Mosaic isn't always the spot for me... there is something about it that feels a little forced. However- a few weeks ago, I did a Monday night outing, and boy oh boy, I was in my glory.
Deliciously fused mojitos are offered at a discounted price on this night of the week, and with the muggy summer weather, nothing tastes so perfect. A few down the hatch, and I can get past the sultry (but brewmaster) staffers, and into the triphop vibes that I LOVE. This is the kind of music i can vibe to, and with a little reggae in there... well, its a perfect deflector from the not so perfect Monday.
I hope to go back again soon... as once the moon was out, the spot pulsed great energy. People flowed in and out, but it was always a comfortable pace.
Mosaic is working its way up for me, and I'll be back again soon.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Last evening, my sister and I took in a show at ye old Neptune Theatre. The precursor to the performance was a stop by at Mosaic for a libation and good conversation.
We sat at a chic little table in the window by the bar and were greeted by the bartender and server. The music playing was late-80s/early-90s perfection, sending us into story exchanges of junior high dances and driving in cars.
When we ordered our cocktails, I decided on the Jam - an in-house created bevie, including fresh plump blueberries, white cranberry juice, Cointreau and orange liqueur. My sissy couldn't decide so the bartender suggested his favorite, a simple rum brink with fresh lime and syrup.
The drinks were divine, served quickly and made with expertise. We had a lovely catch-up at this hip downtown spot - enjoying the drinks, service, and of course the company! -

Having passed by 'Mosaic' on numerous occasions I assumed it was a high end cocktail lounge offering Scotch I had never heard of, etc... in other words: Out of my price range.
For this reason I was quite delighted when a few girlfriends and I popped into Mosaic last night. The 'L' shaped couch that the 5 of us were able to commandeer made chatting a lot easier than stretching across a table.
I personally recommend the 'Seasonal Berry Mojito'. Mine was raspberry and it was delicious. Not too expensive either at around $5.50. Think white rum, fresh raspberries and crushed mint! mmm! We tried a variety of shots as well and were all impressed with!
I'll be sure to try the food next time I am at Mosaic, but so far they've impressed me with their value, decor and tasty drinks!
ps: The music was a little old school (and not in a good way) - for such a chic spot, you'd expect them to at least be able to get their hands on some Feist or something... -

If I could give a 3 1/2 star rating I would. But for now it is three stars and might go to four down the road. Who knows?
Mosaic is a fairly new spot on Argyle street. Its not just a clever name either. The walls are Mosaic in design and look beautiful. There is an open concept in one part of the bar while another section has a few tables for people who'd like to wine and dine.
I think this is one of those cases where the bar looks like a great idea on paper but the layout just doesn't work in real life. Mosaic's open concept makes it an intimidating place to walk into since everyone will be looking at you the minute you walk in. And I'm not a shy person. But this place still makes me a bit timid. They also don't have a lot of seats available thanks to their open design.
But enough about the space. Its time to talk about the food. Its pretty good. And I am impressed at their pricing. I especially love their Mini Burger Trio at $9. I wish they weren't so Mini but its not too bad. Their deserts are around $2-$3 more than other restaurants on Argyle but they are pretty good. I would suggest the Double Fudge Brownie if you are willing to pay $7 for it.
Mosaic definitely got everyone's attention with its beautiful look when it opened a few years back. But they remind me of a bright and shinny fishing hook used to catch fish. They definitely catch you and bring you in, but like the boat of a fisherman, you then realize you aren't going to have a pleasant experience.
The staff are friendly, not too conversational with strangers but pleasant enough. All in all they have created a beautiful looking bar/restaurant. But I think they lost points in functionality and food pricing. But there are some things they can turn around that would add some stars and I hope they do that soon. -

There are typically two types of evenings that lead me to Mosaic. There are the nights that start and end pretty tame, and are mainly spent hanging out with friends on the comfy lounge furniture for a few hours. These are the nights that I'm very aware of the price of drinks (a bit pricier than most cocktail places) but also the beautiful decor that Mosaic has to offer.
It's a very modern style lounge in every aspect, the furniture, the layout, the color palate and the young clientele add to the sophisticated yet fun cocktail party atmosphere.
The other nights that I end up at Mosaic happen whenever my best friend from high school comes into town and we grab a cheap meal and yummy drink at her favorite of our old stomping grounds.
There aren't any messy nights at Mosaic, this on the classier end of the Halifax bar scale. The price of the drinks luckily lends itself to limited consumption because no one likes to embarrass themselves in a room of people sipping fancy cocktails.
