I had never been to O'carroll's until this past weekend, and I have to say that many of my pre-conceived notions about this restaurant were wrong. For one thing, I was sure it was a starched-white tablecloth and uptightly formal place which would be filled with businessmen and Denis Ryan lookalikes, darkly discussing major business deals in the dimly-lit dining room.
Fortunately, it was much more casual than that.
To be fair, it felt like a place that had seen better days - perhaps a little past its prime, on the downside of its true heyday. The faded and slightly soiled carpet, and a stack of boxes to one side of the dining room spoke of a level of owner fatigue about the place.
The food was good, but just good. Nothing I couldn't make at home, really - and I do expect a bit of a wow factor when I dine out. I had the seafood linguine - pasta in a lobster cream sauce (thin), surrounded with generous portions of mussels (which were dry), scallops (unremarkable), haddock (a little past fresh), and salmon (which was fine).
My friend had the lobster bisque, the restaurant's specialty, which I tried, but found overly nutmeggy. She really enjoyed it, though. Her salmon - cedar planked with a whiskey maple chili glaze - was probably the best meal at the table. Again she loved it, but I found the salmon overly maple-y. Too sweet for my taste.
Nice atmosphere, though. It was nice to be in a restaurant where sounds were muted enough to hear the conversation at your own table. And our waitress was lovely - very attentive and pleasant.
