The Big, the Elusive, the Daunting, 5-0-0
On a recent sunny morning I sat pondering what my 500th review would be about: an awesome meal, a shopping experience, a funny tale of a doctor, a cute childhood memory... and then I realized, I was sitting in the garden of what would grow into a milestone review for me.
Mole Hill epitomizes what I truly love about my neighbourhood: Refinished houses with the heritage mark (built around the turn of the 20th century), lower income housing that is beautiful (at least from the outside, I've never been inside one of these uints) and a community garden, all only two blocks away from Davie.
But it's not just who Mole Hill was rebuilt for... it's how it comes to life. Stroll through the traffic calmed alley, blocked to traffic on the Thurlow side (with the addition of some co-op car stalls) and you'll feel like you've left downtown... All you see is garden after garden, vegetable patch, after vegetable patch... even an opium poppy or two basking under the sun. Neighbours smile, people talk over their fences, sprinklers spin, children run, music plays.
Yes, that suburban neighbourhood that you just imagined is real... and it's right in the heart of the West End. Who knows, you might just catch me reading on a bench sometime this summer. I'm such a proud Vancouverite!
