Make sure you have a few hours to spare here, there's even a sign that says something to the effect: don't be a jerk 'cause good food takes time. Does the sign ever tell the truth though. I had a delicious(!!!) prosciutto and grilled apple eggs benny from their long list of choices. Kept hydrated/caffeinated with the specialty coffees which were also awesome, but would maybe recommend just their straight espresso 'cause the milk in their other choices gets cloying.
Their claim is that they use local eggs but don't specify where from and I forgot to ask, so that would be worth some investigation for future trips. -

If I weren't on this newfangled low carb thing, this would definitely be my new favourite place for breakfast!
It's just a bit out of the way, housed in the same small building as the infamous Steel Wheels. There's plenty of street parking nearby, which is handy. As soon as you walk in, you kind of forget that you're in Edmonton. Whether you're sitting next to the old piano, looking out onto the kitschy patio or hanging out near the kitchen, there's always something to look at in this quirky cafe. It's almost trying a little too hard, but it's sure got personality.
I used to love bagels. I swear, in university I was having one almost every day from Java Jive at one point, but then I figured out that the freshman fifteen ain't necessarily a myth, y'know? I do wish that you could order a meal from NYBC that didn't include a bagel, but I guess that's the point of the whole place.
My "Classic Breakfast" included eggs, hashbrowns, and a bagel. I was surprised at the limited choices for bagels, actually, although I didn't even really want one. I also don't understand why you can't order two eggs scrambled; you have to order four if you want them done that way. What's up with that?
My other beef: my plate came with fruit, even though fruit wasn't listed as being included in the meal on the menu. Why is this an issue? I have a pretty severe allergy to kiwi fruit, and sure enough, a slice showed up on my plate. If I had known the order came with fruit, I would have made a special request.
Definitely a great place for carbs (y'know, if you're into that sort of thing) and it was a fun Galentine's Day date with my friend Jackie, but I'm not itching to return. -

It's important to arrive at the New York Bagel Cafe thinking of it as a place to enjoy a special occasion brunch, rather than as place to get a quick bite to eat. The establishment is quirky, but cozy - the interior reminds me of an English Inn. Service is leisurely - don't expect to rush in and out. The food and the experience is meant to be savoured.
All standard coffees are served with a side of steamed milk. The standard coffee is pricier than that at Route 99 Diner or equivalents, but of a higher quality. As I considered my brunch here a special occasion brunch, I went for a Caffe Borgia, which included chocolate, whipped cream, steamed milk, and an orange peel. Delicious.
Because I'm not going to pay a premium price for something that I can get just anywhere, such as an omelette, I splurged on a $19 special Eggs Benedict with smoked duck and pickled pear. The flavors of the duck and the pear worked well together, and also worked well with the Cafe's homemade hollandaise. While our server recommended against ordering a Benedict on a Pumpernickel bagel, I did so anyway. And everything was well executed, delicious, and beautifully presented.
The New York Bagel Cafe served a fruit salad along with the benedict. While they try to serve as much local and organic food as possible, it appears that they went for fruit as non-local as they could get for our January brunch. But that's fine, as I love dragonfruit!
If you're looking for a gourmet, special occasion brunch without any fuss.
A couple of caveats:
1) During busy hours, every person at your table must order an entree - you can't just go to the cafe and have a cup of coffee.
2) You can't just order a bagel a-la-carte or by the dozen, -

My boyfriend and I decided to try this place after passing it a million times while puttering about in the Strathcona area. When you first come in, you might be a little put off. The place is quite small, meaning you are pretty much guaranteed to have to wait for a table. It also smells kinda funny.
That didn't matter once we sat down, as the service was excellent and the food was delicious. You get a LOT for the price. The ingredients are quality. They have an extensive list of cream cheeses, catering to almost any preferences you can think of. I chose the sour dill, which was delicious. Fresh dill, not dried, made the cheese that much better! I got some hash browns on the side, a favorite of mine, and they were spectacular. The perfect amount of spices!! Also, what I found cool was each table had a massive selection of condiments, jams, jellies, honey, what have you so you didn't need to ask for anything you might want!

Best. Coffee. Ever.
Seriously, the house coffee is amazing here. Most other coffee places I can feel my body saying "You've reached your limit for the day", but here I just don't get that. And really that's just where the amazingness of NYB starts.
The lox benedict and proscutto benedict are amongst the best in town. Respectable propotions, exotic fruits to start (dragonfruit!?), and skillfully cooked potatoes and in house hollandaise are just a few of the things that make the food here amazing.
You will have to wait a while to sit if it's busy, and you will have to wait a while to get your food. They have a sign in the restaurant that sums it up, "Good food takes time, so please be patient." And they deliver to that promise. So be patient, cause it's worth it. You can skim through the collection of unusual books they keep around the windows if you really need stimulation. -

In science fiction movies the theory of a parallel universe is sometimes used as a part of a storyline. Well I found this theory to be true when it comes to a couple of restaurants in our city.
Colonel Mustards on the northside of town has a twin on the southside, that being the New York Bagel Cafe(NYBC).
Both restaurants are beautifully decorated, NYBC even more so as their outdoor seating area has lovely plants hanging all over.
The staff in both places are friendly and efficient and they are both located in trendy parts of town.
But the big downside is that both restaurants simply don't deliver when it comes to food.
Today I tried the NYBC for the first(and last) time today. I read about the highly touted bagel platters everyone raved about on Yelp, so I ordered the cream cheese and lox platter for $18. A small glass of apple juice cost me $3.25.
What I received was appalling.
ONE, count'em ONE small, semi-stale multi grain bagel. I've had better from Safeway straight out of the bag for pete's sake. A few strips of lox(fish) which were tasty but again small. A dollop of cream cheese, a few spoons of potato salad, a slice of lemon, a slice of tomato, a duff of alfalfa spouts and half a dill pickle. Not a full dill pickle mind you, because that would be way too expensive, but one cut in half.
With the tip everything cost me $28. What a disappointment.
I don't know what planet some of these Yelpers are on who claim the portions at NYBC are "big" and "satisfying" and "respectable" because that is a load of crap. Total BS.
When I left the restaurant to get to my car in the Old Strathcona neighbourhood, I passed a kid who was selling lemonade from a homemade lemonade stand. He was charging $1 for a huge glass or juice.
I hope one day that kid grows up and opens a restaurant right next door to the NYBC. He'll put'em out of business in no time because that little 4 year boy knows how to give customers their moneys worth. Something that the New York Bagel Cafe doesn't do. -

The most rude service I've ever received in a restaurant was this place on a Saturday. We didn't wait too long, but me and my friend were seated at a little table for 4 and proceeded to order. After getting our drinks, I imagine our surprise when 2 more menus get slapped on our table and the OWNER asks us to move over because they're sitting 2 more people at our table. Ummmmmm. No thanks. We'd like some privacy. We told her nobody made us aware of this "policy" and we'd appreciate not having other people seated at our small 4-top. She said "you can always go somewhere else"! So we did. Left our drinks on the table and walked out - went to Urban Diner and had another great brunch there. New York Bagel cafe - you suck. Hard. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere where your patronage will be appreciated.

I had lunch here today with my husband, daughter and 87 year old aunt. She hates every place I take her. However, she did NOT hate NYBC.:)
She is a two cup a day drinker of "Nabob", so I had to convince her to go above her daily limit and try the house coffee. I just knew she would love it. She only agreed because I was so enthusiastic about it. Big hit!!
I also suggested she have the "Classic breakfast" as I was having and she replied....."It's noon! I've already had two breakfasts since 5:30 this morning...." After some gentle persuasion from the patient staff, Auntie agreed to breakfast. We waited quite a while for our plates, but we did not mind. I would not suggest this to anyone as a fast food joint. There is always too much food and we were offered take away boxes for our leftovers. The atmosphere is pleasant and you gotta love free parking.
My auntie gave it a thumbs up AND paid the bill. Awesome! -

A small cafe featuring local products and a lot of choices. New York Bagle Cafe is not just about bagels. There are a lot of breakfast/brunch items to choose from, such as omelettes (with some unusual filling choices), eggs benedict, and French toast. The selection of bagels (both the kinds of bagels and the toppings) rivals any fast-food bagel shop with the choices. All bagels come with a side of potato salad which I did not have a chance to try, but I have heard is fabulous. There are also a few light entrees like vegetarian chili and veggie burgers.
I opted for one of the breakfast items which was two eggs, home fries, a toasted bagel, and a choice of turkey, bacon, or ham. My scrambled eggs were extremely fluffy without being under-done. Turkey was a unique meat option, the the thinly-sliced smoked turkey breast went well with the eggs. As for the home fries? Wow - crispy and delicious. A side of fruit was a nice touch also. At $13 it was also a good value.
Most of the items here run from $12-$16, so it is reasonable when you take into account this is an independent cafe that strives to make excellent food. Oh, I haven't talked about the coffee yet. I had a house coffee which was a bit expensive at over $3 but was strong, rich espresso with a side of steamed milk. I poured it all in an voila, I had myself a latte.
The service was wonderful and I love the artsy, homey atmosphere. I want to come back here soon. -

Quaint little restaurant on Gateway just a block or two away from the Strathcona farmers' market, the New York Bagel Cafe has the perfect match of ambience and fine food. Among the various bagel-based breakfast, brunch and late lunch options, I would swear by the eggs "Bennedict" choices. I've had an omelette once and enjoyed it thoroughly. The coffee with steamed milk is an option that I see in very few cafes and though it's a little expensive for coffee ($3+), it's just terrific out here. I don't know what's there in that coffee they serve - i'm always left wanting for seconds. They also have a fine collection of teas and espresso based coffee drinks.
The ambience is very relaxing. Soft, slow music playing in the background; antique musical instruments, clocks, telephones, books etc. along the perimeter of the room. You can easily spend two hours at this place (provided it's not too crowded!). The tables and chairs are simple; an elegant dark wood with a very relaxing feel.
Just a comment on the bagel platters. I wasn't particularly enamored by it. It's about $15 a platter and even though it fills you up - thanks to the potato salad, it sure feels like you just had a bagel, at the end of it all.

The New York Bagel Cafe is entirely understated from the outside. In fact, you can't be really prepared for the warm, cozy atmosphere that greets you, beckoning you to take off your coat and hat and stay awhile. Everything's in solid, dark wood, with soft lighting mixed with ample window illumination. The window sills are lined with antique items and a library of books, from which I picked up the odd title "Oral Sadism and the Vegetarian Personality" and had a few laughs at the ironic tongue-in-cheek psycho-babble written by shrinks about shrinking. I ordered the locks and cream cheese on a toasted poppy seed bagel.
The salmon was so fresh it practically melted in my mouth. It came with the best potato salad I've ever tasted and I ordered a cafe au lait to wash it down. The menu has a wide variety of bagel toppings including James Bond's favourite with beluga cavier for $95, and eggs benny with toppings including truffles and fois gras and other eccentric delights. It's a bit pricey by very high quality.
Jazz was playing and the cafe had a lazy Saturday afternoon feel which defied going back out into the cold December wind. So I stayed a while, reading and sipping coffee from a glass mug eating poppy seeds off of my empty plate, perfectly content not being in New York, but celebrating the New York spirit.Listed in: Top Restaurants

I had forgotten how much I loved this place. It's tastefully dark and comfortable. The coffee is great, the food is lovely. The prices seem a little high, but once you see the artful and plentiful portions, you'll feel just fine about them. The service has always been nice, and the speed food comes is the perfect balance between quick, and 'but I'm here to have a conversation/read/hang out'.

Came here for a late lunch with old friends after hanging out at Strath market. Convenient location on Gateway, one block from the market.
Small cafe with darker wood decor and a warm atmosphere. Lunch menu consisted of a variety of bagels with spreads/toppings, small side of potato salad and tomatos, cucumbers and sprouts. Variety of juices and coffees available which were on the pricey side. Bagels were quite reasonable.
Food was fine but nothing to write home about... only to write on yelp about anyway ;) Service was limited - our water never got refilled in the 1.5 hours we were there and no one checked in during the meal. Casual, relaxed atmosphere was nice. -

New York Bagel is a good experience and provides you with a cozy atmosphere. The food is arranged very nicely and the bar is well stocked.
The eggs benedict is delicious and each bite is better than the last. It is a great way to start off your day. They serve fruit with the meal as well which is delicious and adds some excitement to your meal. It is pricier than most other places but not completely outrageous.
If you want breakfast get here early otherwise you will have to wait in a line. -

Always amuses me when a restaurant is named after another city especially when it also includes a notorious food item too. I love NY bagels but I can't say I was amazed with the bagels from here. I'm leaning more towards a 2.5 out of 5 but gave it a 3 since the ambiance was really nice and cozy.
I was looking forward to the highly rated eggs Benedict but was sorely disappointed. My eggs benny were cool...that's not good cause who wants to eat cold eggs? The plating was nice and there were lots of fresh fruit. The challa French toast was okay but nothing amazing.
The service was pretty slow...it took a long time to be seated (even though there were free tables), long time for the server to come back to us and take our orders. -

I love this place. They really care about their food. The presentation is always great, with beautiful fruit on the side. The Eggs Benedict are always good and come with really nice home fries. I recently had the challa french toast, which is covered with the most divine berry compote. So wonderful. And the coffee is the best in town. A house coffee is an espresso with a side of steamed milk and foam, so its essentially a do-it-yourself latte. I really like the espresso, topped with a bit of foam. The jars of jam, mustard (some polish, some spicy, etc.), and white and brown sugars on the table allow you to customize your meal. And to top it off the waitresses are wonderfully nice and friendly and make you want to come back everyday. As a warning, Saturday mornings are busy because of the proximity to the farmer's market, you may have to wait and the line doesn't move very fast. But its worth it. At least come back during the week when its not so busy and you can enjoy it to its fullest. Maybe sit on the beautiful flowered patio during the summer.
