This place is in the same vein as other vintage/reclamation shops such as the store at the Drake Hotel. They do have some clothing, but I found the housewares and assorted miscellany more interesting. It has all manner of neat stuff - it's just a matter of whether something inside particularly tickles your fancy. If you're in the market for some funky home decor, or perhaps for the ladies, vintage jewelry or accessories (of the funky persuasion), this place is definitely worth a look.

One of the things I noted in my visit were a variety of similar items that all appeared to be trays filled with miniature shot glasses (say, approx. 1/2 oz). There were metal trays with uniform glasses, and wooden trays with stylized glasses. After spending 5 minutes trying to figure out what the deuce these things were for, I started to ask the girl "Hey, what'r these things..." She cut me off and finished my thought "I know. They look like a tray of mini-shots, huh? I'm not certain, but I think they come from the local churches. I'm guessing they're for communion." Now, why didn't I think of that? And all of the sudden, the appeal of the item increased. Why, this could be used for all manner of blasphemous purposes. Hmmm...

So, I intend to swing back at some point when I can carry it to pick up one of those trays. I think it's a great party gimmick. And my point is, if you appreciate the random, the different, the occasionally absurd, this place is worth a look.

    Conjunction Junction, what's your function?

To sell nice things to nice people=)  Mrs. Huizenga's located at Dundas and Keele is a pretty funky vintage store.  The store stocks mostly recycled goods just like an orphanage for vintage personal items, or a super cool garage sale.  I purchased a ridiculous piece of furniture there. In retrospect I probably should have thought about it more than a second before buying this monstrosity of an item.  It truly competes with everything in the room for the most wrong looking object.  It is a fireplace/record player/bar circa 1960-70s.  I figured hey, all of my favourite things combined in one unified unit!  The store owner arranged for movers to help me with the beast.  The store employees were very charming and fun.  I think it is a hit or miss type situation with this vintage store, as so many are. The prices seemed reasonably and there was not one pretentious vibe in the store. Worth it for sure to explore if you are in the hood.  I recommend this establishment.

But make um understand Its Westside foe Life

Thanks so much for your time,
    Cheers,
    Jenna

Visiting a vintage store is like going for a treasure hunt. Mrs Huizenga as a vintage/antiques stores for sure has a lot of treasures inside!

Browsing through all these antiques housewares, home deco and personal accessories for sure is an interesting experience

For the prices point.. can I dare to say it is in the eyes of the beholders? And if you find something that you love and must have priced reasonable then the price is good!

This store is absolutely adorable. If I were to own a vintage store, and it looked like Mrs Huizenga's, I think I would be really happy with myself.

It's got a great selection of stuff outside, just begging you to come in and look around. Once you're in, you'll be overwhelmed by the great collection of vintage furniture, clothes, accessories, and, well, everything. On my trip I found a great pair of leather boots that were only $26! And a size six. I kept trying to convince myself I could go down the two sizes by binding my feet or something, that's how great these boots were.

Everything in this place is really cute and interesting, but not overpriced like the Kensington vintage shops. And you can always negotiate with the owner, as I saw a couple of old ladies doing, if you want the price to be lower. You might not win, but hey, it's worth a try.

Definitely stop in here if you're close by, or even go out of your way to find it. I guarantee you'll find something you'll fall in love with.

I don't have a time machine (or a DeLorean for that matter), so I go here when I need some nostalgia. But if you didn't just get that reference, you probably won't get as much out of Mrs. Huizenga as I do.

Sure, it sells cool vintage clothes and products by local artists, chefs, designers, etc. but what I like are its vintage toys. When I visit, I'm swept back in time when I see a set of tinker toys (my brother never shared) or a view-finder (I had the Gremlins!) or even just the checkerboard floor of rusty-orange and black (I played a lot of checkers when I was a kid).

Oh, and buttons. Any store that sells buttons gets at least 3 stars.

Although I wouldn't say they have a particularly impressive array of vintage clothing, they do have an impressive selection of housewares and fashion accessories.

The cash area is filled with beautiful antique crystal hair pins, rings, and broaches. For the housewares I thoroughly enjoyed their old books, vintage telephones and antique cabinets.

Mrs. Huizinga is a hip little shop that is a little bit antique store, a little bit thrift shop, and a little bit knickknack emporium. It's like a condensed version of Goodwill or Value Village, where someone has picked over all the stuff and only put the nifty, stylish oddities out for sale.

Some of the stuff in the rotating inventory includes tea sets, dress shoes, cheap sunglasses, and old furnishings. The curtained change booths are easy to miss, since they blend right in with all the bric-a-brac. The owner's cute dog, unfortunately, is not for sale (although it's obviously got a funky home already).

i've been visiting this shop since it opened. mrs. huizenga has a great eye, yes but what bothers me are the prices. while there are some real unique vintage finds that are worth the price, there are a lot of pieces that  arent. for instance, i have seen her multiple times in the roncesvalles goodwill just down the street picking up items that were later in her store marked up more then double what she paid for. i understand that's what profit is all about but buyer just needs to beware of the item they are purchasing. you could probably get the same glassware and knick knacks, even clothing at a value village for more then half the price. that being said there are special things in this store too, ones you don't see anywhere else. it just takes a little hunting and knowledge. the staff itself is relatively friendly, maybe a little stuck up sometimes. i still visit this store to see what mrs. huizenga has recently found but i rarely purchase, only when it's truly an item i have not seen elsewhere.
