I spent a lot of time going back and forth to the North Shore last summer and every time I'd meet people at the Quay we'd hit up Montgomey's. For $21 I could get 2 pieces of Halibut and chips with two sodas. Super fresh, super yummy, super awesome. I think it's possible they are the best fish and chips I've had in Vancouver.

Best fish burger I've ever had before.  Crispy coating but melt in your mouth fish.  Eating one of these will turn you off frozen fish sticks or filet o' fish for life (if you haven't already...  what's wrong with you)
Fries were also made fresh to order and delicious.
Hard to beat the view... there's often live music on the weekends near the fountain.

Eating fish and chips while sitting sea side? Enough said.

I'm a sucker for the calamari here. It's so much better than most you'd find elsewhere and for cheap. This is the only place I eat at whenever I'm at the Quay - it's like a treat for my effort spent crossing the Inlet!

There is a lot to like about Montgomery's:

First, it's one of the very (and I mean VERY) few fish and chips places I've found in North America which even lists mushy peas on the menu. (I know, I know: without mushy peas, it's not even worth calling it "fish and chips", but try telling most places that.)

Second, unlike too many places, which try to get away with serving up nuked frozen fish filets, I could see into the kitchen as one of the cooks picked up a piece of fish and dipped it into the batter after I ordered it. (Not frozen, not preformed, we're talking real actual fish here.)

Third, you get to choose what kind of fish you want: cod, red snapper, or halibut. (Or, if your definition of "fish" isn't limited to kosher choices, you can order clams, oysters, prawns, or scallops instead.)

A couple of gripes from me, though: First, I hate crowds, and having half a dozen people push up to the counter in front of me was irritating. (Not that that's Montgomery's fault, but it makes ordering from them less pleasant. Then again, I should have known better than to go to the Quay on a Sunday.)

Second, and this really surprised me, the fish didn't actually taste that fresh. Granted, I probably could have gone for the cod, which is cheaper, or the halibut, which people obviously consider to be the primo fish, so the red snapper might not get ordered as often, simply because it's neither the cheapest nor the "best" option. Still, I was surprised and disappointed to bite into fish no fresher than I could have gotten in a supermarket. (Right across from the frozen fish filets...)

I'm a big fan of fish and chips, big fan.  I think for the first several years of my life that was all I ordered at any restaurant.  This is by far in the top three places I've ever eaten fish and chips at.
The guy behind the counter was really friendly, made small chat with me for a little bit while I was paying.  I could watch him as soon as I'd ordered throw the fish in the batter and get it going.  Talk about cooked when you order.
If I'm ever in North Vancouver again I will make my way back, that's for sure.

This place has, without a doubt, the best fish n' chips I've ever had in my life. It's unbelievable. The fish is fried with a light and crispy coating that's just perfect. The chips are seasoned with a little salt and are equally delicious. A few squeezes of lemon and some tartar sauce and you're in flavor heaven.

The day I went the Cod n' chips was the special, and was $6.90 an order instead of the usual $7.20. Worth every penny.

They actually ran out of fish right after I ordered, so you may want to get there early just in case!

Being so close to the Pacific, you would expect to be tripping over great fish-and-chips places. But alas, that's not the case. WIth one exception - Montgomery's Fish and Chips. In its unassuming location at the South end of the Lonsdale Quay, the family-run gem serves up your choice of fish (my fave, the Two Piece Cod) in a light, not-dripping-oil-like-everyone-else batter that's gently placed on a whopping serving of home-made fries. Add a little malt vinegar, some tartar sauce, and you'll be guaranteed to walk away hurting from a full meal. I've lived from coast to coast in this fine country, and no other F&C place touches Montgomery's. My brood of kids LOVE it too.
