Review from Joyce C.
Long Island City, NY
Went back again for another Monday late lunch. The cabbage roll ($2.50/ piece)was good, unexpectedly light but filling. I also tried a pork meatball, with I think mushroom on the inside, with a creamy dill sauce on it (pretty interesting), latke, and string beans (had some kind of meat/bread? crumble on it, not so into that flavor). The hot buffet ended up being $4.
It seemed like they sold out of a lot of the pastries this Monday, or maybe last Monday was slow?
Oh, and the cream of mushroom soup is there on Wednesdays.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Unfortunately, Northside Bakery didn't have any tiramisu the night I stopped by, but I did pick up a small slice of their carrot cake. And guess what? It cost less than $2! INSANE. Any other place nearby probably would've charged $5 for what I got, and that would still be fairly reasonable in my opinion.
Next time I would like to try their bread, and their tiramisu! -

Gorgeous-looking donuts and dishes and dishes of cabbage rolls and other savories drew us in. The 80-cent jelly donut with raspberry-rose-plum jam will bring us back over the bridge again and again.

Nof-side is one of those places that can be a big hit or a near miss...
Being said, I've sampled a bit off everything they have to offer and am satisfied with the spot. The biggest satisfaction being the bills left in my wallet after I left.
Nof-Side is a little old (what seems to predominantly Polish) spot nearing McCarren a bit West of Bedford Ave. There always seem to be a couple of older gentlemen seated outside with the paper and a cup-o-joe, a la Sopranos. Makes you want to be extra friendly and respectful when you pop in.
Regardless, the bread is extremely cheap... both in price as well as finish. Being a carb snob, I likes me a nice dense crusty bread, and found the rye, whole wheat, and seven grain to be extremely airy and light (sorta like supermarket pre-packaged breads), to the point where my sharpest knife still flattened them... the breads were filled in throughout though (no pockets of air like in artisan breads). I would suggest having it sliced there if you're picking it up. Silver lining = Pop them in the oven with some oil and spice to make bread crumbs...
The pastries left me wanting to go out for desert, and with Smorgasburg's Dough around on the weekends as well as Peter Pan up on Manhattan their doughnut's can't even begin to play ball in those leagues.
Overall, after multiple experiences with their "baked goods" I feel that they really should be a 2 1/2 kinda spot, but the cheapo factor brings them around to an even penny pincher's A-OK. I'll give em a couple-o-more shots before throwing in the towel with this spot, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the competitive market here drives their quality up a bit... -

I popped in this place on a whim. I got the chicken soup which was good and a chocolate layer cake which was good. I was anticipating the bill to be around $7-10 but to my surprise $4!!! Everything was GOOD not great. Simply good. Nothing overly amazing. This place is good I will def come back.

This is really the cheapest place to get all of your breads on the north side!! The breads/rolls/snacks are all so delicious. The staff is welcoming which is always a plus. cash only.

Their doughnuts are better than those from Doughnut Plant.
I said it.
Well... maybe equally good... at the VERY least.
They are so ridiculously cheap though ($0.75 each! And they're huge!) that your Doughnutty-Godliness-to-Cost mental math will put them about 4X higher than DP.
And there is never a line.
This place is going to blow up when the word gets out. I don't know why it hasn't yet. Get in early. -

Almond croissant - $1.95
the almond croissant was very fresh, and tasty. it has tons of almond fillings so can be a pretty substantial meal, definitely big enough to share among two people.
Various rolls - mostly 45 cents
Absorutely fantastic, once it is toasted, even better.
the place offers high quality bread at such great prices -

To all European and Americans who love great bread !
For 30 years I was looking for good bread in NY. Zabar's, Schaller and Weber, Amy's Bakery at the Chelsea market those places had good bread. They are pricey and the bread varies in quality. NORHTSIDE BAKERY I tried by accident passing by and since I feel like back in Europe. I tried 8 different loafs of bread from black to white. They were all fantastic in taste and did not dry up on the first day. The bread is very reasonable in price and the people who sell it very helpful to select the right one.
It is very worth it if you don't live around the corner to go the extra mile. If you take the subway like I do use the L train to Bedford Avenue you are then one tiny block away from Bread Heaven. -

Sunnyside, NY
Great desserts but subpar, pretty rude service. The girls working there were not inviting at all (I won't even attest it to the "grouchy" stereotype New York gets. I've had good - meaning ambivalent - service before elsewhere), which is a shame because what I got was incredibly delicious. Would have easily given 5 stars.

I was walking aimlessly with my fellow yelper, Angie C. around the Bedford Ave area and found this amazing bakery with incredibly delicious chocolate wafers. It's not your typical wafers that have 2 layers but this one has 4! It's not crispy but chewy, which adds an interesting texture and flavor to it. It's not too sweet either which makes me less guilty for eating 2 or 3 blocks of it. I also bought their valentine day special cupcake and it's the size of what you would find at Crumbs except much cheaper. It appears to be a very popular place among the locals and would definitely come back and try their bread.

So this looks to be like "the" local Polish hangout. Came here on a Saturday afternoon and there was a steady consistent line of customers buying their goods. Their display case was kind of empty but that must be a very good sign as to their quality. Service is quick and to the point and I was surprised they accept credit cards. In addition to their sweets, they have a pretty large selection of breads as well. I only ordered their chocolate wafers and for half a pound it was $3.00. Tasty yes, but I always expect wafers to be crispy but these sadly were not. Still good though and being the bakery fan that I am, I would definitely head back to this one to try more items if I were to ever leave Astoria/Manhattan.

They have good bread and delicious donuts, but honestly the service sucks! I used to go there every day before work, but had to stop because I could not stand the girls working there. Especially one of them: kind of pretty, toll, with dark hair is really MEAN. I kinda see that all polish girls have that hmm... flavour (???). Greeinpont abounds in good bakeries, so why Northside...?

A cute little Polish bakery in the heart of Williamsburg. Try the chocolate croissant, especially in the morning when it's crazy stupid fresh. I guarantee that it will be the best, flakiest, crunchiest croissant you've ever had.

Love love love their pierogi's- potato and cheese is the way to go. Mushroom and sauerkraut are ok. Have also tried the tiramisu and cappacino dessert cake - very very good!
They get 4 instead of 5 is because they always seem to "run out" or only have certain things on certain days. Also have tried pre-ordering their pierogi's in bulk (they are that good!) but they are very unorganized and could be better with their service.
Have yet to try the fresh baked breads but they look great. Def worth it to stop by and pick some goodies up to go. -

The Seven Grain bread was fresh and amazingly tasty. And only $3. The pastries not overly sweet, but large and flaky - delicious.

Such great bread and very good prices. I've also had the pirogies and a couple of the various cream cakes. Remarkably, though it's in the epicenter of hipster Williamsburg right around the corner from the Bedford L stop, its patrons seem more Polish than trust fund kids. It's almost a daily stop for me.
