I come here at least once a week to load up on bread (try the walnut apple loaf, incredible). Also amazing is their premade pizza dough and banana loaf, as well as their daily dollar bags of broken(yet delicious) cookies. Grocery store bread seems like overpriced cardboard in comparison.

I've popped in here a number of times looking for a sweet treat. I haven't been that impressed with their bread before, having tried a number of options, but really, most of the time I come in here I'm looking for some sugar. Give momma her sugar!
Their cookies are pretty good, and great options to pick up to bring to a party or a meeting. (Everyone likes the girl who brings cookies.) I have also quite enjoyed their nanaimo bars before.
The staff are young, and very nice. They didn't even get mad at me when I accidentally let in a pigeon into their store! Oops.
Tip* They also have a section of damaged goods, cake and tarts etc that may have been a little mangled. Still taste good though...so if you're broke, that's a good place to look! -

Fresh Bread? Check!
Assortment of Pastries? Check!
Cheap Prices? Check!
Then I'm sold!
After coming back from Croatia where baked goods were $1.50 and loaves of bread were $1, its' hard to settle back into Toronto in the hopes that prices are going to be anywhere near what I saw in Europe.
However, stumbling into Market Bakery - it was such a relief to smell a whiff of fresh baked bread, a large assortment too, and display cases of cookies, bars, cakes, and more.
I got a strawberry rhubarb slice to go and it held up all the way until I brought it to his office for lunch. It was tasty and had a nice tartness to it. I could not complain on the price or the taste.
There will be plenty more trips to come! -

I can't speak for the entire selection of breads, pastries and sweets at My Market Bakery ... but ... I can speak volumes about the Montreal-style bagels.
They make both poppy seed and sesame - and both are great! Fresh batches every morning. Some of my friends buy them by the dozen to keep in the freezer. I prefer to pass by each morning after picking up my morning coffee and get one fresh. -

Don't miss if you are in the area to grab a couple treats for the walk. The shortbread cookies are perfect. The banana bread was hidden in the corner and delicious while it lasted.

Love the Kensington Market- but bread isn't the strong point. My Market Bakery has airy portuguese rolls, whole wheat loafs, and a variety of other oily breads. What I don't see is the crusty sourdough and baguettes that I crave with my cheese and as sandwiches.
I don't tend to buy cookies or cakes or pies, so I can't comment on those. But the rare time I thought I'd splurge I thought the stuffed bagels looked decadent- not worth it.
Only reason I come here these days is for the Montreal bagels, which run out early. -

Even with Cobbs next door, I continue to shop at My Market Bakery for a great selection at really good prices!
I'm always drawn in by the various dinosaur and airplane shaped gingerbread cookies - I LOVE gingerbread, and those are pretty good! Their gluten-free brownies are also good!
The bread is really what makes My Market Bakery. Whole wheat baguettes are soft and tasty, and they have a wide-variety of other breads (including loaves), my personal favorite being the olive and rosemary loaf!
If I'm being totally honest with myself, I'd say that the price is really what attracts me to this bakery. I wouldn't say anything there is THE BEST EVER, but it is good, and combined with the price it makes it... very good! However, it is definitely worth checking out if you're in the Kensington area! -

The chocolate-pecan tart and the other buttery-based bar I got here were passably good, a term that here means "kind of generic and sweet tasting with hints of whatever they're supposed to contain, but really not all that memorable." It was also cheap. But seeing as I had just been to a Chinese bakery, $1.50 for a large chunk of tart seemed reasonable at best.
That being said, this place definitely puts the tarts and bars that you'd find at any ordinary cafe/bakery to shame, price wise and portion wise. -
Review from Elaine G.
I love the spudagel here (a potato bagel, more like a flaky croissant with potatoes), as well as the portuguese egg tarts. The French apple custard tart was also excellent.
Great selection, excellent prices. The day-old selection of breads and sweets is also great and they taste just as good. -

As for bakeries in Kensington, this place was really the only place until Cobbs moved in as well. Cobbs has different stuff for much higher prices. So My Market Bakery will continue to get my patronage for as long as I continue to shop in Kensington.
The egg bread is absolutely fantastic. I think they put something special in it because when it's fresh the loaf never has a chance to cool before it gets crammed into my pie-hole.
The apple-walnut bread is an absolute favourite in my house too. Whenever I leave my doggie alone for too long, he'll grab it and eat the whole thing.
They do have some decent croissants for only $1 each. They are most of the time flaky without too much heaviness. However later in the day I'm often disappointed by the lack of croissants. (They often sell out of them)
They offer some pastries too including cookies, cakes, biscotti, tarts and bars. Avoid the "day old" if you see they have brownies. The other day-olds however can be good depending on what they are. (cheap buttertart ftw!)
My only real complaint aside from the clearly obvious overload of carb-o-rific breadstuffs is that they often have a limited selection of darker and whole grain loaves. Probably because they often sell out before I get there. -

If I lived any closer to My Market Bakery, I'd be in serious trouble... delightful sugar-buzz, Diabetic-coma, carbohydrate-overload, rolling instead of walking kind of trouble. Darned good thing it's a 4k round trip!
Cobbs bread is a few doors down... but honestly, why bother? Woohoo, I love shopping at a bakery CHAIN! Right...
Bread- excellent. Try the light rye- they'll slice it fresh for you.
Bagels- top-notch. I'm a sucker for the Montreal-style ones.
Desserts- ... my oh my. Nanaimo bars like they ought to be (not overwhelmed by sugar)! Cream horns are a sight to behold.
Four-star rating because the service is hit-and-miss. The last couple times I went in, there was a particular girl working there whom... I really just wanted to ask, "Is it THAT miserable to work here?" Lord, woman! I'm asking you to grab me a couple of cookies, not pick up my dog's shit!
One last thing- bring cash. There's an ATM across the way at Kensington Cafe, but it will charge you through the nose to withdraw. -

This place is addictive!
After I discovered this concoction: focaccia bagel....i was hooked. It is the blending of two wonderful worlds: the italian focaccia and a new york bagel. How could you go wrong? I would and never will share this when I buy it. Yes, it`s that good.
There`s a fair selection of breads to choose from at a very inexpensive fair. It`s really worth making the trip for their incredible breads.
I have to say, in comparison, their cookies just aren`t as good as their breads but you know what, I`ll still eat them. I haven`t tried all their wares but enough to say, `go for the bread!`` -

After being a long-time Cobs Bakery gal (see my review of the Kensington Market location), I went a few doors west on Baldwin and gave My Market Bakery a try for my weekly loaf and monthly buns. I have been in on and off through the years for various treats, but have in the last few weeks been a regular patron (and must say am quite glad Cobs in Kensington disappointed me so!).
More often than not, I saunter in in the later half of the day, 4 o'clock onward. There is always a few regular white or whole wheat loafs, buns, and bagels of fresh baked goodness at that time, but until this past weekend, I was unaware of the sheer bread-ey goodness that welcomes patrons earlier in the day! I finally managed to make my way in before noon and almost couldn't find my usual whole wheat loaf for all the fresh baked goodness! The selection is also amazing: french loafs, olive bread, fig and nut bread, Calabrese rolls, dinner rolls, bagels of all sorts, muffins, funny torpedo shaped loafs. It was a carbaholic's dream!
The service is friendly, but not pushy. The cashiers wait at the register for patrons to acquire their goods, or mosey down the sweets for those who look especially interested. And my bread is always sliced with a smile. The only draw: occasionally it takes a few moments for them to finish their conversation before they acknowledge me, but it's usually no more than literally moments.
The product is delicious - the bread denser than I'm used to, but not so dense it reminds me of when my dear Mum tried to make bread with expired yeast. The buns are massive and airy, a complete dichotomy to the bread loafs. And I usually have to use great restraint to avoid getting a bar or treat of some sort, but they look incredible. Some day, after a very, very long run, I will take down their carrot cake and/or nanaimo bar in seconds flat. And the price? Incredible; perhaps the best part. A loaf of whole wheat bread is $1.89. Seriously. Seriously!!! -

This place actually does feel like *my* market bakery. It's pretty close and has a large selection of tasty treats. Importantly, it's also cheap!
Great breads and fresh chewy bagels with a large selection of croissants/chocolate croissants etc. You get the best selection if you get there early-including my downfall: the cinnamon crunchies. $1.25 buys you a buttery, sugary cinnamon bun which is utterly addictive. I've never managed to get it home without attacking it out of the bag en route. Tip: they keep them in the same cabinet as the croissants etc over on the right.
The refrigerated display houses various little slices and cakes. They're all really competitively priced-most in the $1-2 range. Sadly, their cupcakes didn't impress and I haven't bought them again. The Naimo bar was tasty though.
Service is usually efficient and sometimes even with a smile.
Love this place as an antidote to the overpriced and/or mass produced stuff in bakeries elsewhere. It feels like real food!Listed in: Diet busting bakeries (Toronto…

This place had a very wide variety of cakes, breads, muffins and bagels. (even the flatter Canadian kind) I opted for a Coconut square, with a cookie like base, with some raspberry past spread between.
That was only $1.50 and I thought well worth it for the size.
All the prices seem very reasonable here, and it's worth it just for the smell of walking in here. The people were very nice. -

Great neighbourhood feel at this little bakery, just a few doors down from the more well-known Cobbs. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in here -- the smell of freshly baked bread envelopes you and makes you want to eat everything in sight. The selection is good and the prices are really fair. I got a whole grain focaccia for only $1 and it was nice and soft. I have also tried the broccoli & cheese croissant which was makes a delicious breakfast on the go. I will have to come back to try their bagels.

For years, I never bought anything from this bakery. Seeing as I judge my pastries by their cover, My Market felt to the bottom of the must-try list. After all, their squares and cookies always looked dry and incredibly unappetizing.
However, I was desperate one day and made the bold move to purchase a square this year: it really wasn't as bad as I thought. I still don't buy pastries from them, mainly because I've found the one thing that's brought me back to this store on a weekly basis -- the bread collection. I've had baguettes, egg bread, whole grain, and oregano cheese loaves, and they've all been great -- good texture. I believe I also fund their pizza dough maker's salary, what with all of the homemade dough balls I get from them.
Merely writing about this place makes my belly expand tenfold and makes makes me wonder why people dare to buy overpriced Dempster and Wonder factory loaves. -

So apparently I have been missing out...
For some reason until this weekend the only bakery I had been into in Kensington was Cobbs - nice place, expensive, kindof lacking variety.
Walking into My Market Bakery was amazing!
I haven't been impressed by a bakery in a while (I am still missing over-priced Pan Chancho in Kingston) by My Market Bakery brought a smile to my face - so much variety, inspiring ideas for baked goods, and to boot the prices aren't hard on my student budget :)
Since it was early and this was one of our first stops on a meandering walk through downtown, my friend and I decided to just split something to give the place a try. We went with a Mexican Coffe (or mocha?) cookie. For the flat price of $1 we left happy. Overall, the cookie had a great flavour and was generous in size. The only disappointment was that it was rather crunchy - and not really in an its-supposed-to-be-that-way kind of thing.
I will likely be back to the bakery to try something else soon - but if my purchase isn't fresh on my next visit, I will probably only be returning for a third time for the sake of baking inspiration rather than craving satisfaction. -

Nice bakery with a nice variety of baked goods and breads!
A loaf of whole wheat runs you only $1.89 and they even offer to slice it for you. Much cheaper than factory breads at the grocery stores. And it's fresh! Cannot go wrong!
They also sell cookies, squares and tarts that all looked very yummy-scrumbos! -

The market bakery is pretty great.
The highlight? One dollar day old grab bag. Get a little mix of dinner rolls, bagels and bread for all your eating needs.
Everything else is really reasonably priced and the selection is great. -

Who doesn't love a store specifically for carbs? I feel like it's a little piece of heaven.
This is one of my regular stops during the weekend. I usually pick up some of the montreal bagels or a baguette (much cheaper than Cobbs).. and sometimes for fun I buy their pizza dough which is brilliant.
The staff has always been friendly and every pastry I have bought from there has been incredible.
If I could give a venue 6 stars I would.. afterall this place has a great staff, amazing selection and some of the cheapest pricing. -

I always enjoy the look of pure joy & delight when I take my Italian boyfriend into this little gem of a bakery.
I swear he was born with a bun in his mouth!
His eyes light up, when I ask him what he wants to get!
So much cheaper than Cobbs, and they have a broader selection of breads, buns & sweet yummies.
The selection is actually substantial, even later in the afternoons' on the weekend, unlike a lot of other bakeries, which are all picked over & practically empty. (ie. Cobbs)
A loaf of fresh dark rye was $2.73. -

If there is a more wonderful smell than a room full of freshly baked bread I've never smelt it. My Market Bakery is how all shopping should be. Within their hallowed walls they have hundreds of loaves of bread that were freshly baked that day so that I could eat them. The store is small but it is packed to the rafters with loaf after loaf of different bread that you want to try, but you can only carry so much. I personally went for the Rosemary Potato flour loaf because I have a strong affinity for Rosemary and it was even better than it sounds. My Market Bakery is exactly like what you imagine a bakery to be, and for that reason I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to have fresh hand crafted bread that they will enjoy eating.

This place has a wide variety of goods. It offers a nice selection of breads made in-store as well as some ethnic breads that are baked elsewhere. It is best to go in the morning hours to get the best selection, especially on weekends. They also offer sweets. While their cookie selection dissapoints, they do offer some interesting bars to sample.
The service is almost always courteous.
This bakery has one of the more robust selections in terms of downtown bakeries. -
Review from Cheuk S.
This is a pretty cool place to visit for some finger pastry foods. Couple of my friends came here to snack up on a few pastries, but you can also see a large selection of home made fresh bread. It's definitely worth a visit if you are in the area as you can stop by here plus a few other shops on the same street to try other pastry and cheese shops, and then stop by a coffee shop to liquid hydration after all the pastry you had.

When you walk in, the smell of baked goods hits you full force. You may or may not start to drool. We go here ever week as part of our grocery shopping. For a treat, it's a tie between a yummy spinagels & their luscious rum-balls. There's something for everyone here - they even have pizza dough (white & whole wheat) for the DIY in all of us.

Ran in here real quick after a great breakfast at Shai's. My lady was looking for something a little sweet for our car ride back to Chicago. The service was great and the selection of baked goodies was excellent.

I need to knock this back to a 4. The bread is still good at a very reasonable price but its not reasonable to have a 5 rating where I wouldn't buy product covering 75% of the space. Still... go for the bread.

A Kensington Market gem. Real, fresh bread at a reasonable price--no five dollar olive loaves here! The best whole wheat baguette you can get, and homespun squares, cookies and pies, Canadian style straight up. Tip: get the cod dumpling and then go down to Louie's coffee for an espresso for a perfect mid-market excursion break.

i've been frequenting this bakery for years and usually stop in to get a selection of squares, bagels, rye bread and on occasion their pizza dough whenever i'm in the area. usually i'm very happy with my purchases but today i found a pubic hair baked into my coconut raspberry square. while i do recognize accidents happen this, needless to say, was extremely off putting. i won't be returning in the near future (it's going take a long time to get over this, if i ever do).
