The banter alone will make me visit time and time again. They'll keep you on your toes as you make your selection, there's no doubt!

Once I was told that there was an entire display case for soft cheeses, I was swooning. Cheeses were brought out, tastes were given, choices reflected and decided and my budget was kept in tact. (And now, I can't help but think I too need a wire cheese cutter for my butcher's block here at home!)

Mount Pleasant Cheese might not have as many choices as a space like Les Amis Du Fromage, but what they lack in amount, they certainly make up for in taste! From French Canadian cheeses to across the pond and to the UK, the tastes did not disappoint. And, following their advice, I left them unrefrigerated until I needed these tasty wedges later the same afternoon. The second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth tasting round just kept tasting better and better.

Having the labels with wine selections was a great addition. On any other day I would have been all over them -- but this day, these blocks were destined for a baby shower!

    NOTE: CLOSED UNTIL NOVEMBER 2010.
    NEW MANAGEMENT.

This is an awesome little shop. The staff are very knowledgeable, all-Canadian cheeses, lactose-free options, and a blog (!).

Well we all know by now I am a huge cheese fan, and when I was reading Vancouver magazine awhile back they were talking about 101 things you need to eat in vancouver before you die, and in this list was a cheese from this shop called the Hercule de charlevoix.  Needless to say they were out when we stopped in.  I was pleasantly surprised that in the shoppe ALL, and I mean all of the product is produced in Canada, the girl behind the counter even went as far as to suggest they may be the only shop in Canada that does this.  I agreed because most shops I have been into run the full gambit of the world....do they make cheese in Cameroun?   They have only been around for 5 months but seem to be right on track with other places I have been.  They allowed us to taste their wares and answer any questions we had about the cheese.  I kinda felt their knowledge was not as full as other stores but I think in time when they season as a company, it will grow.  I was also excited to hear that if you go to their website you can sign up for there newsletter and with this subscription you are entitled to 15% off any purchase over 25 dollars for the rest of your life! WOW!  I am signing up within the hour.    And I know people it is the small things in life but I found it fascinating that on their receipts they give a brief description of the cheese you bought, cause I know when I get home sometimes I forget what the heck I bought and if I liked it I am out of luck!

    Today's take home:
Sauvagine- salty soft wash from Quebec
Capromonte - crumbly goats pride from BC
Chevre Noir-  hard tournevent from BC

I was so happy when they opened up because this place is only a 5-minute walk from my house.  The cheese varieties are amazing and the staff is very knowledgeable, patient, and friendly.  I no longer have to travel to the other side of town for buffalo mozzarella, JOY!  Along with the kaleidoscope of cheeses, they also carry a stock of preserves, crackers, and other accompaniments.

So other than Les Amis Du Fromage, Whole Foods and Granville Market, this is another place to hit for gourmet, artisinal cheeses.  Stocking a range of over 150 varieties from across Canada and the world, this is truly a cheese lovers paradise. Not only cheese, but advice about pairing suggests is served up by the staff: wine, crackers, jams, compotes and such.  Even if you're new to cheese culture, you should experiment here.
