Tried this for the first time today- can't go wrong for a by-weight meal which you throw together yourself.

There was only one server for a pretty busy sunday, (probably higher than normal volume due to the SunRun this morning) as we got there around 1 pm and there was only 2-3 other tables, but about 13 others by the time we left.

The server was friendly and pretty laid back at the beginning, and was able to show that he could handle a lot of volume by the end.

The chef/man who cooks everything had a great sense of humor, and for the amount of interactions between servers and guests, it made the experience better.

Overall, prices were decent for a lunch, and it was a neat experience; I wouldn't be opposed to going back, but I prefer to have flavours thrown together for me, so I probably won't be back often.

Came here for a birthday gathering on recommendation of the birthday-girl.  The server was laid back, told us how it all works:  you go get your food, weigh it, get a receipt for the bill (if you guess the weight correctly you apparently get it free - good luck), they cook it and bring it to you.  This is supposed to come with rice, "wraps", and soup.  Sounds simple...epic fail:

    1) There is a different price list for vegetarian versus meat - I didn't have meat and was billed the same price as everyone else (read: decrease tip)
    2) Seafood on the line looked a little scary - I just wouldn't get it
    3) Waitress took our drink order, and one person in our party wanted a drink they were out of "mix".  So she ordered a margarita which NEVER came. Had to follow up with the server, "Oh yeah, we only have strawberry margaritas today".  Well our friend didn't like strawberry so she didn't get anything. (read: decrease tip)
    4) Cook came to deliver 3 plates of our food, he called out a number and we were all confused.  We all looked at our receipts (and yes he stood there for at least a minute).  Finally the cook slammed the plates on the table, and said, "fine you guys figure it out yourselves".  There were 8 of us, and if you've seen "stir fry" you know it's not easy to tell what is what (read: decrease tip)
    5) Ran out of beer, never asked whether I wanted another (read: decrease tip)
    6) "Soup" never came.  When I asked the waitress AFTER she rang up my bill, she said, "oh sorry, my bad, do you want it to go?  No, I would have liked it with my dinner - which sucked.  (read: someone should pay ME now because we're running a tip deficit).

I don't normally slam restaurants, and I try to be as generous (albeit honest) as possible.  I would like to think that if you hate the food, it's partially your fault because you put the stuff in a bowl, someone else just cooked it for you.  But when the overall experience is SO bad, I cannot and will not recommend this place (nor will I ever go back).

My bf got a bad stomach ache after dining here. I ate only Veg. And think that may have been what saved me.

The place is pretty old, could use a real good scrub.

That was the first and last time well eat there.

We have been to the Richmond Mongolie Grill several times. This is the first time we've been to the one on Broadway. Overall, we had a pleasant dinner.

Good stuff: the ingredients that were out for the stir fry all looked pretty fresh and nothing was empty. The hot and sour soup was really good. The staff was pretty friendly. Our dinner was cooked properly and delivered to our table nice and quickly.

Bad stuff: the interior of the restaurant could use an update (but it wasn't dirty by any means). Our server didn't take our coupon amount off the bill at first because we gave it to the women who seated us, not the person who was serving us after that; but they did fix it right away as soon as I pointed it out. My wife said the corn chowder didn't have much flavour.

I read some previous reviews on here where people were complaining about the price. Some people claimed they didn't know what the price was before they filled their bowls. How often do you order something that you don't know the price of if you are concerned about the expense? If you don't know, then ask! $25.90 a kilogram sounds expensive, but when you think that you could fill your bowl with a kilogram of prawns, it doesn't seem too far out there. You could have a meal that costs the restaurant money. That's why it seems high. It has to average out... that's the business.

I remember coming to this place about 10 years ago in my teens and LOVING it.  I was really excited to try it last week...

... and it was one of the worst places I have EVER been to!  The decor alone is so sad and depressing, it's ugly and dirty and just foul.  The clientele were a bit shady, and just being in there was an incredibly depressing experience.  I have never been in such an ugly, horrible atmosphere.  Also it smells like the gas for the grill.

The food selection is OK, but the taste and quality are pretty awful. I had to dig through the chicken to find a few decent pieces without fat or tendons.  The whole meal is mediocre at best... I will never ever ever come here again.

And it was bloody expensive!  At about $20 apiece, it wasn't even close to worth it.  Gross!

Decent amount of food.  Flavour depends on you since you put it together before they cook it for you.  Not terrible, but not amazing either.  If you want something reasonably priced though? Hard to beat.  And if you can guess how much it's gonna cost they'll give you a gift card, too.

Tell me how this place stays in business?  Seriously....I am at a loss at how it does!  As long as I've been working in this area (years upon years) this place remains open.  That really mystifies me!

It's expensive and it's not good.  I remember my first time there, we were on a business lunch and my bowl weighed $30.  I think everyone had a heart attack at the prices and I was sooo embarrassed!  This was over ten years ago or more now.  The second visit I cheaped out and didn't get what I wanted because of the expense.  What's the point in that?  Why go somewhere if you can't eat what you want because it's too expensive and the food is only average quality anyway.

Two visits was it for me and I packed it in, never to return.  I walk by daily and shake my head wondering how it remains open.  I never see more that a table or two occupied in the day.  If you are wondering whether to go, don't wonder....DON"T GO!!!!  Just keep walking...head across the street and get some stir fried Moo Shu pork noodles at Peaceful.  $11 and you'll be stuffed full and happy!

    Worst dining experience EVER!

I went here last night because I was drunk and my date convinced me it was a good idea at the time. I previously talked him out of coming here because of the bad reviews so I really wasn't expecting much but holy shit this place was awful!

We walked in got rudely told to sit wherever so we chose our seat and waited for the waitress. The waitress in general had a bitterness to her, I don't know if she had a bad day or is just bitter but it was obvious she wasn't too concerned about provided quality service. Then came "the soup" we got the corn chowder and my first clue that is would be disgusting was that it was at my table 30 seconds after I asked for it...it tasted like the inside of a tin can!

Then we moved on to dinner, their selection was horrible. Most of the meats were empty and the ones that weren't looked VERY suspect! Their meat selections made me grateful to be a vegetarian, that is until I saw their selection of dried out veggies! The zucchini that has been sitting in my fridge for a week looked fresher then the crap they were serving here! I guess they figure it's all the same once you fry it, but when you have to look at it first it's a bit of a turn off! It ended being $8 each and we both had tiny little platefuls after it was fried!

The cook was a messy hippy-ish looking guy shoved into a while cook's coat, not the kinda person. Not to mention he was wearing shorts and had a scruffy beard which goes against food safe standards. Gross! They also don't cook the food properly, they just leave it there in piles and parts ended up being burnt! I also watched someone at another table pull a 1 ft long hair out of her meal!!!

On top of the nasty food we paid top dollar for the waitress was rude so I muttered something under my breath, she then stormed off and ignored us for the whole remainder of the meal! Now that's what I call service!

If I could give this place 0 out of 5 stars I would!

Came here for a friend's birthday dinner.

The corn chowder was gross. It was completely the taste of instant noodles. I could taste the MSG powder on my tongue just by talking about it. The hot and sour soup was salty and had too much vinegar. Yuck.

You weigh your food and it was like $25.50+ per kg. Let's just say it's too expensive. I think the food made me sick as I had an upset stomach later in the evening and the next morning.

    Will not come here again.

You expect big things and will be met by poor average... this is the beginning of the disappointed relationship between me and the Mongolie Grill.

I went here twice now, usual policy 'if they f' it up the first time give them a second chance' but neither of these two visits wowed me or even remotely satisfied my expectations.

One of my critic points is the price. I went to many Mongolian Grill places and they were either cheaper or all you can eat. The bowl they use are not particulary large either and most veggies and also meat shrinks massively during cooking. The other issues I had with the staff are that (as far as I recognized it during my visits) none of the employees that handled the food had either gloves and/or a cap/hair net to pretend their hair from falling into the food. Incl the chef. May I say gross!?

Maybe that was an exception but anyway... At least the quality of the ingredients as well as the meat selection is pretty decent.

Anyway, 2 visits - no further repeat from yours truly.

For everyone else who wants to try, I would not come out from too far away for this place. It might be ok but not worth the extra drive. It is however conveniently located right next to the Broadway-City Hall Canada Line Station.

    Cheers

    Wait, wait, wait. BISON?!
I dig Mongolian Grills over in Seattle, and I dig them in BC too.
But daaamn, why do we not have the awesome meat selections that BC does?

Had some local friends take us here after the pho place we really were wanting to try was closed unexpectedly. The stoner host/server guy was cool. I got the chowder, not very appealing to me.

I was roughly 80cents off, the chef was impressed :D

Food was good, nothing too impressive and yes, it is spendier then I would have guessed.

I accidently left my dslr on the table when we left and thank god Stoner dude ran after us and returned it to me! It was semi creepy having some random guy try to take a picture of you with a camera just look yours.... ;)

    HORRIBLE.

I went here a couple weekends ago after a dragon boat practice with my teammates. Our main goal was to find the first place that could seat 22 people and to load up on as much delicious food as possible since we were all starving. We split our group up into smaller, more manageable tables and proceeded to order.

At this point, the waitress was kind enough to tell us to sit wherever we wanted. My teammates and I had no problem with that. We lined up to order our food and have it prepared. Afterwards, the waitress served us bowls of soup at our table. I got the corn chowder, and it was horrible. It was bland and tasteless. My friend got the hot and sour soup, and there was nothing hot about the soup other than its temperature. Both soups were extremely watered down. Next came the waiting game.

My table ended up waiting for our food for 30-45 minutes. One of my friends politely asked the waitress where our food was. Her attitude immediately soured and she snapped back at him saying that we were such a huge group and there was only one person cooking. About ten minutes later, our food arrived. At this point, the rest of the team (the 18 other people sitting at other tables) were done eating. The food and meats were overcooked, despite copious amounts of sauce I had added previously. When we paid for our food at the register, I realized that my dish had cost ~$24 because the food was weighed by the gram. Had I known about this previously, I would not have loaded up on veggies and noodles. Furthermore, the waitress tacked on a 15% tip to the meal. Given our terrible service and bland/tasteless food, I would be loathe to give such a high tip for sub-par service and food. And, as it turns out, a teammate at another table had asked the lady about his food too. He was also chewed out by her and given the same reasons as we were. However, since he was sitting in perfect view of the chef, he could see that the chef was taking a cooking break...

    tl;dr:
    Good: lots of seating.
    Bad: Service, Food
Ugly: some of the rudest people I've met at a restaurant
Final verdict: Worst meal I've had in Vancouver :((((( Wouldn't come here, even if it was the last restaurant on earth.

Worst experience at a restaurant. EVER.

Might I suggest, Mongolie Grill, that if you're going to serve food buffet style and CHARGE BY THE WEIGHT, that knowledge should be presented to you (the customer) at the front of the line and not the end. That is honest business, no?!? The Mongolian Grills that I am familiar with charge by the bowl and not the weight and so you can see, your business of doing things the opposite way is completely backwards to my familiarity.

I thought when I walked in, that I had made it abundantly clear to your "greeter," that I was a new customer, a stranger to your pricing with; do we seat ourselves? Do you have menus? Are you self serve? At this point it would be helpful to provide some direction and hospitality. Obviously, I'm clueless and new to your "restaurant."

Had I been aware my noodles were going to cost me a hefty $28, I never would have come to this place to begin with. For thirty dollars, I can get a gourmet meal prepared by a chef that went to culinary school and have it served to my table by a waitor or waitress wearing a suit while lounging in a comfy 4-5 star restaurant with a view, for pity sake.

When I asked to box up the remainder of my meal, which I barely touched due to my loss of appetite at the tremendous rip off I'd just experienced, the "waitress" took my plate back to the kitchen and returned with my leftovers in a golf ball sized container. She threw out more than 3/4 of my food!! What a classy lady (and I say this with tremendous sarcasm).

The Mongolie Grill is the first and only "restaurant" that I didn't even leave tip. Throughly the most wretched "dining" experience I've ever had. I wouldn't mourn its loss at all.... There are far better establishments to patronize than this one!

Even though the ambiance here is romantic, authentic and clean, you don't really want to go here. I know that the huge mural of a Mongolian warrior on the side of the building is cool and enticing, but the bottom line is that the prices are way too high, especially considering that you basically just make your own dinner.

Like most Mongolian eateries, the customer is given a large berth of options for ingredients and sauces, and allowed to assemble it together before it's cooked on a huge circular grill by one of the trained chefs. The problem is that this restaurant charges you by the pound, instead of by the bowl. As most people familiar with Mongolian cuisine will tell you, it's all about pushing the food down in the bowl to make space for more ingredients before it's cooked, and this place curtails that trick by weighing it in before grilling it. Sure, the meal is free if you guess the correct weight, but unless you're feeling particularly lucky, it just seems like one of those fixed carnival games.

The food is good, considering that you do most of the work, but there are so many better places to get your Mongolian fix. I'd suggest one of Vancouver's all-you-can-eat places, so that you can get several small portions and try out the sauces separately, instead of the all-at-once swamp mix.

This place is just awful.  It honestly reminded me of Mr. Mikes - the only thing missing was an ice cream bar with sprinkles.  If it hadn't been for an entertainment coupon, I likely wouldn't have even wasted my time with the place, and even at 50% off I felt ripped off.

Honestly, there isn't a single thing Mongolian about the place.  The ownership and staff appeared European, something I wouldn't even bother to point out if there hadn't been the most confusing items on offer.  Nuts?  Really?  Salmon?  Stir fried?  Fruit?  Why not.  Seriously, why not just throw in M&M's and let the kids stir fry it all up.  Chocolate salmon pineapple with cashews... yum.

The meat never really looked that fresh or appetizing, and the sauces they provided were disgusting and most likely just came out of a bottle.  They were too sweet, and unlike the Mongo Grill on Denman Street where you can make your own sauce using garlic, cooking wine, sesame or chili oil, sweet and salty soy based sauces, there's no such options here.

Throw in the fact they weigh your plate and it ends up costing about triple what you'd pay at the other Mongo Grills, and you have yourself a regrettable dinning experience.  If I was Mongolian I would launch a class action defamation of character lawsuit.

I should have learned by now to check Yelp before just diving in to places. Because no one else should have to waste their time and money here, I'll make my review simple and to the point.

    1. It's expensive and confusing. Even the chef didn't seem to know how to price it.

    2. The sauces are a mess - not really components for your own creation, but not quite complete either.

    3. The cooking is completely dry which means vegetables end up crisped on the outside and raw on the inside. I prefer mongolian-style places that cover the food while cooking.

    4. The soup is just disgusting. Both kinds.

I never would have thought of this place as expensive/overpriced until I read some of the other reviews!

This is one place where it is really, really worth it to have a vegetarian meal.  When my boyfriend and I go (usually for a late lunch/ v. early dinner), we get much more food than we can comfortably eat for around $6 - $7 each.  There are a ton of veggie options, making it very easy to get a well-balanced meal, exactly however you like it.

I have no idea about the "authenticity" of this place - but it's clean, the vegetables are fresh (and are cooked just right, to my taste), the food is plentiful and the value (at least for vegetarian meals, and especially at lunch time) is excellent.

Edited to add for emphasis: Went last weekend for lunch at 2PM.  My lunch (vegetarian) was $4.40.  Seriously, under $6 with tip!!!! And I left STUFFED.

Love Mongolie Grill. It by far outweighs the one on Commercial and the one on Davie. Namely because when you want a stirfry you want a stirfry. You don't want soup in a bowl which is what you will get when you  eat at the other too. Far too liquidy and it is just not the same texture. I think the wraps rock too and the others don't provide you with wraps so it is not the same experience. As for the hoisin sauce they provide you with on the table, that is awesome too. As for the cost, I have always eaten there many times for 10 bucks or under for 1, 20 bucks for 2.
Always fresh, lots of sesame seeds, big pot of rice on the table, hot and sour soup. The others just don't do it as well.
    Love Mongolie Grill.

    Booo.

In a city where 99% of the Mongolian Grills choose both epic cheap prices and the benevolent bowl-size system of pricing, there's no room for the Mongolie Grill. These places a wildly popular in other cities where pricing by weight is the norm but here you're getting the same quality food, which isn't too shocking, but for greatly inflated prices.

The quality of ingredients and layout here are at least higher than average compared to the other places. It's clean and a bit sleeker but that's all you're getting for your extra money.

There are multitudes of these places further down broadway, up commercial and down davie. I'd head to any of those before I'd bother paying extra here.

I've come here a few times with big groups. It's great because you don't have to wrangle with menus, you just go to the salad bar-like section, pick out your meats, veggies, and sauces, and have it all cooked up by the guys on their huge grills. Yep, don't envy their job too much.

The only downsides are that it can get busy and then you're standing there in line forever, holding your little bowl of food. Also, the communal grill means that anyone with allergies, especially to seafood and peanuts, has to steer clear. They wipe the grill between orders, but chances of picking up allergens are pretty good.

I do like the system where guessing the weight of your order within a certain margin (10 grams?) nets you a free meal! I've never seen someone win it, but it's like a little lottery for din-din.

Rice and wraps are provided gratis. Service however, is surprisingly slow, given how much actual serving needs to be done.

Usually when I go out to eat, it's because I don't want to cook. This place drops the ball on that one. You have to get up, go to the buffet of raw food and assemble your ingredients. You have to choose your sauces too ... but which combination will be delicious and which will be nasty? That's your gamble.

As mentioned in previous reviews, the price is determined by weight. I prefer to know how much a dish will be in advance of taking it. Here if your eyes are bigger than your stomach, you pay for it! Unless you can guess the weight of your meal. But that's a shot in the dark.

It's kinda cool to go in and check it out, but I must say I prefer to be waited on, cooked for and cleaned up after when I go out. This restaurant goes 1 for 3 on those preferences.

They now have bison meat and smoked salmon. The guessing Game regarding the food is interesting, but very hard to win. Guess by price, not by weight!  The food is tasty depending on what you choose. The service is alright and it's pretty romantic here at night.  Especially if you get a window table looking out at broadway and cambie.

Ok.  Here's the thing: I love to eat, I can eat a lot and I can also stomach a lot of things that most people cannot.

Why I don't like this place:
    -raw meat looks stale
    -sauce is all used up
-floor was so greasy I almost fell
-meat and sauce used was not replenished
-food is not worth the money I paid for (I paid for $14 for food that I think it's worth $5) - mall food is better than this place
-food was over cooked, not much taste on the sauce (trust me I loaded it up with sauce)
    -rice was hard
-flies were hovering over the condiments and on our food

One of the worst meals I have ever experienced. Please save your money and go somewhere else.

While the raw meat selection is good, an abundance of fruit flies/insects, dingy old decor and furniture along with unfriendly "greasy diner type" wait staff await.  The hot and sour soup was greasy and the high price (you pay by the weight) was definitely not earned by this restaurant; will never come back.
