What a great little hotel - wish there were more pictures on the website to show how cute it actually is! Gorgeous sitting room on the second floor and great atmosphere. I'd love to come back and stay again soon! Very central to the down town, easy walk down to the river front and loads of fun pubs and restaurants.

This hotel has a lot of promise but lacks in a few areas.
The good? It has as lot of character and ambience -- rooms are decorated nicely, there's a great sitting area on the second floor, it has a lot of charm.
The bad? I'm not usually nitpicky but there was a sign listing their free valet parking -- but when I pulled up, there was no one to be found, whether a valet or a bellhop. It wasn't a big deal, but for a small hotel like this I assumed there would be someone to help with bags. Or at least a notice that you should park your car there, and they'll move it later.
Also, the "water" noise when an adjoining room would use their shower was terrible. Was trying to sleep at ~1am when someone used their shower for about an hour -- I'm a pretty heavy sleeper but the noise was quite loud and very annoying.
It's a very pretty hotel, but I'm not sure I'd stay again if given the opportunity. The noise from the pipes alone is enough to keep me away. -

This is the second time we have stayed at the Montvale, with the first time being approximately two years ago. It is a boutique hotel with an antique ambiance. The room was large enough for a coffee maker and refrigerator, but instead they chose to utilize the space with an overpriced selection of snacks and bottled water. The rooms are very dark, except for when the sun comes up as there are not black-out curtains, only wood shutters that do not close enough to block the light. (We were awake anyways due to the noise.)
The mattress and linens were comfortable, but the pillows were lumpy--and there were only three. That seemed like an odd number (pun intended). Do couples fight over the third pillow???
The water pressure was good, but they skimped on the towels, as there were two bath towels, two hand towels, but only one wash cloth. The soap was like washing with a Chicklette. There were two small, skinny shelves in the bathroom. There was no where to put one overnight kit, better yet two. Whomever designed this hotel bathroom must not have ever stayed in a hotel. Boutique style should not mean a lack of basic comforts.
The room seemed clean. I dropped a small potato chip on the floor. It was clearly visible in the center of the room (not in a corner). I left it to see if it would be there after the maid service. It was there after the room was cleaned, but it was broken as the maid must have stepped on it. That would mean that the maid did not vacuum the room, or even check the floor.
The worst part of the stay was the night noise. There are train tracks within spitting distance, and they blow their horns as they transit the city. The nearby bars empty their glass bottles into the recycling bins in the parking lot below at 1:50am, and the garbage truck empties the dumpster at 3:49am. The freeway is close, so sirens were very audible. We were on the third floor, but the noise was loud enough to wake us. There is also no way to turn off the heat/air conditioning fan that blows right onto the bed. So whether we had one pillow or four, with the night noise and the fan, there was no sleep had during our stay.
They have coffee on the second floor in the morning. I got the last cup of burnt and nasty tasting coffee. If a hotel is not going to have coffee service in the room, they should at least serve fresh coffee and maintain the area.
The front staff were friendly, but one of them could not tell me where the ice machine was located. The carpets in the common areas are stained, which gives the hotel an grubby feeling. One of the staff members should be ready to open the front door when guests are coming through with luggage. It would also be nice if they offered to take our bags to our room.
Since I was traveling on business--and like to sleep--I will not stay here again. If we were in Spokane for pleasure, I doubt we would stay here, either. -

Did not meet basic standard for operation of a hotel, could not stay here.
On the way back from Montana to Seattle called for a reservation on Sat, the 5th of May. They gave us a reservation for a hotel room and we arrived at 10 pm. I left the car with my girlfriend in it at the valet parking area in front and went to check in. After running the card and signing the paperwork, the kid behind the desk informed me that the key machine did not work and when we needed to go to the room they would let us in.
I asked if he was telling me that we wouldn't be getting a room key and he said yes.
I asked if he was telling me I was paying $180 (actually a little more) a night for a room with no room key and he said yes.
I then said back the transaction out we couldn't stay there and the kid said he didn't know how. We waited a short time for someone more knowledgeable and the transaction was undone correctly and we went to search for another hotel in Spokane on Cinco De Mayo.
It was then I realized that we had been parked at the valet parking area for 15 minutes and nobody had come to park the car - pretty sure that wasn't going to work out well. -

Front desk guy gave us hideous advice to park under the bridge on Madison, across from the City Gate, that he did all the time. So safe. He did it all the time!
After a lovely night at the lovely Hotel Montvale, and a pedestrian continental breakfast (really, the Waffle Iron of Cheap Motels?) at the Catacombs we left to find our Landcruiser had the passenger window smashed out and multiple irreplaceable and expensive items jacked out of our rig.
Buzzkill. Thanks front desk guy! Didn' t see your rig there. Here's a suggestion, and unless you are a ringleader in a smash and grab crew using your front desk knowleldge to tip them off and pull in a big cut, don't tell hotel guests about dangerous crack alley parking. Duh. Duh. Duh.
Nice downtown revitalization. So awesome. -

On my way back from Montana I decided to give this hotel a try with my girlfriend. It's located in downtown Spokane, and is about a block from the Davenport Hotel. It's within easy walking distance to anything in the downtown area. (which isn't big by the way).
This is a boutique hotel, so if you're expecting a bunch amenities DON'T. But is very nice. Although one review said that the hotel is 5 years old, it was actually build in 1899 and remodeled 5 years ago. It still retains a old feel to it which I like. The Montvale also has a warm feel to the place. There is a small single front desk downstairs. There isn't any self parking at the hotel, so you're either gonna have to find a garage or use their valet parking. The second floor of the hotel has sitting area, with a fireplace, and couches. And if your a coffee fiend there is a free coffee/mocha/latte machine on the second floor (the girlfriend really appreciated this in the morning).
The room we had was nice, but it did still show a little of its 1899 beginings, which I liked. Everything in the room was nice and clean. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. I did notice that the bed was just a double size, even though I thought I was getting a queen size. Oh well. There was a TV in the corner with all the latest and greatest cable shows on. The bathroom had white tile on the floors and taupe colored walled. The bathroom also had a shower/tub combination. Nothing outstanding, but easily liveable.
The hotel sits on a fairly busy street so you can definitely hear noises coming from outside. Of course when I stayed there construction crews decided to start setting up that morning at 3:00 AM. This wasn't the hotel's fault obviously. To say I was a little annoyed was an understatement. My girlfriend called downstairs and they sent up some ear plugs, thank goodness. I have to say I really really appreciated the service they gave us.
Overall I would say my stay at the Montvale Hotel was good. It's a hotel in a great location with reasonable rates. It's definitely worth the visit. If I visit Spokane again I will probably stay at this hotel. -

Menlo Park, CA
Was in the area visiting (REALLY don't like Spokane but we were trying to find something good in the area). Stayed here two nights, as it has one of the best prices in downtown Spokane. Very nice homey building, resembling an old English study. Comfortable rooms etc, just a few problems: Parking sucks...valet is $15 a day, but they told me I could park in 10 hr. parking down the street, so I checked the area out...Um no. Go down a few blocks and you are suddenly in abandoned-buidling crack-land. No way would I park there. SO I sprung for the valet, and since being downtown we walked everywhere, it was fine- just more $$ than I planned on spending. The other problems are: We slept in, but were heading out by 11AM after the first night there. I put the "please make up room" sign on the door, but when we got back later the room wasn't made. The front desk guy said the maids leave in the afternoon. Huh? Well they were there when we left, so they need to be more thorough and check all rooms before they clock out. We had to ask for more towels etc.
Lastly, we got locked out of the hotel at 1:30 AM. There was a sign on the main door saying that it is locked at 2AM. WTF? How can a hotel lock out its guests? It was cold and we were pissed.
Anyway, the problem was quickly fixed- we called the number on the sign and they came and opened the door very quickly. Still, they really need a 24hour doorperson.
Otherwise, the hotel is a good choice if you are going to be in the area. -

I just loved staying in the Montvale Hotel. They recently renovated and did a fantastic job with the decorating. It doesn't look like much when you first come in, but the second level where the rooms are is awash in beautiful colors, fabrics, and furniture. The room I stayed in was perfect--the bed firm but comfortable, the bathroom was nice and big. I could've stayed for weeks! The pictures on the website don't do the hotel justice--in reality it's much prettier.
The only thing that I would change is the breakfast could stand to be a little better. However, right down the street is the Rocket Cafe, which serves great food, so you might as well go out for breakfast. -

Portland, OR
Usually, we stay with family or friends in Spokane, but we opted for some privacy this time and bedded down at the Montvale for 3 nights this past weekend. The location is great - right downtown, close to RiverPark Square, restaurants, bars, and a movie theatre. Valet parking is convenient and reasonable at $15/day (there is no self-parking option here, though).
Our room was clean and cozy, with a comfy bed and walk-in shower (yay!). Although we didn't order any room service items, the menu from the Catacombs Pub downstairs looked delicious and reasonably priced. Unless you ordered some fancy dinner, you could get a tasty midnight snack for under $10...that's hard to find in room service!
Some complimentary breakfast items were available on the 2nd floor, near the neat-O, self-serve coffee/espresso machine. Cookies were also available here during the afternoon and man, they were good. The full complimentary spread is offered in the Catacombs Pub and it includes muffins, hard-boiled eggs, waffles, scones, juice, yogurt, bagels, etc. Not bad, but not amazing.
The only complaint I have is one that cannot be remedied, unless the hotels moves to a less desirable location (not recommended) or I stay during a time when downtown Spokane is vacant (not likely). The noise from the street was deafening, even when we weren't trying to sleep. We kept checking our windows to make sure they weren't open, but they were closed tight. Still, we could hear every word of the people below on the street...and we were on the 3rd floor. First, the fire engines (there must have been 10 of them?) went by at 5am. The next night, the drunken crowds bailed from the pool hall next door at 2am. It's cool, I mean...we like to party, too. Perhaps if the hotel management could persuade the owners to invest in double-pane windows or something? Anything might help decrease the noise level.
Regardless of the noise, we played hard, so we slept well and enjoyed our stay here. We'll definitely be back and plan to recommend it to our friends...but we'll advise they bring ear plugs. -

Sacramento, CA
Ahhhhh. The Montvale. I visited Spokane to spend time with some friends and get out of the Sacramento heat. Well, that plan was foiled because Spokane was not the nice Pac Northwest Weather of past trips...but HOTTER than HELL. Eh. Such is life. Thankfully my room at The Montvale had some serious sweet-sweet air conditioning.
I had stayed in The Montvale once before on another trip and loved the dark woods, rich warm colors, and friendly staff. I was not disappointed. It was as beautiful as before, maybe a tad showing its age but I believe that added to the character...this is not a new building by any means.
Having gotten a great deal through http://Hotels.com I didn't expect to get one of their better rooms so I wasn't upset when I was put in a second floor room overlooking West 1st (a busy main street, which indeed you can hear...but I always travel with earplugs.) However it was still very well appointed with a smaller plasma TV, CD player, large dark wood writing desk and a burgundy velvet chair that did a great job catching my clothes each night (just like my blue velvet chair at home, at least it's *rumored* to be blue.) The bed is the main attraction at The Montvale. Huge and fluffy and pure white, like a cloud of comfy and I love that they have white duvets...I'm always ooged out by "Vegas" style red floral bedcovers because G-d knows what's on them.
The room is rounded out with a very nice oversized bathroom with white tile (again, appealing to my clean-thing) with brushed chrome fixtures. Everything is very Crate & Barrel circa 1998 before they started to act like the upscale Ikea and went modern. Or, yeah, Pottery Barn-ish. Iron, ironing board, good sized closet (if I'd used it), blow dryer, and the Worlds Most Drying toiletries...my hair is still recovering.
In all, if you're looking for a very comfortable and well appointed place to stay this is it. I also like that it's a small boutique hotel with very personalized, discreet, very friendly service. Maybe a tad too friendly but that's an entirely different story.
At night the art gallery a few doors down projects old silent films onto the wall of the building across the street and from my room I could see these perfectly, unfortunately I was, well, not looking out the window but partying with my friends. So, no, not unfortunately!
I really can't wait to go back! -

Carlsbad, CA
Nice little hotel in Spokane, think quaint 3-star and you will not be disappointed. No room service, no self-parking, one front desk person operation. But what you get in return is reasonable rates in a nice old-style hotel with a mezzanine, sitting area, good size rooms with an unique layout overall. It is a little noisy but I m a sound sleeper and I was out making some of the noise. Complimentary breakfast available in the morning, cookies available in the evening, and they have the electric self-serve coffee machine.
If I was in Spokane again and I was looking for a rustic feel this is definitely the place. -

What a waste of real estate! The Hotel's website descriptions are all hopes unrealized. Yes the building is old with tons of character and great architectural bones. We stayed one night in a parlor suite. Our room consisted of two spacious rooms and bathroom all with high ceilings and large windows. But for a hotel that is only five years old, it was already rundown--filthy carpets, cheap tile, frayed bath towels, Ikea fixtures in the bath that pulled off the wall, insufficient lighting in the room to even read a book, dirty breakfast utensils, and just poorly cleaned all-around. Service is also lacking--we called for a bellman to get our luggage and one never arrived; they ran out of breakfast food one hour before close of breakfast--it all seemed haphazard, disorganized and understaffed.
I've traveled extensively in U.S. and abroad, and the Montvale resembles an old European Hotel. With better cleaning and more attention to detail, this could be a gem. Sadly now it is just a dilapidated old hotel. -

Great scratch hot pot and calimari. How terrific to find a smart, tasty little restaurant in this hotel. Don't miss the opportunity to try their menu.

For the price, the Montvale is well worth the stay. The restaurant in the basement is worth a visit even when not staying in the hotel.
I would highly recomend it. -

Loved the look and feel of this hotel only thing is if your looking for a nice quiet place to sleep this is not the one with the late night drinkers and the train blowing its horn @ midnight. Still very cool to be right down town.........even saw a movie being made right outside........heard it was Snoop dog!

Walla Walla, WA
On paper this hotel is amazing--great location (close to downtown shopping/bars/etc), great decor, reasonable price. I enjoyed everything about it exept for one HUGE thing--the noise. The windows must be circa when the building was built because you can hear everything outside...and unfortunately it's on busy street and the train is about a block away. During the night the train passed about once an hour. I'd probably stay again but would bring earplugs!!
