Great quality steak - cooked exactly to order

My husband and I recently tried Mr. Mike's in West Edmonton Mall.  They had amazing hockey game specials - so we started out with 2 appetizers - nachos and panko breaded shrimp.  Unfortunately both left us desiring something with more flavor.  Of note, these items were not regular items on the menu but only hockey specials - so I don't think a whole lot of thought had gone into them.  We had also tried to order wings but they were "out of wings."

    On to dinner...

I ordered a medium rare steak with Alaskan King Crab and my husband ordered a Sirloin with sauteed mushrooms and clam chowder to start.

The clam chowder was PHENOMENAL!  And trust me, I am one picky seafood girl... originally from Seattle!  The chowder was made from scratch - delish - and a large portion!

Unfortunately... waited and waited and waited for our steaks.  We hadn't complained yet but the server came by and apologized and said it would only be a few more minutes and approximately 15 minutes later the manager came by and apologized and said that he would be taking care of the entire bill and that our steaks would be arriving shortly.  He noted that they had "run out of baked potatoes..." that seemed a little odd to me... hold up two $30 steak dinners over 1 potato... they probably could have thrown a potato in the microwave for all we cared at that point.

However, more than an hour after our initial order the steaks arrived and they were AWESOME!  Tender, juicy, and cooked to perfection!

The customer service was great and we truly appreciated the manager recognizing the incredibly long time we had waited for our meal without even asking to speak with him and comping our meal.

We will definitely return and give them another chance... the steak was cooked to perfection!

I was in Edmonton for work, and being that it was my first time, I wanted to check out West Edmonton Mall.  While there, a colleague and I thought we would have some Alberta steak.  So, we tried Mr. Mike's.  Oh.  Dear.  God.  It was one of the worst meals I ever had.

The steak was disgusting (very tough and chewy...and was cooked correctly to medium rare).  I guess perhaps I was hoping to have a real steak-moving-experience with Alberta beef.  Oh, how wrong was I.

The real kicker of the evening was when the waitress took our order and said that the seasonal vegetable was onion rings.  I almost laughed as I thought it was a joke.  It wasn't.  It was January.  But...onion rings?!  Wow.

West Edmonton Mall's Bourbon Street is lined with restaurants, yet my boyfriend and I never seem to be able to find one to eat at. Last night we tried Mr. Mike's Steakhouse by virtue of its menu listing, ironically, the cheapest & best-sounding vegetarian options on the strip - never mind that there were only 4 'v' tags to be seen.

The chain prides itself on its 'West Coast' attitude: i.e. laid back and unpretentious, and while the atmosphere tilts toward hip and upscale on the surface, the in-house brew's slogan ("One Horny Beer") makes the clientele they're aiming for pretty obvious.

We split the Cascadia Salad - a bed of mixed greens topped with honey-roasted pecans, dried cranberries, crumbled goat cheese and a grapefruit-ginger vinaigrette - to start. Super yummy, although the dressing was pretty intense.

Gardenburgers were next, and Mr. Mike's actually serves up a pretty great veggie burger. They're topped with lettuce, tomato and pickle, served on a soft-yet-crispy toasted garlic baguette, and slathered with "special sauce" - a kind of smoky mayo. On the side was a generous helping of fries, far too many for me to handle.

Generally speaking, Mr. Mike's isn't what I'd call a destination but when you're in the mall, not carnivorously-inclined, want to sit down somewhere and are faced with a choice between pasta at Boston Pizza and crummier pasta at the Old Spaghetti Factory, a veggie burger at Mr. Mike's is not a bad call.

This restaurant is very west coast. I loved it! I wasn't too sure what to expect from the exterior - looked kind of uppity but with a name like Mr. Mike's, how uppity could it be? It's not pretentious at all, though it does kind of hint that it would be. I was very impressed that I went in there on my own after an evening of shopping and was led to a lovely booth seat. It was great to have the space for my purchases.

I ordered the Antler Ale, their "own horny brew" as the menu says. It was pretty impressive when the tall 22oz beer mug arrived. I ordered a bowl of clam chowder but hung on to the menu just in case. I wasn't sure how hungry I felt. The soup was awesome. Great portion size. You have a choice between cup or bowl size and I chose the latter but still didn't expect it to be so big. It was perfect. From there, I skipped straight to dessert. I'd overheard the waitress mentioning desserts to the table beside me so I asked to see a dessert menu. I went for the blueberry crumble which was again larger than I'd expected. It was delicious! The prices are very reasonable for what you get.

I didn't find it too bright, though I went there at around 8:30pm. I liked the modern rock music playing from the speakers. I was seated pretty close to the kitchen and could sort of hear their music and mayhem. It sounded like the kitchen staff were pretty young but having a good time and enjoying their jobs - which is something rare in Alberta these days.

This place had a confused business concept going on. We ordered one appetizer and a beer and then left because we were so unimpressed. It looks like a nice pricey steakhouse from the outside, but inside itâs got too many things going on. The place is spacious but the lighting is super bright, not soothing and ambient at all. When you look up you can see cheap rafters and exposed ceiling. Their playing music youâd hear on The Bear rock radio station and the crowdâs young â" 16 year olds on first dates. Not to mention, the calamari wasnât good at all, and our server looked like he had just entered the work force and couldnât wait to get off work to hang with his friends. If this place just picked one thing and went with it, theyâd stop confusing customers and attract the ones who want to be there.
