Review from Chantal I.
Vancouver, BC
I've worked for two coffee roasters, and have visited (ok stalked) nearly every visible roaster on the West Coast, from Vancouver to Victoria, to San Diego. Maybe I'll even soon get to reviewing them all with the glowing reviews they too deserve.
Like Moja. My Moja boys as I so lovingly refer to them with my friends, are a beacon in the smog. I don't "need" a morning coffee, I love it. And it doesn't have to be the morning. I appreciate the journey of it, and I support the farmers, the roasters, and the baristas that tell it's true story.
Before I started working for coffee roasters I didn't even drink coffee, and now I'm learning to appreciate it more and more each day. Single origin french press, espresso, and my cafe fav, a traditional cappuccino. And by traditional I mean don't ask me if I want it in a 20oz paper cup. No self respecting Barista would ever ask this.
I've been to origin (Guatemalan Coffee farm), I've eaten the cherry around the bean you probably didn't even know was there, but I've still not learned the art, the science, and the mastery of pulling that rich, thick, beautiful shot of espresso. Enter, Moja.
I spent most of the summer of 2010 sitting in the sunlight that streams in through the windows, with my macbook pro, my iTunes library, and a french press pot, working, dreaming, scheming, and plotting my first real attempt at entrepreneurship. Why is this relevant to a review? Because they let me. I supported myself on the Thomas Haas pastries they serve, the fabulous creative sweets that Ben is experimenting with, and coffee. I bounced ideas off "my" boys, I asked them about their own.
After travelling and generally being a gypsy for about a year, Moja became my office, and the Baristas became my friends.
The owners are friendly, involved, and generally seem respected and trusted by their staff. It's a family business, and it shows. How could you not want to support them?
They bring in excellent coffees, mostly fair trade and organic, from some of the best coffee producing regions in the world. Their service, pastry offerings, and atmosphere are equally as awesome, and their south facing patio is excellent for people watching and general life enjoyment.
Think I'm a coffee snob hipster? I'm not. I just love a good story, good business, and I know how many people and how much work go into a cup of coffee.
What do you geek out on? Come on over. You'll be happy you did, and Moja will be happy to ease you into it. One carefully explained home brewing method and bean selection at a time.Listed in: Craft Coffee.

really love this place, great baristas. Sadly my last visit left me with a watery Americano so hence the 4 stars. Maybe just a bad day

Class act and excellent coffee!
I'm a serious coffee snob, design and roast my own espresso blend, and use a professional espresso machine at home every day. Having coffee out is generally a bitter disappointment. My first trip to Moja was stellar from start to finish. Great environment, knowledgeable and professional staff who know how to pull a good shot AND texture milk properly. Great espresso blend resulted in a flavorful latte with an excellent start and finish. Can't wait to go back! -

Good espresso and a helping hand figuring out a good grind for my camping espresso maker. Organic and fair trade. What more could anyone want?

*Note: Try Moja coffee in the new Vancouver Convention Center!

Moja respects the bean with a sophisticated and sustainable coffee attitude and organic, fair trade coffees from around the globe. With a roaster on the premises and well educated baristas to answer any questions you may have about the beans or the roasting and brewing techniques, Moja is really outstanding.
You can also find their coffee at other cafes and boutique hotels. The seriously delectable pastries are from locally owned Thomas Haas and they carry the beautiful Chocolates of the same name. (No exaggeration, these are fine looking products!)
The cafe itself is also quite attractive and comfortable, with lots seating and light and an outer patio in the sun, on a quiet street.
The machine is Italian. It's a gorgeous hand made Victoria Arduino Athena Machine. (see pic't)
The place is sleek.
The vibe is good, the customers flow. The coffee is sublime. -

I have to say, this is THE best coffee on the North Shore. I discovered their coffee at Thomas Haas when I first bought my espresso machine, and now they have their own little café. I tried many Vancouver roasters, from Artegiano, to JJBean. There are many good roasters in Vancouver, But Moja by far has the nicest espresso. It is tasty but not bitter, great crema if you grind it properly. Some espresso roasts really irritate my stomach, not Moja. It's great... Their coffee is fresh and delicious, and they sell Thomas Haas croissants.
If you are an espresso lover this is the place to go for a good cup.
Love this place. -

Best coffee in Vancouver - from a tiny place that really cares about their beans. Reasonable prices for retail quantities of fresh roasted beans too. The address above is incorrect though - the correct address is 1412 Rupert St, corner of Rupert and Harbor, across the street from Canadian Tire, one block off Main St.
