We explored another Shanghai cuisine restaurant in Richmond, the English name was a bit funny.

Friday afternoon and it wasn't crazy busy here. The interior was pretty new and clean.

Spicy chicken in chili sauce with peanut - it was ok but not spicy enough.
Shanghai jelly pork - it was good and not too fatty.
Stuffed lotus in sweet sauce - tasty and sweet.
Shanghai style dumping in soup - delicious
Steamed pork dumping XLB -  it was so juicy and flavourful.
Sliced pork with garlic chili sauce - it presented nicely and tasty.
Pork with fried hand-made noodles - it's so disappointed coz it wasn't hand-made and oily.
    Baked radish pastry - ok.

Their late night menu is pretty awesome.

Craving those XLBs at night, I come here and get my fix.

Their mini wontons in soup is great; the soup is flavourful and no MSG, and the little wontons are bite sized and they didn't skimp on the quantity.

Eggplant with this garlic soy chili sauce is my favourite dish here. It's on their late night menu. Chunks of cold eggplant, with lots of minced garlic, and with this perfect balance of soy and spice, it's absolutely wonderful. If you like eggplant, you have to try this dish.

I also order a side of their plain noodles in soup, and dip all the eggplant sauce goodness together with the noodles. So good.

Dan dan noodles is another one of my frequently ordered dishes. Their peanut sauce and soup goes so well together, and it's something about their noodles that I really like-it's the perfect chewiness.

Service here can be good or bad, depending who you order from. Be prepared for some attitude, but that's just the way they are.

Decor here is nice, and it's relatively clean. There's also a private room for 10 people. Prices are good, pretty much the same as all the other Shanghai restaurants in Richmond.

Ok, 1st of all, props for being open past 10pm -- only XLB place we could find that was.  We had already eatten dinner at Shanghai River, but left feeling like we needed more food and didn't want to pay the crazy prices that River has.
We walked into this place, and it was empty..  we were like, uh oh..  we sat down and didn't want to order too much food (as we had just eaten) but also, we were scared that the place being deserted might be a sign.

I must say, all we had were the XLB's (Xiao Long Bao) and a peashoot dish, but both were excellent.  Their XLB's had a stronger ginger flavor than some other places, but I like ginger so I enjoyed it quite a bit.

    I would definetily go back.

It's really a shame that the idea of Chinese food usually conjures up images of chow mein and mu shu pork for the standard Westerner. After all, China is a large country that encompasses and incorporates many cultures from Mongolia to India to the near Middle East. We perpetuate the myth that Chinese food must be cheap and a little dirty to be genuine.

The night after my cousin got married, our family went to No. 1 Shanghai Cuisine (brilliantly creative name) for a sort of after-wedding reception party. We all had a great time. The staff was very friendly and the food was amazing. Of course, we had the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and a number of other things I've only seldom tried before - if ever. It was a nice change from the standard Cantonese/Szechuan fare the West is normally accustomed to, cooked with enough flavor that I'm actually getting hungry as I write this. Not "cheap" but definitely worth it.

By far the best meal from our trip to BC. And yes, I'm Chinese.

With so many Shanghai restaurants in Richmond, this one is my favorite. I always go back to this one whenever I want some Shanghai delicacies. This place is right on the corner of No.3 Rd and Browngate Rd, there's a parking lot right in front as well, although it's usually full...

The restaurant is nicely decorated, although it's from the previous owner, it works with a bit of  modern-styling. A few servers there are super nice, and a couple are straight-up China-style (no smiling, no talking, somewhat impatient), but order with the nice ones and you can't go wrong.

They have a wide range of items, serving Shanghai breakfast foods, to the many styles of dumplings, to special dishes made for 10, and even late-night food! Yes they have a late-night menu after 9pm!

This place has the best (so far) steamed pork dumpling with spoonful of soup inside, perfect thickness of pastry wrap, not too oily and delicious flavours! Hmm thinking of it makes me want some now... Anyway, all other dishes are wonderful, just can't go wrong. The non-dim sum dishes are huge, large portions that if there's only 2 people, there will be leftovers for sure. It's a great place for a large groups with their large round tables and even a private dining room.

The kitchen is half opened and you can watch them make the fresh pork dumplings. There are many chefs in the kitchen so food always comes out fast. I love this place!

    Imported service anyone?

For what this place makes up in taste, it lacks in service. They have some really unique dishes that showcase Shanghainese cuisine but I theorize that they must be treating their wait staff like dog poo because that's how we, and many of my friends from other visits, got treated here.

Food: We came here for a big family dinner and the one thing I am still drooling over today (as I sit here and dream of bathing in a pool of it), is their house dessert: glutinous rice balls served in a glutinous rice alcohol syrup with egg swirl (I swear, we Asians need to come up with more attractive names for food - always sounds perverted or just plain uncomfortable).

Service & Ambiance: This site has jumped from restaurant to restaurant and in the past 6 years, it's changed 3 times. The restaurant is sleek, bright and styled and offers lots of seating in big tables too. But in all honesty, their service makes me want to rip off my arm just so I have something to throw at them. Don't get me wrong, they do deliver your requests but they have a tendency to sprinkle a dash of attitude on it. Too many staff on the floor who probably are not getting paid very well.

If you can put up with their overdose of salted attitude on the dishes, check it out.

Food is outstanding.  We had a great server.. she was good... it was obvious that english wasnt spoken much there, but she kept up.

Food again was outstanding, the price was good for how much you get. only issue was that it took time to get our food, which could have done better.. but it was kinda busy.

Highly recommended.. amongst many other chinese joints within the area.

No. 3 road. Browngate road:  The place was dirty and the food was not so good.  We ordered crabs and someone ate one of the legs as we counted.  No apology, just a shoulder shrug and no reply from our crappy waitress.  We will never eat there again.
