I couldn't speak more highly of Moksha Yoga Halifax.

As someone who is admittedly not the most athletically inclined, I purchased the one month intro pass back in November during a lull in my exercise calendar. I only intended to practice for the duration of my pass and then join a gym after my time had run out. But they're right - give it a month and you'll be hooked.

There are different classes for different experience levels, and don't be daunted by the heat. It can definitely get warm in classes but the instructors always let you know that you're more than welcome to take water and breaks as needed.

As other yelpers have mentioned the studio can get super busy, but I always pre-register online (you can do it up to a week in advance) and I never have any trouble getting a spot in class.

One more tip - try yogassage. It's a relaxing 75 minute class where adjustments are performed by the studio's RMT, letting you passively sink into postures. Getting massaged while lying in a warm room listening to good music? Solid gold.

I have been going to this studio since they opened in 2008. If you asked me what I thought in the first 2.5 years. I would have given it five stars. But over the last while things got sour. I will explain. 1 year interstudio pass for $1550 is said by the studio to be good for all over the world. Well for some reason the one sold to me at the Dartmouth Moksha was not accepted by Halifax Moksha? I was going to both studios Halifax more often however Dartmouth sold the interstudio pass to me at a good discount so I got it in Dartmouth. After the studio owner in Halifax decided not to accept it. I went back to Dartmouth and got a full refund. I ended up buying another full year at Moksha Halifax. I needed my hot yoga so hands were tied because there was no other hot yoga in our province at the time beside Moksha. I also caved in and got a class pass to Dartmouth Moksha several of which might I add.

Another incident that threw me a loop was one instructor at Moksha Halifax told me I had enough for one day? Kind of mothered me a bit which I have to say was a little amusing but the whole thing turned nasty quick when she tried to tell me to go home in front of a group of people signing in and another Moksha teacher who is part owner and was visiting? The visiting teacher/owner seemed shocked about what was going down and all she said was "that's nuts" about my yoga pratice when the other teacher said it was like my 6 or 7 time here today and I should go home. I was humiliated and embarrassed. The problem for her was me wanting to keep coming back that day. I got so used to the series and the heat in that room after years of doing it. I had the day off work and thought why not spend it doing yoga. I took 7 classes that day.

Other then the above two problems I had at Moksha Halifax the studio is nice teachers are good and some are great because you can really tell they love the job and it shows with adjustments they do in class and the smile they carry when speaking to people around the studio. Moksha Halifax runs 10 classes a day most of the year so nobody can ever complain about the schedule at this place. The place is always packed I mean jam packed. So arrive early to class. Yeah just follow the crowd try not to do anything too off the wall like attempt to challenge yourself by going more than once a day. If you are looking for a challenge then may I suggest Bikram yoga. After a Bikram class the thought of coming back same day should not cross your mind as you will get more than enough after just one class. Will you get used to Bikram like Moksha? Not really Bikram will kill you over each time you go or I am just getting old?

Moksha Yoga Halifax is where I learned to love yoga, I started out in the 90 min class many years ago when it was the only studio downtown and I still think it's one of the best! Take a shorter or beginner class your first time to hot yoga because it's hard but the teachers will help you through.

I think it's a very balanced practice where everything from your toes to your mind is exercised and they have some beautiful teachers. The studio is very large and well maintained; I've never been grossed out while laying face down with up to 50 other sweaty students :)

I'm a bit surprised by all the 5 star reviews.  The location is convenient and the class was full, good teacher, but the space wasn't inviting - more on the sterile/gym side of things than the yoga studios I am used to.  This was also my first time doing the Moksha sequence so I found it a bit easy but hey, to each their own and it certainly doesn't factor into the 3 star review.  However, what does, is the fact that when I asked one of the many girls at the desk, as I stood there, waiting for them to break conversation, and asked, will my bag be okay if left in the cubby without a lock? Do you guys lock the doors during class? One the instructors said "we do not lock the doors but so and so will be at the register however there was an incident as early as last week so ... if you want to put your wallet up here we can do that?"  That's all fine and I did take them up on the offer to keep my stuff at the register, but who steals from a yoga studio and more importantly how did the girl at the register miss it or not suspect something ? Next time I go - i'll make sure to bring a lock but if you forget one - just be mindful of the risk.

Love this place - especially the upstairs room that holds smaller classes and is more intimate. Would recommend for anyone to give it a try!

At first I was afraid of the heat. Then, I was nervous because I wasn't sure if I could keep up. But, I took the plunge a couple months ago and bought a one-month pass, and I'm totally hooked!

Yes, the studio is super busy, especially when there is a 30-day challenge going on, but the online scheduling system makes it easy to book a class and if you're punctual, there are no issues. I actually love booking on online because it keeps me accountable and I don't wimp out.

I also love that despite the number of faces that are coming and going, the instructors make an awesome effort to get to know everyone's names and recognize faces.

As for the class experience, the downstairs studio and upstairs studios are so different in size, that they make for really different experiences. I like the small studio for late evening classes, but prefer the downstairs studio overall. The early AM classes are the least humid; it's very humid by the end of the day!

There are a variety of different styles of instructors, and I like that there are different twists that each instructor adds to their classes. I'd recommend Moksha to anyone looking to try a new form of yoga or who's curious about a new way to sweat it out while also creating calm in their mind.

Time for another update - MYH has made some major changes. The upstairs studio is now up and running, though it was closed for the summer. It's smaller and gets pretty humid, but the extra classes everything more flexible. Sadly, they shut the upstairs down for the summer, but it's back up and running now.

Also new, a massage therapist, Kelly Donald, is now working at MYH. In addition to her own practice, she does "Yogassage" - imagine 75 minutes of Yin yoga, with an RMT helping do adjustments. It's incredible - and only $20 per session.

Lastly, they've started offering a membership type system, if you commit to four months' menbership, and preauthorized payment, the cost of unlimited passes has dropped substantially. This is a great change.

I've been hitting up the hot yoga since December and I have to say I do love me some Moksha.
It's a super busy studio, which can be kind of trying on the patience sometimes, but busy= good.
One thing I wish they did though was post which instructor was teaching which class. While the majority of the instructors here are amazing, everybody has a different personality and some people jive better than others.
Overall though, a great place to sweat it out!

Moksha will make you sweat- Sweat 'till you can't sweat no more!

I have played sports my whole life, worked out with personal trainers and nothing has ever gotten me to sweat more- and I love it!

At first when you enter the silent room you are comfortable and relaxed but after a few flows you begin to sweat from every orifice. Beginners are welcome and encouraged and the excellent teachers will challenge even the most seasoned yogi.

After an hour of this Yoga you feel refreshed, and cleansed and in need of a shower!

Try a karma class only $5 or a beginners pass- only 40$ for a month unlimited  ( for newcomers only) and youll be wishing you were stuck in a sauna with 30 other strangers for months to come!

I went here as a total beginner to yoga, and I was not disappointed. The instructor's I've had so far (3 different ones) have all been friendly, helpful, and what can only be described as peaceful.  I started out with the student special, using the coupon in our official day planners for a week of free yoga. Then I got the 10 class pass for $120, although they have lots of different packages.

The 'hot' part was not uncomfortable, more like a soothing feeling than anything. I feel like it added to the workout, although since I've never done yoga anywhere else, I can't say how different it is. What I can say is that I love this yoga class. They have both 90 minute classes and 60 minute classes (condensed, somewhat easier than 90), plus a level 2 class for the more advanced students. So far I've done 60 minute classes, and it's been a great workout.

I don't do much yoga, so I guess it doesn't mean much when i say... It was definitely the best yoga experience i ever had and thanks to them, I will never go back to regular yoga. Moksha is calming, liberating and makes you sweat like K.D. Lang at a Christian singles dance.

The most authentic and enriching yoga experience in Halifax- bar none.

The list of classes offered at this studio is more comprehensive and more extensive than that over others in the area;  they embody both an enhancement of spiritual (ie stress-free) well-being, and they place great emphasis on physical well-being through intensive detoxifacation regimens  (seriously, I cannot recall the last time I worked up such a sweat prior to joining Moksha-  my body feels refreshingly detoxed for  days after classes).

I'm always very impressed with the caliber of skilled instruction at this studio- the yogis at Moksha are well-versed in their practices,  unlike some of the less affluent faux-yogis I've had in the past who attempt to instill incorrect yoga methods upon learning yoginis. Bottom line, when you sign up for classes at Moksha, you're guaranteed to learn the best techniques to ensure the optimal relaxing and rejuvenating yoga experience.

Another enticing aspect of Moksha is that it caters to virtually all abilities, from yoga enthusiasts like myself who wish to enhance and uphold their yoga experiences, to those just learning the art.  I've participated in classes which are open to everyone, irregardless of their level of proficiency, and it's been fun bringing along friends who are just beginning to experience the yoga lifestyle- it's a fun and relaxing collaborative experience.

Just to let everyone know: Moksha is involved with the Power of Movement Yoga Challenge, which is a yoga challenge to beat arthritis and autoimmune conditions.

You can opt to fundraise and join the Moksha team at: http://www.powerofmove...

    OR

You can simply commit to doing 30 consecutive days of hot yoga starting (technically) today February 6th and running through to March 7th. Opting to fundraise and commit to a month of yoga is ideal!

This is a great cause and also a perfect way to get in out of the cold and do something amazing for your body! I felt great after my first class today.

I'm a huge advocate for this spot, and with recent conformation of upcoming expansion and renovations, its all the more reason for the yo-curious to give it a whirl.

Soled Out Sneakers will be moving up the street, and Moshka will be expanding upwards. With plans for another studio, more space in changing rooms (hooray), comes new classes, workshops and further goodness for any yogi or yogi inspired.

This is by far the most comfortable downtown yoga vibe I've encountered, and the new ground only makes it better. The studio will be a little bit out of its normal mum for the next few weeks, but classes will resume as usual.

This is something to get excited about... I wonder if they'll bring teacher training to Halifax as well. Wouldn't that be nice.

I'm not really a yoga fan for some reason.  I think I get too antsy when I do it and just want to bounce and flop around.  Moksha is different because it is hot.  The room is so warm that you sweat like crazy, actually detoxifying your entire body.  This aspect of the yoga makes it more challenging and easier for me to concentrate.

I like the schedules they have because it's usually available to anyone's schedule.  I you have free time during the week I recommend going then; the weekends are just too busy.  I went on a Saturday once and the entire room was full.  It was so full that I couldn't even stretch out all the way without hitting someone.  The dude behind me touched my foot because we were so packed.

The instructors here are great.  They are very informative and helpful.  If you're doing something wrong they will correct you.  One instructor in particular, Melissa, is cool because, in the more awkward poses, she asks if it's alright that she moves you.  I liked the respect that she's showing when she does this.

Just a quick tid bit.  Ladies, don't be afraid to change in front of each other... and stop taking up the toilets to change your clothes!  Some of us really need to pee after drinking 1.5 litres of water in an hour.

If you're just looking to increase your exercise a bit, maybe try going once or twice a week.  That means that buying a whole month isn't really worth it.  Unless you plan on going more than three times every week, the monthly pass isn't worth it.  I stick to one to two times a week, since it's quite a work-out and my muscles usually hurt the next day.

Moksha Yoga Halifax is my favorite yoga spot in the HRM. I love the cozy atmosphere and neighborhood as it's right on the corner of Spring Garden Road. Highly recommended to my Haligonian Yogis/Yoginis.
