LOVE!  Every time we find ourselves in Vancouver, Northern Delicacy is at the top of our eating list.  We discovered this restaurant that's tucked into a corner of Richmond's Aberdeen Center close to 10 years ago and we've been faithfully returning since then.

What sets them apart is their handmade noodles which they use in many of their dishes but a couple of their standouts are the black sesame Dan Dan Mein and hong yao chau sao (small dumplings in chili oil.) The hubby and I were up there for a wedding a couple of weeks ago and this was our last meal before leaving. We ordered 6 dishes, stuffed ourselves and the bill came out to $33 CAD before tip.  Happy tummies and a happy wallet =).

I like their preserved vegetables and pork but their dim sum is just OK. Their honey beef was lacking flavor and their fried rice was just ok. Their decor is nice and service ok, they forgot our dish the second time we went there and the first time it took a while as well. Prefer to pay extra at Fortune Garden for better tasting food.

Ordered a few dim sum dishes and everything tasted good.

The restaurant is in the Aberdeen Centre and appears to stay quite busy, but still had room for us.

It was my first time have chinese donut rolled in sugar then wrapped in rice.  I loved the chewy, crunchy, sweet, and salty combination.  Yum!

An awesome place to eat fresh noodles and dumplings. You can see the chefs make these noodles and the dumplings (at particular times).  A lot of people come to this place to eat xiao long bao, but guys, save your money. I do not recommend ordering xiao long baos. They only give you 4 tiny pieces and they are not the best I've tasted.

When you are here, I would recommend their pan fried pot stickers (those are fresh for sure). Also try their "Salt Cured Pork and Bok Choy with Rice in Pot ". I always order those two ontop of "Fried Handmade Noodles with Shredded Pork and Chives". Those 3 items are pretty much my usual :)

In regards to service: you will get service, but don't expect them to be prompt. These servers are decent but not phenomenal; lets just say 10% tip is what they usually deserve, but I tip extra 2-5% depending on the level of satisfaction from the food and my mood.

    OUTSTANDING!!!

Northern Delicacy is located in the upper most level of the incredible Aberdeen Centre (see: http://www.yelp.ca/biz...).  Coming to this particular shopping center is like leaving North America and being in Asia.  I really enjoyed the "exoticness" of this centre.

Dim Sum is excellent at Northern Delicacy.  I would absolutely come back here again.

    Prices are reasonable.
    Facility is impeccably clean.
    Service is fast and professional.

    5 STAR all the way!

Came here with the wife and kids for a late Sunday lunch.  Service is pretty good in terms of accommodating strollers, young kids and tea service.  We had the usual items on our table :

    * Xiao Long Bao, is not awesome but not bad.  It's not as juicy as I hoped and the dumpling wrap dry and hard.

    * Beef tendon with chilli oil, for those who wants some kick.

    * Shanghai Noodles, just taste like soy sauce.

    * Spicy and Sour Soup, is not hot or spicy.  The soup is thicker than what we're used to.  But, everyone's got their own version of "Hot and Sour Soup."

    * Green Onion Pancake, is only ok.  My three year old loves green onion pancake but this time, she only had one slice.

    * Pan Fried Buns, is quite disappointing.  Dry, juiceless, and worse of all, the bottom is burnt black.

Delicious dim sum, it would be a regular of mine if I lived in Richmond. If you're looking for the best though, go to Fisherman's Terrace.

Food is fresh and some unique dishes. The atmosphere is lively and colourful. Awesome place to go if you wanna hang out in the mall with family after. Hit up Daiso for 2 dollar goods and the food court if you're gluttonous :P

I ordered too many things to remember...but do recall it was great.

My mega hit was spicy tendon.  It actually came to our table by mistake, but we're too hungry to even notice.  Wow.  All I know about  tendon is from pho, but this dish was totally different...a lot softer and richer.  Put it on rice...heavenly.

Steamed pork dumplings...make sure you put the whole thing in your mouth not to miss awesome juice inside.  Not lady-like?  Who cares.

Fatty pork over rice in hot pot was OK, a bit too salty for me.  I think there were some pickles in there?

It was difficult to get server's attention.  I had to stare at every one of them for 5 minutes to have one come to our table.  They also took a few orders wrong.  But one of them turned out to be a great surprise (the tendon dish), so I'm not annoyed.

Menu comes with lots of pictures and written in Chinese, English and Japanese.

I think I might have found a new favourite!!!

Food: Northern Delicacy serves Shanghainese food similar to Shanghai River- so lots of noodles, buns, dumplings...all that good stuff!  When I went with my mom, we ordered "Dan-Dan" Noodles in Black Sesame Soup, Xiao Long Bao (Steamed Pork Dumplings), and Deep Fried Shredded Daikon Pastries!  The noodles were amazing- chewy  noodles in a rich, slightly spicy broth infused strongly with taste of black sesame.  i would definitely suggest NOT finishing one whole bowl of this by yourself.  The first bite of these noodles was heaven...but after like 10 bites...I felt a little sick (sick in the best possible way?) The dumplings were great- thin wrappers filled generously with well seasoned and fresh pork.  The pastries consisted of multilayer of flaky and buttery pastry filled with shredded daikon (a Japanese radish) and some chopped ham.  Everything was super delicious!

Ambiance:  Northern Delicacy is part of the Tropika Group and is conveniently located above Tropika in Aberdeen.  The decor is clean and modern and quite spacious.  The kitchens are also see through so you can see how your food is made!

Service:  Service was very good; in fact, they were so good at refilling cups and taking dirty plates away that they almost took away plates that still had food on it and we practically had to chase the waiters to retrieve them.  But, it was more amusing than annoying.

Value: Great value- bill came to about $20 all together for such good and hearty food.

I can't wait to go back again!!!

In a cold day, just want hot and fresh food.  That's why we went to Northern Delicacy for lunch. It located at Aberdeen center 2/F.

It used to be good food and service, however, we were quite disappointed today.

We ordered traditional Shanghainese foods such as steamed pork dumplings, beef briskets noodle, deep fried to-fu custard and stir-fried radish cake in shanghai style.

All it came fast and tasty (coz salty even too much MSG), we kept drinking water when we eating.

If you like Shanghainese style food, this may be a 5 star for you.  I'm partial to Cantonese style so this may be influencing my review.

Convenient parking and right on the Canada Line since it's on the 2nd floor of Aberdeen Centre.  Clean, great food and GREAT service!  (Sometimes hard to find that combo with inexpensive food!)

My family shared the steamed pork dumplings with the perfect amount of soup that comes out when you cut into it, the shredded daikon pastries (these were AMAZING!), the green onion/scallion cakes, spring rolls and a noodle dish.  I loved their dim sum menu with no complaints there.  The noodles were average but still good.

Solid 4* for me.  Great quality Shanghai cuisine and dim sum.  Very reasonably priced - I was stuffed and it came out to a bit over $10 a person.

Perfect place for a hangover lunch!!!  We shared the spicy beef noodle soup, steamed pork dumplings and pan fried pork buns - which was more than enough for 2 people :)  The soup was so good, I loved the broth, the meat and tendon were also so juicy and delicious.  This was definitely done right!!!  The dumplings and pork buns were really delicious as well.

The bill was pretty reasonable considering how full we were!  Service was just ok though - they never attempted to refill my water even after I asked.  I do like how nice the restaurant looks and how there's no wait (as opposed to the gigantic lineup at Fisherman's Terrace!)  I'd come back for some more noodles any day!

Parking at this mall drives me crazy so I don't visit this place often. But when I do, I'm glad I did because this place has some dishes that other Shanghainese restaurants don't have.

Because this is within the mall, it can at times get quite busy. Call ahead for reservations.

This place decorated nicely, a little bit of modernism mixed with the traditional Chinese, with wooden chairs, and nifty halogen lamps. It's not too big, and consists of mostly 4-5 person tables.

Lots of choices on the menu-many cold appies, rice and noodle dishes, dim sum, meat entrees, and veggies. There's always something for everyone here.

A must order at every Shanghainese restaurant: XLBs. This doesn't doesn't make the best ones, the pork is a little too fatty inside, but the dumpling skin is just the right thickness.

So far I've tried the Thousand year old egg with tofu cold dish-fresh cubes of tofu, with many pieces of the thousand year old egg. (I love that stuff!) Also got a 'vegetarian duck roll', which is chinese mushrooms wrapped in fresh beancurd sheets. This is very fresh as well, and just enough flavour to bring out the mushroom's natural aroma. Fresh handmade noodles in a peanut broth soup was also delicious. The texture of the noodles was perfect, and the soup base was not too spicy, but a little on the salty side. Also got a shrimp fried rice once-actually very good! Lots of fresh shrimp, and it was served piping hot, just the way it should be. Pan fried dumplings are filled with pork and chives, and go perfectly with the vinegar.

Service is quite good here, tea is refilled constantly, and servers come to check up on you. Reasonable prices, with good portions. Now if only parking wasn't so bad here.

Located inside the Aberdeen Centre Mall, this Shanghai restaurant is one of the better ones in town. Being a huge fan of steamed pork dumplings, Northern Delicacy makes fresh, delicious, juicy ones that I order each time.

Another dish is the tender chicken noodle soup, it is SO yummy and chicken is made just right. Other appetizer cold dishes are just as good. We usually order a whole bunch to have an assortment on our table.

The decor has a nice modern-authentic twist with the rock hard benches and stools. The show-case window displays how one of the chefs prepare the dumplings and are made fresh. Service is prompt and good, they ALWAYS fill your tea cup and are at your service when needed. Recommended!

I'm always a sucker for Chinese food in Canada. Being a Seattlite and all, we know where to head to for some real Chinese food...

Why the 3 stars? Well, it's probably more due to personal preference. I've been here about three times, and every time has been... alright. Nothing really wow'd me, but I'm a fan of northern chinese food so that's why I come back here.

First off, in traditional northern chinese form, I ordered the stir fried rice cakes. Good flavor, but waaayyyy too much oil. I know it's kinda picky to be pointing at this, but trust me, this thing comes drenched. The "little dragon" dumplings (another traditional dish) were alright, not as good as other places I've had, but still worth trying out if you're here. I also came here once for dinner, but don't really remember the entrees we ordered very well. They were all just OK... One that did stand out, b/c of its uniqueness, was a dish that was kinda served with a soup and these rice crispy things. Again, it was interesting to munch on, but didn't change my life.

If you're in Aberdeen Center and craving northern chinese food, give this place a try. Worth a try, but there's probably better out there.

In short, 3.5 stars.  Good food but a little pricy giving the nearby competitions.

Food: 4 stars.  We tried (1) Handmade Noodles with Five Spiced Beef in Soup - superb; (2) Shredded Celery and Dried Tofu - very tasty and refreshing; (3) Shredded Jelly Fish with Salt Cured Ham - meat is such a delicacy and very well prepared; (4) "Dan-Dan" Noodles in Black Sesame Soup - very thick sauce and nice nutty flavor, but may be a bit too rich if I had to finish it by myself; (5) Cream & Egg York Custard Puffs (4pcs) - not bad.

Price: $40 for 3 girls, a little on the high side for lunch.

Decor: It's nice and the seats are comfortable.  However, some tables (including the one I was at) has a big pole which makes it inconvenient to get in and out (I'm not that big..)

    Service: decent

This restaurant serves lots of yummy dim sum and Chinese dishes that originated from Shanghai . Lots of tasty dishes, a bit on the pricey side. It's worth a visit if you're at Aberdeen Centre and you want to try out a new Chinese restaurant.

We ordered stew pork, salty egg shrimp, fried rice, XLB and some kind of tofu.  The food was just ok.  Salty egg shrimp was tasty but it's NOT really an unique dish.  XLB is ok but I've had it better.  Maybe we didn't order the right stuff this time... oh well

Excellent yum cha/dim sum. My sister inlaw chose this place as she states that the cuisine is focused on the northern cuisine of china. Xiao lung bao and steam buns were awesome! The cold meat appetizer was tasty! They had this rice dish that had white rice and then 2 kinds of sauces on top...1 a shrimp and veggie sauce and 2nd a tomato chili base with egg. Our family never had something like this before. The tomato sauce reminded me of the sauce on chili shrimp or oar jien (taiwanese oyster omelette). Or maybe even a japanese ketchup omelette. Just thinking of it makes me want some...so maybe the next time i go back i need to hit this place up! The wait staff is attentive and they constantly refill your tea!
