In the Chinese community Mui Garden is famous for their beef brisket and their haninese chicken. I tried the other locations, so I decided to try this one too.
I tried their tea time special and asked if I could get it without pork, and get it with chicken instead and they were ok with it. Which is awesome, because some Chinese places totally give me the stink eye.
My boyfriend had the curry beef brisket. The beef was tender and the curry sauce is awesome! Same as the other locations, and has that same buttery flavour (or maybe coconut milk?). We took the extra sauce home and mixed it in with our own chicken the next day and it was still pretty good.
Their serving size is generous and the ice lemon tea is awesome! Some places only give you two pieces of lemon for the ice lemon tea, which doesn't really cut it but this places gives you three or four, which really helps with the lemon flavour. A small thing I know but totally makes a difference.
I got a pretty decent meal for under 10 bucks which is awesome.
I see on their menu they also do party trays for 20+ people and it seemed like a really good deal too. Might have to try it for my next corporate party. -

I have been here a few times. It's not really my fav Hong Kong cafe, but one dish they blow out of the water is their curry beef brisket on rice. It is creamy and flavourful. The portion is generous, and sometimes it's enough for leftovers.
The other dishes aren't bad, but they aren't outstanding. The service is a bit better for an Asian restaurant, but it's not outstanding either. The price is about average, too.
Overall, I'm right in the middle for this one. I'll go back, but I don't think I'll ever crave anything from this restaurant.Listed in: Chinese/Taiwanese Tricks and…

I would still say the dishes are a hit and miss. You can't go wrong with the curry beef brisket

As General MacArthur once said, "I shall return". Mind you, he didn't have to type this review twice over because he accidentally hit the 'back' button on his smart phone. Well, at least the second go round, it's on my computer, so I can type it faster.
I came here for the curry beef brisket, and that is largely what my review of Mui Garden is based on.
For starters, I'll give you some background, which will hopefully help this review make more sense: when it comes to curry beef brisket, I'm extremely partial to the darker, more brothy variety that is served at Hon's and a few other places.
I rate the curry beef brisket at Hon's at a rock solid 5 out of 5 stars, and use it as my personal bench mark by which to compare other curry beef brisket dishes. The only knock I have against the one at Hon's is that as of last year, they cut the portion size by almost half, while keeping the exact same price. Anyway, this will give you an idea of where I'm coming from.
Now to the Mui Garden curry beef brisket...
Overall, I rate this beef brisket at a fair 3 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed it, but not in a big way.
As to portion size, the portion was generous; the amount of rice especially was quite a lot.
The curry itself was of the bright yellow, creamy, saucy variety which I am not partial to. In addition, there were far to many (very large) potato pieces, in proportion to the amount of meat. As well as this, the potatoes were almost raw (really, I'm not making that up). I docked a star for too much potato, and one for what potato there was being very undercooked. As I am aware of my bias against this particular style of curry beef brisket (saucy, not brothy, and yellow, not dark), I am not taking any stars off for that.
To be fair about the potatoes, we ordered a second serving of curry beef brisket, and when ordering the second one, I requested that they NOT put any potatoes in it, and I got it without potatoes; just full up with beef and curry sauce. A few other places I have been refuse to omit the potatoes; mind you, I like potatoes in a curry beef brisket - I just like them to be thoroughly cooked, and not to take the focus off the beef in the dish.
Now, my wife, who shared this dish with me, is VERY partial to this style of curry, and as a matter of fact, when ordering curry beef brisket (or pretty much any other curry), she usually makes a point of asking them to make sure they put lots of potatoes in. So she and I have a very different take on what makes a good curry beef brisket.
In my wife's opinion, the curry beef brisket at Mui Garden on North Road is worthy of no less than 5 stars. I won't argue with her, because for her, this kind of curry is pretty much tops, although she also thought the potatoes were somewhat undercooked.
So if you split the difference between my curry experience and my wife's, you wind up with 4 out of 5 stars, and there I'll leave it.
Moving on to other things:
The waitresses were very efficient, and our orders arrived very quickly (under ten minutes). The restaurant was not busy when we were there, so that may well not have been the case had we arrived at lunch time.
I ordered a glass of 'Fresh' strawberry juice, and when I tasted it, I almost gagged on it, as it was so sweet! The poster made it clear that all the fruit/vegetable juices were 'freshly juiced' - there was no indication that any sugar would be added. To give you an idea of just how sweet the strawberry juice was, it was probably something like twice the apparent sweetness of a milk shake from a McDonald's restaurant.
To be fair, the waitress did make good on her offer to replace the drink with another one that did not have any sugar in it. She explained that 'That is the way Chinese people like their fruit juice. So we make it that way. If you don't want sugar, no problem, but you have to let us know beforehand." So off comes one star for the 'sweet' surprise (down from the 4 based on the curry). I'll know better for next time, but I should not have had to ask her NOT to omit sugar from fruit 'juice'. Add sugar to it, and it's no longer juice, it's just a 'beverage'. Yeah, I'm quibbling, but quibble I must, at least when writing a review.
I'll probably return to Mui Garden at some point; but if I'm looking for beef brisket curry, I'll head on over to Hon's - even with their chintzy serving size, their curry beef brisket is the one to beat!
So I'm giving Mui Garden 3 stars overall; it's not a bad place, and the prices seem to be reasonable. It's a decent place to get a bite to eat.
I may change this rating to hopefully something higher at some point in the future if I return and have a more enjoyable experience at Mui Garden, but for now I'll leave it at 3 stars, which is not bad. I'd take my friends there.

The food is very good. Maybe even great. The staff are all totally racist towards white people and show it. 'Nuff said.

Mui Garden has the best curry brisket and they're pretty well known for that among local Chinese food goers. What's better is it's on their special menu (basically happy hour since that menu is in effect I think 4-6pm).
We got the curry brisket with rice, pan fried noodle with beef (gon chow ow haw), and another noodle dish. Each was $6 and came with rice and your choice of soup or a drink (e.g. pop, milk tea, lemon Coke etc). We got soup and it was yummy. Typical clear Chinese home cooking type soup with some veggies in it. Servings are really generous and it was all delicious (especially the curry brisket).
Also got a great dessert (tong sui). It was coconut tapioca with taro and it was super good. Tasty, not too sweet, perfection. -
Review from Allen W.
This was my first time visiting this restaurant and I decided to test their character by ordering my favourite minced beef congee ($4.50) and chinese donut ($1.80 big portion though).
When the congee was placed in front of me, I knew from the smell that it was going to be a tough sell. The scent had a slight seafood tinge which I am picky about. The congee was thick and creamy but the flavor wasn't rich, which was fairly bland in comparison to other's I've had elsewhere.
The beef was in rather large chunks, like small patties. The flavor of the beef wasn't very strong although it was tender. Overall, it wasn't all that appealing and I wouldn't order it again. The chinese donut was super crispy and held up well when dipped in the congee -- yum.
The restaurant has a lengthy, well-priced menu. Most tables ordered curry and I will have to give it a try on my next visit. For a holiday afternoon, the restaurant had a steady stream of customers. -

Instead of driving all the way back to the city from Deer Lake after a stroll around the park, we decided to hit one of the many Asian restaurants on North Road. Allen wanted congee and Mui Garden was the first restaurant we spotted after making a right on North Road from Lougheed Highway.
It is a typical casual Hong Kong cafe that serves noodles, rice plates, congees, snacks and traditional fusion plates from Hong Kong like baked spaghetti with seafood in white sauce.
Allen ordered minced beef congee with a side order of Chinese doughnuts and I had Hainanese chicken rice. Allen said his congee was not all that good but the doughnut was hefty and held the congee well for dipping. My chicken rice was rich and flavourful and the portion of steamed chicken was quite decent.
Overall, a very good place, I think, for a decent light and inexpensive Hong Kong cafe type meal. It is also a great alternative to the food court if you are shopping the nearby Lougheed Mall. -

Good authentic Chinese food with a typical Chinese decor. I'm more into the food rather than how large the entry lantern is.

Just there, first timer. Had chicken wings, wonton soup, corn soup, all take-out. At $26 a little pricey, and the food mediocre. Except for the wonton, which was fresh/tasty but the broth so salty had to add water to it. Not worth it - won't return. There's a few better Korean places nearby. Also, hard plastic, non-recycleable dishes - a no-no in our books.
