Alaskan Crab $10.99/lb! Weighed in a 8 lbs-- gotta love it when they bring out to show you, poor crab lol

But that can be misleading--when you request the different ways of making it, they 'nickel and dime' a $5 or $10 service charge, apparently it's normal.

So the extra's: $18 for the 'brain sauce' of the lobster, mixed in w/ a few veggies for a creamy sauce over regular rice....since i'm not a big rice person, and yes, i'm  chinese but banana, wasn't worth it but parents enjoyed it.

Deep fried: another $10.  not as spicy as I would like it, but still good.

    Then ordered some extras:

Bean curd or 'dow mew' veggies, good!

Beijing pork chop: yummy; more cooked onions would've been better, a bit sweeter as i prefer some sourness in the sauce but recommend.

complimentary red bean dessert soup & almond cookies plus 4 sesame mini-balls, red bean...

    nice touch ;)

I'm really not a fan of shark fin soup. That being said, I've never seen shark fin soup served as big as this place. It was a slab of fin and I felt disgusted that shark fin is still being served.

Everything else was alright in terms of a party set meal but I have to give a bad rating for any place that serves shark fin.

    PROS:
    + Quality Dim Sum

    CONS:
    - Can get crowded

Being in Richmond it feels like I am back in Hong Kong. Its really amazing that it feels just like HK, there are so many Cantonese speakers here that you don't even need to speak english, weird. Here are my thoughts:

Shark fin soup was okay, but lacked the wow factor.

Abalone is nice and had good flavor. It was a pretty good sized abalone too.

Siu Mai is quite large and has a good texture and flavor.

Shrimp fun rolls are good, but a bit on the thicker size.

    Char siu puffs were good.

Overall, this is a good dim sum place that is clean. Very close to the level that you might find in Hong Kong.

I came here because I was hungry while waiting for my car service to be ready, and it was a mistake: The manager had an attitude, it wasn't busy at all yet he purposely "ignored" me when I called him. I asked for help with the chinese menu and before I finished my sentence, he put the english menu on the table and left in so much rush. Is this the kind of standard I expect in Richmond?? The food tasted mediocre (except the pork "siu mai", the fattiest I've ever tasted) yet quite pricey.

I love traditional Chinese food, and Neptune never disappoints. They are my comfort food Chinese restaurant in Richmond because over the years they held their consistency. What they excel in is their Congee, Noodle and Rice. They are also good at dinner combos, which you can pick between 2,4,6,8 dishes within a set menu, and it comes with soup and rice.

The first thing we ordered was Squid Balls in Fish Broth . I am not sure if they include this on the menu but it's definitely recommended. Clean fish broth with tasty squid balls. To be honest, I only order this so I can taste the soup.

Spicy Shrimp: Shrimp marinated in a spicy sauce, and then chilled to serve. This is the perfect appetizer to an Asian beer.

Free Range Chicken: its leaner and taster than traditional chicken IMO. Comes with ginger / green onion and sweet and sour dip. I recommend scooping the ginger /green onion sauce in your rice.

Braised Cod Fillet with Celery / Beancurd. This is part of their new value menu. As expected, you will not get large servings when it's $7.99.

Spicy Stir-Fried Green Beans: This is quite a tasty veggie dish. Thai chilli peppers with minced beef.

I wish I can feature more dishes from the menu of this restaurant, but I was too full to do so. Just do me a favor and look at what other people are eating before ordering. You cannot expect the sweet and sour pork to be good when it's a traditional Chinese eatery.

We ordered mix of dim sum and regular menu items-chive shrimp pancake, fried rice, soup, etc.  Everything we ordered looked nice on the table but not so much on our tongues.  I was not a fan of their use of thick gravy sauce.  They were a little bit sweet but tasteless for the most part, and made any dishes that came with it warm and mushy like some kind of weird microwaved Chinese baby food.  We saw so many shark fin soup on the menu, so we decided to try the Buddha's feast shark fin soup.  The soup had a lot of healthy ingredients but again, the soup was so thick, I've had much easier time swallowing Pepto Bismol.  We were bit disappointed because the restaurant looked really nice on the inside, but the food was not up to par with what we hoped for.

I had dinner here last night and some things remain the same.

The jellyfish was still delicious and well seasoned.
The crab claw balls were still fantastic and perfectly deep fried to a golden color.
The Yee Mein were a little oily and tasteless as I remembered.

The only thing that has changed was the service. It's actually gotten worse! The servers were mute. Every time someone from out table asked for anything, we didn't get any response, acknowledgement, even eye contact. They would eventually bring our glass, napkins or whatever we were asking, but this was just rude. I guess they just don't talk to customers because I saw them chit chatting up a storm in the corner with each other.  Oh and by the way, the glass they eventually gave me was dirty.  There were oily lipstick stains on the rim.  Gross...

First, I just want to ask... where's the dim sum places that push the food around in carts??? I'm soo use to that, especially since I don't know how to read Chinese and don't necessarily know what the English name each dish is...

Anyway, you order your food and they bring it out to you.. slowly. We ordered about 8 things for 4 people.. which turned out to be a decent amount.. but I'm not sure if that's because we only got one dish at a time.. and filled up on tea... or if it really did fill us up...

Well, the dim sum itself wasn't bad... (I couldn't find their sesame balls on their menu to order! :( that's my fav!--assuming they make it they way I like it)... We ordered the traditional stuff, chicken feet, shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, etc..

We opted for this place mostly because it was the busiest in the area... we had to wait about 30 minutes... so we took a stroll around and saw at least two other places... but they were definitely less busy and one even offered a discount on dim sum!

Overall, I think we had a decent dim sum experience... just wish the food came out faster... and that they pushed carts so we can see what we're getting! (is that just a bay area thing?)

Oh, you also have to request soy sauce and chili (although.. the chili tasted really weird.......)

Fabulous food.  If you don't mind being treated like a 3rd class citizen in a restaurant that obviously only wants you if you're Asian, if you don't mind mis-information and being ignored because you speak English, and if you relish a place where it was obviously a problem that we didn't speak any dialect of Chinese fluently, then this is the place for you.

For me?  I prefer a place that doesn't judge me on my skin colour

I like it way better before they took the good thing out of the menu. Is been almost 2 years now since they changed the menu? The only thing I absolutely love is their Lobster and Scallops sticky rice. Before they had a cheap soup dumpling that is call buddha delight, but not no more. :(

Service.. haha I dont think that word exist here.

I have eaten at Chinese restaurants all over the world.  I live in Chinatown Seattle.  Food quality here is very low, I'm talking bottom of the dumpster low.  The cooks use way too much starch to thicken every dish, it is very obvious and amateur.  Nothing is fresh here.  This was my experience eating Chinese in Vancouver, and these guys should be ashamed of themselves.

I'm always on the hunt for dim sum restaurants, and I especially love cheap food. So when I saw this place last week, I had to stop in and ask about their lunches.

Tip One: If you order your dim sum before 11am, it's 20% off (from previous reviews, it used to be $2.50, but not anymore). Note that most of the dim sum is otherwise kind of pricy.

One week later, we decided on a whim to go check it out. We got the just after 10am, and waited 10 minutes for a table.

Tip Two: Call to reserve ahead of time if you can. It'll definitely minimize your wait, and if you're trying to get in before the cut off time, they'll let you know whether you'll make it or not.

We sat down, and began ordering away. A good thing about the restaurant is that the food is paper ordered - a good indication that your food is always fresh and hasn't been circulating on a cart all morning. The downside: the order sheet is in Chinese.

Tip Three: they have an order book of all their dim sum with English translations. Added bonus: the translations are fairly accurate and don't have bad Chingrish.

Our order: lobster dumplings ($$), golden creamy custard buns ($), enoki prawn rice roll ($), shrimp spring roll ($), whole abalone/chicken bun ($), deep fried squid tentacles ($$), shredded chicken with jelly fish ($$).  Our bill for 2 people came out to under $45, but we only ate a third of our dishes, and brought the rest home.

Tip Four: don't get the prawn rice roll. It was flavourless, and there weren't any mushrooms in there at all. If you're okay with the pricier items, the lobster dumplings and the shredded chicken with jelly fish were both great orders (but at least $5 each).

I like this place a lot, and wouldn't mind coming back here for some more dim sum. Til then, if anyone knows of any other places that have cheap dim sum, let me know!!

The first dish I liked. Annie, a cutie who would come to seat you when a table was available.

The dim sum was fine. not the best for me on this day.
There was a signature dish that I really did enjoy:  Shrimp Springrolls.
The deepfried squid was tasty too but the rest of the food didn't smile back to me like Annie did.
My Har Gow had shrimp skin on a few of the tail bits that were in it.
My baby curried octopus had one piece with the little beak still attached that made it crunchy.  I put that little bit on the plate.

Other than that, this place is really busy.
And if not for Annie, I probably wouldn't have come back.

So next time it will have to be King Crab.

It's with great trepidation that I write this review.

You see, today, I was talking to Jeremy S., the founder of Yelp, (we "talk" via compliments only) and I noticed he had written a review of Whistler/Blackcombe, the awesome skiing area (and future Winter Olympics 2010 site).  I had no idea that Yelp was live in Canada, but it now is and he told me to Yelp away!

While I love to Yelp, I knew that one day, my knowledge of my favorite eats would conflict with my desire to keep these places secret.  After all, I've seen Yelpers at Elite events!  You're a ravenous bunch with absolutely no fear of long lines out the door!  My favorite Canadian restaurants have, til now, been quiet places shared amongst friends and family and kept on a hidden Excel spreadsheet many years pre-Yelp.

    *sigh*

I absolutely love Canada and especially the greater Vancouver area.  The people are friendly, they speak English, the dollar used to be strong, the seafood is second to none, and they use the same voltage plugs that we do.  But more than anything, Vancouver is the Chinese mecca of food in the Western Hemisphere.

In 1997, when China completed plans to take over Hong Kong, some of the best and the brightest chefs and cooks left Hong Kong and settled in Vancouver.  Many wealthy Hong Kong Chinese did the same, fearful of changes with the Communist government.  When they saw that little changed financially, they simply took their first class tickets and returned.  The chefs, waiters, cooks, etc. weren't blessed with such mobility and many settled in Vancouver and the Chinese restaurant industry exploded in Vancouver and neighboring areas like Richmond.

Neptune Restaurant is one such restaurant.  Consisting of two restaurants in one, Neptune is actually a high-end Seafood/Shark Fin and a casual Wonton Noodle restaurant next to each other.

After every flight or drive into Vancouver, Neptune Wonton Noodle restaurant is where we stop every time.  Their casual Hong Kong fare includes beef noodle soup, wonton noodle soup, and porridges.  The fare is true comfort food for my parents and the closest they can get to Hong Kong (Hong Kong Saigon is the closest in the Bay Area).

The absolute stand out dishes at Neptune though are two: the cold sesame and chili oil infused shrimp and the snake soup.

The cold shrimp has an unbelievable taste that is like crack.  Once you start, it's impossible to stop eating them.  Incredibly fresh, savory, and spicy, I haven't seen this dish anywhere else.

The snake soup is another wonderful item that includes gorgeous pieces of snake and a broth that is always piping hot.  It's a seasonal item (winter) and brings me back to eating snake soup when visiting the streets of Hong Kong as a child.

Overall, a stellar 5 stars.  The real kicker?  It's super affordable and all fare comes out within 10 minutes!

Vancouver and Canada, welcome to Yelp.  I'm glad to see you here as you're a true foodie town.  I may write about pho, wax about ramen, and savor eating sushi, but Chinese food is my true and original passion.  In Vancouver, you shine.

NOTE: Neptune Sharkfin Seafood Restaurant is different from my posted review below for their sister restaurant, Neptune Wonton Noodle. They have different Suite numbers. However, someone at Yelp was smart enough to delete that restaurant as well as my review and then repost my review right here in this restaurant page which doesn't make sense. Nice move, Yelp.

Neptune is divided into two restaurants situated side by side in a large compound along Ackroyd and No. 3 Road. Neptune Seafood is the more expensive and bigger restaurant with the red awning, open only during lunch and dinner. The more casual spot, Neptune Wonton Noodle, is open until late nights, with the green awning entrance. Having tried the Seafood Restaurant for a group dinner previously and all of us enjoying it, we stopped by again this time at their casual cafe for a pre-dinner stop. Their wide menu selection was well organized, separated according to specials of the day depending on the time. You will notice everything is cheaper from 2pm-5pm and late nights. They likewise offer $2.50 dimsum plates prior to 11am daily.

Service, as expected was friendly, fast, and efficient. The ambience is very similar to cafes in Hongkong - busy, alive, and totally bustling. Aside from wonton noodles, varying selections include congees, hotpots, set menus, chef's specials. We opted for the empress chicken as most tables seem to have this. Very similar to Singaporean Hainanese Chicken such that boiled chicken was served cold with pounded ginger dip. That and some tofu served in a claypot, nice! All dishes were delicious and abundantly portioned given the prices.

Very good cheap eats, and highly recommended for late nights. Like most noodle shops, cash only.

Neptunes is definitely not out of this world in terms of service. I don't know what it was; maybe they smelled the Seattle in us, but it had to be something because we seriously weren't getting the service we undoubtedly deserved after trekking through 3 hours of I-5 and trying to get through gridlocked 4th of July weekend-get-a-way traffic at the border. It took several attempts to flag down a server and once we got to our second round of dim sum, they seemed to have forgotten us. Nevertheless their food is pretty good; and when I mean pretty good, I mean pretty good.

We ordered an array of dim sum delights which pleased our overly hungry palate. Shu Mai, shrimp dumplings, custard buns, curry beef, panko dusted shrimp, pork filled dumplings. I would have to say definitely pleased with the food but not the service.

My parents like this one and come here regularly when they visit but it's not one of my personal favorites - I never eat here unless they're in town.  Neptune offers the discounted $2.50 dim sum if you eat before 11am and it's a great value at that price.  There is better dim sum elsewhere if you're paying full price.

For dinner, it's very traditional Chinese... I don't think my hubby ate much at all when he was here last time - take that with a grain of salt as he was one of the only 2 non-Asians in the restaurant!

Decor is very basic and the tables are small.  It's often crowded when we're there and service is typical of most restaurants in the area.  Food comes quickly and quality is okay.  There are many others I prefer in the area but this one is quite authentic and typically has sufficient parking :)

Came for seafood but didn't see many seafood items. They don't even have a seafood tank. Chicken in ginseng must be their specialty, because the entire place has strong ginseng aroma. We ordered a few items, but the food were unmemorable enough to mention. The price is cheap and the food tasted decent.

    Parking - free

Pros - cheap, fast, good location.

Cons - lack seafood menu. Food unmemorable but decent

Recommendation - go here if you need food late at night. The place opens 'til late and the food is cheap while taste decent. I give it a strong 3 stars. For seafood, I still like Kirin (more expensive, but worthwhile)

Run of the mill, no thrills Won Ton house that caters to the late night crowd. Menu items ranges from congee, noodle soups to rice/chow mein and individual stir fry dishes.

Not as good as Congee Noodle house but is ok to satisfy midnight cravings.

I have just returned from Neptune Seafood Restaurant on No 3 Road, and honestly, I have not had dim sum this bad for a long, long time.  The prices were very expensive, though if you order before 11.00 am, there's a 20% discount.  If the dimsum were tasty, I would not have minded paying the high prices! We ordered siu mai which contained hard, chewy prawns, steamed garlic squid and spareribs which were tasteless ......... There were plenty of staff on hand, though that did not mean the service was particularly good.  On two occasions, the waiter tried to take away our dim sum when it was obvious there was still food left!!  Maybe, they knew that their food was so bad that their customers often left food uneaten.

Anywhere I can get congee at 1am is going to rate highly in my books.  Better yet if the congee is of good quality, which it is at Neptune.  I think Neptune's congee comes very close to that of Congee House, which many people - myself included - believe to have the best congee in the Vancouver area.
