I have been visiting Montri pretty much since it opened, and it has been consistently good and consistently in the "above average" price range.
They have just reopened, after change in ownership. Apparently, Montri sold the place and went back to Thailand. It is now "Taste of Thai" and I loved the taste. It was strange to walk into a place that was almost completely empty, yet we decided to live dangerously - and had a fabulous dinner.
They now have alcohol, yet the menu is not printed yet. Rebirthing pains.
The food was awesome - at least as good as I remember it under Montri's. We both opted for fairly hot (as in peppers) and definitely felt it, with a semi-gentle burn in the hot and sour soup, which still allowed us to enjoy the richness of the flavours and other spices.
For main dish, both my friend and I had vegetarian curries, and they were both absolutely delicious. The nice added bonus is the fact that the menu has brown rice, which worked very well with the rest of the food. -

ATTENTION: Montri's is now closed!!!!
WTF? I used to love Montri's. I went there last week, only to realize it wasn't Montri's anymore. The decor was the same, the menu was Thai food...but the menu said 'Taste of Thai' on it. So, we asked our waitress, "Is this Montri's?". Her reply: "The company changed last week". Oh, and they don't have a liquor licence. There's a tiny note in the window that says BYOB. Weird. -

This was my third, and reluctant, time at Montri's. Never again.
We were a group of 8, with a reservation. I've never been crazy about this place, but the location is close to UBC and convenient for this kind of group outing, so I thought I'd give it another try. To start, we ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of beers, and 2 orders of soup to share. The waiter then curtly insisted/mandated that we must order 8 entreés since we are 8. But some of us aren't that hungry, I meekly protested, he huffed and walked away. In the confusion, we ended up ordering 8 entreés anyway.
Based on food alone, this place might deserve an "eh, it's average" 3 stars. Based on service alone, this place deserves nothing better than "WTF" -5 stars. Really.
After a so-so dinner service, we asked to see the dessert menu. The waiter said, "notimefordessert." What? "notimefordessert!" he barked back. Sorry, say again? "notimefordessert!" Finally, I got it: "no time for dessert?" He rolled his eyes and walked away. We were flabbergasted, so asked for another waiter and asked what was going on. He told us there's another group coming in and that we didn't have time for dessert. I asked, what time is that group arriving? He looked at his watch and snorted, "15 minutes." I just stared at him, in shock, and he said, "ok, ok, you can have dessert." By the time he brought the dessert 15 minutes later, the restaurant was half empty and you know what, no other group ever came. And they never apologized for treating us like shit.
Seriously, does anyone expect to be treated this way? If they're swamped and need to rush us, sure, I'd understand, but not even an apology? The way the waiters looked at us, you'd think we were gum stuck on the bottom of their shoes.
Again, never again. And I beg you not to toss a penny their way. -

Some restaurants..they don't exactly have cutting edge decor, nor are they really trendy, but you like it as soon as you walk in? Yeah...that's Montri's!
What Montri's lacks in decor, it makes up for in tastiness.... Peanut chicken with spinach and broad noodles with beef? Yes please. Good price, friendly folks and a surprisingly good wine list make this westside restaurant worth a stop. This gem will make your date think you've got great taste, and a nose for value. Both great qualities in a future mate, right? -

I ordered the chicken with spinach and peanut sauce (chicken flying angels) and it was good, although nothing special about the dish compared to other places I have had it. My girlfriend's dish was the same: good but not special. Compared to similar cuisine from Banana Leaf there is nothing that would make me recommend Montri's over Banana Leaf.
Service was friendly and put up with our party taking forever to order thanks to rather late arrivals (granted the restaurant was not that busy so there would be no reason to expect them to be pushy). -

We brought a visiting speaker from NASA here for a BC Food Technologists meeting I was hosting. The food was excellent and the quality was great. Nothing was too heavy or too anything. It was just right.
Went there again a few months later when one of my high school teachers came to visit and everything was, once again, delicious!
We had the standards: red curry chicken, coconut rice, chicken satay.. .and I can't remember what else. Must have been some veggie dish in there some where.
The interior settings seem fancier, so probably good for a "meeting the parents" kind of a dinner. -

I liked Montri restaurant, but this time I noticed that the name of the restaurant has changed. The food was not quite:
Tom Yam soup with seafood: tasted good, but I felt the texture of seafood somewhat unnatural.
Stake: the side vegetable was just like microwaved mixed vegetable.
Fried rice noodle: not particularly tasty
The server was friendly.
Overall, I was not happy with the quality of food here. -

Best Yum Woon San (noodle salad) in the city, by far. Go there for this alone and you will be satisfied. The rest of their menu is solid as well. Food is less greasy than other places I've tried. The best thai in Kitsilano, in my humble opinion.
This is a nice restaurant, a bit fancier than most other thai places around. Service is warm and friendly. No delivery but they take pick-up orders. -

My former coworker raved about this place - and since we used to live in the area at a time, we decided to try it out one time. I called to make a reservation, and was told that they only have 45 minutes slot for us. In all my time (and I go to restaurants a lot) have I not heard this phrase when making a reservation.
We were hungry and curious and went anyways - the food was OK (nothing to write home about), and the service was crappy - we were rushed to leave!
There are way too many good places in this city to eat - there is no need to pay in order to experience this type of "service". Montri, the owner, should really take this as a note. -

Excellent staff. Montri, the owner, is a gift to the neighbourhood. Good thai food served with graciousness and enthusiasm. Worth a the trip down Broadway for.

Having heard such glowing reviews of this place, I was rather surprised that the food was very, very average. Perhaps I caught them on an off night.
