stormtrooper masks!
great selection
friendly dude that has been there for years.
the guy will order stuff for you if he can.
and if costs too much you can usually do a little haggling. -

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place yet! I've been there a bajillion times (I counted). It's not a huge store but they have a decent selection of costumes, accessories and wigs.
The owner seems to know the hubby and I now and he's pretty helpful and let's us try stuff on. We usually luck out when we need something to finish off a costume.Listed in: April Challenge: The Underdog

This costume shop is great for theme-partiers, pirate enthusiasts, and sexual role players, and has some of the more unique and complex items in its inventory.
Their specialty seems to be full rubber facemasks, which look very realistic and even adapt to look like they're talking when you talk. With over 60 to choose from, they have everything from Nixon and Reagan, to Moe, Larry and Curly. You'll probably want to open the breathing holes with scissors once you get them home though, especially if you plan on drinking through the mouth slot.
The store is altogether limitless in its collection of costume accessories, like capes and eye patches, glow sticks and plastic gladiator-style weapons. Lots of wigs too, with bright neon shiny ones for ravers and people going as the band Kideo from the TV show "Kids Can Rock and Roll". http://i50.photobucket...
A lot of the items are imported from the United States, and the prices aren't cheap considering that you're only planning on wearing a Bruce Willis mask for one night. But if you do want to look like a pro on Halloween without doing a lot of arts and crafts, you're going to have to splurge and live a little. That way, you can act like a total douchebag and people will just think that you're mimicking Bruce Willis. -

This place is kinda old, remembered going in several years back looking for a whoopee cushion (as the one I had back then broke). Found what I wanted and was very happy with it. Fast foreward quite a few years later, needed some costume parts for Halloween last year so I thought I'd make a stop in. I think the owner has changed, although I think it's still family owned.
Good assortment of costumes, jokes, and acessories although prices a bit high. -

Maybe I've just been to a lot of costume and novelty shops, but this one just isn't that special. The stuff is way over-priced and has pretty much all the same stuff you'd expect at any novelty/costume shop. They do however have some really unique things to be found so if you're stuck for a costume part or a silly gift this isn't a bad last resort. Don't expect glowing customer service, when I was there there was a gruff, overweight, middle-aged man eyed my partner and I as we went around the store and didn't say a word to us.

I used to frequent here a lot, but the last time I went left a bad taste in my mouth.
I was checking out the wigs, and there was a sign saying "ask for assistance when trying on wigs", so I asked the man at the counter if i could try on a wig, and he said "ya.... No".
which left me confused, yes? no??
when i asked him which one he meant, he rudely said "no!".
wtf?
disappointing. -

New York Novelties is by far the best novelty store in the lower mainland.
They've got an amazing selection of masks - from rubber monsters to the coolest and most elegant dominoes; wigs, costumes, crazy hats, makeup, and those crazy practical jokes which used to be advertised in the backs of comix.
One of the best things about this store is the fact that unsold merchandise just seems to migrate to the deep corners. Watch carefully and take your time: you'll find that 70 eras dribble glass of your dreams.
Possibly the only place in Vancouver you get to choose between a variety of whoopie cushions.Listed in: Mainly Main

If you are looking for a good selection of wigs, this place has a rainbow of colours to choose from. They also have everything from masks, to stockings, to rubber chickens...
New York Novelties has a selection of adult costumes as well, which are a bit overpriced, and the owner of the shop can be a bit weird about letting you open them up to try them out. Typically he eyeballs you while you walk around the store, sure I may look like a bit of a hobo punk-ass on my good days, but I am certainly not going to rip off the gag glasses I have tried on with the penis nose. Chill my son! Actually I ended up buying the dicknose spectacles for a stagette, and they have a light in them that blinks = priceless.Listed in: Tips from the Halloween Queen

Review from Steve L.

After trying a couple of other "sure thing" costume stores and not finding what I was looking for I finally headed to New York Novelties, where I should have started my search and saved myself a lot of unnecessary running around.
Within five minutes of being in the store I found what I was looking for, a green, straight, wig. The owner was friendly enough, but I wouldn't say he was the most pleasant individual I've meet or want to go have a beer with. He had no problems finding me the colour and style of I was looking for but was very quick to ring up the sale without allowing me to try the wig on, which I wasn't too impressed with.
Their selection of masks, costumes, and accessories was impressive for the size of the store. They even had a selection of adult costumes and "accessories" which I discovered while mindlessly walking through the store. I guess this is a good thing to know if Im invited to a S&M party.
If you're planning ahead for All Hallow's Eve, or if you're getting ready for a sexy-fun time party check out New York Novelties. But If you're looking for the most pleasant customer service experience you might want to check out elsewhere.
