This is BY FAR -- the best place in town to get a good view of the city. It's a little bit off the beaten path, but as a tourist or even as a local, it's a great place for photos, to watch a sunset, to read a book, to relax, or even toss a frisbee around!
With a panoramic view of the Parliament, the Alexandra Bridge, the Ottawa river, the Museum of Civilization, and much more, it's hands now my favorite "chill" spot. I've come here for picnics many times, or even late at night for a magnificent view.
I take it it's probably an amazing view for fireworks downtown, or at the casino.

Cool park to sit and relax and get a great view of the Ottawa River and Gatineau. Nice views of Parliament, too. It's just next to the National Gallery, and a few blocks from ByWard Market. No playground, just a big, grass-covered hill.
It's a great spot to watch fireworks from!! Also, you'll spot lots of wedding parties taking photos here on the weekends.Listed in: Canadia! - The Experience

So where is the best place in Ottawa to watch a sunset? Some would say the gazebo behind Parliament Hill. Sure the view there is pretty nice and the setting is historic but there's an often a lot of people kicking around.
Nepean Point, in my opinion, is the best place in Ottawa to watch the sunset or just watch the boats come in and out of the Rideau Canal or up and down the Ottawa River.
This park has a spectacular view of Parliament Hill, Museum of Civilization in Hull and everything I listed above. It also has historical significance too. It's home to a large statue of Samuel de Champlain holding a astrolabe.
The lookout is nice for picnics, photographers and special events (there's an amphitheatre which uses the Parliament buildings as it's natural backdrop).
