I was so sad to see Nokomis close. They were committed to Canadian designed and produced clothing, and I've found many treasures at their shop over the years.
They used to host appreciation parties every few months with discounts, snacks, and wine. Most items are pricier - the cost of ethically produced clothing. The sales had blowout prices, though, which I figure averages out my purchases.
Smart clothing for work, and fun party dresses. House line of clothing and great leather belts. Beautiful jewelry showcased. Oh and the grandma wall of pictures - Noko I miss you! -

A big, airy space with old, creaky floors sets up Nokomis as you walk in and feast your fashionista eyes on racks and racks of beautiful Canadian-made and -designed goods!
Very pretty frocks and trendy jeans are two of the staples here. Lots of homey kind of goods, too - at Christmas, stockings, and other times of the year, cards and journals.
It's usually not too hectic in here, and there are a few fittings rooms, which makes for an easy shopping experience. Friendly staff who will tell you all about the collection of grandmother photos on the wall, too. -

I've been a customer since the first year Nokomis was open (in their then tiny little spot near 109 St.). So it's been interesting and now sad to see how my favourite clothing store in Edmonton has changed and is now about to close its doors :(
The premise has always been: support Canadian designers. Initially, there was a wide range of selection, both in terms of style and price range. Over the years, the style has moved to decidedly more hip(ster) offerings and the price range has moved up with that. While I have always found gems, high quality pieces and unique one-of-a-kinds, I would have even more pieces in my wardrobe, had the purchasing philosophy stayed more broad (like the Gravity Pope shoe store, for instance).
Overall, I will be sad to see this place go and hope that another shop, more along the lines of the original Nokomis, will open in its stead. -

Nokomis is unique because it carries exclusively Canadian brands. When you walk into the store, you feel as if you've stepped into another world. The store has a distinctive feel to it, a quiet and undisturbed nook in the city where you can just admire beautiful things.
The clothes have a certain appeal to them, a timeless and feminine quality that should belong in every woman's closet. They carry lines such as Dace, Allison Wonderland, and Smoking Lily, in addition to their house line. There are also beautiful bags and jewelry to complete your look.
I find myself admiring the store as much as the clothes. The walls are painted a soft, feminine pink, and display embroidery pieces here and there. The changing rooms are luxurious and spacious, and have a private mirror in each, so you don't have to step out and model in front of everyone. Their storage room looks like a panic room with a curtain though, with its heavy steel and bolts door. An interesting touch, I found.
Nokomis means "grandmother" in the Ojibwa language. One of the walls in the store is truly a masterpiece; they call it the "grandmother wall". There must be over a hundred photographs hanging on this wall, each of them a snapshot of customers' grandmothers. So not only is this shop beautiful and feminine, but it has a personal touch too.
They host events such as launch parties for their seasonal collections, complete with cupcakes and music. How cool is that? The only glitch I have with this shop is that the prices are a bit up there. I love going here, I just can't afford anything. Maybe someday, but for now, I'll just keep dreaming. -

I've never seen this store before, it's hiding! They have a sign outside but you need to walk though a door before you see the Nokomis store. This store is Canadian! Actually the designer, Nokomis, is right across the street. Their clothes have a 60's style but with a modern twist to them. They have some really great stuff. I really liked a lot of their items. They had this really nice wallet; it was made form really nice and soft leather and it looked like a small purse but I was surprised to see it was a wallet. It was a bit expensive, over $100. They also have really nice larger leather bags. They have some really great boots and shoes, but they don't have many different styles or sizes. I really liked some of their tops and they had some really cute dresses. They didn't have too many accessories, I actually can't remember seeing any.
Their staff is really friendly, the girl who was working there told me about their sale and to me a little about their store. If you want to stay true to Canadian items and you like that old meets new look then I highly suggest you come to Nokomis on Whyte Ave. -

I feel like I need to support this store because it is Canadian, but to be honest, I didn't feel like there was anything special about this store.
The last time I went in there, I bought a little wallet, but I am not a huge fan of the clothes. I am not a tiny girl and none of these clothes would have flattered me. I think they would have looked really nice on the right size 4, but not so much for me.
I love that all the clothes are Canadian made, and if this is an important thing to you then I say check it out. I won't shop there because of the size issue and the style is not quite mine, but I suggest any Canadian woman check out the store, just for fun. -

I love the just the idea of this store, and love the reality of it even more. Nokomis carries all Canadian designers and is full of beautiful things. The clothes are slightly vintage looking with a time transcending urban flare to them. There is a house line as well as a few designers from Edmonton. There are a lot of dresses and tops here but not so many pants. They also carry some very lovely leather bags and the odd pair of shoes. The clothes are a bit more pricey, but you will definitely not find them anywhere else and the quality is the same as if your granny stitched it herself. This place is a refreshing change from the familiar brands found in chain stores and malls. Check it out for a truly unique and timeless addition to your closet!

Several of my female friends consider Nokomis to be their favorite women's clothing store in town. I wouldn't go as far as calling it MY favorite store but I believe it to be a great place to shop for unique items. I should mention right away that sales girls at Nokomis are extremely friendly and helpful; and this helps in creating positive shopping experience. Nokomis carries its own line of clothes as well s brands such as Adrienne Butikofer, Dagg and Stacey, and Sunja Link. Nokomis favors unconventional and funky clothing created by free spirited designers. All items possess a "va va voom" quality, so you can be sure that after shop at Nokomis and stroll down Edmonton streets wearing your newly purchased item, you make a definite fashion statement, and your sense of style and uniqueness will be noticed by by passers.
Amazing accessories are also sold at Nokomis. One of my favorite lines is Toddlebunny. It is created by a Vancouver designer who uses 14k gold fill and sterling silver to make modern and edgy pieces of jewelry. I love the simplicity of earrings and necklaces. -

The spirit of Nokomis had me sold from the time I walked through the door. The shop was inspired by the owner's grandmother and at the door there's a photo gallery tribute to grandmothers. If you bring in a photo of your nanny to post on the wall you get a discount on your next purchase, while paying homage to the wisdom and love of grandmothers. The clothes and merchandise are 100% Canadian, which is so refreshing in our U.S.-dominated consumer market. There are quite a few local designers from Edmonton and Vancouver. The dresses made in-house by the Nokomis team are darling, earthy and comfortable. It's urban street wear with a hint of nostalgia from grandma's era, sewn into each article of clothing. There are some great screen print tees, jewelry, purses and baby attire. You're paying a bit more for local designers, but the quality is excellent and the pieces are truly original.
