    Wow!

Excellent food, incredible service, Mother Webb's has become an institution in this area, and for good reason. Funny, I used to drive by everytime I drove home to Cape Breton, I used to eat at the Auld's Cove Big Stop, but now after all these years I always stop at Mother Webb's, it's just so great, trust me on this one folks!

Mother Webb's is a pretty well-known tourist trap for anyone who's driven out to Cape Breton.  The signs start miles out, it's got that sort of tackiness that makes people know exactly what you're talking about.  I've been passing it literally for years and have never actually been, but last week we decided to find out what the hype was about - and to settle that age old question, can you actually get a decent steak dinner for $10 (plus tax, tip, drinks, whatever?)

Turns out, you can.  Sort of.  The folks that run this place have the upsell down to a science.  Service is prompt and friendly, and the young women working don't miss a beat in suggesting add ons.  Even the menu (which needs some editing, the spelling is atrocious), leads this.  Draft beer, $3.99 - but why not try our amazing onion rings with one?  Brilliant!  It worked on me, I have to admit.

Now, I had "Mother's Best" dinner, which is NOT the $10 steak, but my wife did have have the $10 iteration.  The steaks were modest in size as you'd expect, but very tender, very well seasoned, and very flavourful - and cooked exactly as ordered.  They come accompanied with excellent coleslaw and a good sized baked potato (fries are an option, we passed.)

After dinner, we took the suggestion of apple pie - and again, it was great.

Downsides: there is literally NOTHING green on the menu.  No salads, no veggies, nothing.  It's kept rather spartan probably to keep the speed of service up, and they do do that very well.  That's really the only thing I can say that was a little bit of a drawback.

Overall, worth a trip.  The menu has a few other interesting options including a scallop burger, but the steaks are nothing to scoff at really.

It's an easy stop right on the highway with some clever signs to draw in the tourists heading up to Cape Breton.  The steak we had was pretty bad, a thin cut and really tough.  I ordered it medium rare and it came to me well done.  The fries were ok.  The scallop sandwich came with some smaller fried scallops on a bun.  It was pretty tasty.  All in all, its a pretty typical roadhouse with below average chow.
