is that it's a fun place. It's a little more lively than your typical restaurant for dinner. It's fun to watch them cook on the grill in front of you. It makes for a better experience then just sitting at a table waiting for your food to be delivered as you child whines because he's hungry.

Loved this place! We went here on Father's day, and were there before it got to busy.  Prices are average for Sushi, but they were able to make rolls with crab in them gluten free by using real crab instead of imitation crab. I thought that was very nice!  The tables looked fun too, and they cook the food and do a little show like ShoGun, or Benihana...

Nice that Santee has a place like this!

I came here with my aunts. WE HAD A BLAST! We made reservations for the hibachi grill, so we were seated almost immediately. We didn't have to wait long for our chef to make his way to our table & start.  We ordered the calamari for an app (I wasn't a huge fan of it. I felt like it was those generic, rings that you can get in a grocery store). We also had a bottle of plum wine. Which was ABSOLUTELY YUMMY! I would have finished that whole bottle by myself if I didn't have 3 other girls to share it with.  My 2 aunts shared a "2 person special" which was I think $45. It came with the lobster, scallops, and chicken; & of course you get rice, chow mein, & vegetables. I shared the other 2 person special with my other aunt which came with steak, chicken, & shrimp; & of course the other sides ($43). ALL the food was mind boggling GOOD!!!! We asked our chef to load that mother up with garlic & UGH I could just die thinking about it. The guy was really fun too, he poured sake in our mouths (my favorite part) & tossed pieces of corn at us. The only thing was I thought it was a bit lame that they charge extra if you wanted fried rice. But other than that, it was a great experience with SUPER yummy food. I'd definitely go back!

First of all we showed up at lunch time on a Saturday and the place was wide open. The host was pleasant and the music was cool . Me and my fiance shared a lunch combo with seared scallops and fillet mignon. Both the scallops and the fillet mignon were cooked perfect.  Next we had the Yum Yum roll and the Volcano roll and they were good. But what i noticed about this place that was different then most sushi restaurants is that they didn't smother everything in teriyaki sauce to cover up the taste. As a matter of fact most of their dishes were seasoned just right especially their habachi soup. The broth was light and you could taste the mushrooms. Next she ordered the oyster shooters and she swears they were heaven. And i ordered two salmon skin hand rolls and the salmon was toasted just right. I will be frequenting this place a lot.

This place was a fun place for dinner. I wouldn't go as far as saying that its atmosphere is like a trendy downtown place by any means but it was nicely decorated and themed inside. The place is relatively small but still has about 6 grills and a sushi bar area. I made a reservation for a party of two on a Friday night at 8:30 but it wasn't necessary. The place was pretty empty. We were the third grill in use and the other two were finishing their meals. Each grill fits 8 people and there was only a total of 6 people at ours, 3 couples.

The service was great! The waitress made sure that my sake and beer never went dry. The food was AMAZING. I will agree with other people that the food here rivals other places in San Diego easily. I really liked that on top of the typical meso soup, salad and rice that comes with an entree at most places, this place also gives you chow mien. I thought that was pretty cool. The cook was very funny and hard to understand, which made things more funny. He got everyone at the table very involved while he was cooking and made the experience memorable.

The reason 4 stars and not 5....

PRICE.... it was not over priced but it was expensive. If I felt like i was getting a better deal I would have given this place a 5th star. Again though, its not over priced, its just a steep price (especially if your drinking, which is basically a must at these places).

Seeing this cool little restaurant in the local strip mall a time or two, it was the first place I thought of when craving Sushi this evening.

I read up on other reviews and was excited about trying the place. My friend and I were greeted immediately and asked if we wanted a private table or to sit at the Hibachi. We choose a private table.

We dove right into the menu and I will say I was a little disappointed with the sushi roll selections. But I found an old stand by favorite Crunchy roll, and my friend ordered a Caterpillar.

Eating was a little disturbing with the waitress hovering at the wall watching us as we ate. The rolls were yummy but seemed to take awhile to get to us with only one sushi chef working. There seemed to be ALOT of wait staff just standing around it was a bit unnerving.

I will say that I have had better sushi, but the atmosphere and the knowledge that there is a local hibachi place means I will be back for a second try at the Hibachi Table.

Anyone complaining about the lack of good places to eat in Santee can just shut the **** up and try Okawa. Don't be fooled by the unassuming store front tucked away in a strip mall. Once inside, you're transported to a dining experience more often found downtown.

We sat at one of the hibachi grills and enjoyed the antics of the quietly quirky chef as he prepared what turned out to be a delicious meal. I ordered the chicken and filet meal, my friend ordered the chicken and lobster. Our meals came with fried rice, noodles, and  veggies, and they threw in a few pieces of shrimp. Everything was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right...including my steak--medium rare--which other restaurants tend to overcook thinking I don't really want as much red as I think I do.

Soup and salad are served as starters. I wasn't a big fan of those, but I wasn't there for soup and salad anyway. We also ordered a Tiger Roll which came out great.

The service was quick and polite. I never lacked a full glass of water and my friend's green tea was promptly topped off throughout the meal.

I've seen that other Yelpers bemoan the prices here. It's true, this place isn't cheap. Neither is the food. It's excellent. You get what you pay for. If you want cheap cheap, go to Vons and get sushi there. If you want delicious food and a great experience, go to Okawa.

If you love Benihana, you'll love Okawa. I went here by accident because my friend and I were picking up her mom in Santee and  decided to find an eatery in the area. Initially, I planned on just getting sushi but noticed how cheap their hibachi dinners were, so i had to try it out. The meal started off with salad which was gingery and pleasant. Next came the Hibachi soup, and it didn't taste like MISO soup with onions in it (like Benihana) . It was not overwhelmingly salty, & was actually very tasty with tempura onions strings & thin slices of mushrooms. The cook joined us and did an entertaining demonstration of the food preparation. He grilled veggies, beef, chicken, shrimp, scallops, fried rice and noodles. He did cool side things like a volcanic onion, or spelled out certain things and was very funny throwing chicken in the air and having the guests catch it with their mouths. LOL

The difference between Benihana and Okawa is that Benihana offers green tea ice cream with each hibachi meal (which OKAWA doesn't) ... while OKAWA adds sauteed noodles  (Benihana does not). So if you want green tea ice cream with your Hibachi meal, go to Benihana. If you want noodles with your meal, go to Okawa. :)

**Okawa Hibachi dinner or lunch is cheaper than Benihana

It surprises me that Okawa charges downtown prices in Santee for their sushi bar and hibachi grill.

Like any hibachi restaurant, they had the cheap thrills -- tossing chopped veggies into guests' mouths (Yeah! clap clap!), onion volcano lit on fire (Yeah! clap clap!), knives and salt shakers tossed in the air (Yeah! clap clap!).  Although the hibachi chef's show was as good as they come, I was disappointed with the food.

Everything is very salty and tough.  Hubby went with the lobster/filet combo for $29.95, I went with the chicken/salmon combo for $19.95, extra $2 for fried rice... each.  Meh.  The soup was just dirty dish water with scallions and, if you're lucky, 2 slices of mushroom.  I did dig their classic ginger dressing for the salad.

My husband and I went to this place after class one day and let me tell you...it was really good!  We had no idea the inside would look like it did.  It's really nice.  A little pricey, but worth it if you're willing to spend that kind of loot.  So if you feel like doin' it big one night and you're in Santee, hit up Okawa!

The bf and I did a short mini-hike last week and thought of food right after. We were thinking somewhere close-by, different and not too pricey.  I was craving Japanese and started yelping and came across this little joint.  It was not that far from our pad which was great. I don't really go down to Santee much but hey worth a try right?

We ordered the Dragon Roll, Okawa Roll, and I forgot the other one but they were all pretty good.  The steamed shumai was nom nom as well. My bf ordered this tastey green tea drink. Pretty good.

Atmosphere was nice and not too crazy busy.  They even have a teppanaki area... we shall try that along with the happy hour specials next time.

I'm sure it will be a fave spot...

The food is fantastic! We have only been here for sushi (twice), but we are planning on doing hibachi with our kids soon. The sushi is very fresh and super tasty. I like eating at the sushi bar and asking the sushi chef to surprise us (hasnt been a miss yet). I also enjoy the sweet sake. :)

Only reason why I am not giving it a 5 is it can get pretty pricey. Our two lunches there for just my husband and I average about 75 bucks. We typically order about 3 sushi dishes, an appetizer and each of us one drink. The food is very good, that its worth it, but only for every once in awhile or we would be poor. :)

I had high hopes for Okawa based on early reviews. The staff were all very friendly, and the food was okay, but for $25 pp, I don't feel like I got my money's worth.  Yes, I understand that teppan-yaki has premium pricing, but the truth is Okawa's competitors offer a more pleasurable environment and better tasting food for the same price.

    Two suggestions for the mgmt:

    - Stop overdiluting that poor excuse for Miso soup that you serve. Starting a meal off with obvious cost-cutting is not smart.

    - Other places I've been to finish the meal off with ice cream, which not only enhances your value proposition, but also masks the excessive garlic and sodium that your diners have consumed. Try this as a test, and don't nickel and dime people by charging extra.

    Great place!

Went on a Thursday, had a reservation but didn't need one.
Just like Benihana without having to drive all the way there or deal with the lack of parking (seriously, do they need to reserve half of their lot for valet???)
Fun environment and good food/  I'll definitely be a repeat customer.

    AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!

I was quite impressed with this place.  My boyfriend and I had eagerly waited for the opening of this place, ever since we saw the sign in the window ( we frequent the pet shop thats next door ). I had never had sushi before, so my boyfriend thought this would be a good place for me to start since it is a steak house as well. Being adventurous i decided to try the "sweety roll" ,i also tried a few other things but i can't remember what they're called.

I thought the service was very good, although my boyfriend said that they took a little longer to make their sushi... but I think it was definitely worth any extra time we had to wait ( we didn't wait long at all, maybe 5 mins total  for our rolls).

The staff was very nice, and the man making our sushi was very knowledgeable and was able to take ingredients and descriptions from my boyfriend and make them into what he wanted (which i thought was pretty cool).

Both me and my boyfriend quite enjoyed this, although i think next time  we will probably go a little earlier since we went just about an hour before they closed this time ( i kind of felt bad because they waited for us to finish ) but they never tried to hurry us or anything, they just patiently waited ( but didn't hover)....

all in all ,i think me and my boyfriend will be coming back to this place much more!!

i very much look forward to my next visit!

I "was" a loyal Domo Sushi regular. That was until a friend brought me here. A little more exspensive, but worth every dime. The service is top-notch. The sushi is fresh and delicous. The hibatchi tables are as yummy & entertaining as Benihana's. The only complaint I have is that the word is starting to get out about Okawa, and the lines are getting longer! I suppose this review isn't helping my complaint, but they deserve a 5 star review.

Yum! They also made Gluten Free California Rolls for my son...huge bonus in my book!!  The hibatchi (sp?) grill is fun and the food is yummy!

Although my expectations were pretty low only because of the East County location, the rolls were really good and fresh. The place itself is tiny but nicely decorated and put together. There wasn't a wait when I went and it doesn't seem like it would get too crowded because I think people are still overlooking it.

Got two delicious appetizers and the spicy tuna and shrimp roll and a couple other rolls. The rolls are big... but I think it was still overpriced, which is why I gave it three stars. They are downtown prices. I'm not sure if it will survive with those kinds of prices, unless there's a really good HH that I don't know about.
