Every time I come to San Diego I find myself looking for something LIKE Ocean Villa Inn which compares the price and location, I couldn't find anything better and I show up without my dog!

I believe they have certain rules and rooms that are pet free but for the most part this is a pets + owners type of inn. Like other reviews its like being in the parking lot of the pet beach with a great jogging track behind it which faces the ocean where sail boats come in and out.

The second floors have the best view. The continental breakfast is also very enjoyable if you're trying to stay on an affordable budget. It helps to have free breakfast!

There has been some issues with plumbing in the shower and also we had some doors that didn't lock properly, but the desk clerk was always quick to offer a discount.

It's very hard to find a great dog hotel but this is definitely a great one and I will be staying here very often. Even though I have a lot of negative to say the one positive is that my dogs had a great time there and it was perfect for them. The dog beach was right there! For that, this place gets 3 stars.

Someone else wrote "5 stars for dogs, 1 star for people" and they were not kidding.

The bedding...yes, the bedding. It's been said before and I'll say it too....it's horrid.
The springs stick out, the metal frame that goes all the way to the floor is a bit rusty and all the bedding is very torn and worn.
The top comforter, which I never keep on the bed anyway, smelled like dog pee.

The floors are not clean at all. They are in dire need of some serious deep down cleaning.

The screens on the doors are not easy to close at all. Be careful not to break it!

The shower...oh the shower....I really was about to jump in the ocean to clean myself. They had a stand in show that the water trickled out of. There was more water pressure filling up the toilet tank than there was washing my rear!

The dog run is full of poop, you would think that if people aren't picking up their own poop that someone would come out with a scooper and pick it up.

The free continental breakfast was a bit of a joke. Weak coffee with just powder creamer and some hard boiled eggs which I think were the same eggs day 4 as day 1 of my stay.

All that being said...I didn't go there expecting a 5 star hotel. I went there expecting to get what I got...maybe it could have been a little cleaner but hey....I stayed there for the dogs, not myself.

I would recommend staying here if you are going with your pets and don't mind that feeling of having been camping for 4 days when you leave.

It's an ok hotel. It's great if you have a dog though! They have a fenced yard and the dog beach is in front of the hotel. It's more like a Motel 6 just close to the beach.

This was the worst hotel we've stayed in in quite some time. Mattresses were shot to h*** and all blankets and towels had several large yellowish / brownish stains on them. We stayed for 2 days and on tje 2nd day, nobody had come to replace our dirty towels or tidy up the beds. There was a huge gap under the front door which made for an exceptionally cold night, and the heater, when turned on, was extremely noisy so we had to turn it off and try not to freeze. The exhaust fan in the shower area was not working, lots of holes in tje ceiling that were not patched, and part of the floor was sticky. "dog friendly" ? Come on - the owners of this place do NOT care about quality control. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this hotel ever again.

more like 2.5 stars. It is a great location with some cool benefits. It is great for dogs(of any size!). i have 2 large dogs and it is hard to find places that allows bigger breeds. The room had a sliding door that went to the dog run. Had to watch for piles of poop, Lazy Pet Owners!! the beds were horrible. 2 queen size beds that sunk in the middle, very uncomfortable. put a few bucks into remodeling and this place would be great. damp pet smell but that was expected. Definitely a great place if your all about the dogs. a few steps to Dog Beach, it was a great weekend!!

The location is great, the staff is nice and the dog run is good but the beds were crappy and they charge you  a non refundable $33 dog deposit and you have to clean your own room!!!!  The rooms are gross and Our room ended up being $165.00 with tax and deposit. (In the winter!) I am going to look for a less expensive place next time for a hotel with updated rooms a refundable deposit and a JACUZZI!!! That's right they don't have a jacuzzi!!

    We loved this hotel!
We have two french bulldogs and it's always difficult finding a hotel that welcomes pets but Ocean Villa has a fenced in back yard for your dogs to run, 2 minutes from Dog Park and the staff is super friendly.
The rooms are clean and spacious.
Great Hotel with reasonable rates and wonderful location!

I wish all dog-friendly hotels were like this one.  Most places say they're dog friendly, but then have so many extra fees and restrictions it really puts a damper on traveling with the pups.  The only restriction I saw with Ocean Villa was a 4 dogs max per room rule...holy crap!  I have a hard time finding places that allow 2 dogs!  Get a room on the 1st floor next to the dog run, walk 1 min to the dog beach, then use the super convenient dog wash at the Villa when you return, then let your pups run around the dog run to dry off.  1 star off for the pretty worn bedding & saggy beds.

I frequent ocean beach everytime I venture into San diego. First time I actually stayed in ocean beach, I came upon the ocean villa inn. Conveniently located right on the beach, the upstairs rooms have a marvelous view of the beach from the balcony. It's so refreshing to breathe in the ocean air first thing in the morning.
Check in was easy and was welcomed by two friendly dogs in the lobby area. I've read the reviews on this dog friendly hotel so I was ready for the dog ambience. They have awesome customer service. The check in dude was cool and later let us swim in their heated pool for a nice midnight dip;)

I know I will be staying here again next time I get my summer beach break:)

If you want a no-hassle, fun time in San Diego and you want to bring your pooch with you, the Ocean Villa In is the place to stay. Located in the hippie-ish beach town of Ocean Beach, The Ocean Villa Inn is a great place to stay. Like many of the reviewers before mentioned, this is not a five-star resort, so leave your pretensions behind before you check-in.

As far as hotels in Ocean Beach go The Ocean Villa Inn has a lot to offer:
    - On the Beach
    - Dog Friendly
    - Reasonable Price
    - Accommodating Staff
    - Fun Area

One thing that I love about the Ocean Villa Inn is the proximity to some great bars, shops and restaurants on Newport Avenue. You won't need to worry about cab fare as you are just a five minute walk away from the fun. The area restaurants cater to every craving and budget which to me is important when I choose a hotel. I want to know how close the fun and food is located!

The Ocean Villa Inn gets two thumbs and four paws way up!

I've been staying here for Thanksgiving with my family for as long as I can remember and we keep coming back.  The place is great.

The upstairs rooms are a little nicer than the downstairs rooms that allow pets and are therefore a little more ragged.  The upstairs rooms all have a sliding door out the back that opens to an ocean-facing balcony.  Downstairs the door opens to a fenced in grassy area for dogs to run around or do their business.  And there are disposal bags provided (use them!).  Every room I've ever stayed in has a dorm-sized fridge and microwave.  Some rooms actually have a kitchenette with a full sized refrigerator, microwave, and sink.  The only problem is the water saver shower head.  Not nearly robust enough for my taste.

Last time I stayed here I booked a room with a king sized bed the day before with no problems and for only $99.

It's walking distance to the pier and downtown O.B., they have waffles for breakfast (that ends at 9am sharp), and there's a heated pool if the ocean is a little too cold for you.  What more could you need?

I only paid $95 for my room on a Sunday, great price for a place right by the beach. The rooms are nothing fancy and there were a few glitches in the electrical, but still enjoyed my stay. Free continental breakfast is included, just your basic juices and danish. Staff was friendly, the water was turned off due to a flood in another room and we were refunded $25 off the room. There is a small outdoor pool and dog beach is right behind the hotel, plus you can walk to the Ocean Beach pier and shops! I will be back, loved it !

We haven't even stayed here, but I'm yelping my experience for their lack of accountability in advertising.

I thought we had found the perfect spot for our trip with our pup, after looking at many options.  I was willing to overlook the comments about the towels, beds, pillows etc. noted by other yelpers.

I would have probably even paid the $169 a night for a motel room were it not for the $99 a night they were advertising.  http://oceanvillainn.c...

However, when we called to request a room for 4 nights, we were informed that the first two nights were standard rate and the second two nights would be discounted to $99 a night.  Yes, I'm actually pissed about this.  I have to wonder if we had only requested one night what the rate would have been.

If I advertised prices for my business on my website, I would be forced to accept the terms of the advertisement.  If the website noted that the deal was subject to standard rates for certain nights, this would have been acceptable.  I simply do not like the used car salesman type behavior (nothing against used car salesmen - go green!)  but seriously!  How lame.

Being pet-friendly should not give this place license to provide crappy service and overcharge for dumpy rooms that desperately need to be updated. Yeah, yeah, it sits right on the beach. That still didn't make it worth it.

We recently took our baby girl Ginger on her first road trip. We were San Diego bound. Since she loves the beach, I booked a room at Ocean Villa Inn for one night. It sits right on Dog Beach and had decent reviews. Even still, I had low expectations after checking out their website.

After checking in, we headed to our room feeling ready to relax for the night and get some good sleep. Our room was supposed to have 2 queen beds. This brings me to the first problem. The beds were doubles. And uncomfortable with wafer-thin pillows and exposed box springs that looked like they had been torn up by my cat. I imagine many hotels have older box springs, but they are smart enough to cover them with a damn bed skirt. Come on, get it together!  I woke up several times in the middle of the night because I was so skeeved out by what I was probably sleeping on. Have you seen those special lights they use on 20/20 to expose the filth that covers most hotel blankets and sheets?

Let's see...what else? The bathroom fan didn't work, the remote control was old, dirty, and held together by tape. And here's the best part. They serve Sunday morning continental breakfast from 7-9 AM. What kind of hours are those? The husband strolled on over at 8:59 only to find all the food had been put away and the doors locked up. Outrageous! He asked the woman at the front desk if he could have some food and she refused! When he asked for a glass of OJ she told him they don't serve OJ for breakfast anyways.

We were none too happy about any of this. The words "villa" and "inn" don't fit with the reality of this place at all. This place is a glorified Motel 6 or Vagabond. It just happens to be on the beach.

I contemplated giving this place 5 stars, but it is a motel after all.  :)

BUT, it's the best goshdarn motel I've EVER stayed in.  It's right on the dog beach and even though we don't have a dog, it was fun to see the dogs run around.  We stayed on the second floor which has a better view of the ocean and just sat there and stared off the private balcony - awesome.  And no, not a single dog kept us up.

The lady behind the counter was amazingly nice.  We didn't go in the pool, but it looked fine - it is outside.  Plenty of parking that's included.  Close to walking to the downtown area with shops, restaurants, and bars. The room has a coffee pot, fridge, and microwave!  Amazingly cool.

I would definitely recommend staying here and we will do so again.  Just a nice, clean, chill place.  Have fun!

The first reviewer of this Hotel must have swallowed a little too much sea water on his first stay in San Diego. Mr. Abby W, you should take the snobby review and realize this is Ocean Beach and not La Jolla Cove. I guess some yelpers just love to be first reviewers to give 1 star... whatever works for you!

In regards to this hotel, I am an Ocean Villa Inn addict. I live in the area and recommend that all my friends and family stay at this hotel when they come to visit. You must approach the OB environment with a grain of salt, as it is definitely a flashback to the hippie days. The inn is located right on dog beach and is the best place to bring man's best friend.

The hotel staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Over the years management has made major improvements to the hotel.  My friend's last stay in room 30 was amazing! The room had been recently renovated and I had a gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel is a great deal: ocean view, pet-friendly, on the beach, a plasma tv and all for $99 a night!!! Summer rates are a little higher, but you can't ask for a better value!

Good for dogs, but awful for humans!! The dog had a new tile floor, but the beds had absolutely no cushioning!! Plus you could hear every movement from the person in the upstairs room, which made the dogs barks and wake us up every time!! There was poor craftsmanship on the repairs that were done to the room as well. One big positive was it's location to the dog beach!

Just got back from a 4 day stay.  We LOVE this place!  OK, so it is not a 5-star luxury resort, but we are crazy dog lovers, and this place is so welcoming to our furbabies.  Rooms are a nice size with fridge and microwave, and had a continental breakfast each morning between 7-9am.   Employees are super friendly, and very accommodating.  We love the dog wash right outside, and loved being just steps away from the dog beach.  This place is perfect for ANY dog lover.  Can't wait to go back  :)

Fun to embrace the laid-back, friendly, Ocean Beachy dog vibe!  Unfortunately due to irresponsible dog owners, more policing of the dog run is necessary. I couldn't walk 2 steps out the back without stepping in poop that did not belong my dog.  Note to travelers:  just go with it, you're on vacation and your dogs will have a blast.  Also lots of nice people,  and bring your own mattress. 5 star for dogs, 1 star for humans. Upgrade necessary. A big Zero for those who can't pick up their own poop!

    Location Location Location!
All I have to say.. Its an awesome place to stay given the location.. Not too far from the pier at Ocean Beach, but not dreadfully close so your all up in the madness going on over there all day. Nice balcony's with a decent view of the beach and sunset, nothing overly spectacular though, but definitely beats any hotel with a window at second story.  The rooms have a mini fridge, coffee maker and a microwave which are really useful if your trying to save money between meals. Though my main complaint about this place and why it has a 3 star vs 4 star is NO MATTER the time of day or night.. The damn shower's shower head has pressure weaker than a old mans flow. I mean nothing is worse then leaving a shower feeling like you want to go home or another place to take another... I would recommend bringing body wash to ease this problem, being the weak flow makes it hard to get off bar soap. As well prices seem to be a little steep, but all hotels this close to a beach are this way.. So can't really complain.. The dog beach right outside the balcony is entertaining to watch while admiring the beach.. A very alive place. Lastly the continental breakfast seems to never be fully in stock.. I couldn't even get to any food because the staff were cleaning something for a annoying amount of time (no one wants to wait for 5 minutes to grab something from a counter that doesn't even have to prepared, while half awake after a long night and the morning of check out.).. But again.. the location takes the ball.. I will definitely return her someday.. and someday soon hopefully.

Hmmm...don't understand that really bad first review on here, we didn't experience any of that. I'm fairly snobby when it comes to hotel rooms as I travel a lot. I've stayed at many beach hotels...from funky to ultra nice. This one was somewhere in between.

After having stayed at the Ocean Beach Hotel on Newport Ave many times, this one is a gem compartively speaking. The OB Hotel has gotten way too expensive the last few years and I won't stay there anymore. Besides, you have to put up with the late night partying on Newport which can make it difficult to sleep. They are now charging $169 during the week and $220 on the wknds! And what they consider an upgrade that they recently did is a joke as far as I'm concerned. Of course I've been staying there for over 20 yrs now and I remember when it was only $50 a night to stay there, so it ticks me off that they charge so much now for a place I consider super funky. And I do like funky...but I digress.

The Ocean Villa Inn on the other hand only charged us $99 a night for a Sun-Tues and that rocks! Great price for a beach hotel. Yes, the decor is a bit outdated, but not as bad as the OB Hotel which charges a hell of a lot more. The room was clean, beds were fairly comfy and the staff friendly. The complimentary continental breakfast was pretty decent. C'mon people..if you can't get up for breakfast between 7-9 am, you're just lazy! Two kinds of cereal, all kinds of bread, kinda lousy pastries, fruit AND OJ when I was there. Yogurt too.

I do have a few minimal complaints though. My girlfriend who booked the room asked for an early check in which of course they can't guarantee. But when we arrived at 11:30 am, they said it wasn't ready and we went to go eat lunch and returned and then they said it wouldn't be ready until normal check in time at 3 pm. That sucked.

It's great that they have a fridge and microwave, but their coffee maker was crappy. It leaked several times, was in a stupid location on this little shelf above the fridge and was hard to reach, but nowhere else to put it. I suggest bringing your own if you can.

We don't have dogs, but we love other dogs and I hang out at Dog Beach a lot as I live down here now, but my friend lives up in LA. We love the fact that on the upper floor, no dogs allowed, they can only stay on the bottom floor as each room lets out onto a grassy area for pooping which they supply plastic bags right out there on the fence for. We thought we would hear dogs barking, but we never really did. Maybe we just had a good couple of nights, who knows?

And I wouldn't say it's right on the beach. It's set back from the beach by a few thousand (?) yards, but you still have a decent view. We also loved that it was only 2 miles from Sea World.

All in all, my friend and I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone that comes down here, whether you have dogs or not. You tell me where you can stay almost right on the beach for $99 a night?!

When we go to visit our relatives in Ocean Beach, we stay here. This place turned to be a dog friendly hotel which is nice but living in Seattle and can't take my dog to SD everytime we go there makes me sad! This place is right next to the beautiful dog beach! My dog would love that, but we don't want to drive down from Seattle (we've done that many times but we're getting old for that...), nor we don't want to fly with my dog. I'd be too worry about her :(

This hotel is by the beach, what do you expect...this place is not the most clean hotel, and the hotel itself is pretty old. But people there are friendly and it's convenient for us, so we stay there. Ocean Beach is such a cool place to be. Just walk around the beach, or go to look around the shops on New Port. I can't wait to go back there and spend some time on the beach with my family.

Motel 6 By The Sea...Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to go back!  It's a five star resort for canines.  A dog run right outside your sliding glass door, which is very helpful for late night walks...a short walk to the leash free dog beach...and a hosing off area on hotel property.  The best place your dog can stay on vacation!!
On the flip side...for us humans...the rooms are clean, but old.  Kinda creepy comforters, and the beds are crap, with wafer thin pillows.  Employees are super nice...continental breakfast...ehhh... Nothing to write home about, but free.
Overall...great hassle free place for you and your pooch.

This place is really good, especially if you have a dog.  I don't think there are too many dog friendly hotels around.  My only complaint is the "king sized bed" is smaller than a queen sized and their "queen sized" is about the size of a full.  A little deceiving but other than that the place is great!

    5 stars for service.
We stayed here on a Sunday night. 3 people and 3 dogs. Yes we are crazy. my bf, brother and myself, 2 yorkies and 1 husky mix...we must have looked a sight making a road trip SF to MX and back. ANYWAY. The service was EXCELLENT, super friendly and helpful. It's right on the beach, Dog Beach in fact, in sleepy OB, we loved it. The rooms are motel rooms in a beach community...not 5 star...but thats not what you expect. It's cool cuz your room opens up to a patio and a dog run area that is all enclosed. The bed my bf and i shared was fairly awful but my brother said his was fine. I didn't expect the Westin heavenly bed so it didn't bother me. That being said today, tuesday, my back is seriously messed up ;0) Overall i thought the room was cool. Mini-fridge, microwave, enough room to unpack if you are staying for a while. AC worked great albeit loud. It caters to people who want to chill on the beach and bring their dog(s). Again the service was Excellent, they have apples and microwave popcorn in the office for snacking---FREE--- and coffee in the AM. I didn't hit the breakfast 7-9am, yeah it's pretty early...until 10 would be nicer but whatever, again i think beach people get up that early to surf or lay on the beach.
I would go back next time i'm in SD with my 'kids'

Oh, and it was funny....in the morning people were letting their dogs out and we had an extra 4 dogs in our room at any given time :0) So make sure to keep your door closed if that freaks you out, i loved it though :0)

Let me start by saying this is by no means a four star hotel or anything close. This is a beach motel right on the beach that allows you to bring dog or dogs for only a 25.00 dollar fee- it does not get much better than that! The staff at the hotel is super friendly and knowledgeable about San Diego. The hotel is walking distant to Newport Ave, but far enough away that you do not hear the noise or get the drunk stragglers. The hotel is clean, the parking is free and it is noticeable that they are trying to make  aesthetic changes to the hotel. I highly recommend this place for a weekend get a way if you want to be on the beach, a clean room, friendly staff and walking distance to bars, restaurants and shopping- also the pool is heated :)

Before I moved out to SD I stayed here numerous times and its a great place to stay. It's right on the beach! I have suggested it to many of my friends who visit san diego often and they have all loved it, Its got a certain OB charm to it and if you if you want to be directly on dog beach, there is no where else to stay. Dogs love staying he even more! They all play around in the grass and they cant get enough of dog beach. The staff is friendly. Its not a fancy resort but it is perfect if you like the laid back beach town vibe and want to bring your dog on vacation. Definitely recommend staying here, especially during summer!

This motel was a great spot for my Ocean Beach vacation, quiet but close enough to Newport Ave. and all the fun going on there. Steps from the beach and clean. The room was a bit poorly lit but I was barely there so that wasn't a huge factor. Bed could've been a bit more comfortable but for the price range and location this place was perfect. Views from the balcony were amazing especially in the morning. I will definitely stay at this motel again if I come back to OB, and next time I hope I can bring a dog.

I... LOVE THIS HOTEL! Okay it's not a 5 star hotel but you're next to the beach you're not here to stay in your hotel room all day you know. My dog, Dusty, loved it too. We had this little dog run he did play with the dogs (he's a very hyper playful dog). The continental breakfast was OK... it's free. We had a lot of fun at the dog beach and Seaworld. Guest service was amazing! Plus, we're allowed to keep our dogs in our room as long as they don't bark. I'm so coming back next year. I"m coming back in September too.

Great for dogs!  It's right on the beach!  Nice & clean, but need to spend a little $ to repair things.  Number one mattress as think ours is from the 60's when the place was built.  Laying here I can feel almost every spring!  Next there must not be anything to help with noise as it sounded as if the people above us put on boots & ran around their hotel room.   This went on & off almost all night. Luckily walking around town & running on the dog beach wore our dog & us out so much we still slept pretty good!   Off each room is a little patio that is open to the fenced grass dog run this is great to have when your traveling with your dog!  So even with noise and bad mattress YES we would go back!  And next time ask for a room away from the ice maker!  But if you have dogs and want to enjoy a trip with them then this is the place!  As most places in town even have a patio so you can take your doggie out when you dine!

Just came back from another great weekend.  I love it here!  Low-key, friendly staff, and friendly guests.  I warn you, you need to be a dog lover to enjoy it here.  And now the pool is heated!  Try it, you'll like it!

My husband and I were looking somewhere to stay that allowed dogs in the San Diego area for our honeymoon. After I read the reviews I brought my own pillows and couple of blankets just in case. When we checked in we told the guy at the front desk that we were on our honeymoon and he upgraded our room to the family sized room, which we thought was really nice. The room we were in was room number 20 and it was very spacious. The bed was comfortable and our pillows were not flat. There was also a couple of extra pillows and blankets in the closet.  There was a patio door that opened up to a large semi private patio and a huge dog run. It was so much fun to see all the dogs running around playing with each other. The dog beach is only a short walk away as well.  There are also plenty of restaurants within walking distance that are pet friendly. If you love your dog you will take them here to stay with you. They have a little breakfast bar set up that includes cereal, toast, muffins and waffles with a little juice machine and coffee. We want to come back every year with our dogs!!

This place has a few things going for it...location, pet accomodations, and a friendly staff.  However, the room itself was yucky.  The room stunk, the shower was gross, and there were holes in the walls.  Considering that, I thought it was overpriced.

I love this hotel! And so does my dog! Very pet friendly rooms. Very pet friendly staff. And a very pet friendly beach just steps away from your door. Good luck finding beach parking if you don't stay here. Surprisingly clean rooms and a nice breakfast. Plus fruit & other snacks are available all day long in the lobby. Restaurants & liquor stores are located just up the street. Or stock up with your own viands in your room's fridge. I've visited here the past two years to celebrate my birthday and will make this an annual retreat. While I truly love this place, I'd be remiss in not pointing out the minor negatives. If you need wireless access, you'll have to take your laptop out by the pool as you most likely won't get it from your room. Plus, the rooms could use a few more electrical outlets. Finally, the complimentary coffee isn't exactly Starbucks. Aside from these minor points, we love Ocean Villa!
