GREAT FOOD! Haven't had a good breakfast/brunch/early lunch in a while.

1 Star up for having delicious Sun-dried tomato bagels :D

1 Star up for being reasonably priced  $

1 Star up for having a great lox, egg, and onion scramble (Y)

1 star up for having very nice staff. The water man (?_?) was nice, our waitress was sweet and recommended me to have the Nova lox instead of regular lox because she said it was less salty, and she took care of us the entire time.

Also the lady at the register was very nice and asked how everything was and if we had enjoyed it. I of course said yes.

I guess the last star up is for the simple décor and community/family-like feel that you get when you come in. Also, it was around 1:45 on a Sunday and we were seated quickly and had no problems parking either.

The food simply isn't that good here.  Eggs and corn beef has were overly salty and I felt it was kinda expensive for what I paid for.  Maybe I should have just got a bagel or soup?

On the plus side, the wait is short although the place was packed.  Parking was easy and waitstaff was nice.

I wanted to like this place, but just didn't enjoy it as much as everyone else.

Tried and true coffee shop, through and through.

You walk in and it seems like the breakfast equivalent of Cheers- everybody knooooooowwwsss your name. If they don't, you're new.

They're bagels are delicious. They have all the jewish deli type dishes from lox to pastrami on rye to matzo ball soup. I really like their smoked salmon omelet and their home fries.

Everything is reasonably priced and there is a coffee drink on which they pile a quarter tub of cool whip on top. Ask about that.

I don't live close (AT ALL) but I make the drive as often as I can. It's just a good coffee shop!

    Pretty solid.

Place needs to be remodeled, but outside of that the food is good and the service is always good.

Breakfast is solid, nothing amazing but a good solid breakfast (potatoes are awesome) and the price is reasonable.

    Reuben is very good.

Chicken salad not that great...bought some to go. They use dark meat and it doesn't have much flavor.

I have been coming here since I was a kid with my dad, and the food is always really good and the owners of the place are nice to boot.  If I come in at lunch I usually get a club with fries and for breakfast I usually load up on the eggs, bacon, bagels, and home fries.  I would suggest getting here at an off time for breakfast or lunch if you can, since it can get packed.  However, they are usually quick so even if there is a wait it shouldn't be too long.  It is nice having places like this around that keep up the consistency throughout the years.

This is an amazing New york style coffee shop.
Kenny and Ziggys should be ashamed of themselves compared to these folks.
    best Matzo Ball soup EVER!
also the matzo brie is fantastic with home fries.
Their bagels are the stars of the show---perfect crust, warm on the inside, made the right way!
The prices are incredibly affordable and restaurant is always packed. I live across town and dont even hesitate thinking about driving over just for breakfast. It is that good!
Also, if you are jewish or live in the neighborhood- you are guaranteed to run into someone you know! This restaurant is family owned and it feels like you are amongst a group of old family friends while you are dining.

Can we tawk? There will not be any kvetching, but there may be some shmaltz.

I finally paid a visit the New York Coffee Shop to eat my most favorite meal of the day, and I gotta say, if I lived closer, I'd probably be a regular.  Yes, that's right, you would find me planted at their counter or ensconced in one of the little booths, noshing away on the $4.65 weekday breakfast special.  It's a veritable bah-gan I tell ya: 2 eggs any style, choice of home fries, grits, tomato or potato pancake, bagel or toast, butter and jam.

This humble little coffee shop will take you back, even if you've never been back there, to an era of comfort and comfort food (though I can easily see NYCS in a David Lynch setting too, but that's my own morbid imagination).

Craving lox (salty smoked salmon) or nova (not so salty smoked salmon) with a shmear? They've got you covered. Need some chopped liver, or better yet, chopped liver and onions in your life? Come heah whydon'cha. They got Kosher style corned beef, salami, and pastrami. Matzoh ball soup.

Don't be a schmuck! Go next door to buy some bagels and cream cheese to take home.

Geriatrics and people with geriatric sensibilities will love this place.

    Zie ga zink!

One of the few ma and pa family diner type restaurants left in Houston - and one of the only ones in Meyerland (that I know of at least). Friendly service, fresh ingredients and made with a lot of love (never knew what that really meant but you just know when it is).

Perfect place for breakfast/brunch (hence the name), but also serves sandwiches, burgers, paninis, soups/salads. I mainly go for their SPFs - just the right amount of heat in the fryer! Crispy and still hot when they land on your table.

The restaurant is also connected to their bakery, which serves all things from bread and bagels to cookies (oatmeal raisin and choco chip for the win!)

I called my mom (who was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, before moving to Florida) after I walked out of here.  "Ma," I says.  "MA!  It's your son, Jimmy."
"Jimmy!  How's Houston?!  When are ya gonna meet a nice girl down there?"
"Ma, I've been married for 5 years.  I met a nice girl...  in 2004!"
My mom started going on about how I needed a nice girl.  Rambling for minutes.  I cut her off.
"Ma, remember that place just south of Poughkeepsie we used to go for bagels?"  She fell quiet, thinking of that little shop.  Something innocuous sounding, like Route 9 Bagels.
"I just ate at a place that reminded me of it - the bagels here are that good."
I could hear her smiling over the phone.  That brief memory made her day.  It made my day - and by association, so did New York Coffee Shop.

Get a bagel and some coffee here.  Home fries are good too - nice and onion-y.  Fast, fresh coffee always helps.  And when you're done eating and pay your tiny bill, call your mom.  She'd love to hear from you.

How could so many great Yelpers be wrong!?! Here's my story:

I had such high hopes from all the great reviews. The food was just okay. Our entire experience was probably ill affected  by the absolutely horrible service, so maybe the food would have tasted better if everything else didn't just absolutely suck.

I fully expected the place to be packed, but it seems we missed the breakfast rush by coming in at 1:30 pm. You'd think this would be a good thing BUT...

The service was off the charts bad. The place was not very well kept. And everything just seemed to be rolling at a snail's pace.

Maybe the waitress was just tired from a busy morning, but that would still not explain why she appeared so indifferent about us. She never offered us any drinks...thank goodness the busser came by with water. Heck, the neighboring waitress temporarily gave us better service...though my neck just about had whiplash from all the rubbernecking. At least she acknowledged me.

On a side note, we did see the owner...he passed our table not once, but twice, and despite checking on other tables around us we were never graced by his visit (nor was the other table next to us who also had wonder-waitress). Maybe he knows to steer clear of her tables all together.

Finally, I asked our waitress for coffee and my husband asked for a large apple juice. I  got no cream with the coffee. The LARGE apple juice looked like it came in a thimble. Come to think of it, I didn't see any glasses that were smaller, though clearly the menu offers both a small and large (the "large" being a whopping $2.50...which would not be so whopping with an appropriately sized glass). I got no cream cheese (it's an extra 50 cents...way to up-sell)!!  GEEZ, my breakfast burrito clearly did not need a bagel...why would I go out of my way to order one without cream cheese? Maybe this was my fault for assuming she would understand my need for cream cheese with my bagel, that I ordered, as an added side, which would clearly not taste good with jelly seeing as it was a sun-dried tomato bagel...argh. :o/

Blast my unconventional upbringing (and resulting) odd food combinations like cream with coffee and bagels with cream cheese!

This would have been a perfect opportunity to make some new regulars and make some good up-sells just on the basis of trying all the "great stuff" people rave about. Alas, our waitress was just MEH about the whole thing (that is, when we did see her) and our food was nothing to write home about - but dang it if I don't Yelp about it!

I will say she was quick to bring the check to us...though it was before we had finished ordering...and she was even faster in retrieving it to add more charges for the cream cheese I had to practically sacrifice my neck for.

Call me crazy, but  I'd just rather not drive out of my way to be treated poorly. Based on this experience, NY Coffee Shop makes Einstein Bagels look like a much better option. Total Fail. :o(

Ron Weasley said it best in the Goblet of Fire: "I'm so hungry I could eat a hippogriff..." -- and that is how I felt this morning. Good thing I had breakfast plans set in advance, otherwise I would have needed to go hunt hippogriffs with my bare hands and my breakfast would have likely turned into a lunch or dinner later in the evening.

It is the closest thing to Monk's in the entire city of Houston. Even though it is buried deep in a wall of text shopping center outpost dotting the Meyerland/Bellaire suburbs, when you park in the crazy parking lot and walk inside the brown bricked building you are instantly transported back East into a real corner coffee shop. You know, the kind where you meet your tall (and racist) friend with crazy hair, your balding portly friend with glasses, and Elaine.

The bagel store next door is attached so if you enter the wrong door, just maneuver through the next door on the side, you do not need to go back outside and start over. Once you enter the coffee shop portion of the building you come across the old timey register. You are handed your menus and instructed to go take whatever table or booth you want to claim as your own - although they do not give you a flag to plant to clearly mark it off as your own. And your dog is not allowed inside either, so you are really out of options in how to mark it as your table.

The waitress comes over quickly for the drink order and is willing to answer any sorts of dumb questions you have - like what "home fries" are. They are apparently big discs of potato sort of fried but not really french fries, and you can get them floppy or crispy. And for drinks - of course they have Dr. Brown just like Katz's and Kenny&Ziggy's because no self respecting authentic New York place would not carry this deliciousness in a soda can.

The menu is large, the options are numerous, and everything looks good on all of the tables around you. It is just a matter of choosing what you want to stuff your face with - because believe me, the portions are huge and everything tastes so good you are going to have a hard time putting down your fork until you are a member of the clean plate club (quicktip: but since it is not a Greek business you would violate the social contract by throwing said clean plate and shouting out "OPA")

I went with the pastrami omelet because I am a salty-cured meat gangsta' like that. In addition to the omelet (made with three eggs) you get a bagel. I went with the jalapeno bagel so I could up and down compare it to my favie at Hot Bagel Shop. In addition to the omelet and the bagel you also get your choice of potato, tomato (this one was never explained to me, but my friend and I reached different conclusions on what this likely meant) or a potato pancake. So for $10 you get a huge plate filled with this massive omelet and a ton of potato "home fries" and then a whole other plate with your bagel and a big dollop of cream cheese. Massive.

Omelet: Pastrami is amazing. George Costanza understood this when he tried to introduce it and television into the bedroom. This omelet makes me want to do the same thing. While Katz's and Kenny&Ziggy's attempts at pastrami are certainly good, they have never been this good in my mouth.

Bagel: You can actually taste the jalapeno! It is not spicy, it is still just a hint, but it is definitely there. This is a smaller bagel all around than Hot Bagel Shop - but it is much different as far as texture, flavor, and color. HBS provides you with a much larger bagel size-wise, and it is much thicker. NY instead opts for the smaller, nearly grocery store bagel sized bagel, but packs a lot of flavor in there. Throw some cream cheese down on it to round out the flavor and it is a mighty fine breakfast treat.

    Home fries: They were alright.

The food is all around awesome. Drinks get refilled fairly quickly for such a busy place. And this massive amount of food cost less than $10.

I wish this place was not buried deep in the suburbs, it would be a perfect Downtown/Midtown thing and I would be able to visit a lot more often, like Tacos A Go-Go. But when I have the time on the weekend I will be coming back here for some more pastrami omelet deliciousness.

My review is strictly of the bagels.  We were in a hurry and didn't have time to sit down and have breakfast so we opted for the to-go bagels connected to this place.  We had two bagels one oatmeal raisin and one banana nut with banana nut cream cheese.

The bagels were eh, the cream cheese was so-so.  They do not have a bagel cutter, so you have to cut it yourself.  Overall, they were not very welcoming.  I would suggest people to take the time and actually eat in the diner as the bagels are just average at best.

This is one of Houston's best places for breakfast, and definitely the best for bagels.

This place succeeds where most places fail.  There is a homey atmosphere.  The service is great, they always kept my coffee cup full.

I can tell there is a lot of regulars that go there.  Also you need to get there early because this place can get crowded, but tables open up really fast.

The prices are actually really reasonably, and they seem to have decent specials.  They also give you a good amount of food.  Also they have a great selection of bagels.

After I get done eating, I usually go next door and pick myself up some bagels and muffins.

I couldn't wait to get home to try the bagels, so I went into their restaurant part to get a freshly sliced and toasted pumpernickel bagel with butter.  The place was PACKED so I was able to secure a seat on the counter.

I come here for the breakfast Special.
Two eggs, home fries, bagel and cream cheese. $ 4.25.
The Matzo ball soup is pretty Awesome, too. The place is diner style. Way in the back you can sit at the bar. It's a really clean place. They have specials written on poster boards on the wall and sheets of paper on the door facing the bagel shop.
There is someone there to greet you. They basically just hand you the laminated menu and tell you seat where ever you want.....if its not crowded.
There service is always fast and the food is hot and fresh.
They serve breakfast all day. Sweet!!!!

This is my favorite breakfast spot with my dad! When you step in front door you feel as if you're transported back in time to the early 80's. If you come here before noon on the weekends, be prepared to wait. But let me assure you it is well worth the wait.
There are always new menu additions and specials listed out on large sheets of butcher paper around the restaurant. Every once in a while I'll deviate from my usual breakfast and give one of the new menu items a try. Needless to say, I haven't been disappointed yet! Most of the time I come here for breakfast, but the lunch items aren't bad either. Personally, I think they have the best egg salad in Houston.
If you live within ten miles of New York Coffee Shop, you don't have any excuse to ever go to IHOP of Denny's.

It pains me to give this place 2 stars because I grew up eating their bagels and Challah bread.  In the 28 years that my family has lived in the area, I'd never actually eaten in the restaurant - it was always us bringing bagels and breads home to eat at home.

On Saturday, 5 of us went to eat breakfast there.  My father in law ordered the pastrami sandwich, which he loved.  My mother in law ordered the Greek omelet, which she enjoyed and actually finished (she's a light weight so her finishing something has to mean she liked it!), my husband ordered Nova and eggs but they got his order wrong and whatever salmon they did use, ended up being waaay too salty for him and he couldn't eat it.  He didn't say anything to them.  I split a pastrami omlet with egg whites, with my father.

There wasn't anything bad/wrong with my omelet, but it was definitely nothing to write home about either.  It was your basic omelet and unfortunately I've had better -- waaay better.  They wrote on the menu that their omelet were 3 egg but they must have been extra small eggs because the omelets were on the small side.  I wouldn't have split with my father if I had seen how small they were.  Again, not a complaint, but I've ordered 3 egg omelets at other places and they are much larger and splittable, unlike this one.

Our bagels (that came with our meals), were wonderful as usual.  I had a jalapeno bagel, my mom-in-law had garlic, and my husband had cinnamon raisin.

I will definitely continue to buy my bagels and breads from NY Bagels but I don't think I'll go back to the restaurant part to eat breakfast.  It is not bad at all but there are plenty of better places for that type of cuisine.

Finally tried this place out.  I get to take another place off my "bookmark".  The service was GREAT!  Our waitress was informative, fast and super friendly.

The Mr. had the Pastrami Sandwich.  He said it was just OK.  I had the Nova, Eggs and Onions with a wheat bagel.  I enjoyed my simple breakfast.  My bagel was really good as others stated.

If I lived closer I'd probably visit again.  I love the simplicity of the place.

This place is a hole in the wall, but must be one of the best breakfast and coffee shops I have ever been to. Unimposing entry way located in a small strip center.
My friend Melissa P. and I enjoyed the following delicious goodness:
Vegetable Omlet, Potato Pancake, Everything Bagel, and Waffle
Cornbeef and Hash, Sweet Potato Fries, Pancakes, and Garlic Bagel

We sat at the counter in the back which led to immediate seating. While others were waiting for 20 minutes. We additionally met a nice man by the name of John who runs Johnny's The Rub which we should try out next.

This is the perfect spot to go if you're feeling nostalgic for NYC. It's tiny and constantly crowded, but it's always worth the drive an the wait. It's a great diner, and I really wish it were open 24/7! Everything is extremely tasty and inexpensive. Seriously, this place just makes me happy, but I just like places with a little bit of attitude and charm.
The best part of any trip here is definitely the bagels made next door. These are the best bagels in the Houston area by far. I always end up buying a few after I'm done eating for later.
Now that I'm writing this review I have to go there tomorrow. I need my bagel fix!

This place is a virtual bagel nirvana in Houston.  It's been open for eons and serves what are arguably the best bagels in Houston.  Forget the chain bagel shops like Einsteins.  NY Coffee Shop leaves them in the dust with quality, texture and taste.  Half of the site is a take out shop and the other half is a small restaurant.  Prices over the years have gently escalated, but the product is worth it.  Go early in the morning, when the bagels are their freshest.  If you live in the Braeswood/Meyerland area, carrying a sack of warm bagels home or to your office will make you a hero.  NY Coffee Shop offers a wide variety of bagels, including the so-called "original bagel," the bialy.

"It smells delicious and they give you extra napkins right away!" - Mom

Not only that but it's clean too! Looking on the walls you see the blue ribbon award all over saying kitchen cleanliness since 1983! Crazy!

My dad lived in NJ and New York growing up and he talked about the memories these babies brought up. I was in New York last month and being back here I was a bit depressed because I thought there were no places to eat like NY. This place has solved my problem and has fixed my food depression.

This place is packed, busy, crowded and a little loud. It couldn't be a better atmosphere! It goes perfectly with the idea of a New York place to eat and leaving my family and friends could not resist the temptation of buying a dozen bagels to last a few days.  I thought that it was nice of them to give us freezer bags for free when we bought the bagels even though I don't think they will be needed.

At the end of the day, everyone who went to that place is still thinking about how awesome our breakfast was and that it started our day off perfectly.

I'll have to join the chorus on raving about this place.  The NY Coffee Shop just oozes Jewish authenticity (think Mike Myers' character, Linda Richman, when you say the name) with the bagel shop next door and the warmth of the brothers who own the place.  They've been going strong for 33 years (I noticed the gubernatorial declaration plaque on the wall this morning) and I wish them another 33 years of success.

Got turned on to the place by my ex since he lives in the neighborhood.  Even though we've split up, I still make a trek here on weekdays when I'm off as a treat to myself.  The place is simply decorated - think of a throwback to the 1980s.  Lisa A's review of the decor style is spot on.  The waitstaff tends to know all of the old timers and Ed (one of the brothers) stops by regular patrons to say hello and shoot the breeze.

I usually stick with the daily special (served Mon-Fri):  2 eggs any style, hash browns or cottage fries, and choice of bagel for $4.35.  All of the bagels are freshly made at their sister store literally next door.  They do a brisk business on locals who stop in to pick some up by the bag.  I supplement my special with a side of sausage patties (links are available) for another $1.15.  Paired up with a cup of coffee ($1.50, unlimited refills), this meal keeps me going until about 4 PM with the quantity of food.

My ex , Blond Ambition, loves their sandwiches and sharing the place with cute little old ladies (oops, sorry - I mean "mature" ladies) who lunch with their friends.

They are open 7 days a week starting at 6 AM.  Close around 3 PM, if memory serves.  Closed on all Jewish holidays so watch your calendar.  Weekends can be standing room only.  If you go, go no later than 9 AM to avoid a wait.  Waits can be about 20 minutes.  Weekdays are good if you can swing it - as an early bird, I often show up at 730 AM and you have the pick of tables.  Local retirees start to flock in around 845 AM to fill up the place and its fun to see how all of them just click with one another.

To channel Linda Richman again,  "Go, its like buttah."

This was a bit of a culture clash for me. A seemingly genuine, Jewish, New York coffee shop (what we in Jersey would have called a diner) complete with fresh bagels and potato pancakes, rubbing elbows with grits, bacon and biscuits. For this north eastern boy, it was an entertaining combination, if nothing else.

The portions were just perfect. I ordered the "salami western" omelet which came with a bagel (or toast) and the aforementioned latka (or grits, home fries or biscuits). I was afraid it would be way too much food. It wasn't. Nor did I leave hungry.

The omelet was fluffy, jammed full of peppers, onions, cheese and meat, and not at all runny or watery.

    The latka was expert.

The bagels are the perfect balance of chewy and dense versus airy and flaky. I swiped a knife load of my wife's schmear of veggie cream cheese, and the veggies were bright and fresh.

This place is around the corner from St. Thomas More and we went directly after 9am mass. The place was a zoo full of people, but tables turned over amazingly quickly. It was worth a few minutes wait.

We got a few bagels to-go from the connected shop next door.

Make the trip if it isn't as close to you as it is to us. These may be the best bagels for hundreds of miles in any direction.

It's a hole in the wall in a neighborhood that isn't as nice as it used to be... but it's totally worth making the trip for breakfast.  The pastrami omelet is my favorite, but honestly I haven't had a bad meal here.

There is no decor to speak of - it's a small place with 80's era pink formica everywhere - but the people watching is fabulous.  Everyone eats here, from the little old Jewish grandmothers to the hung over party girls with tramp stamps in their yoga pants to young families toting strollers and car seats.  The owners can be a little gruff at times (hey, it is the New York Coffee Shop) but the one time they messed up an order, we were given a bag with a dozen fresh bagels and a sincere apology - above and beyond what was needed.

Go early on a weekday and you'll be the only person in the restaurant.  Weekend mornings the line will be out the door.  It's worth the wait.

Okay, five stars for what it is! I'm a native Philaldelphian, and these folks had a bagel shop in Philly (the father of the owner had one in Brooklyn, I gather). These are some REALLY good bagels. I just moved here from Chicago, and if someone had told me a week ago that I could get better bagels in Houston than Chicago, I may have been a bit dubious.

That said... there's the bagel shop on the right and the diner on the left. The bagels were warm when we bought them. I haven't had a warm bagel in 12 years, since I worked for a bagel shop (coincidentally named NY Bagels)

We ate in the diner because my husband was in the mood for an omelette, and it came with a latke and a bagel. Nice! I got an evertthing bagel with cream cheese and an applesauce. The iced coffee was pretty decent, and the small orange juice was actually small. On Sunday at 11, this place was mobbed with regulars.

I took some extra bagels to go... and expect them to be amazing. (We got pumpernickel, chocolate, onion, everything, and poppy seed).

Try the Dr Brown's black cherry soda in the cooler of the bagel shop- I haven't seen that stuff since eating in the Philadelphia bagel shops where everyone stocks it, and it's one of the best sodas I've ever had.

p.s. Does every strip mall in Houston have a Washeteria in it?

It was a little bit like being back home, where there is a restaurant that once was like a carbon-copy of this place.   All of our group had breakfasty food.  Lox and bagels, with capers and cream cheese of course, were enjoyed.  I liked my simple mushroom omelet, which came with a latke and a bagel (they had pumpernickel, thankfully!).  Dr. Browns to drink.  And, the piece-de-resistance: they brought me out a cinnamon muffin with a birthday candle (it was my birthday :-)), and a group of 4-5 staff members came to the table and SANG a nice, hearty version of Happy Birthday.  Totally made my day.  I love NY.

This is the real deal. I've been doing some research for a genuine bagel and an authentic Jewish deli and my research paid off. It's possible with the 80's mauve and teal wallpaper, chairs, and tables that this place could be confused for a hospital or nursing home cafeteria but only until you see the menu.

For breakfast they've got the usual home-fries, pancakes, waffles and steak and eggs but they also serve salami, corned beef or pastrami omelets, bagels with lox or nova, matzo brie, fish boxes, corned beef hash and list goes on and on! Or, if you prefer lunch, how about a hot reuben, kosher style knockwurst with hot sauerkraut, matzo ball soup, gefilte fish, potato pancakes, chopped liver and onion sandwich, or pickled or creamed herring?

We ordered a veggie (everything) bagel sandwich, a pastrami sandwich (both complete with a pickle spear and a small serving of coleslaw) and two sodas and it only set us back $13. You can't beat that with a stick. Plus, the service was very great and there's a general welcoming feel to this place that makes it a great destination for a relaxed Saturday morning breakfast.

The bagels and pastries come from their kosher bakery next door so you can conveniently pick up bagels or challah to take away. It's probably a good thing I don't live close by or I'd revert to my old bagel and cream cheese addiction. Regardless, I'm glad I know how to find my way to the New York Coffee Shop and Bagelry.

Been eating here since I was kid. Let's call it 20 years for sake of rounding. Standard breakfast fare, but everything is done well.

Super friendly staff and the best bagels!

    Love it!

This place is why I love living in the Meyerland/Bellaire part of town!  I love the bagel shop attached to the restaurant.  And the restaurant was great.  It's just like NYC.  Food was great, coffee was great and service was good too.  If you like NYC you'll like this place.  If you don't like NYC, then you probably won't like it.  Can be crowded, but it's just a good restaurant.

I have been going to the New York Coffee Shop, better known as the 'Bagel Shop', since I was a little girl at my Jewish elementary school right around the block.

They have the best bagels by far and they are never a let down. The waitresses have been working there for years which gives them a chance to really get to know you. It is extremely cheap and the portions are perfect.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves bagels. Even if you dont like bagels, their breakfast menu is awesome and has all sorts of stuff! If you go on a Saturday, just be prepared to wait a while...its always packed.

The bagels are the best I've ever had, and the greasy spoon breakfasts and bottomless coffee are comfort foods of the highest order. The fact that it's mere blocks away...well, makes it an easy choice when it comes to my weekend morning meals.

UPDATE: Make sure you order your homefries crispy.

First off, I am the son of a deli owner in NY that has been there for over 70 years (Fox's Deli in Rochester, NY).  That said, I really enjoyed the NY Coffee Shop.  I had eggs and nova and it had a lot of nova and the eggs were cook very well.  The coffee was good as well.  Now to the bagels, we are not in NY, so the water is different, hence, so are the bagels.  For a Texas made bagel, it is good.  The wait staff was friendly and accommodating.  The atmosphere is like my families restaurant in NY, deli feel all the way.  My kids loved the pastries and baked goods.  I will be going back when in the area.

Standard Ashkenazi-style Jewish cuisine (gefilte fish, bagels, matzo ball soup etc), you probably won't find a better Jewish deli in Texas.  Although I'm not sure if the Coffee Shop & Deli is kosher, the adjoining bakery, New York Bagels Bakery, *IS* certified Kosher.

For New York and New Jersey transplants, and those who miss their mother's chicken liver salad, New York Coffee Shop is the place.

Make sure you order a bagel (made fresh next door) and when you finish eating, head next door to the bakery and buy yourself a dozen of the BEST (and Kosher) bagels in Texas!!

I love this place. Friendly, fast service. Delicious, affordable food. Fresh, flavorful bagels. What more could you ask? My favorite dish: 2 eggs over medium, cinnamon raisin bagel (butter only), with home fries (extra crispy), all for under $5! I never get close to finishing all this food.

You might have to wait if you come on a Sat/Sun morning with a group, but when it's just me and my husband, we've never had to wait more than 5 mins. It can be crowded on the weekend mornings, but I think it's worth it.

Mah, it is what it is, nothing special, but if you are in the area, it is fine for breakfast.  Cheap and average breakfast eats.  My main problem is that the bagels served are inferior to the brilliant ones next door, and they are the same bagels, just not hot and fresh.  That really bothers me.

The lunch is just ass thrilling, as in, not that much.  Blah corned beef, blah matzo ball soup, blah blah blah......

Trying to think of things to write, I am thinking of more things that bother me than things I like, so I will stop about now.

These bagels are awesome!  I visit my parents in NJ at least twice a year and have hunted down what I consider to be the best bagels in NYC over the last couple of years.  These bagels are so close.  The outer crust is just chewy enough and the insides are always so warm and delicious.  As good as it gets.  I'm glad I found this place.  I just moved to Houston too, so what a relief to find bagels like this here.  Where I lived before we weren't so fortunate.

I can't talk about the diner side, cause we got scared away at 2 pm when people were still waiting outside to eat.  We just grabbed some bagels and fled off to home to gorge ourselves.

I love this place!!! It's a bit of a drive for me, but it always seems to come to mind when picking a Sunday brunch spot. Let me tell you - I'm not alone, this place is always packed! But even if you show up during a rush, the tables open up fairly quickly. They have very reasonable prices & you get a lot of food for your money. I am rarely able to shy away from the breakfast special, which comes with two eggs, a bagel & home fries. The bagels are fresh & delicious, and the home fries (get them extra crispy) are amazing!! The place is homey and the owners are almost always around - great people! If you are looking for a great bagel, nothing compares - trust me! I've found myself wishing I was at the "bagel shop" (as it's fondly called) several times as I try to get through a hard, overpriced bagel elsewhere.
