Review from Natalie B.
Vancouver, BC
Their biggest flaws are that they are only open during the summer months and they do not have a veggie patty option.
Their young staff is charming and friendly. Ask them about the "secret" menu. I love the "Buster style fries" off of the secret menu.
The burgers are not huge, but they are priced extremely reasonably (around $4). If you have an issue with it being too small, simply get a second burger. I personally find that between me and a friend, 2 burgers and 1 order of fries is enough to fill us both up without feeling too stuffed.
With Kitsilano beach just across the street, it is nice to grab a burger and sit on a bench and watch the ocean while you eat.Listed in: Kitsilano eats for under $10

Three strikes and you're out Nimby!
Since my last visit you've increased the prices of all the burgers and fries by 50 cents, the shakes are up 75 cents, and the crappy fountain pop is a quarter higher. Way to combat the HST!
I had a Dooblay which clocked in at a cool $6.71 all in.
It was small, and tasty, and a total rip-off.
Never again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Does Nimby mean "miniscule" in some language? 'Cause the burgers here are just a tad larger than sliders. Or think McDonald's plain hamburger buns.
Nevertheless, this is a gem of a beachside/roadside burger shack. Prices have gone up since Nimby first opened two years ago as the burger-only extension of Local Public Eatery, but considering the location, it's all reasonable. And considering your typical Vancouver beachside hamburger stand, this is pretty good.
I can see how Nimby invites immediate comparison to California's In-N-Out chain--the thousand-island sauce, fresh tomatoes and lettus, half-open paper wrapper, simple menu. But the owner also invites such comparison on his website, stating that the inspiration for this joint is what he remembers from road trips down to California with his father. Well, while the burgers aren't nearly as flavorful, Nimby's milkshakes are tastier (just as thick, but less cloyingly sweet) and the fries are tastier, too (a lot of people don't like In-N-Out's anemic, pale fries; Nimby's are almost the opposite--thin but fried to a dark golden brown). Comparisons aside, it's a decent burger. It's just that if you're really hungry, you can eat a few of them...
After Nimby closes (around 9:30pm, but depends on how busy they are), you can order from the menu inside the adjoining pub.Listed in: Good Burger

One sunny Vancouver afternoon the Huzz and I decided to head down to Kits beach for some chillaxin' time, and in preparation I checked Yelp to scope out somewhere worthy nearby to grab an inexpensive bite to eat. I came across Nimby Burger, and when I told my husband, a Nor-Cal native, that Nimby Burger was being described as In-n-Out-Burger-North, I think he peed his pants a bit from excitement. Like kids whose parents just gave them a dollar to buy candies, we booked it to the burger stand and eagerly placed our orders.
Now, although the style of the place is reminiscent of In n Out Burger, the food comes nowhere close. The burgers were fairly decent, but the fries were too salty and just nowhere near as good as the freshly cut ones they serve down south. Overall I definitely wouldn't say the food was bad, but I wouldn't specifically seek this place out if I were in the area. Although the menu items are cheap if you look at them individually, for two people to get burgers, fries and milkshakes you're lookin' at about $30.
I feel as though two stars is a bit harsh, but "I've experienced better" really sums it up. You can take my review with a grain of salt -my expectations of this place were very high. -

Perfect Size and Yum burgers.
The service speed is not the fastest but it is okay regarding its always busy. I saw a rat under the bench of this place, witch is in the middle of this place and the neighbors so I cant say in which kitchen this rat lives. -

I am guessing that the nimby name came from the fact the city didnt want them to tear down the current building to build something larger.
First this isnt in and out burger. Doesn't even come close. I don't know why people compare it to the legend. I ordered the cheese burger and it was blah. The patty was thin and not even that tasty. The rest of the burger was standard lettuce, tomato, 1000 island dressing combo. Just under 5 bucks for a ok burger.
If I go again I will order more patties in the burger and get the fries. For now I am sure the will do well over the summer as it is in a perfect spot and there real isnt any other decent fast food joints in the area. -

As a loyal In-N-Out patron and most likely the regular, considering how many times I visit California (and of course I go to In-N-Out EVERY time I go to California, perhaps multiple times*), I had to try Nimby's. What was the big deal?
Hm. I did ask for a cheeseburger and had to hold back from asking for animal fries and a vanilla milkshake, but I digress. The staff was incredibly helpful, and I got a burger at 11pm in Vancouver. That's amazing right there.
$4.47 for that cheeseburger? $5 for a burger here or $10-15 around the city? Taste? Really, really good. I cannot compare it to In-N-Out because it is fundamentally different. But I do not want to bore you. It does remind me of the heavenly land of California, and until then, it will do for now. If I ever want a late-night burger, this is definitely the place. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
*If any of you are wondering why I am such an In-N-Out freak, my body literally despises most preservatives in "fast food burgers" so therefore I am left to seek out the best/freshest of the "fast food" and that narrows it down to just a few places where I can eat and run. -

* In-n-Out copy *
For those of you familiar with In-n-Out, this is a Canadian copy of it. Everything from the style of fries to the cardboard box that they throw the fries into to the way they wrap the burger in paper to the simplicity of the menu to the secret ordering language (Buster=Animal style, etc.).
The one thing they sadly didn't copy fully was the consistency. Mind you, I know In-n-Out is just a fast food burger, but among the selection of other fast food burgers it is a better one, and you reliable get the same thing at every location.
Nimby did a good job copying the fries, which tasted freshly cut.
Where they fell a bit short was on the burger itself and the milkshake.
The burger was burned to the point of it being crispy. There was no juicy meat flavour left. It was more of just "charcoal seasoning" on top of a ton of lettuce, tomato and special sauce. This was a major disappointment.
The milkshake also didn't taste like a fresh cream shake. It was more of a McDonald's shake. Disappointment.
So while the idea of having an In-n-Out up here is a nice one for when you are craving a decent fast food burger, Nimby just doesn't fit the bill for me.Listed in: Vancouver Burgers

"The closest thing to In n Out Burger, north of the Californian border!"
"Burgers and the beach, they're going to make a killing on this location."
"McDonald's fries, eat your heart out!" Same size as McD's, but with the homemade taste appeal. "Ketchup? No need. These fries are good to the last salt lick!"
"If this was my burger stand, I'd give an option for a whole wheat bun and green leaf lettuce, I don't like iceburg, but at least it's fresh."
"This is like the better version of White Spot on the ferry, non greasy, water view and oh, just the right size. But if I were a boy, I'd probably want to eat 2 of these bad boys."
"$2.99 for a regular burger and $3.99 for a cheeseburger? No really? Can you afford to do that? Sure, just charge $2.75 for a pop, boring old fountain pop, coca cola style." Total rip off.
My review basically wrote itself verbally as I noshed on my burger at the beach. -

YUM!
I've been here three times in the past two weeks - the burgers are smaller (think In-N-Out) and toppings are minimal (cheese, fried onions can be added to the regular L, T, special sauce). They do have a little secret treat, however: ask for "Buster style" and they'll throw the patty on the grill with mustard already on it. I've never heard of this before - it's delicious!!
Fries are very good, although not transcendent. (The best fries in the city are at the Red Onion.) Fresh cut, thin, and the right amount of salt, but a little too greasy.
Best part about it is the setup: a little sidewalk burger bar right by the beach! Why wasn't this here 15 years ago? -

Possibly one of the best little veggie burgers I have ever had. If it weren't in such a nightmare location I would go more often and end up very very fat.

Nimby makes an OK burger. nothing to write home about as the patty is pretty thin, but it comes with lots of lettuce, tomatoes and tasty secret sauce. the bun is pretty nice too. staff are great and service is pretty quick.

I've been meaning to try this place ever since it opened so I finally did on this beautiful sunny weekend. I am a big fan of In-N-Out in my years in California and dearly miss the simple menu of burger, cheese burger and fries (as well as the affordable prices). I secretly hoped that Nimby would be all that I missed about California...
And the verdict is YES!!!!!! I LOVE NIMBY!!!!! We got cheeseburgers and shared the fries. For an extra $1, you can make the fries "Buster style". I saw someone order it and we just had to have it! This is similar to animal style at In-N-Out - they put their special mayo, melted cheese and onion on the fries. The burgers were almost identical to what I remember of In-N-Out. The fries are actually really similar too..maybe not as thin.
I heard a lot of people comment on how terrible the fries are, but I think its an acquired taste :) To any In-N-Out fans, it's AWESOME to be able to find these fries in Vancouver! To McDonald/other fries fans, you'll soon come around to appreciating these fries!
The prices are great for the burger and fries though I feel that the fountain drinks are a rip off (half water + half soda costs more than the delicious fries!)
The best part is that you just walk across the street with your order and get a stunning view of the beach and all that Kits has to offer. Definitely a bit better scenery than the neon lights at In-N-Out.
Minus one star for the craaaazy lineup and how hungry I became just watching everyone else order. -

You know, they're not the best burgers, they're not the best fries, they're not the best shakes... but somehow you have to walk away from your Nimby experience saying that it kicks ass.
The perfect location, a perfectly simple menu, and a name/brand/style/packaging that you can't but get a giggle from.
They only offer 1 burger with a couple upgrades... bacon, cheese... and a few shake flavours to go along with the fries.
It's so simple that it runs head-on into the often over-ambitious, exclusive, and pompous dining experiences popping up around town... like the Local which it shares its kitchen with. -

Most of the reviews here compare this to In-N-Out chain in California. Sorry, guys, but I like Nimby's better!
The fries are what make the difference for me in comparing the two. In-N-Out ones seemed spongy to me. I went a year later, and confirmed that, yes, they do still feel spongy.
My first Nimby's fries weren't great, either. I liked the texture of the potato, but it was Way Too OverSalted. I was sure that this couldn't be the actual recipe, so I guessed that maybe two people salted it without knowing the other had. I'm really glad I tried it again. The perfect amount of salt that allows you to eat it solo, but not too much so you can use ketchup, if you want.
I'm glad reviewers compared it to In-N-Out, though, since that's what caught my attention... especially the part that it's priced like In-N-Out! I don't love burgers enough to justify going to all the gourmet places.
Cheeseburgers are a $1 more than the regular. They must make a killing on the cheese!
I've never bought drinks or shakes here. That seems to be the main complaint in the reviews, so maybe that's why I like this place so much!
There are two "10 minutes only" Nimby parking spots in the lot off Yew St. Some benches, but not really, so just walk to the park across the street. The paper box carton they put it in is pretty handy for that. -
Review from John C.
The name of this business had me at a loss until I realized that no, they're really not in my backyard and I have to go through a little bit of effort to come have a burger here.
This is the kind of Southern California burger stand that I appreciate. The thin patties, their special sauce, the classic toppings...this reminds me of picking up a cheeseburger at any spot in California and getting a tasty result. The staff is exceptionally friendly. Perhaps the vicinity of the beach helps wile the hours away while working.
If you're coming to Kits beach and want a good burger, this is worth the trip.
