Updated: Dropped to three stars based on two recent experiences. Nothing horrible, but quality was less-than and service was questionable. One more chance, Nikkyu. One more chance.

A consummate multitasker, I am typing as I polish off last night's delicious leftovers. The food and service were both impressive:
The original order went through yummyweb, but when i didn't receive a confirmation call I contacted Nikkyu directly to follow-up. Good thing, because they hadn't received the order; bad thing, because they were now closed. Disappointment. And then. The friendly fellow on the end of the line asked for my order and said he could have it to me--and my starving guest--within 45 minutes. Relief. 20 minutes he was at my door, smiling and apologizing! Time to eat!
The dragon roll was a big hit and caused an awkward moment as we both casually (longingly) stole glances at the last piece. My good hostess instincts prevailed and I insisted I was simply too full...
The tempura was hot, the preservative-free soya was plentiful and we enjoyed the spicy tuna, California, princess roll and dynamite! It wasn't the tightest rolled sushi ever, but given the quick delivery and the fact that they made an exception, well, it's a fair trade. $50 bought enough food to feed two hungry people and provide leftovers for both. Cost was reasonable (free delivery over $20) and the sushi breakfast I am currently enjoying is, as they say, priceless.

I hit up Nikkyu one night at about 8pm for some much needed sushi. There was only one other table occupied yet the service was still somehow incredibly slow.

We ordered dinner specials and weren't offered any tea or water (or beverages for that matter.) There is a huge language barrier and it took 3 minutes for them to figure out my friend was asking for hot water with lemon.

They brought the items in a weird order an item or two at a time. My friend received their first items long before I received mine. Then when they brought the main meal his box included 2 of the items they had already brought him...so we got double what we ordered for some items. My meal was alright quality, not bad but nothing special about it. My friend wouldn't touch their salmon because it was a very suspicious color of brown, the other fish didn't look great but they were at least edible.

I wasn't really impressed and since I no longer live in the area I doubt I will return.

Reasonably good sushi at a reasonable price. Nothing is going to blow your socks off, but the food here is consistent, the service is usually quick and friendly. Bizarrely, they hoard menus and don't like to give one to each person at the table.

I love Nikkyu for takeout (or delivery when I can't muster the strength to trudge the four blocks to pick it up). It's always ready when I am told it will be ready, and they have never made a mistake with my order.

I have never had sashimi here, but the standard sushi roll fare is good.

Because my friends and I refused to wait an hour for Toshi Sushi just across the street. We decided to take a chance on Nikkyu.

Needless to say, we left happy and satisfied. The sushi was decent and cheap! I ordered a tempura ramen and that was pretty good actually. My friend said he really enjoyed their teriyaki chicken, saying that it was the BEST he's ever had. I don't know about that but it was pretty good though. Their romantic dinner specials are pretty awesome. They have a unagi rice plate for $10.50 and they're really generous with the unagi and sashimi.

We also ordered sake and they were doing a buy one big hot sake get one small bottle for free. How could we say no to that?

The service was prompt and helpful. The restaurant's pretty small but we had no trouble getting seats. I'd rate this place four stars but the owner (I think that's who he was) pretty much kept dissing Seattle, and when you have four people who live in Seattle visit your restaurant, that is NOT COOL, mister.

Other than that, solid food for a good price.

I went here last night with my boyfriend, using a group buy deal I bought awhile back. The restaurant was very small and empty. Granted, it was a Sunday night and not exactly during a rush-hour of dinner. The food quality was quite good. The salmon sushi tasted very fresh and the tempura batter was light and delicious. I'm a big fan of their miso cod, but I wish it had less bones in it (I've gone to several places that have really good miso cod without hardly any bones). The tea was only lukewarm, so that wasn't so great... But the worst part was they took forever to make my boyfriend's yakisoba. I ordered a dinner box and the cod. He ordered a few pieces of salmon sushi and a chicken yakisoba. My food arrived in the expected timeframe, as did his sushi. But 20 minutes later, he still didn't have his food. I was already full and finished eating my meal. When the server came around and my boyfriend cancelled his order, she said it was only about five minutes until it would be ready. Are you kidding me? 25 minutes for a yakisoba when we're the ONLY people in the restaurant and you got my dinner box finished 15 minutes earlier? We told her thanks, but no thanks, that we had to rush out because we needed to be somewhere. She then asked if we wanted it for takeout, hoping we'd still pay for it. We firmly said no and they dropped it. I wasn't very impressed.

"STARVING! Can't think straight. Ooh, here's a sushi place. Let's go in."

It was a bit tricky manoeuvring the stroller into the doorway, as there's an odd bamboo room divider thing only about two feet inside the door--don't know how you'd get in with a wheelchair. Once we were in, we sat down wherever we liked, as it was pretty dead at 6pm on a Saturday. The first thing I noticed was the country music playing. NOT a fan, but I managed to tune it out during our meal.

The service was pretty prompt & other than one of the waitresses almost getting her long hair in my food, there were no issues. Our tea was refilled before it was empty & our food arrived quickly.

We had a couple of bentos & I have to say I enjoyed the teriyaki chicken--it wasn't overly sweet & the meat was slightly better quality than some of the other cheapo sushi places in East Van. The Cali rolls were good, tempura wasn't too over-battered. The miso came plain, no diced tofu or seaweed or green onions to dress it up & the chunks-of-iceberg-lettuce-with-a-few-grated-carrot -bits salad was about the same as any other sushi place around, except that the dressing was oddly thick. Totally edible though.

If you're looking for a decent cheap place for run-of-the-mill japanese food, this place fits the bill.

Nikkyu is on the dry stretch of Main, past all the popular shops by only a block or two, it falls off many people's mental map.
I found it while exploring a bit farther out than I usually go, and I quite liked it. I'd recommend it for any locals in the area.

Don't let the front fortress doors scare you away, walk past the (empty) patio's through the looking glass......!
Once inside you'll find that this is a cute little oasis.

I've been missing Sushi lately due to my dietary restrictions, but I'm determined to bring all variety of ethnic foods back regardless.

Fresh yummy Sushi at fair prices, good service and it's cute inside too. :-)

I dropped in hurriedly to order take out (after cruising up and down Main without any luck finding a parking spot near other tried and true sushi joints) and was surprised by the good service we received. While we waited for our food, we were offered seats and served piping hot green tea and mints.

At only 5pm on a Saturday, the tables were already filling up with mostly young families. The many dishes that covered each table were vibrant and delicate. Everyone looked like they were really enjoying the food.

The dine in only specials of fresh oysters ($1) and toro sashimi ($1) could either prove to be a smart way to get you in the door or cheapy marketing gimmick gone wrong, but I'll update you when my sister goes back with her bf who lives in the 'hood.

If you're into experimental sushi, you've probably had your share of mango smoked salmon rolls ($4.95), but pear chopped scallop rolls ($3.95), are new even to me and doesn't sound half bad.

My chopped scallop, California, and negitoro rolls ($3.85 ea) all hit the spot nicely for my sushi craving. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but Nikkyu wouldn't be half bad if you're feeling lazy cuz they've got free delivery!

I took my friends visiting from France here for their very first sushi experience. The place I wanted to take them to was closed so we went here and at first I was a bit scared because if it was bad sushi, they'd never try sushi again. But I was put at ease. The tuna sashimi was fresh. All of the rolls we had were great: california, spicy tuna, dynamite.  The gyoza was standard. The ebi sunomono was a little to lemony for my taste, but i shared it so it was doable. The miso soup was good too. They also had wild sockeye salmon today. But I don't eat salmon.

It was A-OK but it gets an extra star for having delivery because I'm often in the nearby and could use some delivery sushi.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday and the service was really really slow even though there were only like 2 other customers in the place.

The sushi is pretty good - small but good. The wild salmon sashimi was interesting and we had a large assortment of rolls. No complaints there. But I just can't stand to wait for so long for my food.

Blegh.  Cannot say this is anywhere I'd go again.  Had a range of food for lunch yesterday, after being thwarted in my quest for Zipang or Sushiyama.  Sunday Sushi on Main is a challenge, it seems!

Had tempura (okay), miso ramen (i've made better myself from frozen), and deep friend tuna (yech, tasted canned), salmon roll (warm old fatty farmed salmon), and unagi (didn't dare try, looked kinda slimey)

    Avoid avoid avoid.

Nikkyu is a great neighbourhood Japanese diner. The food is tasty and they always seem to have a good selection of fish for their sashimi and sushi. The hot dishes are also tasty and they do an interesting range of speciality sushi rolls, including the Main Street roll which is bbq unagi, cucumber and avocado rolled with light tuna on the outside served in skinny jeans and a check shirt whilst riding a fixed-gear bike.

We go there with the kids every couple of months. They enjoy many of the hot dishes, including a really good Agedashi Tofu and light and crispy tempura.

The service is fine overall. The ambience is very much a japaese-style diner with bare tabletops. The big TV can be a distraction at times.

If I lived across town, I probably wouldn't make a trip here, but it's a great place to have on your doorstep.

for years i have wished upon many a stars that there was such a thing as delivery sushi...GOOD delivery sushi...

    and along comes nikkyu!
ive only eaten @ the restaurant once...and it was very good. i love how they have the wild salmon sashimi option on their menu. the decor is cute and simple and the people working are nice and efficient.

ive ordered for delivery here many times...phone service and manners are fabulous.  the wait time for the food is reasonable....pretty much the same amount of time for an order of pizza, if not less.
the most recent dinner i had delivered to my lap was the: tuna + salmon sashimi Don (big fresh slices of fish...mmm), gommae (great portion of the spinach salad and sesame sauce) with agedashi tofu (standard...they had the sauce and tofu separated but the tofu got a little soggy anyway being couped up in its container).
i sampled my roomies dynamite roll, dragon roll (this is the BEST!!! yum yum, yum!!) and avocado and salmon roll.  everything was excellent!

good friendly delivery service as well.

now i need to start wishing for delivery dim sum....

Don't go out of our way to eat here, but if you find yourself looking for Japanese on main street - and Toshi Sushi up the street is closed - why not? The service is friendly, the food is average to good, and the air conditioning is on overdrive on hot days.

Decent sushi at a good price. The miso soup was exceptionally good and I got the spicy tuna roll, which was spicier than expected. The only real downside of the dining experience was that the waitress never came back to refill tea or check on how we were getting on.
