Review from Cherie K.
I discovered this little gem after visiting Flirt cupcakes next door. I was quite intrigued when I saw their sign advertising vietnamese sandwiches. I had only tried a vietnamese sandwich once and it wasn't from an ethnic restaurant, so I was anxious to try.
The store itself is a little run down and not very attractive, however, that didn't dissuade me. They had a vast selection of vietnamese dishes, but I was only interested in the sandwiches. There was a younger couple running the place and were friendly enough. I ordered a pulled pork and chicken sandwich combo, which included a full sandwich (sub), two salad rolls and a pop all the $7.25! How could you beat that?
The sandwich was very tasty and fresh, as were the salad rolls. I've been looking for an affordable vietnamese sandwich place, and now I've found one! -

Sure - this still beats Subway, but I think that Nhon Hoa serves the least tasty Banh Mi I've ever had. Why?
1) The bread - on a Saturday afternoon, mine tasted kinda stale. For my subs, I like my baguettes soft, fresh, and light.
2) No pickled daikon - Banh mi is never complete without pickled daikon.
I liked a few things about my sandwich:
a) The Price - $4 for a sub with cold cuts
b) The Cold Cuts - yeah, they were still tasty
To top it off, Nhon Hoa is cash only. And I don't like carrying cash. And this place isn't worth paying $5 (to use their cash machine) or walking down to Shopper's Drug Mart (to buy something and getting cash back - Whyte Ave is strangely underserved by Credit Union ATMs). -

Food is fresh, and tasty-prices are reasonable but the atmosphere screams
GET Me the H out of HERE!
Food and taste for me is the most important thing, but I cant get over the fact that I really don't enjoy eating here.
Have had some meat balls and other appetizer's they do nicely. I come to this place for the wonton soup! I have ordered it many times.
The owners work quickly to put out a tasty snack-which I appreciate and, always thank them for their food-but just don't come here regularly??. Why you ask?
Basically the chairs or stools are not very comfortable, I feel like I need to visit a chiropractor after each meal here. I sometimes have to get up just to stretch out the kinks.
I didn't use the bathroon this last visit, but have not had problems with how they set that up. The place does do brisk business, with what seems to be a very trendy and diverse crowd. Which is why they are still around when a number of other restaurants in the neighborhood have been either torn down-or burnt to the ground.
The few people I did ask about this place all said wonderful thiings about their vietnamese submarines-which I have not yet tried. im not usually a big submarine fan-because I am very capable of still making sandiwches at home-thank you very much!
So whats my problem! I like the food and the owners and what they are doing -with their menu -I think I would go several times a month-if they had a better space for their customers to enjoy their great food and the extra effort they put into making their dishes. It is also very hot in that place-so wearing shorts and a t shirt is an absolute must any time of the year!! Idunno maybe they also have tanning beds in the back of the place.
Any way TAKE IT OUT and youll be happy-
BUT if you Dine IN you might leave and forget about how good the food actually was-while your flipping through the yellow pages in search of some back and neck pain relief.
The tables and chairs-just dont work here as a dine in experience -which is too bad. -

Vietnamese subs are so delicious and Nhon Hoa is one such beacon of hope on Whyte Ave that serves up a variety of subs, along with soups and side orders.
What I like best about Nhon Hoa is the extremely local aspect of it. It's like a small little shop (right next to Flirt cupcakes) with very basic seating capacity and extremely affordable food ($3.50 for a sub!). Perfect for an afternoon walk-by on Whyte or a catch up on what's happening in the Vue weekly with your lunch.
The cold cut combo sandwich is one that I've really started liking. Although Vietnamese subs are a "western" concept, in that they're found mainly in places with immigrant Vietnamese populations; the sub sticks true to the roots of the very minimalist kind, we now expect of of Vietnamese food. The sandwiches are served on a long and thin sub, (looks like a real submarine, actually!) with cilantro, jalapeño and some very basic dressing. I like that the main flavors associated with a particular sub lie strictly with the basic ingredients and not some fancy sauce overpowering the flavors.
Must try - must want. Good stuff, at affordable rates. Feels almost like you're making up something at home and lacks the grease and heaviness that has become a norm of fast food. -

The subs here are excellent and cheap. The place doesn't look like much, and it's fairly basic inside. But, tasty food at low prices. I'll be back for sure.

Let me start off with this. It's a Vietnamese sub place and it's less than 5 minutes from my house.
I come from Calgary where there are numerous awesome Vietnamese sub places. Unfortunately Edmonton is not nearly up the same level as Calgary in this small, but extremely important category.
The subs here are tasty and less than $5. The salad rolls are delicious as well. I'm not much of a bubble tea person but they have quite a selection of those as well.
I'd stay away from the fried spring rolls, they keep them under a heat lamp and they've never looked very appetizing.
That being said I usually eat here at least once a week and I really dig the chicken satay sub. -

The banh mi needs some work, but the wonton soup was good. And for those who are concerned about such things, the family that runs this place is friendly. I'd recommend Nhon Hoa Sandwich Bar to people who like this kind of grub.

The banh mi (Vietnamese sub) craze has hit Whyte Avenue. Nhon Hoa already has a reputation for serving excellent subs and fast food from its Chinatown location. The subs are delicious and inexpensive (they start at a mere $3.50). I had a tofu sub and it was full of tofu cubes, cilantro, carrots, cucumbers, and mayonnaise on a warm baguette. There is also the option for a combo with a bubble tea, soup, or spring rolls. I would stay away from anything kept under the heat lamps, but if it is made fresh, go for it. I will definitely head to Nhon Hoa if the sub craving hits me in this part of the city.

I've been eating a lot here recently. Its just so good for the price. I have also discovered the vegetarian salad rolls. Skip the fried and mediocre spring rolls! Go for the salad rolls! Yum.

It's about time there were Vietnamese subs on Whyte. Subs are good, but don't bother with the combos. The soup is not worth the time. The salad rolls are meh.
