Whitehorse is the traditional northern end of the Whitepass and Yukon Railroad that runs up from Skagway Alaska via Carcross (Yukon).  During my short time in Whitehorse, I noticed a sizable tourist contingent who were on excursions from their Alaska/BC cruise ships.  This was also evidenced by Holland America buses all over the place and folks like my parents searching for coffee at 6 AM (when Tim's opens).

And as expected, there are a lot of schlock souvenir choices throughout the downtown.  And if you're looking for gold (afterall this is the Klondike), it's expensive considering the world price and the current US/Canadian exchange rate.  Note: Murdoch's probably has the most comprehensive selection of gold pieces in Whitehorse.

The North End Gallery does not sell schlock.  They offer a large and handsome selection of artwork, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, and crafts created by artists living throughout northern Canada, but primarily the Yukon.  I found some nice quality gifts there and was aided well by their very knowledgable and friendly staff.   I was very happy with my experience here.
