This restaurant is super tacky or super retro depending on how you want to look at it. It's filled with EVERYTHING Elvis, I mean EVERYTHING!!! Some people love it and others hate it. I'm not going to lie, it definitely makes me smile when I walk in here.
When I first moved to Ottawa a lot of my friends raved about the pizza here. When they finally dragged me to try it I had tried Gabriel's Pizza which was another favourite in Ottawa. So I had a pizza showdown in my head. The crust at Newport is actually cooked so it doesn't taste raw on the bottom unlike Gabriel's and uses much better ingredients. Toppings are solid and doesn't taste cheap. The pizza is pretty solid but it's super heavy on the crust. I don't mind it but definitely not my favourite.
Has anyone other than me tasted funky flavoured meats on their delivery pizza? I've pointed it out to my friends at times and they are starting to taste it...you don't get that at Newport though! Like most places in Ottawa there really is no cheap pizza option.
Try it once if not for the atmosphere! I haven't tried any of the other items on the menu. -

SOOO, It's a gorgeous Friday evening, so I thought I would celebrate by picking up a combination pizza from Newport. I have always enjoyed their pizza's. The crust is thick, and has a nice crunch, and the toppings are generous, especially the cheese. Unfortunately, the cook added a little something extra on my combination pizza tonight, green peppers, mushrooms, pepperoni and a long curly hair baked into the cheese.
I always get weary about getting pizza from here, because you never know what you will find on your pizza. The setup is not ideal. The pizza is made next to the entrance as well as the cash where many patrons line up to pay. I have noticed several times in the past, the cook touching his face, and the lack of hand washing. From the looks of it, the restaurant seems to be lacking a sink where the pizza is prepared; therefore the cook cannot wash his hands between orders. Not only that, but no beard guards or hair nets are supplied for the cooks to use, so it is just an accident waiting to happen, for future pizza's and unsuspecting hungry customers.
For myself, cleanliness seals the deal, or breaks the deal!!! The last thing I want is to find another hair in my food, so that is why Newport's off my list of restaurants to eat at.
I know Mayor Watson enjoys eating at Newport...wonder if he ever encountered an "unwanted surprise" baked in one of his meals? -

Today I went for brunch at an overpriced place in the Glebe where they served a mediocre omelette that might have verged on enjoyable if it was not cold. However, the server was young, sweet and earnest and it was a busy morning so --- being Canadian --- I did not complain. However, after a few bites of chilly omelette, I realized that I would much rather be having breakfast at the Newport.
Decor-wise, the Elvis art at the Newport brings kitsch to new levels. The place has no snob appeal. It's the kind of restaurant where men read the sports page and women in their sixties bring them eggs any way they want them. It's a place where grandparents take the little ones for pizza to give the parents of Westboro a few moments' peace without fear of chilly looks at normal kid behaviour. And, it's a place that serves thousands of free Christmas dinners every year to folks who need them - and each dinner comes with a pair of handknit socks or mittens on the side (I know a lady who knits more than a hundred pairs every year to donate and she's one of many who contributes to the Newport's good work.)
Go there a couple of times and you're a regular. Your order may hit the kitchen before your butt hits the chair.
But back to the food. Since I've only had breakfast there and the odd slice of late-night pizza, I'll stick to morning fare. Newport truly has the best eggs benedict/florentine in Ottawa. I can't think of anyplace else where the benny comes with what some (not me, but some) might consider too much Hollandaise sauce. On the side, home fries are tasty - and would be crisp if I didn't intentionally drown them in my surplus Hollandaise... We've also tried various permutations of omelette, basic breakfasts, and hungry man breakfasts. Things arrive hot, quickly and to order.
Another reviewer had trouble with curt service? Well, perhaps the server was just having a bad day. I bet she would have warmed up if the customer had taken a minute to ask her how her day was going. Me, I'd rather have somebody like Mom serve me -- she who wouldn't let a cold omelette near my table -- than someone who might be a bit more perky but a lot less savvy about what folks want to eat.
If you want curly endive and chipotle foam, look elsewhere. If you want some honest eggs with no pretensions, Newport is the place. -

if i could give two and a half stars i would.
i tried the primavera 'no cheese please' pizza, i loved it tonight it was amazing. in fact, i'll probably order it again pretty soon. yet other times back when i did eat diary i found their pizzas to be just okay, nothing spectacular.
but i do like to give my money to independent shops and businesses in the neighbourhood plus i love the philanthropic events the owner does at this store so if i do have 'pizza' i try to make it newport. -

The food isn't very good. The decor is all Elvis (the home of the Elvis Sighting Society). They do great work for the community and that's the only reason why I can think that they are still in business. If you love Elvis and don't have taste buds, then this is the place for you!

How can you not like a place that immortalizes Elvis. A good dependable restaurant that serves up a fun experience. Really nice serving staff, and a front counter, old-deli style front counter. Always worth a visit.

Great place for cheesy yummy pizza and beer. Don't bother with the rest of the menu. But you gonna love a good dive and funny salute to Elvis.

Way overrated. Cheap on toppings, over-priced pizza. Curt service. Tacky atmosphere. Elvis is dead.
