I've been goimg to Truefitt and Hill for the past 5 years...but decided to give a barber in my neighbourhood a try and i was not disappointed. The trappings are not quite Truefitt, and some of the extras aremissing, but the cut and service were great. Antonio has a new client.

Walked in here with my boyfriend because it's gotten a-ok reviews. (he was the one getting the haircut.) We didn't have an appointment -- just a walk in.
We walk through the doors and first this grumpy lady who's cutting hair looks at us and waits for us to talk -- no "Hi," No "Hello." We asked if they do walk ins. She said " Okay -- sit up there."
So we proceeded to the upstairs lobbyish type space and we weren't greeted with anybody telling us how long it would be. It was quite busy but we didn't know who had appointments and whatnot. We left after 10 minutes of waiting there patiently -- without the haircut.
Nobody talked to us. The Main problem here is communication and costumer service. Don't know how the haircuts were as we didn't stay for them. -

My gut reaction was to turn and walk away.
Why?
Because contrary to what this place's website and reviews suggest, inside the Monsieur awaited not two old-school barbers, but rather two Asian kids with spiky hair and highlights and a nose piercing.
Mind you, I don't have a problem with their being ten years younger than me. But I do have a bit of a problem with their appearance, which seemed most at home with the metrosexual stylist salon I'm precisely trying to avoid.
Anyway, I ignored my gut reaction and went for a haircut.
Long story made short, the kid ruined my haircut, which is simple and traditional, parted on the left, making instead the spiky, gelled mess I used to sport years ago. This despite the fact that I even showed him a picture taken the day after my previous haircut.
I'm not ever going back, and I suggest you don't risk it. Go instead to the Terminal barbershop. Those guys don't just look like professionals -- they are. And they among the best. -

I decided to try this place based on the Yelp reviews and photograph.
Co-owner Sarah cut my hair and did a fine job. After all, she is "the best' barber there. Just ask her! ;-) The post-cut, hot towel on the head was nice, but I didn't really "get" it. A 30-second head massage doesn't really add much.
What I was really looking forward to, but was disappointed with, was the decor. Yes, they had restored 100 year old barber chairs, and the "stations" (cabinets and mirrors) were old timey and ornate, but the vibe didn't carry through to the rest of the shop's decor. They almost seemed out of place in this otherwise modern space.
It's a great location, but a bit of a hike for me, so I doubt I'll go back. If anyone knows of an authentic OLD shop, let me know. -

FORGET ABOUT THE HAIRCUT, the warm steamy towel they wrap around your head at the end is the reason I go to Monsieur. It feels like you leave the earth for a moment till the steam is off!
And Student Special, what else could I ask for with my budget... -

Just got a great cut from Al. I've been searching for a couple years now for a talented barber in Toronto and I have finally found him! Highly recommend that you get a cut at monsieur, you will not be disappointed.
I have been paying $70+ for a cut for years and have never gotten the care and skill that Al offers, for $25!! On top of a great cut, they have also set up a beautiful shop, complete with 150 year old chairs, completely restored to their original glory. Ask al to show you the picture of the chair your sitting in at it's original barber shop home, really cool.
All in all, an awesome experience and an awesome cut..... Oh and he is a master of the straight razor shave too. -

Right at super convenient Bloor & Spadina, Al has got some skills and I'll be a regular here likely.
The interior is done up in the over the top wood-grain-old-school-man-style-luxury and the staff is friendly and knows what they are doing. The music playing is old school soothing instead of the onslaught of action movies on plasma screens I've had to endure lately at $50 haircut establishments (more for the Maxim magazine set).
Note that the new spa options like foot cuts and hand cuts (women call them manicures or pedicures) are also available. There is a student discount for the cut, mentioned in the window which is a super bonus. If you must, park behind the fruit stand across the street. -

Excellent find! Makes you actually enjoy getting your mop chopped. Not your typical barber shop. It's decorated and furnished with cool antiques and barber chairs from before your grandfather was born. Truly a step up from the competition in the neighbourhood. 26 bucks for the haircut.
