The name, Mr Poutine, made me curious. It sounds a little pretentious, but can they back it up? I thought it was especially likely, given that they are also a fromagerie (Fromagerie du matin) and make their own curds on location.

The basics for a good poutine involve fresh cheese, and fresh crispy fries. The cheese was indeed wonderful (although a little too cold for my taste), but it's really the sauce that makes a good poutine. Unfortunately, that's where Mr Poutine fell short.

We ordered a small poutine, pretty cheap, at $5. The fries were soft, and weren't even all warm inside. My sister, who was with me, noticed right away that their gravy looked and tasted like water, and you can imagine that with their soft fries the whole thing ended up being a mushy mess really quickly. The gravy was also lacking any taste, kind of like a diluted BBQ sauce, and wasn't even salty. It seemed as if no effort was made, as if the cheese would make it great on its own. It didn't.

The restaurant was the bare minimum. Burger king like tables, and a large open space with tons of windows. I loved being able to see the fries being cooked, and the cheese being made. The cashier/service person was nice.

Overall I was very dissapointed. There's an obvious synergy that's possible between a poutine place and a fromagerie, as great cheese is necessairy for a good poutine. Unfortunately, it isn't sufficient. You also need to make minimal efforts to have good fries and have a decent sauce.

I guess there are so many small diners in the area where I can get better poutines that perhaps the only reason for me to go back is to pick up some great curds, and then head home and to cook a poutine myself.

Note: They do have other poutines available, which I haven't tried. They even have another sauce (BBQ) which the waitress told is sweeter and not spicy.
