3.5*s
Home style shanghainese food for good prices.
Get = mushrooms w beef & bamboo. Eggplant w chili garlic sauce. Hot and sour soup (more on the spicy side-- a plus in my books). Xiao long bao (come w carrot on the bottom and are thin skinned/ decent amount of soup.)
Notes: they are stingy with giving vinegar for the XLBs
Resto decor isnt anything fancy-- a bit hole in the wallish even but not as bad as other restaurants... At least there's heat at this Chinese Resto ;)
Service is good -- efficient and no rushing/ attitude
And this is in Vancouver... No need to venture to richmond. There's also free parking... Win! -
Review from Wendy Y.
I've never been here but my partner has a number of times (a while back). As we spied on other tables we noticed there were a lot of Asian couples in their fifties and sixties sharing 3-4 dishes of anything from noodle soups to pan fried goods. Because it was our first meal of the day, we decided to limit the quantity of our order. We got 2 bowls of salty soy milk, a roll of sticky rice, and a sao bing (with deep fried donuts).
The salty soy milk came first. I saw sliced donuts and chopped green onions floating in my bowl. The taste was rather...bland. The soy milk tasted very watered down. The only saltiness I could taste was from minced pickles hiding at the bottom of the bowl. I found the sliced donuts stale and on the doughy side.
The roll of sticky rice came next. It was cut into 4 pieces. Think of the roll like sushi rolls. Sushi rolls have stuffings in the middle and for this rice roll, it was stuffed with fluffed pork and pickles. The rice was WAY too soft. I am not a fan of how this restaurant prepared it.
The sao bing took a while to arrive. The owner said the flat bread would take sometime to bake. When it arrived we were impressed by its golden crispy crust. The deep fried donuts that accompanied with it looked fresh as well. I stuffed a stick of fried donut into the large air pocket of the sao bing and devoured it in a big mouthful. I felt like I was back in Asian again. The donuts were fresh and crispy and tasted nothing like the one swimming in my soy milk. This dish was well worth the wait. But here is the disclaimer, the dish is very oily. You may feel greasy and heavy after the meal.
The bill came to roughly $16. Despite the hit and miss experience, I would still come back to try other items on the menu.Listed in: Chinese Food, Shanghainese Food

Been here for lunch last year, and recently for dinner.
Overall? They're very good, very fast and efficient.
The food is tasty. Yummy.
We had three tables, each having the same type of dishes served.
From soup to fried fish and seaweed and various vegetable dishes.
I have to say, yes, it was indeed good.
My cousin pointed one thing which could be taken as good or a nuiscance.
The food came out "fast and furious". As soon as they put a dish down on the table, another one showed up before we could put the chopsticks to our lips!
Is that efficiency? Wow!
We were trying to eat as fast as we could to prevent dishes from piling up on the lazy susan.
Service was very friendly and efficient.
We'll recommended.
Oh, they don't take credit. Just cash or debit card. -

The only reason I came here is because my boyfriend loves it. He hyped it up so much that when I tasted the food, I was let down. Then again I've only been once and only tried three dishes, so this review isn't that fair across the board. If I go again, I'll update this. I absolutely love Chinese food and have had it all across Asia, so maybe my standards were too high for this place.
The fried rice cakes and shredded pork was ok, a little too greasy, and the rice cakes were a little undercooked for me. The soup dumplings which I thought this place was famous for were seriously nothing exciting. They weren't huge and they weren't the best I've ever had.
Plus, parking's horrible. The service was really good though and the food came quickly. I might have to go back and give the place another chance, maybe order other things or go for dinner.
Pros: quick service
Cons: quality of food
Verdict: I wasn't blown away but maybe I'll give this place a try again, considering many past reviewers really love this place. -

* Joyful numbing *
I returned yet again for my favourite dish, the rice cake and beef tendon Sichuan soup. The broth is complex, not overly salty, and has a nice heat level in addition to the slight tongue numbing that comes from Sichuan peppercorns.
This is a bowl which appears to be not very large, but it so crammed full of rice cakes and gelatinous tendons that it makes for an incredibly satisfying and fulfilling lunch all on its own. So reasonable too at just $6.50. Perfect for a cold rainy winter day.

Vancouver, BC
Another rainy Vancouver day.
Blergh...
It's days like this you sit in your car, stuck in traffic, praying that if one more dumba** honks at you, you will not be responsible for the Hulk-like carnage you will unleash on Kingsway at noon on a Tuesday...
Oooh, is it lunch already?
The General and I met up at this place just shortly after one of the Hulk's many run-ins with the Abomination on the West side. The waitresses were friendly, took our orders pretty quickly and the food came faster than Batman in Robin.
Now from what I didn't know was that The General was already a regular here and that he knew what was good. In my books, everything. I have to come back and try more dishes.
For the record we had (in order of my most interesting/have to have again/need to try)
Beef rolls: wrapped in a warm, buttery, flaky pastry-like pancake. The beef, cold and gelatinised. Thinly sliced cucumber, green onion and a smattering of hoisin. Food fit for Thor.
Baked Sesame pastry with preserved vegetable and ground pork: It's a dish you do yourself! You get the pastry pockets and fill them with the ground pork/preserved vegetable mixture. I would have had 4 if I had 1.
Beef Noodle: "Not beef tendon, but, y'know, beef" said The General. You know vague references on the subject of meat at a Chinese restaurant is not at all comforting, General. All the same, I have to try it next time.
Dan Dan Noodle: Slightly spicy, very peanuty, and a shiteload of noodles. Also served with crispy fried boneless pork for dipping.
Sweet sticky rice with shredded pork and Chinese donut: I know what your saying..."Chinese donuts? But that's for congee!". Well not anymore, Wonder Twin. "It's like a Chinese California roll!" I said dipping them into my awesome leftover Dan Dan sauce (they were a bit dry and needed some peanut love).
All-in-all this is one of the better Shanghainese restaurants in VANCOUVER; sorry but you are not budging me from my Wangist beliefs (see my review on Shanghai River, http://www.yelp.ca/biz... , for the back story).
Hulk just want to smash!...another plate of those beef rolls down... -

love love love!
small, family-owned restaurants that make authentic food from their country of origin, such as this place, are what makes chinese food in vancouver sooo good! the dishes and utensils are clean. the food quality is great. the service is consistent and usually there are about 4 or 5 waiters floating around so you can flag one of them down for anything.
menu items i won't miss ordering: shanghai dumplings, hot and sour soup, cold noodles with chicken, spicy beef noodle in soup. -

I don't know why people say that Chinese food in is "so good" in San Francisco. Personally, it can not compare to Vancouver Chinese food.
My proof? Ningtu Restaurant.
Shanghi dumplings
Chinese fried donuts
Fresh soy milk...
There is so much more! Unfortunately, I am massively lacking in my Mandarin speaking skills, so I cannot tell you what to order. Make certain bring a family member or friend that speaks Chinese.
If you are an omnivore - you'll love this place. -

Before exploring the different Shanghainese restaurants I'm Vancouver, Ningtu was the place we went to. After trying a couple different places, we returned to Ningtu and was underwhelmed by the taste of their food. The good thing about this place is that the prices are reasonable compared to the other places we've tried. Their dam dam noodles are very nutty and their dumplings are also ok. In terms of XLB buns, it's mediocre. If you're looking for a cheap place to try I would definitely go but if you want to be amazed try another place that I've reviewed.

DO NOT expect nice decor @ this location....this place has been around for ages and great to have lunch there. Must try their pan fried "thick noodles", deep fried Chinese donut (long version) dipped in HOT SOY MILK. Shanghai dumplings was average :)
