The name certainly doesn't inspire much confidence, and the park, not far from Capilano Mall looks humble enough. But Mosquito Creek Park is the beginning of a very cool little urban trail that makes for an easy hike in all kinds of weather. In summer, the creekside walk is pleasantly shady, while in spring and fall, the treetops protect you from the rain.
I've only been on the lower part of the trail, which goes under Highway 1 at Westview Shopping Centre and lets out somewhere near Edgemont Village. There's apparently also a set of upper trails, also called Mosquito Creek, that are more dog-friendly. Nevertheless, I think you can have dogs (on leash) in the lower trails, and cycles are also permitted on these wide gravel trails. Everyone play nice and get along...
The actual creek has undergone a lot of preservation efforts in the past few years, so the trails are mainly fenced off to protect vegetation and wildlife. They've done some nice work with little interpretive signs along the way, so you can read about salmon habitat preservation and that sort of thing.
It's a good walk - about an hour or so to Edgemont - but not too tough, so little kids might enjoy it too. -

The park & playground seem kind of lame from the road, but the preschoolers love the little playgrounds, & combined with the creek & trails behind (not particularly known for its mosquitoes) it's easy to spend a few hours here. (Note to dog owners though - PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOG/S. This is one of the worst areas I know for stepping in dog poop. =(

On a half sunny, half cloudy day, we decide to trek out to West Van to spend the afternoon. It's conveniently located right by Marine Drive.
There's a parking lot at Fell & 16th St, and you can start the trail here. The trail is 4kms long, and it's nicely secluded within an urban area.
It's nicely shielded with the tall trees, and the trail runs right along the creek, providing a relaxing environment.
A relatively easy trail, perfect for bringing the dog along!
