Wonderful breakfast. Best quiche of my life!  Lattes were brewed with care, smooth and flavourful.  Paris in Nanaimo?

Man i am getting around Nanaimo!
So last coffee trial location was Mon Petit Choux. After I got over the over sacchrine-y name I ventured in upon a solid recommendation from a colleague. Ordered an americano which took a long time but seemed ok. Upon first sip...yup. Just OK.

I did grab some ginger cookies which were pretty solid with some crumbled candied ginger bits on top. A nice accompaniment that made me forget about the subpar americano at least for a few minutes. Out of the 3 cafes i've tried I honestly have no preference. I would likely just go to whichever was closest and keep thinking about the awesome americano i had had 2 days priori at the Tofitian...

When I walked into Mon Petit Choux it reminded me of cafe's I have eaten at in France. The small marble top tables, the colours and of course the smells. My first thought was, will the quality be the same as the old country? To my surprise it is. The baked goods offered here are well worth paying for. I highly recommend the the almond croissants, the quiche, salad, muesli, bee stings, and the baguettes. I'm sure they have many more amazing offerings. I just haven't been here enough to try them all.

I grew up in Nanaimo and have seen the city change so much over the years. Especially regarding the evolution of the variety of restaurants being run. I am delighted to have found such a great little cafe in the city by the sea.

My first non-Yelp recommended selection in Canada happened to be a very good one. I just wish there were cool French bakeries like this in Denver!

I arrived around lunch and still found a couple of empty seats. The layout is a little funky being that it is spread across two levels and the tables seemed to be randomly placed in those areas. The service was also a bit odd, since I felt I had to flag someone down instead of just being waited on. I guess I'm picky.

Once I got past those minor qualms, I found the service and the food to be excellent! I had a slice of the quiche which had obviously homemade crust and excellent flavor. They also had a selection of salads and baked goods and it was only the scrap on self-control I have that preventing me from enjoying more.

I also had the benefit of talking to the owner, who obviously has a great passion for what she does. That passion comes out in the food. Next time I'm on the island, I'll be returning for some of those baked goods.

My daughter and I had breakfast here recently and took desserts to go.

For breakfast, I had a croque madame, which was very good.  My daughter had French toast which was more like sliced bread pudding - it was very moist.    We got buttery, flaky croissants, raspberry brioche and a great cinnamon roll (which seemed to be made with flaky pastry dough rather than a bready type dough).  Also got a pecan bar, which was outstanding.

Don't expect attentive service here once the place gets crowded.  You will get your food quickly, but beyond that....

Great location, great coffee, great service, good pastries and bread though croissants are often slightly over-cooked and yet, thankfully, still delicious. I can't express how much I appreciate having a good French café-pâtisserie-boulangerie in town.

Since my last review I've enjoyed going here several times. Something that should be mentioned is the espresso. They serve Drumroaster coffee and take great care in doing so. This means they are one of the very few places who serve and know about great coffee.

On my last visit I enjoyed the vegetarian sandwich with roasted portobello mushrooms and their sinful hot chocolate.

I'd love to up their rating to 5 stars, but service can be slow and I did get stuck in their washroom stall with no tp....

I have eaten here several times a week for the past couple of years so I'm well overdue for drafting a review.  This place is absolutely wonderful, and I eat here regularly for a reason.  Given the proliferation of restaurants in Nanaimo that serve boring processed and/or generic food, Mon Petit Choux is a jewel.  The owner Linda has a great deal of passion for her business and for the neighbourhood, and it shows through in the quality of the space, the food and the service.  Everything is made with high-quality ingredients, be they local organic or free-range, the preparation and presentation are exquisite, and the staff are friendly and responsive.  You should also check out their fine-dining sister restaurant The Wesley Street Cafe.

Hearty service and flawless breakfast dishes  I had the Croque Madame, my friend had salmon on scrambled eggs. On another visit, he had a french toast, while I had a roast beef sandwich. Never disappointed.

Excellent little cafe - the pastries and desserts are just wonderful, and I've never had a lunch item I didn't like there. Yes, the space is a little oddly laid out and service can be a little bit slow when it's busy, but considering how great it is to have a French-style cafe in downtown Nanaimo, and how consistent the food is, these are minor quibbles. In fact, I'm going back there in a few days and very much looking forward to it.
