    A park with
    a lot of
    history, statues, cannon
    and fires

Montmorency Park or Parc Montmorency Is located on the heights of Quebec City and has fantastic views of the St. Charles River and the rest of the city. At present it looks like a typical Quebec Park with lots of statues and cannon. Quebec City must have more cannon per population than any city in the world.

However the park is also a place dripping with history. Because of the great view and strategic location, official buildings have been built here for centuries. This was the site of the first Parliament of the Province of Canada and regular parliamentary sessions were held here throughout the years.

Unfortunately, for various reasons, the buildings kept burning down and new ones had to be built. Fires were very common and the were the demise of many buildings in antiquity but it seemed whatever was built on this particular spot was guaranteed to burn down within a few decades. They finally decided it would be better just to make the area a park.

That was a wise decision because the park it a great place for a short walk or just to look around. As is so common in Quebec lots of plaques and signs explaining the history are scattered around the park and of course the ubiquitous cannon and statues are interesting to look at. In the warm weather a cool breeze is always blowing and in the winter a cruel, stinging slap across the face never lets you forget that you are in Canada.
