I deliberately held off on this review until this one... my 100th review (yay!)  It's my favourite ice cream shop in Calgary, and It's name is aptly well earned.  This shop definately puts any Baskin Robbins or Dairy Queen to shame with rows upon rows of virtually every conceivable flavour without going into the savory side of things (thank heavens... I really don't want to try say... turducken flavoured ice cream).

Very much modeled in the inside to be just like an old fashioned ice cream shop, I keep finding myself utterly transfixed at the names and colours and potential tastes I have yet to embark.

Just a word to the wise... bring CASH.  Don't use your debit and they don't accept credit cards.  Also, take the time to REALLY look through all the decor on the walls.  It's an interesting trip down memory lane.

While the ice cream is standard, the prices are high and they gouge even more when paying with interac as they add on 0.12 cents and aren't part of any bank network which means your bank will charge you $1-1.50 for each transaction. Thats an expensive ice cream cone and you'd be better off going elsewhere. It's a racket that I won't support, so I walked out and won't return until the management puts in new POS system!

Ice Cream is likely from Foothills Creamery, which you can get at most ice cream places.

Stop supporting retailers that choose these POS systems that charge additional fees to access your own money to pay them!

This just might be my favoUrite ice cream shop...!

At around 8pm on my best friend's birthday, I decided she needed to celebrate with some ice cream. We knew Yelp would have some awesome suggestions for us, and we were super happy to find that My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe was open until 10:30. I find most places in Calgary close early, so this was great!

There was a huge crowd when we got there; everyone was milling about with their giant ice cream cones. We stood in line for about ten minutes before we got to the till.

The store itself is really run-down looking, both on the inside and the outside, I thought. Not very cute! Also I wish there was a list of flavours because I couldn't read them from the line. Thankfully there were two of us so we were able to switch off and take turns going to look at the tons of flavours they had. There are FIVE freezers full of ice cream...yum.

Every single person who worked there was friendly and cheerful. The girl working at the till asked us how we were doing, which was nice considering how non-stop busy they were.

I chose grape float flavour, and mmm. It was perfect! Some of the best ice cream I've had recently. They give you a HUGE scoop, which was much appreciated as it was delicious.

Four stars because you have 5 freezers full of ice cream. And if there's something I love more than cookies or chocolate, it's ice cream.

On the exterior, My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe could use some work. The well-weathered awnings could use a touch up, and a coat of paint on the benches and tables outside wouldn't hurt either. But it's still early in the season, maybe it's on the list.

The interior is a lot more fun. I took a few minutes to explore the old school memorabilia on outer wall and wondered what a large statue of a cow was doing on the top of the piano? A sign in the front of the shop says there's music every Sunday evening from 7-10. As much fun as it was to have ice cream for lunch, the music with my cone sounds much more intriguing.

The debit machine was out of order when I went. I'm glad they taped a big sign to the cash register so I could check my purse for change before ordering my chocolate brownie ice cream cone.

Single scoops are $3.50, but it's a hearty scoop and on par with most ice cream shops.

Tip: You'll need to pay before you order, but I advise deciding what flavour you want before you pay. There are oodles of flavours to choose from and on a busy day you'll be holding up the line.

PS... Why isn't there a "u" in favourite in the business name?

I'm surprised I'm only the second person to review this place...but let me tell you how cool it is!

The inside is just awesome...you'll feel like you've been taken back in time. And sometimes there's a dude playing the piano...every Sunday night I believe for a couple of hours?

Their selection is awesome - they have some super delicious ice cream and there's always a big line (but don't be scared away...it moves fast).

And they only accept cash...at least the last time I went they did so make sure to have some on you!

Spring/summer is coming...you should definitely check this place out :)

WHY am I the only person to ever review My Favourite Ice Cream Shoppe?!?!?!? Well let me start by telling you that it IS my favourite ice cream shop in Calgary.

The minute you walk in you're transported into an 'ice cream world'. With ice cream memorabilia EVERYWHERE, an ouber friendly staff, crowds of avid ice cream eaters, and a grand piano upon which you can earn your ice cream, My Favourite Ice Cream Shoppe is a gem in our city.

Established in 1981, and serving Calgarians 80 different flavours of ice cream (Mud Pie, Kit Kat, Bat Black Licorice and Wet Paint, just to name a few), this place sets the ice cream bar VERY high.

If you're not an ice cream fanatic, then you can indulge in chocolate covered bananas, floats, milkshakes, malts, hot dogs, pizza pops, Jamaican Meat Patties, popcorn, pastries or burritos. Something for EVERYONE.

What's the moral of the story you ask? Spring is here - GET HERE (Doors open April 1st).

I have lots of great things to say about this place, and just a couple not so great things.  I came across this place while reading my Weekly Yelp! It was my birthday and it was hot outside and I thought the perfect way to finish off the evening would be perhaps to go for an ice cream cone! Usually I make the long trek out to McKay's but I wanted to stay local and I am always looking to try something new.
The not so great things would be the line. WOW the line. I waited in line for about 20 minutes (Emma says it was 10. It so wasn't, it was 20. It was hot and sticky and I really didn't want to be in a line for 20 minutes. However, I had read in previous reviews that the line can be ridiculously long so I came mentally prepared for this. I also see that they used to have a selection of old school candy, etc. but none of this was there when I was there.  It made the shop look really empty and bare, and all of these empty bins along the wall made it look like the shop was going out of business. I also didn't care for the interior décor at ALL. Creepy old Disney figurines, it all looked like it was purchased at a garage sale.
However I do have some really great things to say about this place. The service was fantastic; everyone I talked to here not only wore cute old school diner uniforms and greeted you with a smile and a friendly demeanor. The prices are really reasonable and the portions are really big. This is a huge deal for me. Bang for your buck, it's VERY important.  And the actual taste of the ice cream was delicious. I had peaches and cream and it was awesome. I will definitely go back, it's worth the wait in the line and the tour through the creepy decorations.

Went here for a treat for the hubs bday. It was good ice cream but they are very serious about their ice cream! Not super friendly, especially since it wasnt very busy at all. So So experience. I think next time we will go back to Lics! Same ice cream pretty much, but friendlier people for the most part.
