There's not a lot of Portuguese restaurants in Winnipeg but O Tacho does a great job representing the Portuguese community!
It's a small family restaurant and seats around 30 people or so. It's a great atmosphere as the staff greets you warmly and serves you a basket of bread with a plate of black olives and cheese.
The salada de polvo or octopus salad ($8.50) includes grilled strips of octopus, onion served with a drizzle of olive oil. I found the octopus to be a tad chewy but it tasted delicious.
The camarao a Portuguesa or Portuguese Style Shrimp ($19) is a very generous bowl of shrimp...if you love shrimp, this is a great dish to try in a lovely sauce. Can be easily shared as an appy between 2-3 people or a very good entree on its own. Make sure you have lots of bread to sop up the sauce!
The bacalhau a bras or cod fish bras style ($18) is a really filling classic Portuguese dish that's serves a very generous portion of potatoes, sauteed desalted cod, onions, and scrambled eggs. Plan to pack this home unless you have a huge appetite!
Another must try is the Alcatra (single serving goes for $16.50 and two servings for $29.50). This is the ultimate in comfort foods - perfect for a cold winter night. It's a clay pot filled with fall off the bone, super tender and moist braised beef in a very yummy and intensely flavoured red wine sauce. Once again, serving sizes are generous.
The frango no churrasco or BBQ Chicken ($14) is served with roasted potatoes. The chicken was delicious but was a tad salty but very moist and satisfying.
Overall, give this place a try if you haven't tasted real Portuguese food before. It can take some time before your meal comes out But it's probably because the food is made from scratch and cooked to order so just enjoy the slight wait with some good appy's, drinks and good conversation.
