Vancouver, BC
I'm not so outwardly effusive about this place like others are - even though I've given it 5 Stars.
It is very good, though, and it's the whole package, really.
Hours (open late), food, service, decor, location, it all works for me.
I did all the ordering - kind of like an educational experience for my friend.
Got:
Oden - great, light taste. The variety of what's included wasn't the best, but I can't complain. (I always want more than one egg for example). Beats the Lawson's and 7-11 stuff that I used to live off of in Japan, though.
Yaki-Udon:Not a fan. I'm just not big on slimy yaki udon. Plus the portion was small and it's almost $10 - this is a definite pass in the future.
Yakitori: Got a bunch, and it was good. Got the salted and the sauced.
Beef Short Rib:Great taste! Beef melts in your mouth.
Beef Tataki: it was good!
Bunch of other stuff I can't remember now ... but ended with ...
Chazuke: Got Unagi and Ume - my friend was stuffed, so I was made to eat BOTH. Both were super, but man that Unagi chazuke ... THAT was super! Big piece of Unagi on top!
This is a must, although, if in the neighborhood with groups of friends I'll probably always stick with one of the HK Cafes - for obvious reasons. -

So...I've been here twice now since they started doing lunch again.
I've had the Shio and Shoyu ramen, both with extra char-su and I have to say, the only thing really holding me back from giving a 4-star review, are the noodles. They just don't do it for me. I like the broth, the pork, the service, but unfortunately, I don't think their noodles are up to snuff (Motomatchi takes the cake for me). Another thing that irked me was that they served tea in plastic cafeteria style cups. I just think for authenticity, they should use some decent porcelain or baked clay cups.
It's still a solid ramen joint and it's even better that it's only 5 minutes from my home.
I would recommend this place if you were in Lotus land and were hankering for some ramen! -
Review from Nancy W.
G-men Nan Chuu now re-opened where Nan Chuu used to be is now G-men Nan Chuu Ramen. I was so disappointed when the Sexsmith Continental Center location was closed. I've been meaning to try the Alexandra Road location for some time and what a better time than to bring a good friend here to. He was like Nance, take me to somewhere exotic... Exotic ramen may not be, but for someone who has never tasted ramen it could be... Plus it is truly comforting for a rainy day! I've always enjoyed company of people who are adventurous and does not get turned off by trying new things. (BTW, in case you were wondering, he really liked this place!)
Little has changed from the previous operations, but being part of the Gyoza King group who has also brought you Gyoza King, Gyo-O, G-Be Izakaya and Grazy Dog you can be sure of quality. It's always a struggle to find hearty ramen outside of Denman Street and Japan.
Problem with parking is that it is limited in the back. During dinner hours it can be quite challenging if you don't fancy paying for street parking.
Torigara Shoyu Ramen 8.75
Light chicken broth (seasoned with soy sauce) much like Motomachi Shokudo is very flavorful and rich. Was the soup slightly too oily? Perhaps, but since I load on chili oil and minced garlic part-way thru, it really doesn't matter too much. Besides, chicken based broth is already has a lower in fat content compared to the traditional tonkatsu (pork bone).
Overall the menu remains quite similar to the old location with a few tapas addition inherited from Nan Chuu. Price point is about $9 a bowl sans onsen egg and corn.
Torigara Shio Ramen is the light salt version and it is also very tasty -
Review from Wendy Y.
I am not sure if I've been here as the izakaya places nearby all look/feel the same. Regardless it was way too long since I've been in one in this hood so hey why not give it a try? Also, if the food didn't wow me at least I have my fellow Yelpers (UYE) here to keep me entertained.
I have heard Larry L. (our alpha dog) rave about this G-Men since the first time I met him so I ordered a soupless Ramen. My partner was being adventurous so he got himself a Tan Tan noodle. My soupless Ramen was a solid 5. The noodles were chewy with a bite. The toppings were plentiful. My favorite part was the sauce - simple, not salty, but full of flavor. The portion was huge too. I had Larry L. take some of my noodles but I still couldn't finish it and had to pack it home. Tan Tan Noodle was interesting...very peanut-y. It was the first time I had Tan Tan noodle but I must say I liked my order a lot more.
The kitchen staff sent us a few complimentary appetizers and the chicken karaage was soooo good I had to order another plate. I am not a big fan of fried food but the deep fried chicken was a perfect 10! The skin was well battered and not too thick. The meat was cooked through and very juicy. The grated Daikon as a dipping sauce was very refreshing with the chicken. What a marriage! The other appetizers included the tomato salad and sliced beef salad (with thinly sliced white onions). They were all delicious.
The UYE was a great success. Good food with good dining buddies. Larry L. you totally rocked this one!Listed in: Japanese Food

Just came back from Gmen Nan Chuu Ramen. I'll update their new hours next. Which by the way they are now open for lunch!! Started just last Thursday they will be open for lunch and in their evening to night hours.
Finally I can have a place to go for lunch again and enjoy my healthy lunch options (which they now have (yay) and their ramen which I can get my healthier options.
Their salads have a bit too much dressing for me, but I can spread out the dressing love so I can get even distribution of the dressing. I wonder if they can toss the salad in the dressing first (in a bowl) , then put it on the plate?
Kyoko san mentioned to me about their new healthy combo, which I used to order a variant of it at the old location (Natto combo). This one has no natto but has egg plant instead and is a great vegetarian option.
I enjoyed it quite a bit. One thing I would like to see more in restaurants now is a bit more brown rice options. If I'm going to eat rice these days, I much prefer brown rice, which is slowly getting more popular.
I'm going to have to do a UYE soon for this place. It deserves a revisit!Listed in: Asian Noodle Spots in Richmond, Ramen shops worth trying out

Review from Vincci L.
A completely new menu that has all the goodness of G-Men ramen?! Oh yes, I'm totally in.
With even more options that before, I'm glad there's once again a place in Richmond that can satisfy my ramen craving when I want it.
A whole new menu, with lots of colors and images for each item so you can visually order. I was so tempted to order many dishes because they all looked so good. I did manage to have some self- control, and I ended up ordering a miso butter corn ramen and a negi cha-siu to share.
They're also fully licensed. Sake, shochu, wine, beer, cocktails. They have it all.
The negi cha-su is one of the best appetizers. Lots of shredded scallions and green onions, sesame oil, and large pieces of braised pork.
Ramen was good, though the soup could have used more flavour. Pork, bean sprouts, green onion, corn and a small slab of butter on top. Delicious.
They also close late, so if you're ever in Richmond and craving for ramen, you know where to go. -

Review from Edward L.
Came across this place by accident and decided to give it a go. It's wedged between the more "famous" Kam Do and Cattle Hot Pot restaurants.
Parking in this plaza sucks in general, mainly because there aren't anywhere near enough spots in the back. There is more parking available in the adjacent plazas, at great risk of being towed.
If you look at the fine print on the front sign, you'll realize it's actually run by the same people who used to run G-Men (Continental Plaza).
Inside it looks like many other ramen places (old-style Japanese wood decor). The staff still speak Japanese as opposed to Chinese. Yay! There are also some vintage (maybe 1960s?) Japanese posters for beer, which really does add to the ambience. Makes you think back to when times were simpler.
Most tables were for 2-4 people, but there is 1 table in the back that can maybe hold 6.
It looks like they recycled their old menus from the G-Men days. The back half of the menu is taped up with an "X", with big black Sharpie writing saying the food is "not available". Talk about ghetto. We had a good chuckle.
They also have chili and crushed garlic, but unlike Benkei, this stuff isn't refrigerated (which may not be a bad thing). Our garlic container had been mostly cleaned out by the people before us though (the staff should've checked), so we stole a container from the next table over.
I had the RCMP ramen. Yes, they named a bowl of noodles after the same people who impound your car if you go 40 km/h over. I thought it meant it would taste really porky (har har), but nope, it was actually a pleasant spicy tomatoey-type broth. I like how they put a nice little pile of shredded green onion on top of the noodles. The noodles are just like what I remember from G-Men, nice and springy.
They do have other izakaya-type items, but we didn't go for this. Based on the prices (some $6-10 per dish), I can see this adding up really quickly if you're not careful. Can't comment on the taste, but the pictures definitely looked yummy.
One thing here is that tea is NOT free. My friend got charged $1 for a green tea. Good thing I ordered ice water. The tea is an actual tea bag in a cup, which probably explains the additional cost.
It's not the world's best value, but the food is very decent for the price. Can't complain.Listed in: 2011 Ed's Picks

Had to drop a star for a few reasons.
First of all, menu has been completely revamped - far less skewers of delicious animal offal and 'exotic' items and no more cheap oyster deal. Instead, there's a lot more commonplace stuff like fries, ebimayo and ramen. Much more 'Western friendly' menu items now.
The menu is much like Ebisu now (which I'm not a big fan of). My ideal izakaya experience is a lot of drinks, loud noises and tons of delectable salty/fried/grill meat stuff and tapas. Salad? Ramen? No thanks.
But come on, this is Richmond - the land of a billion Hongers - are you saying that there's no demand for beef tongue and chicken hearts? The hell? Being unable to sell grilled random animal parts to Chinese people is like being unable... wait... fuck that... I don't need an analogy for this.
Their house beer is now gone. But Sleeman's Cream Ale is only $4.
Still an alright joint, I suppose. But wish they kept the old menu.Listed in: Late Night Eats in GVRD

Review from Marjorie D.
Vancouver, BC
Butter corn miso ramen, anyone? I decided to order it out of curiosity. I think I was surprised to see the pat of butter sitting atop my soup when I received it. My first thought was, "Hello, heart attack in a bowl!". First thing I did, however, was swish the butter around gently and remove it. Somehow, the butter kept its shape (impressive, yet unappetizing) and put it on a side plate. Lucky I did because that butter taste seemed to be part of the soup already and the butter had barely melted - not sure if the corn in my soup was already drenched in butter to begin with. Despite the butteriness and the thickness of the soup, the noodles, pork and corn were good but it was a little too much for me by the end.
Before the ramen came to our table, we had salmon sashimi. It was fresh sashimi, nothing particularly different from the norm. My dinner buddy had a BBQ Pork shio ramen which, in my opinion, tasted better than my buttered corn concoction. I guess mine wasn't so bad but I probably will order something different next time. Buttered corn seems better as a dish on its own. -

Yeah, this place has gone downhill in quality. I don't really know what happened but they moved places, switching with Manzo a few stalls down.
The menu is nothing special, looks like a typical all-you-can-eat menu, except that it is not all-you-can-eat.
Service was ok. Kind of westernized japanese style. I brought my japanese friend here, and she was not impressed by either the quality of the food or the overall experience.
Pretty much the only people who come here are the wannabe asian big foig gangsters who didn't get the memo that there are better izakayas in town. -

I ate here a few months ago and I totally forgot to write a review. I'm also rarely in Richmond, but when I am and craving izakaya, I'll eat here again.
Last time I had the Bacon wrapped Quail Eggs (bacon + eggs.. you can't go wrong) and the beef tongue (juicy and tender). I didn't eat anything else because I had dinner already. But who can say NO to izakaya??Listed in: Best Japanese

Meh.
This was the first izakaya I had ever been to back in my youngin days. I thought it was the bomb! Alas, as I grew up, I suppose my tastes have changed and I went back for the first time in years and boy was I disappointed.
Nan Chuu is run by the same people as Gyoza King and I LOVE Gyoza King. Last night's dinner was a bit of a disaster.
My favourite dish at Gyoza King the gyu yukke was somewhat bastardized at Nan Chuu. I don't know exactly what was different but the meat just somehow didn't taste the same. The Bacon wrapped Quail Eggs were good but not quite BBQy enough. The sashimi on the seafood salad was not fresh enough and somewhat mushy. I really liked the Unagi rice in the stone bowl though. Forgive my rambling as I try to remember what I ate.
Worst of all were the gigantic fanny bay oysters for a $1.50. I supposed it is my own fault for ordering cheap oysters but these things was huge. I do not like my raw oysters to be so big that i need a knife and fork to eat or more than a bite to chew. Especially if it's fishy!!!
The udon with the roe tasted ketchupy and blah, the clams in asari broth was overcooked. Yeah I think I'm just old, bitter and picky!
Anyways, the service was wonderful, maybe it was because we went quite late and they weren't putting their all in the food. Probably won't be back since I hate going to Richmond anyways. -

Vancouver, BC
Had a big dinner with a my group of good friends, I came in having high expectations due to reviews and the fact that its run by the G-Men family. We had so many different dishes and the ones I enjoyed in particular were: Salmon Yukke, Gyu Yukke, Gyu Tataki, Korokke, Seafood Salad, Yakitori and Bacon-wrapped Quail eggs.
It was all good, if you've been to an Izakaya before those are all staple items. But none of it was fantastic, I think there's just been so many Izakaya's here that chefs have been having to get inventive with their dishes. Nan Chuu serves the basic tried and true recipes. While some of the newer places are making variations on old dishes.
I guess because its my first time here I was expecting a lot more but, well these guys have been around forever. You can't go wrong. But don't expect anything new.
The bad was their cheap $1.50 oysters. We thought that was a deal. The Fanny Bay's were fresh but the were way too big to eat raw. Like the size of my palm. I had 3 and wanted to stop eating that's just too big...none of us could eat more than 2...I was coerced into eating the last one....ugh
PRICE: Fair. Same as all the other Izakaya's, I think we were about $28 per person with a fair share of food.
SERVICE: Nothing special, friendly or memorable. They are there. All business. I like my waitresses friendly though, it helps make for a better night out for everyone :)
SUGGEST: Hmm...there's no problems with coming here, but I don't think I have any reason to come back. There's a lot of competition right now that will go over and above the basic requirements :"( I must be getting old and picky. -
Review from Renee C.
It is places like this in Vancouver that makes Isakaya/Yakitori places in NYC look inferior!
I mean I love everything about this place....and it serves up the most amazing dishes I've had @ any Izakaya I've been to!
OMG! The grilled beef tongue was like butter!!!! and when you dipped it in the mustard, it just added a whole other complexity to it's flavor! YUM!!! This is my FAVORITE!
The Ebi mayo (fried shrimp with special mayo sauce) was awesome although it didn't have the deep fried basket like they have @ Guu...it was still well executed!
The Gyu takaki (beef carpaccio) was so thin and fresh, I could have eaten it all to myself!
I was curious to see what an ochazuke was so I ordered one with Unagi! and wow, it was a piece of unagi over rice and seaweed with broth! I thought this was very good :)
The Tsukune (chicken meatballs) were very tender an juicy, but we made a mistake of gettig it with cheese, I much prefer it without th cheese...but don't get me wrong, I love cheese...it just didn't go well with tsukune.
I also had the Uni Yakko which was pretty fresh and standard and the fried oysters with ponzu...this one was a little bit oily but still yummy.
I like the decor of this place...very serene and modern yet felt authentically Japanese!Listed in: Vancouver, BC!!!!, 5*s

Thank you to a fellow Yelper, my husband & I are so excited to learn G-men ramen is back but under the name of Nan Chuu.
At this "new" location, parking sucks particularly on wkend nights. But as we visited on a Tues night, parking was ample at the back & the restaurant was not packed with no lineup.
Like other Gyzoa King-owned restaurants, they have nice decor and ambience. The menu offers the same set of ramens as before plus a few tapas from the old Nan Chuu, which we might give it a try next time. Price-wise is pretty much the same ax the board. Under $10 for a regular bowl. So this review is solely for their ramens.
We ordered a regular Shyou Tonkotsu (2 pc of chashu) & a bbq Shyou Tonkotsu (basically a regular Shyou Tonkotsu with 6 pc of chashu for a little $ more). Our ramens arrived together at the same time at a reasonable speed. The soup was served hot at the right temp; taste-wise, it had great depth and complexity of flavors, just as we remembered it. Noodles were thick & chewy with a full egg-noodle flavor and ended with a smooth texture on the tongue. Chashu paces were authentically tasty and smooth (not tough or chinese-style like many places); the fat to meat proportion was well balanced, and thickness was reasonable. My only complaint is that the soup was a bit thicker (with a prominent layer of oil on top) than before to our personal liking. We had to skim it off to reduce the unpleasant stuffed feeling that usually happens after having oily food.
Being on the hunt for the best ramen in town after the closing of g-men since June, we believe it is finally over. This time, we hope that they stay and contain to serve great ramens. -

I was a little skeptical about this place after having a bad experience at the old G-Men Ramen in Continental Plaza (long wait followed by a bowl of 90% soup and 10% meat and noodles). Anyways, I had the special (limited supply) Beef Tendon Ae Soba. It's a soupless dish with beef, egg, and noodles. It was pretty tasty. Staff was very friendly but the seating was a bit tight. Parking is an issue - as everyone has already mentioned. All in all, would definitely come back.

Wow, we found this place by accident when we were desperately looking for food at 12:30am in Richmond. Most places that were open until 1am were denying us a table as they insisted it was last call. I opened the door to Nan Chuu and the cashier welcomed us in even though they were going to close in 1/2 hour! :) Great customer service!
The food here is superb. Their robata dishes remind me of Shinsen-Gumi Yakitori! Wagyu beef, order the Wagyu beef! My wife loved the Rice Croquette, which she believes is perfectly prepared. The Chicken Kirage is spot on. Great flavor!! The Shrimp Tempura Udon was very good!
Ambiance in the place is what you'd expect from a traditional Japanese restaurant with great food, cute japanese waitresses, and j-pop in the air. If I lived in Vancouver, i'd be here at least once a week! Recommended! -

Like its popular sister Gyoza King, creative Japanese tapas with good ambience in a small location on Richmond's restaurant strip.
My fave dish has to be the maguro avocado salad. The fried udon was not as good as Guu's, and the miso black cod lacked flavour and was a bit on the dry side. Make sure you have a Kirin to cut through the grease. Price is mid-ranged and equivalent to Hapa, but Guu is still the best Izakaya in town.
One note, I love when the staff steps aside for the customer, i.e. on the way to the bathroom. This is especially important in a long narrow location such as Nan Chuu's. However we were ignored for awhile towards the end of our night, I was getting flashbacks of Italy as we had to ask for our bill 15 minutes after our food was done. -

Finally an Izakaya place comparable to the Guu Vancouver family.
Service: The Nan Chuu staff were friendly and welcoming.
Like the other reviews for Nan Chuu, the dishes were tasty and pleasing (via authentic Japanese chefs). The prices were fair for quality and quantity.
We tried several Robata dishes such as beef tongue (amazingly tender) and Tori kawa (chicken skin) - all were surprisingly tasty. We sampled other dishes: Yakitori, Tsukune Chicken, Uzura Bacon with quail egg (all were pleasing to the palate).
(Try the Robata sampler to get a taste of 5 set items)
The Ishiyaki Unagi tama don was made perfectly and not over-sauced.
Bottomline: I would go back but the Guu family (IMO, is still serves the best Izakya style) -

As a Richmondite, I'm very happy to have a place like Nan Chuu near by. Now I don't have to go down town to enjoy great Izakaya. From the Gyoza King family, the food here is consistently good, and the specials are... Special!
Regular dishes: beef tongue (thin), ebi mayo, tuna/beef tataki, spotted prawn sashimi.
Definitely a place that caters to return customers. -

A friend was in town for 3 hours between flights and wanted different Japanese food, not just sushi. I have had this place recommended, checked yelp and headed over from the airport, I always forget "eat street" until I'm on it, lots of great places. The seafood gyoza were very very good and the grilled sardines big and fat, now for the nonPC part, they only use atlantic salmon because of its consistent quality and availability so if you hate farmed salmon, give it a pass. It is a great Izakaya, head on over.

Review from Steph L.
I've wanted to try Gyoza King for years, but since my mom hates parking downtown I've still never been. So when I found out that Nan Chuu in Richmond is their sister restaurant, I made it my first stop on my last trip to Vancouver. My mom picked me up from the airport and off we went!
I love their modern Japanese décor. The dim lighting really gave it an authentic izakaya vibe. (That, and being greeted loudly by all the chefs and servers in Japanese when we first walked in.) We sat in one of the booths at the back where you have to take your shoes off. With my new obsession with izakaya food, I was happy to see their large menu. Upon careful deliberation (and not wanting to eat too much after landing at 11pm), I narrowed the choices to 10 dishes. (Yup, my mom always lets me order. That's why she's my favourite eating partner!)
We had:
- ANIKMO (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): melt-in-my-mouth goodness! Ponzu sauce balances out the richness
- GRILLED BEEF TONGUE (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): friggin' amazing! So fatty, tender, and flavourful
- GRILLED BEEF SHORTRIB (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): tender and flavourful
- GRILLED LAMB CHOP (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): very tender but needs more seasoning
- GRILLED MISO BLACKCOD (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): another melt-in-my-mouth dish, great miso flavour and I loved the super crispy skin
- GRILLED EGGPLANT (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): only liked it with the bonito flakes, flavourless otherwise
- SALMON YUKKE NORI WRAP (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): had me reaching for my tea because it was so salty, not much flavour otherwise
- TONKOTSU WONTON SOUP (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): wonton skin too thick and the shrimp wasn't very succulent, soup was decent but reminded me of Nissin tonkotsu instant noodle soup mix (good for Nissin I suppose...)
- YAKI ONIGIRI OCHAZUKE (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): I was not a fan of this at all. The broth was salty with no other flavours and the once-crispy onigiri turned soggy after soaking in it
- YAKI ONIGIRI (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...): I ordered this after I tried the ochazuke to see if it's better not soaked in soup. It wasn't much of an improvement - still salty, but at least it was crispy
Though the dishes were hit and miss I'd come back again - but only after flying in because it's opened late and is close to the airport! -
