The food is excellent. We are not vegans but we really enjoyed the squash soup and the roti which was packed with flavor. The desserts are to die for. My daughter loves their oatmeal cookies. Will be back

The exchange district has some lovely little nooks and old buildings, and Mondragon is right at home in this area. A solid cafe option for vegan eats, it's also a little anarchist bookstore and grocery store combined.

The cafe's got a nice range of eats, including burgers, wraps, burritos, and their delicious dragon bowl. My significant other is a gluten-free vegan and they have a menu that's specific to those needs so you don't have to sift through the regular menu, which is a nice touch.

On our visit we split a dragon bowl (mmm), a tofu sandwich (MMM!) and also one of the GF vegan cinnamon rolls (not baked in-house, but still freakin' delish!). We were STUFFED by the meal's end, washed down with a nice kombucha and some water (help yourself, as it should be!).

I dig that Mondragon have politics and activism as the foundation of what they provide in their store and their cafe. It's got a quaint charm and it's a bit rough around the edges, but it's a terrific little place. 4.5 stars, possibly a 5 if i'd gotten to visit more during my time in Winnipeg!

Vegan cafe and anarchist bookstore in Winnipeg?  Yes please.

I ordered the herb crusted tofu sandwich on a fresh made roll with a side salad and a fresh kale, apple and ginger juice.  I loved it and felt great after I ate it.  There is a decent collection of independent books and I left mine at my hotel so I picked up a book on how to make my own biodiesel to read with my meal.  I got a local kombucha from their grocery section and 2 cookies (one gluten free and one regular to compare) to go.  I am only in town for one more day and rather than try something else Winnipeg has to offer, I would prefer to eat here again to see what other deliciousness they have.  Fair trade coffee and beet juice is on my agenda this time as well.

I love independent places like this. I love the unique food options, the lefty books and magazines, the unusual t-shirts...

Sure, this place might be a little harsh if you haven't had much exposure to feminist thoughts or vegan ideas, and the service wasn't...quite...friendly...but there's a lot of new ideas floating around and my intellect was sparked.

I did have to ask for a bag for the magazines I bought, which I felt condemned me to capitalistic pig status....but oh well.

One downside: The bathrooms didn't appear to have light switches, so, uh, get there during the day.

I'm vegan, I'm in Winnipeg for the first time, and I'm starving. This usually doesn't end well for me.

My friends and I were looking for food when we passed by this place and honestly thought nothing of it. It's a bookstore/coffee house that seems to attract the odd homeless/crazy person out front. But I happened to glance at a menu quickly and nearly lost it. A vegetarian restaurant in Winnipeg! And right in front of me! Too good.

First, to say the service is bad isn't quite accurate. Because there is barely any service. There's a large menu on the wall, you walk up and place your order. You seat yourself, get your own water, and grab the food when they ring the bell. For a second there I thought I was going to have cook it. Everyone was really cool though, and the food came pretty quick, so I have no complaints.

Second, the food was amazing. Between the 6 of us we tried a bunch of different things and no one was disappointed. I had southern fried tofu wrapped up and tucked into a veggie burger. It was so good, and inspired me to shake and bake my own tofu at home. I remember my friends burrito was also pretty awesome and everyone loved the Dragon Bowl.

Lastly, there's a bookstore there. Which ordinarily wouldn't be strange. However, it seemed at the time to have a large selection of Anarchy related material. Which if you're interested in that sorta thing, then this is the place for you. As for me, as long as they're cooking up decent grub, I'm going to try to not be concerned about it.

Made it back in to be very surprised on the update to the kitchen. A lot of nice new equipment that still turns out very good food. From talking to them they are not quite done the renovations yet but it still looks very good. In my case had the very good veg-burger and soup along with an OK cup of coffee. the whole thing cam out to just over $10, a good lunch in a neat little place. Will be back later to both enjoy the food, and see how the renovation go.

Well I've eaten at Mondragon three times in total now. I've had the "starving courier" which is organic beans, cooked with tomatoes and hand ground spices, organic brown rice served with organic corn chips, lettuce, tomato, salsa and sour cream $4.25. So I assumed this would taste like the burrito that I loved so much except there would be no tortilla shell wrapping. Well, it was sort of like it except it was super bland. Not sure if they forgot to add the spices but luckily this was not my first meal here as I would not return if I tasted something like that. It's a lot of protein and very filling. Not a fan of all those corn chips as it just sort of makes this healthy dish feel unhealthy. I'd rather have a soup or salad on the side.

Then I went back and tried the "Dragon bowl" which is their signature salad. It's a mix of local ingredients with Japanese flavours - kale, chard, shredded cabbage, carrots, cucumber, shredded beat, peas, nectarine, hemp seeds, all on a bed of organic seasoned rice served with a ginger miso dressing and two slices of sesame ginger marinated tofu ($9.25). How can you go wrong with that? Well....let's just say that this is a very very healthy tasting salad. I love veggies but apparently I don't love kale. I don't think I've had it before and I can see why - it's a really bitter tasting green. I'm sure it's jammed packed full of nutrients and such but it is not my thing. I tried to eat as much as I could but I ended up picking out the kale and throwing it away like a child (I don't normally do that). It just left such a bitter taste on my palate so I had to admit defeat if I were to finish this salad.

I loved the seasoned rice as it reminded me of sushi rice (different texture though). But unfortunately, they included all the hard crispy overcooked layer at the bottom of the pot in my salad. That added texture but I'm not sure if that was deliberate. I think they were scraping at the bottom of the rice pot. I love rice but I don't like the hard crispy layer.

It's a good salad for those who really those aforementioned veggies. I'm sure most vegans and vegetarians eat this stuff all the time and wonder why I am cringing about kale. But as a non-veg/vegan, I can't handle the intensity of this salad. LOL. I'll stick to the burrito at the Mondragon.

And I just discovered why the burrito was priced all weird in my first visit, it's because to-go containers (compostable) cost an extra $0.45. I don't mind but it'd be nice if they mentioned that; I only noticed this time when I happened to look at the monitor.

The food gets 5 stars. Everything is good, everything is vegan. The service is what is 'iffy'...it can be like waiting in 'emerg' at the hospital...you have to keep your eye on what's going on, advocate for yourself, ask questions if the wait starts to feel too long for what you ordered vs. the congestion...maybe you've been forgotten...politely remind them. Haha. Nothing's perfect. It's still the best vegan restaurant in WPG food wise...just pay attention to your order!

What to say about the 'Dragon? It's consistent, it's homey, it's delcious! Nowhere else in the city can you get quality organic, vegan food AND radical books in one place.

The Dragon Bowl salad with its brown rice, greens, beets, carrots, tofu and special dressing is one of my favourite dishes at any restaurant. The Mondragon chocolate cake is second-to-none, too -- vegan or not! Their specials and soups are always trés tasty.

Now, when it comes to service, Mondragon is a bit of a sticky wicket. Has the attempt to move away from counter service to table service been completely abandoned now? It's been years since I had my first visit to Mondragon, so I can't relate to newcomers who might find a first-time visit confusing and offputting.

the food is always good, but in the past the service was a little hit or miss. however, recently the service has been consistently good and my mom has become a huge fan of their chocolate cake and the grocery section.
