Fun music. Fun watching people you wouldn't expect to see dance, get it in on the dance floor for hours!! My hubby and I unfortunately finished our drinks and danced out the door to a more 'adult' establishment.

So, if you just graduated college, this place is A+++!! If you graduated a few years ago, it's fun watching the newly graduated kids!!

Ugh. Imposing former bank bldg hints that if the thieves of Wall St. have escaped prison, this might be a suitable life sentence; eating every meal here for the rest of their  days.

If there was a 1/2 star, it would still be a stretch. Genial service was trumped by the most mediocre pub grub ever. Recipe for their Popcorn chicken resembled small Lego bits dipped in Styrofoam, deep fried then allowed to rest ...for a week.

I had been to National Mechanics before, for drinks on a slow Sunday night, and also on a Friday when it is packed and has a dance floor. I didn't think it was anything spectacular.

Then I was meeting up with a group of friends, 7 or 8 of us I believe, and National Mechanics was chosen as our dinner spot.

We got there at about 6 on a Saturday night, were seated at a large table and given menus and drinks shortly there after. It took us a long time to decide what to eat, but even longer for our server to come back and take our orders--probably close to 45 minutes.

I ordered the fish tacos, sans onions. They were easily the best fish tacos I've had. I still think about them from time to time, but they aren't on the regular menu. I also tried some of my friend's burger. DELICIOUS.

The food menu is pretty affordable, but like anywhere, drinks can get expensive.

I've heard they have a Bloody Mary bar during brunch....perhaps I'll experience that soon.

Well, as everyone else has said, the architecture and general ambience of this place are amazing. I went last Friday after First Friday shenanigans. It was pretty packed, but we got a table straight away and had some food and dranks. The prices were pretty reasonable for the drinks, though I was told there is a $15 credit card minimum at the bar. I didn't mind, though, in retrospect, I wish I hadn't had that second one that I needed to meet the minimum.

Great open area for dancing, which you will CERTAINLY want to go, given their wonderful music selection. Any place where I can cut a rug to "Single Ladies" while enjoying a Long Island and a big order of fries is a winner in my book!

The Old Town of Philadephia is beautifully historic, the architecture just took my breath away. I was surprised when I arrived at National Mechanics, it was not what I expected at all.

It looks like a historic bank or civic building, all regal. Inside, the music was bumping and the crowd was drinking it up. I felt inclined to dance it up, but ordered a couple beers first.

Almost everytime I see Delirium Tremens (7.0APV%) on tap - I order it. http://www.yelp.com/us... It's one of my absolute favorites and call it my birthday beer, because it's what I drink when I deserve the very best. Which is almost anytime.

Coworkers and I decided to drive into Philly one night to check out the scene.

We wanted to grab a drink and stumbled across National Mechanics on Yelp. It was Wednesday night so it was quizzo trivia time! We were promptly seated when we arrived and I stuck with my Yueling Lager.

The crowd consisted mostly of young professionals and there was a good vibe all around. We enjoyed our drinks and listening to the questions that were being asked (one coworker got so many of them right!)

Too bad we had to leave earlier since we had to get up early for work the next day.

Best part = we had 10 drinks for only $47! Back in LA, our bill definitely would've been closer to $100.

This review is probably going against my own self interest, but I must tell the Yelping world that trivia at National Mechanics on Wednesday night is super fun.  It's one of those trivia games where you do actually know a decent number of answers, without it being crazy esoteric questions like some other pub trivias.  The host is really fun.  And the servers are workin' their tails off during trivia but always so accommodating to large groups.  Get there before 7 pm and get a veggie burger for $7.  Best veggie burger in town.

I just hope none of you reading this review show up at trivia now, cause I want to keep having a shot at winning each week!

I'm not a "regular" kind of person -- I like trying new restaurants, bars, places too much to keep going to the old stale ones. But my friends go to National Mechanics every Wednesday for quizzo, and I kept joining, and all of a sudden the waiters and quizzomaster Rob knew me. And I guess I'm a regular. Which is kind of fun.

Food and drinks are good here. Great burgers, good fries. $2.50 Yuenglings on Wednesday night, which you really can't beat the price, though it often tastes kind of flat. But they have a great beer selection on tap of non-flat beers. I don't know how it gets on a weekend, but on Quizzo Wednesdays, National Mechanics has a great vibe.

While most reviews are about National Mechanics' brunch, I recently came on a Saturday night with a group of friends for some drinks and dancing. I'd definitely recommend coming earlier as the tables and bar area will get very crowded close to midnight. Service is friendly and accommodating, albeit a bit haphazard during the nighttime. Drink options are plenty and they have a fair number on tap and bottled. The DJ was able to get some good beats out and the girls and I had a good time dancing for a while.

Some of the cons? My friends and I wanted one of the drink special, the Harvest Sangria, but they had apparently run out during the day. And this was a major letdown as I love my sangria. Another minus was the fact that there were only two bathrooms for the entire location. There was literally a line of 10+ people waiting to use the bathroom that night. Not exactly a pleasantry, even though the bathrooms themselves were pretty nice.

A++ Brunch! Five Words: Make Your Own Bloody Mary. SOLD! They offer an array of vodka options (i.e., bacon infused vodka) and/or tequila. They also have a variety of rim options like bacon salt! WHAT!! Not to mention the countless hot sauce options and um slim jim sticks for stirring! My hangover disappeared with this little magic potion of bacon heaven.

The Eggs Maryland and French Baguette Toast were AMAZING! Super delicious and reasonably priced! Our server, Mackenzie, was very friendly and efficient. She was the only server for the entire restaurant that was full and she managed to wait on us with no complaints. Love this place and will take more friends with me next time!

Definitely a fun place on a Saturday night. It gets a little crowded, but not to the point that you can't move around or find your friends. The only real drawback of the crowd is that it can make it tough to get a drink sometimes.

There's a decent number of tables and a lot of room to stand and talk. The back portion becomes a dance floor with a pretty fun DJ (even if he looks completely out of place - almost makes it better). There's some good beers on tap from all over the country, all around the $5-6 range, with a few cheaper options. Not outrageous but I wouldn't call the place cheap. All in all, it's a step up from a frat scene bar and a pretty good time out.

Went on a Sunday afternoon with my boyfriend after seeing several people stroll in. We both ordered the burger topped with a fried egg. It was amazing!! They had several cheeses to choose from, my bf choosing the cheddar while I chose the pepper jack. The fries were big, fat steak fries, which I don't think restaurants use enough.  My only complaint was that the service was very, very slow, which can be a problem when you have the meter running.

I have nothing to add that hasn't already been said. Just wanted to throw in yet another opinion that National Mechanic's serves the best veggie burger ever. It's hard for me to imagine how anyone who has been a vegetarian (or just a veggie-burger enthusiast) for any length of time wouldn't love this burger. Obviously some people disagree but that's to be expected: dissatisfied customers with dissenting opinions are always more likely to seek out an online venue through which to voice their divergent point of view.  I would estimate that if you like veggie burgers, there's at least a 90% chance that you will love this burger.

The veggie burger itself gets 5 stars. I like National Mechanics as a bar but not at a 5 star level, hence the 4.

I went hear eager to try the veggie burger after so many rave reviews.  But I am allergic to mushrooms and it turns out the burgers are pre-mixed and include mushrooms, so I could not try one.

I had totally mediocre squash soup that was quite a rip off at $6 for a small bowl.  The $9 beat salad I had was very tasty and good (though not filling enough on its own).  Two different waitresses asked how I liked my meal and I told them honestly that the squash soup was boring and barely edible, and I recommended a few ways they could make it tastier such as adding cooked pureed apple or fresh ginger.  Their only other soup option was Campbell's tomato soup out of a jar (so the waitress told me).  It's also a place to go to socialize with friends but only if you've got time on your hands: I was there by myself for 90 minutes for my soup and salad...

Fun bar.  It's always a good standard place to meet up and grab drinks.

I haven't had the food so all I can comment on is the beer selection and my experience there.

Beer selection is very good.  Any place with the variety they have with the quick service I received will be a hit with me.

Very spacious with large bar area.

I hear they have kareoke and also a freak show perfromances on certain days.  I've yet to go for either.

The food is good, drinks are good, prices are good and atmosphere is relaxed.  They have a side show that happens once a month which is pretty cool to check out. They have a really good veggie burger that meat and nonmeat eaters will like-- fresh julienned veggies instead of a premade fake meat patty.

National Mechanics is an Old City staple. They have decent food at decent prices, great waitstaff, ample space and I love the decor. The terrariums and orchids are killer and the place is always decorated for the season. Right now they have a Christmas tree hanging from the ceiling. They offer a good variety of drafts and bottles and also have cocktails.

    I mostly go here for:

    Lunch
I work in Old City and 'Nat Mech' is our go to for lunch as a group. They aren't open on Mondays for lunch, but you can't beat a good burger (veggie or beef) or my favorite, the popcorn chicken. Always have plenty of seating room, good service and lunch is fairly priced for the area.

    Happy hour during the week
Happy hour Monday through Friday is good with a manageable group. They have $1 off drafts from 5-7pm. Pro tip: Check the board, not the table card for drafts on tap.

    I don't go here on:

    Weekends
I try to avoid National Mechanics on Friday and Saturday nights. It's not them it's me! They get swamped with people coming into the city for their night out and I'd rather avoid that crowd.

This place is awesome! It is housed in a historical-important-looking building in the true sense of Olde City. The crowd is college-age and young-professional, with a mixture of curious customers.

The DJ is fun and keeps the dance floor full while everyone gets drinks at the fully stocked bar. The beers are delicious and I think that may be the most important detail you get from this. They do have noms so eating isn't out of the question.

Have an after-party there. Go with friends having a birthday. Go to just enjoy being young and in an awesome city. Really, NM really fits all things you want to enjoy on a Saturday night.

The best part about National Mechanics: the tomato soup and grilled cheese with the crust cut off. It makes me feel like a kid, and it's perfect on a rainy day.

Some other good things about this place: the spacious booths and the decor. I mostly enjoy coming here during the day or early evening, before it gets too crowded. It tends to get a little too frat for me during the prime-time bar hours.

After freezing my butt off on the Hop on Hop off bus, I knew I needed a drink to warm my blood. Hopped on over to the National Mechanics. Relatively empty on a weekday afternoon, we had great service!

Highlight of the visit was their Pumpkin Pie drink! Pumpkin juice with whipped cream vodka. So yum and fall inspired!

Otherwise, they have a great selection of drinks overall. They also have their own marinated drinks, I especially liked their apple cinnamon infused whiskey.

Really fun place to hang out in Olde City if you're sick of Rittenhouse. Mix of college/grad school and young professionals. We've been here a couple times, and have always had a great time. Drinks are super strong and pretty well priced, and I love the old bank look with the dark wood decor.

    Additional thoughts:
-The DJ on Fri night was awesome, although it seems weird to have such a small dance floor section right next to the bathroom line
-The guy/girl ratio has been about 3:1 each time we went...good for single girls, bad for single guys.
-The "Reserved" tables also seemed weird to me - for such a casual place, do we really need to have "Reserved" signs like people are trying to get table service at a club?

But like I said it has some cool decor all around, So I borrowed a pint glass.

What's not to love?  It's a gastro pub in an old bank building -- the kinda bank building that says "I'm a safe depository of your riches, meager as they may be" because it looks like a Greek temple (...depository of Greek riches...in ancient times).  Inside, the dark-wood decor is lightly lit by an eclectic assortment of cool old-school incandescent bulbs hung inside an equally eclectic assortment of light fixtures.

The beer menu is not all that extensive (it's no Eulogy...), but the choices are good.  And that fifth star is earned by the food, which is quite tasty -- especially for a pub.  Their fish tacos are among the best I've had in Philly (and, yes, I've had Garces'), and their veggie burger might be the best I've had in Philly (though, admittedly, I'm no connoisseur of the dish).  Service is friendly and prompt enough for a bar.  Also, they host all sorts of interesting events.  Too bad Old City is out of my usual orbit.

We stumbled upon National Mechanics whilst wandering around Philadelphia during a First Friday funday. We were hungry and ready for some beer -- thank goodness NM came to the rescue! We had some great grub to refill the gas tank, and had a plethora of hoppy bevvies, just what we were looking for. Our waitress was very kind and accommodating, as well.

Also, VERY COOL: You put requests in for the juke box from your iphone. I've never seen that anywhere before. VERY COOL.

Your experience with National Mechanics starts with the outside. From the outside, National Mechanics looks like a museum, which certainly easily fits in with the surrounding aesthetic in Old City. The steps up to the bar actually remind me of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Once you're inside, the wooden interior half reminds me of a study in someone's mansion. One that I've always dreamed of having "when I grow up." Needless to say, National Mechanics may very well be the closest I'll ever get to that dream. National Mechanics has several different "events" every so often, ranging from a weekly trivia night (aka "quizzo" in Philadelphia) and live music, but the first event that brought me to the bar was the "Bibliodiscoteca" fundraiser my friend in the library science program invited me to. For the aforementioned reason, the location just seemed perfect. Obama was in his first year in office and they had a drink dedicated to him: some lovely concoction that was part beer and part some sort of chocolate liqueur. It remains one of my favorite drinks to date. Last time I went, there was a margarita using jalapeno-infused tequila. It wasn't my favorite - for the spicy drinks, I liked Franklin Mortgage and Investment Company's Jalapeno Martini much better. Their beer selection seems pretty awesome (even to a non-beer aficionado) - if I remember correctly, they have Yeungling on tap (which of course is pretty much standard for the Philly area), drafts from the other local breweries like Yards and Victory, and notably Lindemann's Framboise which was basically my gateway beer and very hard to get on draft in any bar, as well as many foreign bottled beers.

Quizzo - it's a pretty tough Quizzo. I went with two other fairly intelligent people but there were just so many detailed questions in genres we sucked at. It gets pretty full fast so get there early!

People seem to enjoy the food there but I haven't sampled any of the food myself.

Philly is home to a lot of great bars that have a way of feeling like a neighborhood bar to a lot of people. National Mechanics is definitely one of them.

Let me start out by discussing the positives. Oh wait, there weren't any. We came for brunch and waited. After we waited, we waited longer. All of this extra wait time gave me plenty of opportunity to check out the decor. Who decorated this place, Hannibal Lecter? I am not sure if it was the rotating horse tail in the corner, the mini greyhound with the flaming ass hole, or the dog with the multi sized utters, but it just rubbed me the wrong way. After we waited over 45 minutes for our entrees and my date suggested we just go, I will always regret not taking her up on that. My "pork belly" arrived and it looked like they took a few pieces of thick sliced bacon and nuked it for twenty minutes. When I use the word disgusting, please keep in mind that it is an understatement. It took 20 minuted just to get a round of drinks. Definitely did not receive enough alcohol to make me forget about poor service, terrible food, and disturbing decor. Hope my girlfriend doesn't dump me over this one, but to be quite honest, I really couldn't blame her if she did.

Meandered around the city looking for a lunch spot after a mid-day meeting. Happened upon National Mechanics and propped myself up at the bar. Bonus: purse hooks!

Enjoyed the beer selection and the asparagus and goat cheese salad. I was very tempted by other less healthy options (burger, shepherd's pie) but really wanted to sample more of the beer menu so I kept it low-cal (sorta). Tastes were great.

I imagine at night there is a certain type of person that frequents this bar, but at lunch I was joined by many sorts.  A tourist family, two history nerds, three corporate lunchers, a old married couple and two ladies lunching, to name a few.  Here it's lunch as you are and there's definitely something for everyone.

And next time I'm getting the burger.

Last Saturday at the unofficial elite event after party I learned that in Old City it is in fact possible to visit a bar on a busy night and not only can you find a seat and receive service within mere minutes of cozying up to the bar, but that you can also be taken care of without being overbearingly asked how you are doing. With four bartenders there was never a wait for anything, given the noise factor between the crowd and the DJ it was nice to not have to repeat an order over and over, every bartender got it right the first time. All of these wonderful qualities and a decent crowd to boot, none of the douchemongers you see in places like Mad River or Lucy's.

With an overqualified beer selection, I had a hard time deciding what to order. It was in a moment of hesitation that Daniel C. took the reigns and introduced me to what will now be my summer staple, RJ Rocker's Son of a Peach.

Less than a week after my first visit I was summoned to partake in an evening of Quizzo with a fellow yelper. Against my better judgement on a weeknight I went to test my fuzzy brain skills (which absolutely failed me on a Chumbawamba question that I'm still kicking myself over). The MC was alright, a few of his ramblings left people like us who were situated rather far from him wondering what the actual question was, but for a team of two with no fancy phone to cheat with, we held our own on topics ranging from sports and science to music and movies.

Oh hey, guess what else I learned at National Mechanics? That varicella is the scientific word for chicken pox and not the commonly mistaken term for nose hair. All in all this an absolutely decent spot any night of the week and one that I will be visiting again and again.

Been dancing here a few times on Fridays. Been here for Quizzo. At the 80's kid classic (grilled cheese and tomato soup). Like this place for all three said occasions. Go for a visit; it will not disappoint.

I have been here many times. The beer list is pretty solid, not amazing - but they have some good local ones. They always have yummy sounding fancy drinks like a jalapeno margarita.

Plus one: The quizzo here on Wednesdays is fun. On one particularly snowy night, my team even won.

Neither plus/nor minus one: Karaoke is okay. I went once - it's on Tuesdays, and I felt like the same people were singing over and over. There were a decent amount of people there, but I guess everyone was a little shy. (I didn't sing, so I guess I can't blame them).

Minus one: It gets pretty crazy crowded here on the weekends since it's Old City, but I do not hate this place like some other places in the area. There is some fun music though.

Plus two: I came to brunch the other day and it was fantastic. Pretty quiet - not a lot of people. I had two Bells Oberon with my meal and my friend had two Bloody Marys from the make your own bar. You pick your tequila and choice of rim, and they bring it out to you - and you use the mix, horseradish, hot sauce, steak sauce, slim jims, etc to make a pretty tasty drink. I don't love Bloody Marys but these were really good. We got guac and plantain chips to start (oh how I love plantain chips). I had a sandwich - tuna melt (a little too much cheese though). And my water glass never got under 1/2 full .... super attentive service.

That doesn't add up to four stars, so I'm giving them two more stars for the building and atmosphere. I like the outside of the building and the inside too! :)

I go here regularly for lunch cause the veggie burger rocks. It's even better with bacon and cheese.  Great lunch prices.

Beer list is ever rotating and they have great draft and bottle selections.

Service can be slow...both on the floor and from the kitchen. However, the place has the two bartenders work the whole floor during lunch on a weekday.

Cool place with a good variety of beers.  Big tables to fit large groups. Servers friendly.

    *Nightlife Review*

Celebrated my cousin's 23rd birthday here on a Friday night (no cover--yay!) and overall had a fairly decent time. Some of the people here were a little pushy and rude but hey, it's a bar in Old City with inebriated people with no rhythm so I dealt with them accordingly.

DJ played typical stuff to get the crowd moving but it felt like a high school dance. Nice selection of beers on tap and bottled. The line for the bathroom was always extremely long so plan ahead when using the facilities.

Before this night, I hadn't partied in Old City in about a good year...and coming here reminded me why. I might come back for happy hour and grab a beer or something but no more hanging out here after 10p.
