Review from Phil T.
Everything was solid across the board, but for the pricing of dish $27 for excellent shredded pork, great veggies, and a handful of gnocchi's, it kinda seems kinda high. By no means is it far off(only a couple of bucks) but come on pulled pork is not expensive. It was really tasty the brussel sprouts merried all the flavors together perfectly! Everyone at my table really enjoyed their meal as well. I do really appreciate places like this, menu changes, and offer different types of meats/cuts. Would love to go back and try the charcuterie plates, but balla on a budget when traveling on a work budget. :(
Also the IPA they have on the menu was a really good beer as well. The wait staff was off to a slow start -

Duck, duck, beet!
I came here for a dinner out with my sister who is a mom and doesn't get to go out much. We had some nice sparkling wine that we paired with duck poutine, smoke duck carpaccio and roasted beets (served with walnut butter and goat cheese). While nothing was healthy about our meal, it was really really good. -

I was a fan but my recent dinner was a downer. It was a big dinner for four. Birthday celebration. Service was good but the kitchen policy that you can't substitute one starch for another is dumb. My guest wanted the potatoes instead of the spatzle with her ham. What's the big deal? What if she had a life-threatening statzle allergy? Then, for desert, the "on-tap" (beer flavoured) spice cake was so dry it sucked all the moisture out of the room. Yes, the server took the cake off the bill but the fact that they served it all was indicative of lack of quality control in the kitchen. (Too busy monitoring the spatzle rations, I guess.) Beets in the beet appetizer a bit too hard. Sadly so were the gnocchi. Sorry, MSKWC, you were good but now you ain't.

I don't know if it is just that all Canadians are this nice but the staff at this place seemed exceptionally so and even better yet they were really well informed about the menu and various cheese and wine options. As soon as we walked in the door the bartender was telling us about all the great local cheeses, wines, and beers and just sharing his passion for the local ingredients.
I am not ashamed to say I came here 3 nights in a row with a group and ate nearly everything on the menu after falling in love with our very patient and friendly waitress, Bethanne.
None of the wild game meats had any gaminess to them, they were all done perfectly with high quality ingredients. I thought the lamb leg was some of the best lamb I have ever had and I always order lamb when it is on the menu anywhere. Unmatched. The other stand-out was their massive charcuterie plate. Bone marrow, elk sausage, pickled veggies, it was so piled high our group of 4 oversized Texans almost didn't finish it!
I could go on for pages about how great this place is, I will definitely be there next time I am in town in fact I may have to make sure our conference gets scheduled in Ottawa next year as well. -

So I came into murrays looking for the spatzle Mac and cheese that they had that I couldn't order last time. Alas, they have taken it off the menu. Damn, now I'm going to go on a mission and make my own.
I decided to give their brunch a shot and had their "Murray Benedict". Neat thing is that the serve you doughnuts and brownies while you wait for the main with your coffee. A nice touch.
As for the Benedict, true to a Murray's dish, they took the dish and added a little bit of the unexpected. It's funny cause on the menu they state it comes with "smoked pig parts". So I'm not sure if the "parts" do regular rotation but mine consisted of smoked pork belly (whew). The poached eggs were also laid upon a cakey bread which related best to cornbread texture to me.
All that said, I think they best way to describe this dish is a "southern eggs Benedict". Along with the smoked pork and cornbready bread that they had that's exactly what I was thinking. Did it work taste-wise? Meh... I thought the smoked pork belly was a fantastic touch, but I wasn't a fan of the outer crust of the belly (cause smoking meat usually ends up with a dry crust). I also didn't really enjoy the bread. It kinda made me feel like I was eating cake; that's the consistency of the bread.
Even though I didn't get what I came here originally for I did have a chance to be surprised by another dish "Murray Style". I swear if they take their duck poutine off the menu things are going to get serious.Listed in: The Best Eggs Benedicts EVER!

The Murray Street is charming. The service is great. The food is fine. It's a low key, casual place, with a great back patio.
This is my only objection: stop trying to dress up offal and other horrible, discarded animal parts.
I know, I know: anyone can cook up a filet, and foodies love able-to-make-something-out-of-nothing chefs. But there is a reason pigs ears and ox tongue generally get made into hot dogs and dog food. -

Fantastic charcuterie restaurant! Beyond the really well-constructed charcuterie menu (featuring things like elk salami, duck live pate, and the sharpest cheddar I've had in a long time), you'll find all kinds of other complementary dishes to round out your meal.
The duck poutine is a particularly nice construction, with duck gravy (chunky with soft duck meat!) and squeaky-delicious cheese curd slathered over something less fried-ish than normal french fries- think something more like shredded potato hash. It was just fantastic.
Dessert was great, drinks were great (well-executed cocktails left us all feeling quite satisfied for the price), and service was friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. I have to say that this is the best meal I've ever had in the Byward Market, and it is definitely my new go-to place in that part of town. -

Went here for lunch, the appetizer was great, Elk sausages (from their selection of charcuterie), see pics I posted. But the sandwich and mac & cheese was just ok, nothing special at all. I ordered the Reuben corned beef sandwich with thoughts of NYC's mile high, steaming hot sandwiches in mind, instead got a few thin slices of meat that looked more like roast beef than corned beef. The mac & cheese had too much oil from the melted cheese.
Would have given it 2 stars were it not for the appetizers, will give this place another shot - will go for dinner instead. Would suggest you pass on lunch. -

I don't get to peruse the Ottawa food scene as much as I'd like given the limited time I have on trips here but WOW, I'm convinced this is currently among the best restaurants you'll find. If you're visiting, make sure you hit this spot. The back terrace patio is great.
A few notes, they are meat heavy (my favourite) but they do it so well you should drag your vegetarian friends in and try the conversion here.
Few restaurants I know can do a variety of meats so well, mariposa duck, perfect, crisp yet moist, fall off the bone short rib, succulent juicy pork loin, spot on medium rare rack of lamb.....on and on. Impressive.
And the sides were also their own attraction as to the usual afterthought, amazing....hand cut sour cream spaetzle, Le Coprin mushrooms....ugh.
Newly anointed as one of Canada's best new restos of 2009 and they match up to the billing. A couple of visits, I am giving them the rare top star. A local friend mentioned that this place is the current favourite among the foodie parlimentarians, but if Harper walks in after me, you bet his ass I'm expecting to be seated first.Listed in: My Best Meals

Fantastic restaurant! Friendly staff, great food, cozy atmosphere.
My wife and I have been here 3 times and have enjoyed the experience every time. I came twice for dinner and once for lunch and much preferred the dinner time. I think it has to do with the ambiance, soft lighting and comfortable seating.
This is a very meat oriented menu obviously but there is a vegetarian option for those that are interested. Menu changes regularly which is nice. I've tried the cheese and meat platter which seems to be their signature dish/platter, it was okay. Most recently I had the beef snitzel with mashed potatoes and paired it with the '09 Ripasso. Not a great pairing but both we're fantastic on their own! We actually started with the duck wings, very good, not gamey at all as I assumed it would be. My 3 year old had the poutine... Amazing!! My wife had a lamb dish, it was more than she could eat but quite tasty too.
The service was very friendly and professional. She knew the menu well and steered us in the right direction when we asked for advice.
As good as everything was it isn't a cheap experience. With 2 apps, 2 main courses, 1 dessert and 4 drinks our total was $170 after a tip. We would certainly go back but really only on special occasions or when we want to show off a unique restaurant to out of town friends.
P.S. avoid the Caesar, not good at all (IMHO). They make the mix themselves. I've yet to drink a good Caesar when the restaurant makes their own mix. -

Having just celebrated its first anniversary earlier this year, Murray Street Kitchen & Charcuterie is a neighborhood gem in the By Ward Market district of Ottawa.
Dishes are prepared using only seasonal and regional Canadian ingredients and the freshness and flavor of the the offerings are evident that slow food movement practices are in place.
As a visitor to the Capitol, I knew that I had to indulge in the popular dish "Poutine", however, after seeing one local restaurant announcing that they use "real cheese curd", I questioned what the substitution was. Was this some sort of cheap lasagna, where cottage cheese is used instead of mozzarella? I had seen several neighborhood food trailers selling this dish in The Glebe and Westboro as well and even read an article claiming that it was a heart attack in a dish - now I had to try it.
The Poutine dish at Murray Street Kitchen & Charcuterie is quite upmarket, prepared using crispy hand-cut herb spatzle, shredded mariposa duck confit, roast duck gravy and 5th town Goat cheese curds. Wow - real cheese and not just any cheese, but yummy goat cheese. If this dish induces a heart attack, well, what a way to go.
My main dish, the "Feature Farm Special" which changes often, included a wonderfully prepared breast of chicken with wild rice and tender, young vegetables ... oh, that sounded kind of naughty.
I wanted to order all of the dessert selections, however, after my Poutine starter, I knew that I had to watch my calorie intake and opted for the 4lb carrot cake. I'm not certain what the "4lb" prefers to, but the cupcake size baked goodness was a perfect ending to a wonderful dinner. -

Visited the restarurant on Dec 30, 2011 and had a pretty good experience. The charcuterie plate ($35) was great ( the smoked duck was amazing) a little pricey I think for what it is? The poutine($11) is nothing to write home about; I actually like the potine at Smokes Poutinery better and it's a fast food joint. I read a review that compared this restaurant to 'Au Pied du Cochon' in Montreal but this restarurant is not even in the same league. My friends and I ate at 'Play Food and Wine" (within walking distance) and all thought it was much better than Murray Street.

A phenomenal experience every single time. My favourite place in Ottawa by miles and miles. The staff is professional, pleasant and passionate. The food is amazing. The charcuterie is to die for. You will more often than not find Chef Steve in the kitchen. Go here. Period.

Food was great but service was terrible. Our friend ordered food mentioning his nut allergy and was provided a meal containing nuts. He apologized because he couldn't eat it but was told he had to pay by both the head chef and manager. In my opinion this is entirely unacceptable.

I visited Murray Street for lunch on Saturday and was greeted by a funky atmosphere and friendly service. I had the cassoulet which was very tasty.
It was a good first experience with the following caveat: I was expecting a lunch menu (not brunch) and as a result wasn't thrilled with having only breakfasty options. The website does not clearly indicate that the lunch menu is only available on weekdays. -

NOT a good place for vegetarians, but if you'll bend and eat some local/ethically raised meat (or are just a full out carnivore), this is the place for you. "Meat" is the watchword here. Meat, meat, more meat.
Small, unpretentious (despite the big $$), jeans are totally appropriate here.
Quite delicious! I had the Duck Confit, which means it's salt-cured then poached in its own fat. So basically it tastes like its been wrapped in salty delicious bacon. Incredibly rich, not for the faint of arteries. My partner had the 'pork head to tail", also quite tasty (no head or tail involved, thankfully).
Definitely for a special night out-- we spent about $100 for 2 entrees, one appy, and drinks. Beware the meat-sweats, however. :) -
Review from Laura D.
Murray Street Kitchen doesn't look much like a restaurant from the outside, well, at least not to me. In fact, I thought it was a butcher or deli from the street view and it was my friend who walked up to read the menu offerings. It was 4 PM and like many restaurants, we were helplessly between dinner and lunch. They did have a Charcuterie menu, available at this time, offering a choice of 3 cheeses and 2 meats for 30$ (or 3 meats and 2 cheeses) and considering we weren't really that hungry, only curious, that was going to suit us just fine.
Entering the restaurant felt a little like heading into a sugar shack. A very modern version of a sugar shack, with dirndls and lederhosen. Yes, Beau's All Natural Brewing Co. (the very beer I had just polished off at a bar around the corner!) was hosting some sort of an Oktoberfest event until 5 PM. Chef/Owner Steve Mitton greeted us and offered to seat us on the terrace, but it was extremely hot and humid that day and my delicate features would never handle it. Then my friend spontaneously made us a 5:30 PM reservation and we slid off for drinks at a pub around the corner.
When we headed back to the Murray Street Kitchen at 5:30 PM, all signs of the Oktoberfest had disappeared and the true feel of the restaurant was clear. Homey and comfortable. And oh so friendly. Our waiter, Geoff (he looked more like a Geoff than a Jeff), came over to us immediately and informed us of the drink menu for the evening. I couldn't resist the peach margarita and my friend ordered the pisco sour. When I saw fresh peaches being sliced for my margarita, I knew it was going to be delicious and I was absolutely right!
I still had the Charcuterie menu on my mind and was still not very hungry, but after Geoff related to us the plates of the evening, I wanted it all, everything. I would order the cheeses and meats, as well as the lamb with roasted beets and yogurt sauce, and oh, yes, I want the pork shoulder too. My friend and Geoff reasoned with me, that maybe that would be a little much and so I compromised and ordered just one cheese (Grey Owl) and one meat (Elk Salami) along with their Spatzle Poutine. For our main dishes, my friend ordered the Sockeye Salmon and I ordered the Lamb with roasted beets and yogurt sauce.
Apparently we had gone from not very hungry to famished because we cleared our plates and I ordered the house made S'mores. I cannot talk about it, nor write about it without my mouth watering up. It was fabulous. Simple and fabulous! Pure decadence in a Mason jar.
I honestly cannot find the words to describe what a wonderful experience it was to dine there. Some of the greatest discoveries are made by accident! -

A hard-to-find restaurant on Murray Street, in a converted single family home close to Le Marche By. Amazing menu. Their Caesar Bloody Mary is made with their very own tomato and clam juice mixture, served with the crunchiest celery stick ever (dunked in cheese whiz, which is why I dinged them one star). Food was outstanding. Lovely duck trio club sandwich made with duck bacon, duck confit and duck fat mayo on slices of brioche, served with very thin pickled carrots, field greens and radish sprouts. I ordered an additional Mac and Cheese flavored with three Canadian cheeses and dusted with what I thought was crumbled bacon and breadcrumbs. All in, all, outstanding. The staff are very cheery and friendly. Great experience.

So, so good. I'm just sorry I didn't get to try the poutine (I had the duck trio so it seemed a bit excessive).

Taste sensations that I had never before experienced! A lovely meal from start to finish. Save room for dessert, if you can! The bread pudding was divine.
