Great food but sometimes a long wait :(

I've had a doner from Mustafas' a couple of times now and was fortunate to only have to wait 15 minutes the first few times. The longest I waited was 45 minutes (!) but I must say that it was still worth it.

I love how they take so much care to make your 2.90 Euro sandwich. My boyfriend on the other hand thinks this is ridiculous and they should hurry up since there's a line with a 45 minute wait.

I'm a big skeptic of kebabs in Europe. Or anywhere outside the Middle East.

I have to say this came close enough. Not quite, but close. Pretty good, but the queue is insane.

It was also the first time I'd seen vegetarian kebabs (sorry, I'm from a carnivorous part of Asia). Apparently they are good. May I never find out.

Good things come to those who wait.

5 stars for food.  Minus one, because I'm impatient and the wait is sometimes never ending. Thank goodness Vanille & Marille is around the corner so I can have dessert first while I'm cursing everyone in front of me.

Mustafas is one of my favorite places to grab a bite to eat while in Berlin, and I've never been disappointed. It's probably one of the best döner kebap places I've been to; though, I really do like Schlemmerbuffet. The ingredients are fresh, the food is prepared right in front of you, and it's all affordable. The line can become rather long, but I never had an issue with waiting. In my opinion, service is pretty quick. This is definite must-go if you're in Berlin.

Let's be clear about something.  If you are visiting Berlin and you find Mustafas, stuff it everywhere on your person. One in each sock, a little vegetable delight shoved down the underpants, and rub a few morsels into your facial hair so it will cling to unruly strands for later. No facial hair? No problem. Horomone therapy is but a small price to pay to tuck away an extra pittance of this stuff.

My advice: Try to eat so much of it that you come to hate it. Otherwise the longing will persist. You will thank me when a seemingly endless expanse of space is separating you from this veggie-roasted ambrosia. Oh you clever potatoes, you mysterious mix of spices, you cruel hint of mint!  How good can it really be? I left Berlin nearly 6 months ago, and still experience bi-weekly cravings. That good.

True, you will wait in line for at least half an hour. But the waiting is the ritual, and as a wise old Greek aunt once told me "it's good to want." And at only 2 euros 50, waiting and wanting never felt so good, or so well rewarded.

YUMMY. while it was the only kebap i had my entire trip it was delicious!! the feta cheese really did it for me. their venue is SMALL, 3 items, one vegetarian, but i'm not complaining lol. it's a stand, and there's three tables you can stand around. the wait wasn't that long when we went, and while the workers probably don't speak english they were SUPER nice. for less than 3 euros only, i say do it!

WOW!!  So glad I did a yelp search for food in Germany or else I would have never found this place.  Thanks fellow yelpers! :)

Probably the best food we ate in Europe for only the price of 2.90 euro for a huge Hänchen Döner.  I didn't know this when we first tried it, but eventually found out that Hähnchen is chicken.

To get here, take the U-banh to Mehringdamm station.  Once you exit the subway and you climb the steps to the street, you will smell something delicious.  That something delicious is Mustafa's, right in front of your eyes.  Hubby actually noticed the stand as I was mesmerized by the smell so I didn't even notice it until he mentioned it.

We came in the afternoon, almost lunch time.  Since we just had breakfast, hubby and I shared one Hänchen Döner.  Line was not long at all!  The Hänchen Döner is a bread (thicker than pita bread), slapped with some delicious looking white and red sauce, filled with the Hänchen meat, deliciously grilled veggies - potato, peppers, onions, eggplant, zucchini, etc, topped with fresh veggies like cucumbers, tomato, onions, lettuce, feta cheese, topped with a squirt of lemon juice to finish it off.  Oh my goodness...I salivate thinking about this doner.  It's so delicious!

Once we bit into the sandwich, I had regrets of having to share with the hubby, because I wanted my own sandwich!  =P  It was that good.

They don't really speak English (at least I don't think they do), so I just kinda pointed.   Their menu is small - Hänchen Döner, Veggie doner, or the durum (which is a wrap, like a burrito).  I just pointed to #1.

We loved it so much that we came back at night on the same day!  At night, lines are really long.  I stood in line for a while, eagerly waiting to order my own sandwich.  I was disappointed that they ran out of the chicken, only veggie, so we left.  But in hindsight, I should've just got the veggie sandwich because I love grilled veggies and the sandwich was that good.

On our last day in Germany, hubby and I came back and we each got our own sandwich!  Yum!!

If I ever visit Berlin again, this would definitely be my first stop.

HIGHLY recommended if you're ever in Berlin.

In Berlin's still-nascent Yelpland, this kiosk is rated the best place to eat in the city. Hey, that's no major shocker since San Francisco's best-rated eatery is neither Gary Danko nor Acquerello but the Codmother Fish and Chips shack on Fisherman's Wharf. Yelpers as a whole are bargain hunters for a square meal, and Mustafa's definitely offers a deal if you don't mind a bit of a queue, mostly made up of hipsters and workaholics at the 10PM hour when the place is bustling like crazy. I happened upon it only because I finished my virginal currywurst experience at Curry 36 on the same block and was on my way back to the U-Bahn station.

Lo and behold, I recognized Mustafa's from my Yelp iPhone app and thought well, maybe I should have a second "dinner" and try one of their döners. Since I don't read German much less speak it, it was hard to make out what the menu choices were. Customers seem to blurt out something, and the two guys in the cart go into automatic pilot stuffing the pita bread. I immediately saw what looked to be chicken and just pointed out that I wanted the same thing the previous guy got in my best Helen Keller impersonation. What I got in about thirty seconds flat was the Hänchen Döner for about 2.90 Euros, a relative steal compared to everything else in Berlin.

It was basically a three-course meal in a toasted pita that was a little too thick and chewy for my taste. There were shards of grilled chicken, cucumbers, marinated eggplant, zucchini, red peppers, tomatoes, roasted potatoes, avocado, red onion, and feta cheese (see photos). It was ridiculously huge especially since I just had a currywurst and pommes frites as an appetizer. I ended up eating half of it and desperately packaging the rest for a meal the next day. It was pretty good much like a Primanti Brothers sandwich with the fries stuffed inside. Understand my platinum standard for street food is still the 53rd and 6th Halal Cart in New York. This ain't close.

FOOD - 3 stars...a solid, overstuffed döner undermined by that toasted pita and a few too many ingredients competing with each other
    AMBIANCE - 2.5 stars...it's a kiosk after all...good luck finding a seat to eat
SERVICE - 3.5 stars...fast but not very communicative to foreigners like me
TOTAL - 3 stars...hey, if you're still hungry after your currywurst, why not?

Never had a doner before, so we'll rate Mustafa's verson on an absolute aesthetic scale: IT ROCKS. Waited about 15 minutes, so what? Would have been less except the guy in front of me ordered 13 sandwiches! Good ingredients, expertly assembled (that is, every ingredient in every bite -- very important for a sandwich) and cheep, cheep, cheep. We don't have street food in the UK, so you spoiled New Yorkers can whine all you want, we loved it -- at LEAST as good as the taco trucks on Bedford Ave.

ABSOLUTELY amazing.  The first night we waited 1.5 hours since they had to put up a new meat rack to cook.  Thinking that it might be a bit too hyped up (while in line), we branched off to get some currywurst to nibble on.  Luckily we didn't get filled up on that because the durum and doner from Mustafas was amazing.  It is the perfect blend of chicken, veggies, and sauce.

As a matter of fact, it was so good that on the day we were leaving Berlin, we made a special trip just to get it one more time.  All four of us that went to Berlin and experienced this have agreed that if we can get the recipe down, we are going to quit our day jobs and start up shop in New York.  Watch out.

I now understand why the kebap, a food product of Turkish origin, is a staple streetfood commodity in a Germany. It is probably because of Mustafa's.

He popped my durum cherry. Everyone's first experience should be as good as this one. It was so good, I came back for more.

Jonathan L (review below) was one of my travel partners on our 3 day Berlin trip. I am writing to confirm that we did indeed try to recreate Mustafa's work of art (a careful and meticulous balance of a complexity of culinary components) in my kitchen. I scoured the web for ingredients, compiled and cooked to the best of my ability, but alas, failed to compete with the masterpiece that is Mustafa's durum kebap.

I drool thinking about it.  I dream about it. I now look down on any other durum/kebap made by the hands of Mustafa (er, rather, his minions).

Mustafa, I want to find you so I can either 1) marry you so you can make me durums and donors everyday 2) start a business to bring you to NY.

53rd and 6th has NOTHING on you guys. Mark my words.

I had to wait 20 minutes in rainy weather to get this kebab, and I hate waiting. So being somewhat grumpy, I was not really in the best frame of mind to enjoy my food. And that being said, the Hänchen Döner I had here was simply the BEST DÖNER I HAVE HAD.

Waiting in line for such a long time, it's easy to just stare at the pile of chicken meat roasting and marinating in its juices as it rotates around. The chicken is thus fresh, and it's showered with some juicy dark marinade (or vinegar) right when it's sliced out. But the döner is really more than just the meat: The bread is toasted slightly more crispy than other places. I got my kebab "mit alles" - so I had all 3 sauces (kräuter, knoblauch, and scharf) slathered onto the bread. The meat was heaped in, and then some of their famous roasted veggies - zucchini, carrot, potatoes. Then the fresh salad is piled on - lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onions (all of your choice) and some mint (?). Topped all off with a squeeze of lemon to really release all the flavors.

Mustafas Gemüse Kebap has really perfected the recipe for the döner, and its continued popularity attests to this! If you're in Berlin, brave the line and try it!

Unbelievable. Believe the hype. Everything tastes so fresh and flavorful. Wow. A couple dollars and you get a gigantic beast of a kebab filled with grilled veggies, including potatoes, dill, mint, feta, fresh veggies, special spreads and sauces and of course, the meat. Unreal. I risked getting E.coli to eat this thing. (For real, at the time you weren't allowed to eat cucumbers, tomatoes, or lettuce, which this kebab had all of the above).

There will be a line, but deal with it. It's worth it. You must come here!

It's been a year since I spent a semester abroad in Berlin and thinking about Mustafas Kebap still makes me salivate.

I ate a llooottt of döner while I was in this fine city but none of the places were as awesome as Mustafas. You can get an amazing veggie or chicken döner for three euro (Freakin gut und gunstig). I wouldn't recommend the durum döner - the bread is sooo much better!

When my sisters and my boyfriend were visiting me for a week, we ate at Mustafas twice at their request. There are usually lines at this little street stand but it's totally worth waiting. Their website actually includes a live video feed so you can check out how long you might have to wait.

The chicken döner included beautifully cooked chicken, a sauce of your choice (I always got yogurt and hot) deep fried vegetables, feta cheese, and a fresh squeeze of lemon.
It's a really really genius combination of heavy-ish meat and fried goodness with vegetables, cheese, and citrus.

Grab a cold beer at the liquor store on the corner next to Curry 36 to enjoy with your döner. Perfect.

Everyone at the hostel where I am staying raved on and on about this place. I don't get it. It was nothing special.

I waited in line 20 minutes, meh no big deal I've waited 15 for coffee before, no problem.

I have had Döner before when I spent a year near Bremen as a poor teen and had Döner 2-3 times a week. I loved it then and I've been waiting until I came back to Germany to get a good Döner... I was disappointed. I'm used to the lamb/beef ones, but I thought "Hey, these Berliners know what they're talking about." They only have chicken Döner at Mustafa's... Okay... I got one with everything on it which I didn't know would turn it into a meat salad sandwich. Lame. Not impressed.

***If you are looking for a different kind of Döner then this is your place. If you are expecting it to be like other Döner but SUPER tasty then don't go here.

If the wait is greater than 30mins, don't do it.

    Echt mein Lieblings Döner.

I lived in Germany for 4.5 months and during that time I ate a lot of Döner.(And gained 10 lbs doing so). However Mustafas is unlike any other Döner I have ever had...it is like a gourmet version of a Döner. Amazing. Perhaps it is the addition of the vegetables, or the sauce they squirt on the chicken as they cut it? or perhaps the feta-like cheese which they do not charge extra for(Other places a Döner mit Käse(with cheese) runs you 50 more cents.)

You can also skip the chicken and go totally vegetarian.

I also tried the Dürüm. Also Tasty if you prefer a wrap to bread.

I discovered Mustafas because I was staying at the Hostel right next door, and everytime I would walk by the line would be down the street so I just had to try it. I am glad I did.

Seating is at a minimum, but there are planters just down the block you can sit on.

Conveniently located just outside the Mehringdamm U-Bahn stop, this place is a must if you are in Berlin.

After my first currywurst at nearby Curry 36, I didn't want the party to end so continued to Mustafas where I couldn't resist getting a vegetable kebap for the road. A bit overkill on the dill, but that's more a matter of my own taste I'd say. However, if you're not down with dill, consider yourself warned.

The kebap, heaving with vegetables, held up well on the trip back to my hotel and its visible deliciousness even caused one person to approach me as I ate to ask where I'd procured it.

Mustafas Gemüse Kebap is a bite of Berlin that both vegetarians and non-vegetarians will appreciate and best of all, it won't set you back too many €s!

Seriously the best doener in Berlin. I used to live 30 seconds from here and it was awesome. Wirklich das beste in Berlin, total lecker.

Go here for literally the best doener in Berlin, and while you are there check out the rest of this part of the city. Down the road there is a kicker bar with cheap beer, kind of goth/metal theme but awesome.

Also a good cinema near here.

Best doener in all of Berlin. Hands down. Prepare to wait in line for at least 15-20 minutes any time of the day/night. You won't regret it. Mustafas is never a let down and the taste is always fresh. Chicken doeners will cost you about 3 EUR and veggie ones for slightly cheaper.

For those of you who hate cilantro, I apologize because you are missing one of the finest doeners Berlin has to offer.

Although there are not many places to eat, there a couple standing tables and a ledge where you can sit and enjoy the delicacy that is now in your mouth.

We had to change trains three times and endure a 50 minute wait in line, but it was totally worth it! This place has by far the best doner kebab I have ever had! The sandwiches are huge and stuffed with lots of goodies. And it is dirt cheap! I think I may have to kidnap Mustafa and bring him back to the States, but if I did I'm sure all the Berliners would declare war on us. If you eat at just one place in Berlin, make this the place!

Excellent doener, and I say that as a Kalbfleisch fan.  I was surprised at how good a the chicken doener can be.  It must be those delicious grilled veggies (incl. potatos!) mixed in with the meat.  A Kreuzberg fixture, Mustafa's is worth waiting in line for.  And if you are still hungry afterwards, you can always step over 15 feet to Curry 36 for another Berlin staple, the currywurst!

I've sampled a large number of Döner Kebab places in Berlin, and I have to concur that this is the best of all of them. Which is surprising, since they only make Hänschen (chicken) and Gemüse (vegetarian) Döner, as opposed to the more traditional make-sure-you-can-see-the-layers-so-you-can-be-sur e-it-actually-came-from-an-animal lamb / beef Döner. The chicken is great, but I've entirely switched over to the vegetarian Döner now because Its. Just. That. Good. While back home, I dream of my next visit to Berlin and Mustafa's. Why can't we have one of these in San Francisco?
