My girlfriend and I came here twice on our visit from San Francisco and it hit the spot. We were visiting friends for the long weekend so we were on a budget. Fresh, healthy food at reasonable prices is definitely a winning combination. Everything seemed to have a slight Latin American flair to it, inspired by the chef I'm sure.

My first try was the fish tacos, they weren't the best I've ever had but it was light, the batter was tasty (even though I have a habit of drenching hot sauce on things). Pretty normal for fish tacos, needless to say I was satisfied.

My second meal I had was a grilled vegetable salad with a tahini dressing. That was truly a salad I wish I could have over and over again. Perfectly grilled vegetables with the smoky char, and the sliced jicima made a refreshing crunch.

I also had a cup of lentil soup, which I instantly devoured with the sweet hunk of grain bread I got.

If I lived here I'd definitely be a regular and will try everything on the menu.

Hands down one of my favorite places to eat when I am in SLO.

Been at least 7 times and everything I have ordered have been fresh and delicious.  I usually order vegetarian when I am there, but tonight I ordered the fish tacos and I was not disappointed.  Big chunks of fish marinated in their yummy salsa wrapped in a double corn tortilla, topped with purple cabbage and shredded carrot.  I chose their blue tortilla chips (which I just adore) and salsa as my side but you can substitute rice and beans for a dollar more.

The staff is always friendly.  The last couple of years my husband and I have been going to the cafe we have been bringing our kids (3 & 4) and they love the food too and the girls are always so sweet to them.  Love the warm wood decor and how you just get your own water and silverware.  Just casual and non-high maintence.  I mean if you are looking for a date place this might not be it, but if you want good non-pretenious vegetarian/healthy food....get your butt over to Natural Cafe.

Oh and try their shakes....the blueberry...KILLER!!!

So typically I go to the Natural Cafe, even on the busy and hectic nights of Farmers Market. It's always so fresh, filling and a wide variety for Vegetarians.  This last visit I had ordered the vegetarian chili and found a piece of plastic in it, also to make matters worse the Corn bread was horrid. So disappointed this time around and when mentioned, the staff didn't seem to bother. :(

If you're looking for a solid place to go with vegetarian and vegan options, this is the place for you.  I've been here many times, and never have had a bad meal.  I most recently had the grilled veggie sandwich, which was bursting with sprouts, grilled squash, onions and bell peppers.  Messy, but good.  Sometimes the service is slow (but that's often when the place is quite busy), but the food is tasty and I'm just happy with so many veggie options!

This place has become one of my favorite places to eat in SLO. I came here twice with different people and we all left feeling satisfied. When you first enter, it feels really comforting and has a vacation feel to it. I think it's all the by the beach decor. You walk up this slightly sloped ramp to get to the cashier. Along the way, you can grab a menu and decide what you want. I came here for dinner my first time, and got the 1/2 sandwich and soup paired with smoothie (no sherbet or ice cream, just fruits and juice!) my first time here. It was delicious!! You can to choose the filling (albacore melt, avocado, or turkey), and for the soup it was cream of broccoli or the vegetable lentil. I chose the cream of broccoli and albacore (there's pictures). My total was ~$12, which I think it was worth every penny.

The 2nd time I came here I got the Cobber Gobbler (turkey burger) with avocado from the recommendation of my friend. I also got a smooth, this time it was the S.B. special. total was $13.45. We sat down at any table of our choice, and placed the number they gave me on the table. When our food is ready, the waiter brings the food to the table.  Two of my friends that I came with got the same thing, and we all enjoyed it. The burger comes with a side of organic chips and salsa. Delish!

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, especially if you feel like eating a burger by doesn't want something too fattening.

They don't take Discover for credit card.

    Smoothies:
The Lisa Fellini tastes like Aloha pineapple from Jamba
The S.B. Special has a strong peach flavor to it
    Very Berry is like Razzmatazz
Strawberry fields is like Strawverry Wild

First off this isn't necessarily a BAD place to eat its just extremely hit and miss.  I'll go there one time and its very tasty then I'll go again and the food will be really bland.   I've had the gobbler burger, chicken enchiladas, hummus, blueberry and orange milk shakes.  the chicken enchiladas are really good so are their shakes.  As for the gobbler burger...season it up!  I had to pretty much douse it in ketchup, partly my fault I could of asked for more thousand island or something but still.  However, their hummus is almost inedible - NO taste AT ALL.  My mom said it was the worst hummus she's ever had and I can't disagree with her.  I would of much rather paid extra and gone to Big Sky, at least they're consistently good.

Arrived in SLO during Thursday night market in Downtown, so it was pretty hectic but the service was quick and the food was delicious.

I like that they advertised fresh ingredients and a love for Mother Earth.  My husband had the veggie tacos and I had the veggie tamales--perfect portions.

Big plus:  Organic Beer from London, UK!!
Big con:  My "on the side" salad dressing came in a little plastic container as did my husband's salsa for his tortilla chips.  Not very sustainable.

I LOVE their food, everything is really fresh and homemade(they have a chicken salad with brown rice that is divine-Mission salad?).  Very tasty smoothies and homemade salad dressings.  I give it 4 stars because it is a little pricey, so I don't go too often.

After a five-hour drive from Los Angeles, I was starving and needed food inside me as quickly as possible. That's when I spotted Natural Cafe in the midst of the raging farmers market, which was somehow raging despite the frigid nighttime temperatures.

In any case, the food was delicious and very reasonably priced, considering how pricey these sorts of restaurants can be. My only complaint was that nothing was really filling. My veggie burger was inhaled almost instantly, and my friend's chicken pita disappeared in just seconds. Delicious, but man! Either I was starving, or there really wasn't much substance to anything.

But in spite of the "snack-like" satiation that night, I was impressed by the food and will most likely return to other locations if I ever encounter one again.

I was in SLO for a daytrip with my girlfriend to visit her sister at CalPoly. We were wandering around town and decided we wanted to grab an earlyish dinner when we stumbled upon The Natural Cafe on my yelp app. Lucky for us, it was only a few blocks away so we got there and so it began. Firstly, we didn't realize it was school lunch style till we got almost half way inside. What was good, was that we each were able to get something completely different. What's nice were all the yummy salad dressings. Mmmm. So you go up to the counter, order, and they deliver to your table. Took about 15 minutes. Then again, there were only two other tables in the place.

Food was good. I had the grilled portabella sandwich. It was really yummy, except wayyyyy too much cheese. My girlfriend had the pasta sauce extravaganza, which barely had enough sauce to cover half the pasta, but she said it was still good. Her sister had the veggie lasagna, which looked alright, but didn't look like there were really enough vegetables. I make a mean veggie lasagna and it'd put 'em to the test any day.

Music and atmosphere was good, they've also got big windows by the sidewalk that open up real wide. Very nice for us because it was just starting to cool off and we got a bit of a breeze.

Overall, the place was decent. Id say we'd be back, but It'd probably only go for a salad next time. If they maybe stepped up the food a notch it'd be a lot better.

Natural cafe is a casual restaurant - order at the counter and food delivered to your table. The menu has extensive healthy options for salads, soups, and classic sandwiches, pasta dishes.

    We ordered the following:
-Portabella mushroom sandwich- I was pleasantly surprised with flavors of this classic sandwich on toasted wheat bread with cheese, a pesto sauce, alfalfa sprouts and tomato. Yum.

-Chicken quesadella - a nice wheat torilla with flavorful chicken.

    - grande nacho - huge portion, but not that special. Blue chips topped with olices, black bean, cheese and brown rice. The rice was a weird combo.

seating is plentiful. Only one stall bath for each gender. Our friend found that the bathroom does not have a baby changing table.

Many options to choose from, but the ones we had were kind of bland and boring.  The enchiladas were saved by tapatio, and the portobello sandwich was fairly mediocre.  I thought it strange that the enchiladas came with a side salad and the sandwich with chips and salsa.  Seems backwards, no?  Not a complaint, just an observation.  I'm happy to take either one.  It's great that they're all eco-conscious and doing their part with natural foods and all, but do the side sauces and dressings have to come in plastic cups?  At least we had real utensils and not disposable ones.

We are longtime fans of the Natural Cafe in SLO and several of the other Central Coast locations.

This is another restaurant that we wish we had in the Bay Area-----why don't we?

The Natural Cafe has great food for Vegans, Vegetarians and Omnivores at reasonable prices.

We have been to Natural Cafe locations dozens of times since they opened in 1993.  We go to the SLO location at least 3-5 times a year during our trips down 101 to LA.

One aspect that I like is not only do they offer a wide variety of food, but they have a kids' menu and options for people who want to eat lighter meals  ----my family doesn't fall in this category........8)

Appetizers range from soups ($3/$3.95)  to Nachos , quesadillas. hummus, chili, guacamole and chips (everything from $3.50- $6.95)

Ten kinds of salads ----half or full with chicken, albacore, tofu add-ons

Fifteen kinds of sandwiches (11 which are meatless, including avocado, grilled veggies, tempeh burger, veggie burger, tofu hot dogs, grilled cheese).  Meat choices are turkey, albacore, chicken )
    (Prices are from $4.50-$6.75)

There are also pasta entrees. vegetarian entrees (tamales, stir fry, enchiladas, veggie or tempeh tacos , and more), fish and chicken entrees.

You can also order sides (grilled veggies, brown rice, beans, corn bread. garlic bread, tempeh, tofu, chicken, albacore and at least 10 other items).  All are priced under $3.95!)

Last time we were there we shared a salad, hubby got the Mr. Natural
(Steamed veggies over brown rice), son got the Mighty Marinara pasta dinner and yours truly thought she'd get something
'simple' and ordered the Veggie stuffed spud.

Yow!  I was served this HUMONGOUS potato--we're taking Guinness Book of World Records BIG!---and I'm not really exaggerating!
I could only eat 1/3 of it and I was stuffed!

We like to get a side of garlic bread, milk shakes and fruit smoothies.

We also have eaten the tofu dogs, veggie burger and at least half the items on the menu.......but not in one sitting...haha

I'm not sure when we'll be in SLO but when we do we'll eat here again!

I guess if I lived in SLO, I would eat here plenty - but as I don't, I am not in too much of a hurry to head back.

The counter-service and the large menu of unrelated food items together make for a grungy atmosphere, father than a delicious culinary experience: The vibe is definitely down-to-earth and ambitious selection leads to many dishes not being done quite as well as they could be - the whole thing is kinda.... amateurish

If they focused on a menu with half the items and let you order form your table, I am sure the quality of the food and the dining experience woyuld be lifted out of the doldrums that it is.

Having said all that, the food is good, wholesome and (for the most part) healthy. There are lots of vegetable options and some chicken/turkey/fish offerings (I don't consider those :Natural" or even healthy - hormones and heavy metals, people!).

My hot-dog with chili beans could have used a lot more spice, but the (much overlooked) baked potato wass well done and lead me to wonder, once again, why the baked spud is not more widely served.

In fact,  I might go back for the tater some time I am passing through!

On a recent visit to SLO, I got taken out to the Natural Cafe, which bears a distinct resemblance to some of the places I remember from growing up in Berkeley. Very natural woodsy, with just enough sprouts on the sandwich to add a little crunch.  It's casual, with counter service only.

My turkey burger was not too dry, but the guacamole and special sauce helped it along in the moistness department. I didn't walk away from the meal feeling all gross and over full like you would with a normal burger and fries.  Yeah for whole grains and veggies!

Nice little grocery in front of a cramped "cafe" dining area.
Interesting menu items - always have to check out any new recipe ideas.

Large menu board with lots of yummy things. But...

The thing is when we went to order the cooks were back snarfing food with bare hands while preparing the food. One had food falling out of her hands back on to the counter.

It just seemed unhygienic and a little tooo casual.
I mentioned it to the manager at the cash register.
    So maybe they have changed.

Interesting place! They have quite a bit of vegetarian options.

You need to order at the counter, pick up a number and then wait at your table. Food arrived quite quickly.

    Here's my rating:
Split Peas Soup: Very thick & tasty. Rich flavors. Was served with some grain bread
Quesidilla: Served with whole wheat chapati. It was quite OK, although the flavor of the chapati (Tortilla) overpowered the veggies.
Veggie Sandwich: Highlight of the meal!
Milkshake: A little too sweet for our taste.

The place is nice to hangout, and is right in downtown. Good people watching place too.

I stopped here with the NYG as we were driving down to LA from Santa Cruz.  I'd eaten at the Santa Barbara Natural Cafe on several occasions and been thoroughly impressed.  As a vegetarian at the time, NC definitely appealed to me with their flexible menu and tofu offerings.

In my ongoing effort to maintain my weight, I ordered a beer and some alfredo broccoli pasta.  Carb-tastic.  The NYG ordered a salad.  Everything about our meal was unimpressive.  The alfredo sauce was bland and runny, the pasta corkscrews overcooked, and there were a total of 3 minuscule pieces of broccoli in my dish.  Meanwhile, the beer I picked "Carta Blanca" was horrendous.  The NYG's salad was slightly wilty, and the dressing she was offered tasted like something out of a KRAFT zesty bottle.

Maybe we just ordered the worst items on the menu, but I don't think I'd come back to this natural cafe again.  I'm sure there are plenty of other great eateries in SLO.

Awesome food, very healthy. Great deserts, great prices!  You can always find  vegetarian food here, as well as chicken and fish.  I haven't looked for beef to know if they serve it or not.

I like the whole grain pastas.  They seem to always have a special involving salmon, and is always good.

It's deli style - order at the counter, they bring it to you.

If you want terrific food at a good price, come here.  If you want someplace fancier to impress a date, go over to Big Sky where they have waiters.

Bathrooms are clean.  My pet peeve is icky bathrooms, it makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is.

I loved this place!  Did a weekend trip to SLO, and I ate here twice.  I was so happy with my first experience, that I came back the next morning.  I'm really into natural, healthy, vegetarian-style food.  The meals were delicious, fresh, and service was friendly and quick!  My bf and I shared all our meals.

The only problem I had was that lots of their food had cheese in it.  It luckily was very easy to ask for it out, and the girl behind the counter gave suggestions for substitutions.

    My opinions on food ordered:

Portobello sandwich:  Delicious!  They were able to substitute the cheese and garlic mayo with hummus.  I'm happy because the salesgirl suggested it when I told her I was lactose intolerant.

Lima-Bean Soup + 9-grain bread:  YUM.  I love lima beans.  This soup is vegan... so happy!

Natural Tamale:  Also delicious.  The corn masa was really good.  Wish there was a little more?  But it was a good sized portion.  The black beans and rice were delicious, so I did get full.

Yogi Special:  I really loved this.  I love tofu, and the taste wasn't overpowering.  Some people might think it's a bit bland, but I really enjoyed it.  The combo of this with the rice was perfect!  I think the tofu portion was a little much, but I ad dinner with the leftovers!

Side salad with lemon herb sauce:  I like that they put the sauce in little containers.  I hate when salads are drenched in dressing.  *happy*

Carrot Cake:  Too much frosting, but easy to scrape off.  I don't like too much frosting.  But the cake itself was delicious!  Even had a hint of lemon. *love*  Sadly I only had a few bites because my bf (who doesn't like sweets) devoured the majority of it.

Aloha-Bra Smoothie:  Pineapple + banana + pineapple-coconut!  Really flavorful and really delicious.  I like that there's no ice, sherbert, or fillers.

Good place for a quick bite.

The portion sizes are truly large, and the selection for Vegetarians is good.  I might not be a Veg, but I travel through this part of CA with them a lot ... so it is nice to know a place to stop and be able to meet all the needs of all the diners.

The salads are pretty much enormous.  Seriously.

Fruit smoothies are made with fruit ... and not much (if anything) else.

    I like it.

Every time I find myself wandering through downtown San Luis I end up lunching at The Natural Cafe (thank goodness!). I have probably eaten here 12+ times and still can't get enough.  You instantly feel clean and crisp when you walk in the door. The decor is very calming, yet minimal. Hardwood floors, lots of light and white and green paint. Grab a menu on your way to the cash register and order when you are ready.

You do not need to be a veggie obsessed person to have a wonderful experience at Natural Cafe. The only thing you must be, is willing to treat your body to some healthy and fulfilling food. Not to difficult right? I usually share an order of hummus with whomever I am dining with and I especially like their wheat pita bread. Then I always order my fave, the grilled vegetable salad. It has loads of grilled eggplant, jimica, bell-peppers and onions. It comes in a huge bowl that you can choose to share (I always just order one for myself). Now, I am not a big dressing person and usually stick to the standard O&V, but I must vouch for their Tahini dressing, fantastic!

If you feel like a wrap, a sandwich, chicken stir-fry or tofu plate, this Cafe still has you covered. They have excellent beverage options and friendly service that add to their wonderful ambiance!

They close at 9pm and my husband and I got their at 8:50pm.. and they still served us with a smile. I felt bad, but the nice girl behind the counter said not to worry about it.

SLO is filled with delicious food, but a lot of isn't healthful but The Natural Cafe is a great healthy option.

I tried the veggie lasagna and was absolutely surprised and thrilled with how delicious it was. It was yummy and filled with vegetables cooked to perfection. Not too mushy, but soft enough to pass as lasagna texture. With the lasagna you get an order of garlic bread that reminds me very much of Sizzler's amazing cheesy bread. It lacks the proper amount of garlic to really be considered garlic bread, but all in all tasty.

The prices are alright. At first I was taken aback by the numbers because for healthy food, the prices are identical to most of the less healthy restaurants. I was worried that I would order a plate for $8-9 and have to eat some bland vegetable mess. Luckily The Natural Cafe  makes good food, so order away! I loved my veggie lasagna and my roommate loved her eggplant sandwich, 2 for 2 - a good sign, right?

The atmosphere is really nice. Open and light. Surprisingly large for a place downtown, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Took one star off because this place doesn't make me jump up or down. Not yet at least. I also don't have much experience in restaurants like the The Natural Cafe, so I don't want to go around slapping 5 stars on this place unless I can legitimately say this is one of the best restaurants. Either way, this place is worth giving it a try.

LOVE this place. healthy and fan freakintastically delicious. I actually have to admit i judged this place before actually eating it, and opted to grub on some in n out before hand when my friend wanted to go here. After she ordered some measley rice and steamed veggies it had pretty much summed up my feelings about the place. UNTIL, another friend of mine took me in here so she could grab some food and i actually looked over the menu, i didnt even have to taste it to know it had to be amazing just reading the description! and i was right! from the sandwiches to the soups to the salads to the burgers.. YUM YUM YUM. and healthy!!

We were in town visiting friends and decided to try this place out.  The food was pretty good, I had the veggie tacos and enjoyed them.   It was a little busy and the service was slow so I took one star off for that but I would certainly eat there again next time I'm in town.

Natural Cafe provides a laid back atmosphere that I love. When I feel like having something more on the healthier side, I go to Natural Cafe! I love it when they have pasta on the daily special menu because the portions are large and very well worth it.

The pesto pasta is my favorite with the lemon herb dressing on my salad. I like the fact that I can get the water myself since I don't like waiting around for a waiter/ress to fill my cup up. I also like getting my own utensil and sauces.

I'm fairly ambivalent about Natural Cafe. It is all simple no-frills fare. And yes, it is all very fresh and healthy for you, but when I go out to eat I like to eat things I couldn't make at home. And I'm pretty sure I could make everything offered at Natural Cafe.
That being said, this is a great place if you are in a larger group that is indecisive about deciding what to eat, becuase they have something for everyone. Salads, mexican, sandwiches, soups, just a little bit of everything.

Overall, it was a great sit-down experience, in a cute little part of downtown SLO.

    But...

While I enjoyed the experience a ton, and loved the fact that their menu was pretty diverse in covering meals for vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores, the food was pretty bland. Not "so-bland-it's-not-edible" bland, but definitely in need of some sort of kick!

I ordered some tempeh tacos, which were marinated in a semi-spicy red sauce, but all that came on them was lettuce and sprouts! Really? No guac?! No beans?! No pico de gallo or other dressing of sorts?! I ended up taking some scraps of our SUPER NACHOS (which were great, btw) and tossing that on top of 'em, making them a little more flavorful. My boyfriend got a veggie chili dog, and it also had the same problem: lack of flavor. I was pretty disappointed that they didn't even include mustard on that bad boy! But it was still highly edible, and we left extremely full...just wish there was more shazaam to it!

If you wanna be healthy, stop by here.
If you want a great sandwich... don't come.
If you want a smoothie... come on in!!!

The smoothies would be the #1 reason for me to eat here... and the food second. Their soup always has seemed better to me than the rest of the menu, though everything I've seen served so far has been very fresh. And to me, (I'm no health freak) fresh usually equals bland.

Soup and a smoothie! Then dessert!

I just returned for another meal with my parents. There was little to no flavor in anything I tried.

I appreciate what they're trying to do with sustainability, etc. but that doesn't make up for their tasteless, uninventive, food.
