I love love love Momento! Everyone here is passionate about coffee and loves what they do. They put care into every cup they make, and it shows. The atmosphere is chill and laid back, and there are plenty of yummy treats and sandwiches to accompany your coffee or tea.
Rick, the owner, is awesome. Totally knowledgeable about all aspects of coffee. He's combined his love of all things coffee with a wonderful environment and terrific staff. Whether you're a coffee aficionado or just starting to learn about coffee, Momento's got the perfect cup of coffee waiting for you. -

One of my coworkers had been raving about this place for months so today I finally made my way over to this wonderful coffee house and I couldn't be happier that I did.
The place has an inviting, laid-back vibe and a clean, warm interior.
The staff is super friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about coffee and gave me a killer suggestion for what to try out as it was my first time going there.
I feel that whether you're a coffee aficionado or simply want a great tasting cup of coffee, this place is for you. Definitely check it out.
P.S., they have an unreal date/pumpkin/pecan bar that is almost as tasty as the coffee. Almost. -

I've really enjoyed writing here on weekdays. The place is pretty quiet and their soy latte is great! The staff is always welcoming and will sometimes even let you select the music.
I highly recommend going to momento! -

2.5 Stars.
I came here for one reason. It is one of the few places in town that serves siphon coffee. So, I HAD to try it, even at $5 a pop. There are two other places that I know of, but I have not tried them yet.
When I rate coffee, I rate it based on how it tastes black. Anything else added to it, covers up the true taste.
So why 2.5 stars? The service was good and the owner was more than accommodating. The coffee was nothing to write home about. Slightly sour, not too much body, but light years better than Starbucks, which I have a tough time trying to stomach black. -

This little coffee shop hidden in Kits is unassuming and delicious. I've been here a couple times and each time there was no seating because it was so busy. Their macchiato was really good, so good that I had 2. There are few places that make a proper one in the size it's supposed to be at. The other place I like it Revolver. It also helps that Momento is across the street from one of my favorite restaurants, Oakwood Bistro.

You know who loves coffee? Me, yeah d-uh. But the owner of this shop is fanatically obsessed. And I do my best to soak up as much info when I'm there. I ask a lot of stupid questions and get smart answers in return.
They make a mean pourover. If you want to learn how to make a great cup of coffee at home watch their technique.
I finally got around to trying a syphon. I generally get coffee to go but the owner politely suggested that I come back when I had time sit and appreciate it in a proper cup instead of pouring it in a paper cup. So that's what I did a couple weeks ago. As he brewed the coffee a crowd gathered to watch. I am inherently skeptical. Was this all smoke and mirrors or would it actually make a difference? Well the results are in:
Inconclusive. I tried the Costa Rica beans at their recommendation. The coffee was very flavourful once I let it sit for a minute or two. And it got more flavourful with each passing sip. But a good pourover will do the same. There weren't so much 'hints' of peanut but a real distinctive peanut flavour. Luckily I had tried a pourover of the same bean at another shop the day before. I have to say there were flavours in that bean I didn't notice the first time. But so much of what we appreciate is about experience. It is far too easy to convince yourself something is better just because you want it to be so.
I will have to try a side-by-side blind comparison. I'm not going to commit to purchasing a syphon until I'm sure the difference is in the process and not in my head. So far the results are encouraging. I'll write an update and in the meantime continue ordering both pourovers and syphons from Momento.Listed in: Coffee. The Good, The Brewed &…

Momento is my go-to coffee shop in Kits. These guys are passionate about coffee and do great cappuccinos and lattes. But the true measure is their espressos - no lingering bitterness begging for a sugar cover-up.
Atmosphere is laid-back and relaxed (not frenetic like 49th Parallel), but not really a place you want to linger around. More like the bars in Italy where you pound your coffee (while savouring the flavour!), then hop on the bus and get on your way. -

I'm a total convert. I love this place. Best coffee I've had, period. Rick the owner, owns the Mac Market next door and is insanely knowledgeable about coffee as well as apple computers, (don't get him started unless you have a lot of time to hear about the coffee process or processors). He's also very friendly as is all the staff.
The pastries are not the usual fair which is refreshing and my gluten-free wife has quite a few choices too. Personally I'm addicted to the chocolate chip brioche. -

Delicious coffee and friendly staff! Sometimes I swing by here to pick up a latte on my way to getting my hair did. The espresso is really smooth and this coffee shop is a like a little lab with these distillation-type apparatuses! It's enough to get any food chemist excited!! However... I still have yet to see one of those babies in action.

Pretty good for having just opened this Monday! The space is warm and inviting with tables inside and out, the staff is friendly, the baked goods look good (didn't taste today), the sandwiches were huge ($8, or 1/2 for $4.50).
My first choice was a Hario--individually dripped coffee using a siphon--which I have never experienced before. Unfortunately, this wasn't ready to drip today--but I'm so intrigued by it that I'll be back for certain!
My second choice was a latte--delicious! There was no hint of bitterness and the temperature was smack on!
I'm excited to see what other art adorns their walls. I felt somehow more cultured sitting here than at most other coffee shops around town.
They say that they'll be ready to accept debit/credit soon as well as offering free wireless. But hey, like I said, pretty good for having just opened less than a week ago! -

Been here a few times; and as those who take the 22 at West Fourth and MacDonald will agree-- it's mighty convenient.
Big ups: delicious espresso. The Chicago based Intelligentsia roasters have a tasty espresso roast, and the owner ensures that a quality shot is pulled every time. (He did seven shots for my americano to make sure it was tip top). He also knows a lot about coffee if you're interested.
Downer: despite the convenience, they're not super speedy. Unless you're doing drip, budget an extra five minutes or so to grab your brew. Also, I'm hesitant at the vibes inside, I don't know that I would want to hang out with a bit of an odd layout.
The Hario is a neat experience to watch, but the Clover at 49th Parallel up the road is more flavourful, cheaper, and a bit quicker. -

These guys are serious about coffee and the craftsmanship involved in preparing it. This is the basis of a good shop.
A few things:
-Twice I've had a sour shot pulled for me here. This comes with the territory when things are done manually, and is just an indication of inattentiveness or inexperience. I've gotten a sour shot from 49th too... it happens - but if you're running out the door and don't have time to have it remade, it's basically garbage.
-The espresso blend is not quite for me. It's good, no doubt, but I prefer black cat (Wicked Cafe)
-Punchcard! awesome. -
Review from Tina H.
My first impression was that it has a nice atmosphere. Lots of art on the walls, the tables are real wood... The machinery/setup is all fancy, especially those fancy Haro machines (the contraption that looks like it belongs in a science lab). Looks nice. I was a bit disappointed when I came in at the lack of seating but luckily someone was just leaving. Apparently they're getting more tables and chairs within the next few weeks so there will be more options. I only went there because they had free Wifi as I had work to do and I was tired of the usual joints I go to.
The guy at the counter was very knowledgeable about coffee, tea and brewing styles. I don't think I've met anyone else who's told me more about coffee than him! I was very impressed with his knowledge. Usually coffee shops don't tell you all that stuff but I was interested so it was cool to hear it. The atmosphere was friendly and not pretentious. I've gotten way more pretentiousness in a run down looking coffee shop, so it was a pleasant surprise to be in a nice one and not get any pretentiousness. The latte I got was really good and I'd definitely come back for another!
The baked goods aren't very intriguing. They get some stuff from that large bakery that supplies to a lot of the coffee shops. I didn't try the muffins though, but they were baked with parchment paper it looks like. I like that style, it looks nice. I think it came from a different bakery. I got something and there was a problem with it so I had to return. The guy's response was excellent customer service, he didn't charge me for it and gave me a cup of coffee on the house because of the problem. So, since I had lots of work to do still I decided to try the fancy Haro brewing method, which apparently assures that the water stays at a constant temperature throughout the brewing process, which affects which flavours are released. Regularly around $4 for a coffee, I never would've tried it otherwise. The process was pretty cool to watch, it's served in fancy glass with the siphon "machine" at your table, so it seems like a huge process! I can see why the hefty price tag. The flavour was definitely different than I've tasted before from drip and French press coffees, but very subtle though. A coffee connoisseur would appreciate the effort and notice the subtleties probably more than I did but I did notice some and I did like it! Different beans taste better with different brewing styles... interesting!
Overall, a good experience. Good internet connection, nice atmosphere, great coffee, great customer service. The only thing keeping me from giving it a full 5 stars is the food. What I tried didn't really do it for me, and there were no appealing savoury options. Often when I go to do work I spend a lot of time there and would like some good tasting "real food" options, not just sweets.
I don't know if it would've been the same good experience if someone else was working, but he made it an overall enjoyable stay (it could've gone worse given the circumstances). I had a good time there and I would definitely go back! I'll just hope they get better food options, or I'll make sure to eat first. -

I've only ever had iced espresso here (three times, strangely enough), so I can't speak for the hot and steamy variety, but from what I've sampled so far, I'm looking forward to coming back during colder climes. The staff is friendly, the giant brownies are a steal, and, provided you live out in the western reaches of Kits / Point Grey (or you ride the #22), it's a nice, if cozy, location.

Run, don't walk, to this drool-worthy coffee haus! I recently moved to the hood and as it is on my way to work, I thought I would check it out. Normally I go to Caffe Artigiano, or Blenz, or if desperate Starbucks, but lately despite the quality of their product Artigiano has become too corporatized and yuppie for me. So I am glad to have found this funky, yet excellent, high quality joint in the heart of Kits, very conveniently located at 4th and McDonald. They have a great setup, just like in Italy, with a stone high counter. The two staff I have met are amazingly friendly and personable and funny, too. The first thing that struck me about the place was that they had Hario siphon type coffee machines that employ bunsen burners. How can you go wrong with Bunsen Burners? I plan to go when I have more time on the weekend with my girl to enjoy this as I was told it takes 8-10 minutes to brew. I have also tried their Kitsilano cookie (very tasty with pumpkin, caraway seeds and other round little seeds I don't even know the name of!) and a nice, fresh healthy seemingly homemade muffin. So good and moist no butter was required!! Apparently with free wifi, what more can you ask for? Sold.
