Not your typical soup and sandwich place! If you are tired from the same-old downtown lunch options, you need to go to MRKT!

They have an awesome menu - and one that is friendly to those who are looking for gluten-free options too!

Trendy & cute decor - mostly cafeteria style seating, but they have a few booths for a more cozy experience.

Lunch time is quite busy there so I decided to wait until the noon-hour rush passed. I arrived at 12:40ish and it was still buzzing with people chatting over good food. If you are a person who enjoys a more quiet dining experience, it got drastically more quiet around 1PM.

Some people have commented that the food is a bit pricey, and I tend to agree, but it is so worth it! I left feeling happy and satisfied with spending $13 on a soup and sandwich combo! YUM!

I ordered the soup and sandwich combo-- smoked gouda, basil, roasted tomato and arugula sandwich one of the four sandwiches they had to choose from, with a Vietnamese soup to be exact.

The food is a bit on the pricier side but delicious nonetheless.  I took a bite out of my friend's  calabrese and prosciutto sandwich, which I liked more.

The Vietnamese soup wasn't what I was expecting... it was more of a stew than a soup. It was good, but not very hearty.

It there were any suggestions I suggest for this place, it's to have more selection and to make the soup more hearty. Maybe lower the prices if they can establish more clientele.

My friend's a foodie and this is her go to spot for meeting someone for a glass and a bite. And I see why. This wine bar has a modern but not sterile decor; wood paneling and dime lighting give it intimacy, while the long high granite tables give you luxurious space. I was there on a Wednesday so it wasn't busy--my roommate and I closed the place down when we left at 10:00pm.

Can't comment too much on the food, since we didn't have much. I had a cheese and chutney appetizer and my roommate had a seafood pasta. Prices were on the lower end of the wine bars in town--not cheap but not unreasonable. My appetizer was good, nothing sharp (which I prefer). My roommate's dish on the other hand was fantastically creative. I only had a bit, but the combination of a variety of seafood, thick pasta, chickpeas, and a light creamy tomato sauce was addicting.

There is a small selection of wines by the glass ($8-$9.5) and a larger selection of bottles. I'm not a wine connoisseur. I tried a few glasses of red and they were all great--ranging from light to bold and all interesting. There are also beers and other drinks.

MRKT is a place for the people. Who like wine. And small $8 appetizers. I'll be back.

We happened to be sitting across the street in pub 1905 trying to decide what we wanted to do for dinner when I seen this place through the window. We decided that we would try this place for an appetizer and a glass of wine before going somewhere different for dinner.

We went in and were very impressed by the amazing decor and subway tunnel style walls. The high tables were very European. The lighting was perfect. In fact my first thought was about how much potential this place had. It is the atmosphere I prefer.

We had a glass of wine and went with the bacon broth mussels. Honestly, who wouldn't try bacon flavored anything and my wife and I could never not get mussels. The mussels were only decent however, the bacon flavor was far overpowering everything in the plate. The crusty bread was a little too crusty - even for Italian standards. The other menu items looked great so we decided that we would be back.

A couple of weeks later we went back. This time we got the feature lamb chops over quinoa salad. The salad was amazing and we still make our own version of it at home regularly. The lamb chops on the other hand were by far the worst I have ever had anywhere. To start there was barely a single bite on each, it was a mix of small size and grissle with a small chunk of meat. They only gave us three chops so that was literally 3 bites of meat and a salad for approximately $25.

We decided to order some deserts and our waitress explained them to us and gave us a minute to think about it. Unfortunately that minute turned into 30 and I had to go find her in the back just to pay.

In this case I am very disappointed. I really did want to like this place. It is a great location and the food was looking promising. Unfortunately the execution and service has tainted this place.

I may be back, but only after all other options are exhausted.

The food at MRKT is to die for. Last time I was there I ordered the braised beef over mashed potatoes and polenta, and it nearly brought me to tears it was so delicious. In addition to an incredible menu, the decor and atmosphere of the place make for a cool urban vibe that's the rest of Jasper Avenue should aspire to. They have a great drink menu with lots of different wines and some very delicious cocktails. I really love this place though occasionally I've missed an opportunity to enjoy because they're hours are pretty specific. I take care to plan for evenings and make reservations just to make sure I get a spot!

MRKT is my all-time favourite downtown lunch spot. Their soups and sandwiches are amazing, and the prices are decent. $14 for a soup, sandwich and can of soda. I recently tried their white fish chowder, and it was incredible. I've had all three of their regular sandwiches, and I can't choose a favourite.

The interior reminds me of being in the hull of a ship. It's very cool. The only downside is it gets pretty loud in there, because the place is always packed. Get there early, or you won't get a seat.

Be sure to check them out on Twitter. They tweet their features daily.

I have to start by saying MRKT makes some of the best soup in town! Their chicken tortilla with corn and feta knocked my socks off. Everyday (well almost everyday), they tweet their specials including 3 soups (meat/fish/veg) They also specify if they are gluten free! As a celiac, I really really appreciate this. However I wish they had more gf options, like gf sandwiches and specials. The only things that are gf are the soups and their house salad (which is also amazing- great dressing!). The decor is really modern and trendy. Space is limited, so be ready to take out. But the food comes out quickly and is delicious.
If they had more gluten free options and prices a little more reasonable ($13 for a small soup and small salad- not enough for lunch), I would give 5/5 but for now, 4/5.

With a name like mrkt I was expecting a decent food selection, which this place did not deliver. Needless to say I was quite disappointed with my over $10 sandwich, served with extremely greasy potato chips out of bag from a grocery store.  They seriously offer only 2 sandwiches, 2 soups, 2 salads and one special, all of which is nothing special.  The ambiance is kinda cool and I guess that's what you're playing for. It's also odd that what I assumed to be a lunch spot has a vast selection of wine.  Perhaps they should choose whether to be a bistro, resty, lounge?  I was not impressed.

MRKT makes among the very best sandwiches in Edmonton - I'd say they're tied with Elm Cafe, which is fine company to be in.

Very simple menus, everything made fresh that day. You typically get to choose between several sandwiches and soups at lunch, with a limited evening menu - more of a place for tapas and wine at night than anything else.

The room here is simple, with cafeteria-style seating, and nice wooden finishing - some have likened it to be in an inside-out canoe. Or some such thing.

Great staff, very attentive, and the owner and head chef is tremendously creative. Run by the former owner of Soul Soup, you're guaranteed something absolutely delicious is a little bit pricey. But it's worth it to be exposed to the tremendous flavours and fine ambience of a vowel-less MRKT.

Edmonton in the wintertime is a good time to get your soup on. And that is just what I did at my first foray into Mrkt. The space is just my speed. Long bar, cute booths, eco-ish and modern. It would be a hot-rocking-bar at night if I had it my way.

Love ordering from the chalkboard menu and the self-serve water station on the edge of the bar. Note to the serving staff: if someone orders a glass of water and you have a self-serve area for said liquid, mentioning it is helpful. I would have even appreciated a wink, a nod, a pointer finger in the general direction.

At the tail end of the lunch rush, they'd run out of my first soup choice, but after a slurpful of my second choice (a seafood tomato bisque I believe) I was thinking "first choice? Forgettaboutem". It was full of seafood, seasoned just right and had a bit of a kick to it. I paired my soup up with a sandwich, but next time, I would go straight up soup next time. My sandwich just wasn't what I was expecting. Roasted tomatoes and cheese should be simple, but it was oil-drenched with sad little bits of lettuce swimming in a sea of oil. Disappointing. But hey, not everything can be a menu hit!

Mmmm, yelpers, you were correct! MRKT is indeed a very cool lunch spot in downtown Edmonton.

We arrived just before lunch service was ending (2 PM) so it was just us and one other twosome. I freaking love the decor in here. It's so cool and trendy, it doesn't feel like it belongs in a non-descript office building in Edmonton. (Or does it?) I especially love the long fire-log looking lamp sitting atop one of the long tables.

We settled into a cool, bamboo-y booth and waited for our meals. I'm trying to be a vegetarian lately so with no vegetarian soup in stock that day (get it?), I had to settle for just a salad. It was a pretty good salad, though. Lunch date enjoyed her sandwich and fish soup, which smelled really delicious.

We asked for just water with our meals, and they said sure, but didn't tell us there was a serve-yourself tap just nearby. Maybe it's my fault for not noticing it, but I was super thirsty until the end of the meal when I finally realized...

I liked my meal and the decor enough that I would definitely come back, and would try it out for dinner. I would love to see what it looks like in the evening once the lights go down and the party amps up. (Full bar, hello!)

I have been meaning to go to MRKT for quite some time and finally made it last week.  As far as decor goes- it is a 10 out of 10.  It is a smaller place, which is quite uncharacteristic of Edmonton restaurants and has a great feel.  There is one huge family style table as well as tables for small groups and it has a beautiful curved wood ceiling, skylights and lighting...very modern and homey.

Their wine selection is really good and the menu is creative and interesting.  We had the charcuterie, prawns w/ sweet potato mash & the fondue- they were all wonderful.

We will be back for sure!

We went there to check out what all the fuss was about (I love yelpers!).

We arrived just before the dinner rush and had a couple small items to share from the tapas menu. I love love love tapas. The cabbage slaw included dried cherries and Asian pear and was complemented by just the right amounts of sesame dressing and chicken. The 'melty' cheese pot was a fondue style dish with mascarpone and leek. It reminded me of a hot spinach dip (maybe the leeks were a bit overpowering for the cheese), and came with lots of thinly sliced bread, smoked salmon and giant capers.  I loved the giant capers!

I came with too low blood sugar and was a bit grumpy coming in, the wine menu didn't inspire me, but what we ordered  was very nice and my mood improved as we enjoyed the food and drink.

Our server was not well prepared for either the food or wine menu. She was pleasant, but not very helpful.  Hopefully a bit more training is planned for this relatively new spot.

The place was definitely getting busier as we left and I think it will be a great wine and tapas place to return to with friends to check out more of the menu!

We have definitely decided to add MRKT to our Edmonton restaurant location. The interior of the restaurant is decorated with what I assume is flooring, except it's all over the walls and ceiling. The menu is written on a chalkboard close to the register. There's a pretty good variety, but quite honestly I think the menu is a little cluttered & disorganized. The seating is very cafeteria style, but that's okay sometimes it forces you to socialize with people outside of your work or usual social circle.

The food is fantastic! Some of the best, freshest and most reasonably priced sandwiches that I've found in downtown Edmonton. The staff is friendly and pretty attentive. All around good place to grab lunch, just wish they also served dinner instead of only small plates!

I went to MRKT today with a girlfriend from work on our lunch break. I kind of felt like I was cheating on The Sequel, but alas, I wanted to try the place, so off we went!

I'd read the other reviews here, so I knew it was going to be nice, but i was still impressed when we walked in. Just totally sleek and cool, and still laid back. Beautiful wood and I really liked the giant chalk board that the menu is written on.

The girl at the counter was a'ight - pleasant for sure, but not super emotive or anything.

I decided to go with the soup and sandwich combo ($13) with the vegetarian soup of the day - chipotle tomato three bean with sour cream, and the spicy calabrese sandwich (as I am... spice Calabrese) - prosciutto, basil, smoked gouda, spring greens and roasted tomato. I wasn't keeping track of the time, but I didn't get annoyed, so it must have come out within a reasonable time frame.

My soup was good with a bit of heat, but wasn't quite as flavourful as I had hoped. Could have used a smidge more sour cream and green onions, too. The sandwich was very good, good quality meat and the basil really jumped out at me. It was pretty small, though. My friend had the same sandwich as me but had the fish soup. She liked it, but not long afterwards felt like she had a touch of food poisoning :(

Overall a really nice place with tasty, good quality food. Points off for price (too high), size of the sandwich (relative to price, not quality) and service (could be a little happier).

A nice little downtown place with a pleasant atmosphere and a friendly staff.

Sadly, we went around dinner time - and the dinner menu was a little lacking. I suspect lunch would be a much better time to visit, as the lunch menu seems a little more... robust.

Also, what we ordered off the menu wasn't available, and we were offered an alternative. What we ended up getting was also of a smaller portion - more of an appetizer than a meal.

    However it was delicious!

Definitely seems like more of an urban lunch destination.

I had been wanting to go here for lunch for a while now but they always seem to be closed when I want to eat (between 2 and 4). I ended up going for drinks with friends when our standby (Redstar) was full. The decor is very warm and modern and the long family style table allows you to fit a small or large group easily.

The menu was very tempting but we only ordered drinks. They had classic caipirinhas which I haven't had since living in Argentina so two of us ordered one and the other girl ordered a virgin cocktail.  The waitress took a while to give us menus and then, after taking our order, took 15 minutes to come back and tell us that they were out of Caipirinha mix.  We ordered other drinks and it took another 10 minutes for those to come back.  I'm hoping this service was a one time thing becase I would still like to go back for lunch sometime.

Yay downtown Edmonton! Okay, so there's still a long ways to go before you can reliably walk down Jasper and find good eats on every block but we're getting there, slowly but surely.

MRKT offers tasty and simple lunchtime eats - the kind of meal that keeps you going for the rest of the day. The soups and sandwiches are fresh, flavourful and hearty. You'll feel all warm and cozy in the sauna-esque space too. Great atmosphere for an after work drink as well!

If you go one place in Edmonton, go to MRKT.

This has to be the most fabulous place I went to eat and the hands down best food I had all trip.

I had their garden salad which was really fresh, a fabulous light dressing but what really made my meal was the meat soup of the day. It was a prosciutto and bacon soup in a very light broth. It was billed as more of a stew but it was very light and absolutely perfect.

My friend had prawns on a sweet potato mash with chimchurri sauce. I've never had such amazing food in my whole life. It was divine.

The decor of the place was really welcoming. The light wood paneling warmed up the place.  Even though space is at a premium and you are often required to sit next to your fellow diners the atmosphere in MRKT is really welcoming. They have an absolutely fabulous black wood light over the long centre table which I highly suggest you check out. Very nice.

Five out of Five on this one. Decent price point, amazingly fresh food, great service.

Cabin in the woods meets urban minimalism. The pine panels evoke the former, while the large blackboard menu and bare light bulbs emulate the latter. I sampled a number of MRKT's small plates, including gorgonzola custard with apricot preserves (ridiculously smooth with a subdued tang), proscuitto di Parma with baguette (not too salty and seductively supple), Trinidadian soup with crab and corn (spicy, sassy and saucy), and scallops with pesto and pine nuts (poppin' pillows anointed with a herbaceous drizzle). Each creation was well balanced in terms of flavour, colour and texture. I found the waitress to be a bit of a scatterbrain, though; once we were seated it to her ages to take our drink order and when it was time to pay, we waited...and waited...and waited! But! The food alone is enough to warrant return visits.

Holy crap! If you haven't eaten here yet, what the hell is wrong with you?

This place is amazing. I've only been for dinner, but I hear lunch is just as great.

The decor inside is stunning, and modern. It has a great bistro feel, and it's a "seat yourself" kind of place. Menus and water are brought as soon as you sit, and they'll tell you their specials.

Wine selection is great, and their cocktails are so interesting. For people who think their dinner menu is lacking, quality makes up for quantity. While they do have a small selection, everything is top quality, delicious, and just all-around amazing.

The prawns with the sweet potato mash is excellent, as are the salads, the cheese plates, and the crostinis. I also tried to order the mussels one day, but they were out. Instead they had a scallop dish to substitute it, which was delicious...so keep in mind there might be another dish available if mussels are out.

Their creme brulee is also amazing and it changes daily. My husband has tried the cake (said it was a little dry), and the ice cream sundae (delicious, but mix the ice cream into the rum at the bottom...otherwise your in for a boozy surprise!)

We have taken my mother-in-law and brother-in-law and his wife here (when they wanted to go to Earl's)...this place blows Earl's out of the water, and has the same prices (if not cheaper with some dishes).

Whether it's soup and sandwich during your lunch hour or after work for a glass of wine, MRKT is a great new addition to downtown Edmonton's dining options. While a sandwich and soup will set you back about about $15, it's a quality fare and a cut above the chain eateries downtown. Good wine list and decent selection of import beers. The woody design of the place, low lighting and communal table seating make this an intimate spot for a drink before a night on the town.
