Review from Louise G.
Dropped in here for some Chinese salty donuts the other night.
My honey had made some congee for dinner (YES! He is a gem) and what congee is complete without donuts??? So on our way back through Vancouver from a late dental appointment on the North Shore we stopped at T&T. As was to be expected, they had one left - probably had been there all day, and it was in plastic and looking very sad.
(Aside: Did you know that under Emperor Yong Zheng, a famine broke out, so he ordered officials to make congee and distribute it to the starving. Corrupt officials would skimp on the rice and distribute very watery versions. The Emperor therefore set a standard that the porridge must be so thick that when a pair of chopsticks was inserted, it stays upright. Any officials who failed this standard was beheaded!!!)
#1 daughter suggested we stop at Nancy Wonton and get some donuts. She's a smart one my daughter.
We ordered 3 donuts asking carefully (or so I thought) if 3 meant three donuts. Well, as sometimes happen there was a translation barrier and instead of 3 donuts we ended up with 3 orders of donuts - 12 DONUTS!!!
But they were freshly made, and hot and the perfect thing to accompany my darling's homemade congee. YUM!
And as wise daughter said: "There is no such thing as too many donuts!!!!"
ps...congee was up to standards...nothing to lose ones head over ;-)Listed in: There and Back Again, Victoria Drive

Review from David W.
I love places the Cantonese locals eat and Nancy's is definitely a younger person's place to go. I peg the regulars at 16-35 which means most of the families with grandparents usually go to the Golden Swan down the road. This place is one of many along Victoria's Drive ever expanding Chinese neighbourhood that stretches, commercially, from 53rd avenue right down to Broadway (and east bound past Rupert).
It's a very typical Cantonese late night restaurant. The staff barely speak english and the service also very typical of Vancouver's in-and-out Chinese restaurants. The interior leaves much to be desired and you'll always be able to find a table.
Like most places it depends which cooks are working. They definitely have a chef that loves to cook with oil, and one that makes his dishes lighter but also less flavourful.
The hot and sour soup (dried shrimp excluded) is excellent as well as the beef rice congee.
I prefer my lemon chicken not drowning in batter but I know many people love it that way and this place generally offers lean cut boneless chicken breast for many of their dishes.
The lettuce wrap here is worth mentioning and you'll walk away with an entire bag of the largest lettuce leaves you've ever seen if you do take away. Far more than you need for the dish.
The egg foo young is giant, very flavourful, and packed with fillings which is often a regular complaint I have when discovering meagerly filled egg foo young in other places.
I find the moo shu to always be a bit oily and watery and the ginger beef isn't anything special.
A large appeal for this place is that its open late. Many of the restaurants in the area have adopted late night hours as the expanding Chinese population can now support this traditional custom.
Why this place is a 3 star and not a 4 star. Communication and service. The staff here is overworked and often you'll find only the wife taking care of the entire restaurant. They have a second women who works there that has better service, but this place is still sadly lacking. Also, I've never seen anyone different than those two which means they work 7 days a week.
I've done take out numerous times where they've forgotten things like the hoisin sauce, or the lemon sauce for lemon chicken. Not that fried chicken isn't bad, its just no longer lemon chicken. -

It's unfortunate how one dish can leave an enduring impression. I can't remember how I felt about my other dishes.
The offending dish was braised mustard greens. I love all kinds of cooked bitter greens. These stalks had lost all structure from being overcooked. They were smothered in a congealing, corn starch- thickened sauce that was unseasoned and added a sticky quality. It had the yellow colour that appears when the green has been thoroughly cooked out of greens.
And the portion was tiny, about 5 stalks. I was very unhappy to pay $8.95 for a poorly executed $1.00 side dish. -

After a failed attempt to try one of the spots on my list of places to try (sadly it was closed when I passed by) I ended up stumbling into this spot instead.
It is a fairly typical HK casual restaurant. I tried the usual suspects of wonton noodles and a side order of chicken knees.
Thoughts:
- I wondered why I couldn't find wonton brisket noodles or wonton tendon noodles on the menu? So I settled for wonton noodles without my favourite additions. Sadly the noodles had that ammonia taste you sometimes get when they don't change the water often enough. Do you know the one I mean? I'm not a big fan of that ammonia taste at all. The wontons also were not very hot. I think they had just barely thawed out and were a bit cold in the centre. Meh!
- The chicken knees were decent, but had a bit too much breading and not enough content. There were several pieces that were all breading and nothing inside! The garlic and peppers were ample. Overall not terrible - but nothing to rush back for.
With the incredible selection of places that offer this style of food in the Vancouver area I don't see myself returning anytime soon.Listed in: Vancouver Chinese Food, Vanoodle, Vancouver Dumplings

Typical Chinese food joint. Had a craving for Wonton noodle soup. Heard about this place and I was travelling through the neighbourhood on my way home.
A quick pit stop and my craving was satisfied. Can't go wrong with the prices. -

Victoria Drive is more interesting then I thought. I'm slowly trying out more and walking further to discover .. more!
I stumbled into Nancy's Wonton House and was quite pleased with the food. Wonton's comparable to the wonton's at Congee Noodle House. I also had the deep fried tofu with garlic and chillis, garlic'd pea tips, and a bowl of congee. (ok I wasn't by myself). Everything tasted really good but the service was SO slow! I finished my iced milk tea before anything arrived on the table! I could forgive that if the place was busy with only one waitress but there were only three tables of a few people so ... it made me wonder what was going on? Were they JUST wrapping the wontons?
Waitress did apologize for the wait so atleast she even thought that it was out of the ordinary.
It was very inexpensive for the meal and even took home some leftovers! I will most likely visit them again on the weekend when Congee Noodle House is too busy! -

I go out of my way to eat here. Yes its your typical chinese wonton-congee-noodle house, but they have the best soup in this category that I experienced.
I'm a soup addict, and my favorites at Nancys are:
Fish maw & chicken; and
egg drop, beef & parsley (west lake soup)
Other place's soups are too watery, or thick like glue. And not as flavorful.
The rest of the menu is pretty standard, wonton noodles, congee etc. I usually order my own dishes, e.g. wonton & beef brisket -

Went here for a late night meal at the last minute. They had decent congee and noodles. It was very much a "wham bam thank you maam" type of meal, which is actually what I prefer at midnight. It is the average greasy late night chinese food joint. I don't think I would go out of my way to eat here though.
