I have been trying out other salons in the area for quite some time now and have not found one that really clicked with me... until now. I had my hair cut and colored by Megan about a month ago. It was one of the best salon experiences I've ever had.
After the initial shock of seeing myself brunette for the first time in my life, I am absolutely in love with my ombre look. Not only was Megan (and everyone at Modem) as sweet and welcoming as can be, but she took the time to get my hair done right. It's not easy going from blonde to brown in one sitting, but she did it, and it looks amazing (not to toot my own horn or anything).
There is a reason why everyone has given them 5 stars, and why I felt compelled to write my first Yelp review ever. I will most DEFINITELY be returning. -

Words cannot express how much I adore this place. I never pamper myself, so I decided a couple weeks ago to book my first facial. My skin looked (and looks) great afterward, but the best part was the utter relaxation that came with the experience. Rebecca was so sweet and pleasant and made me her absolute priority during our time. I'm a very tense person, and so I'm used to this persistent ache in my upper back/shoulders. I didn't mention this fact to her, but after the massage she gave me, I felt extraordinary. It's been a week and I keep habitually starting to complain about my upper back tension... and then I realize it's not there! Instead of pushing the products she had used after like some people do, she asked me if I wanted to see what she would recommend. Of course I did, and ended up buying face wash that's been working pretty well
Well, I was on a roll, so, when I noticed some split ends two days ago, I booked a haircut with Lindsey. Some (necessary) background- I have super long, curly hair that I love. I've been too scared to let anyone touch for a long time, since, in my experience, hairdressers love to cut so much off. I usually just trim it myself, with success, but I'd read so many good things about Lindsey and had such a good experience last week that I fought my fear and booked an appointment for yesterday. So this was a huge deal for me, and I was incredibly nervous. She was very warm, immediately complimented my hair, and asked me what I wanted to do. I asked for 2 inches off and if she could refine some of the little front layers I had made. She did EXACTLY what I asked, and even showed me how much hair she was going to cut when I told her I was scared. Then she blew it dry, and somehow it ended up much straighter (but with a lot of body) than normal... which I loved. I mentioned this and she said "Oh, let me refine the look for you then"... and she did! I was smiling uncontrollably as she finished my hair up because it looked AMAZING. It's almost 24 hours later and it looks beautiful. I don't even want to wash it. I can't believe I was so terrified by the prospect of cutting my hair two days ago because now I can't WAIT to go back. Lindsey is my new girl. -

If you happen to be one of those folks that is walking around LA, not super stoked about your hair or your stylist, it's time you go see Lindsey at Modem Salon. She is guaranteed to make your jacked up 'do' look super fresh and super new.

Love this salon and love the stylist Megan McGill. Megan is young, hip, and on-trend. She's a creative stylist who thinks out of the box, but can also give you a more traditional cut as well! She just did ombre color on my dyed black hair and she was still able to lift the color to a light enough to where you could see the difference. It came out so well!
I highly recommend her! -

Lindsey's the best.
Just moved to LA, a friend recommended her, and I cringed at the price then went for it anyway. Best $80 I've EVER spent.
She super sweet, easy to talk to, and really took the time to figure out my hair texture (fyi I walked in with my hair having air dried, which helps). I asked her for Zooey Deschanel hair/bangs and she did an absolutely perfect job. And she really took the time to show me how to style my own hair, whether I wanna wear it curly or straight.
And Modem's great, not snooty like WeHo or Bev Hills, not annoyingly edgy or hipster-y like a lot of Silver Lake hair studios. Completely unpretentious, welcoming, lots of space and natural light. Easy street parking.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. -

I've watched enough episodes of Tabatha Takes Over to know a good salon when I see one. Ok, I've only watched a couple of episodes, but I know a great salon when I experience one. Wonderfully situated a few doors down from L.A. Mill and a few other cute Silverlake shops, Modem perfectly fits in this adorable neighborhood.
Modem is bright, airy, and welcoming with tasteful decor. I was warmly greeted the moment I walked in an offered a beverage. But the focus of my visit was not my hair - I walked in with a messy ponytail and walked out with an even messier ponytail. My mission was a much needed massage with Arianna. The massage area, simply put, is heavenly. It's removed in a separate facility from the salon proper. You walk out back past a garden patio area and head upstairs to another spot. It's lovely and serene. There's an area for relaxing and separate areas for massages and facials. Arianna has a magical touch. I walked in with a tweaked neck, shoulder, creaky arm, and creaky back (yip, I'd waited too long between massages) and left feeling ready to climb any mountain...and I did. I went hiking that weekend. Something I would've have dared pre-massage.
Come to Modem. Ask for Arianna. She's the best. -

Rebecca and the ISUN facial are the best. One of the most relaxing experiences I've ever had and my skin absolutely glowed. I went out to dinner right after no make up applied at all. Can not wait to go back. Highly recommend!!!

I love Modem, and I love Megan. She really knows how to cut short hair, which is a true talent.
She gave me the EXACT haircut I wanted...and a great head massage :)
Plus I got a last minute appointment on a Saturday which is great for busy bees working during the week. -

I was reminded yesterday, when they squeezed me in for a cut and color, why I started going to Modem Salon 8 years ago. Yes.... it's true I am a converted follower of this great local small business and there are many reasons why.
Being a gal who does't treat myself to nails, facials, massages very often my appointments at Modem are my time to be pampered and relax. The staff is always welcoming and friendly, they have great product lines including Kevin Murphy (natural based) and Davines (environmentally conscience) both of which I am fans of and a new facial line which is all natural (I have scheduled an intro session with their new esthetician Rebecca, will review in the near future as well).
From working with battered women's shelters to recycling cut hair for oil spill cleanup, I know personally that they try to keep their business both thoughtful and a positive place within the neighborhood (which they've been a part of for about 20 years now).
All this being said I will continue to go back and be pampered whenever I need a little TLC. -

I recently went to Modem Salon and Spa in Silverlake to get a facial by Esthetician Anna Logan. I have to say that this is one of the BEST facials that I've ever received in my life.
Anna tailored the facial for my skin, gave me a small massage and didn't leave me in pain or scar me after extractions...I was out in just over an hour and without hesitation would make an appointment again!
Her prices are reasonable as well so make your appointment today! ;) -

I just turned 33 and had never had a facial. I got a gift from my hubby and he treated me to one at Modem. I have ridiculously sensitive skin, and have always feared someone making it worse.
Rebecca assured me that all her products were iSun, all organic and wild full of phytonutrients and and that my skin would be safe.
My skin loved it! My pores shrunk, my dark spots from pregnancy were gone and I was glowing. The best part was, I started getting carded again. I went ahead and took her recommendations and bought the eye cream too. I usually stick to my old trustee product lines but I didn't regret. I use a tiny drop on each eye and it glides all around.
Thank you Rebecca, for bringing my beauty and youth to the surface for others to see. -
Review from Leslie C.
This was my first visit to Modem and my first ever facial. I called to make an appointment and got one for Saturday at 1pm -- although their hours go as late as 7pm or 8pm, seems like a facial appointment is only available in the day. The salon looks a bit disorganized but it is clean with a very welcoming atmosphere. My aesthetician was Rebecca who put me at ease with my questions regarding the after effects for facials. I got the standard facial for $75 and it lasted about 1 hour. The facial includes a massage of my shoulders and arms too. I left feeling very relaxed and my face felt hydrated and fresh. Since I was self-conscious about my bare skin, Rebecca applied some of their organic makeup on me with no charge. I'm definitely coming back for another facial with Rebecca.

I've been going to Modem since I moved to LA three years ago. I saw Leila for cut, color, and highlights until she left and then started going to Lindsey once Modem was lucky enough to have her. I look forward to walking in and seeing her smiling face every six weeks! Lindsey is not only a talented and skilled stylist, she's genuinely nice and really listens to what you want.
I love this salon because it's small, friendly, and socially conscious. I moved from Silver Lake to Studio City last year but would never think of going anywhere else. -

I just got my hair cut by Megan Mcgill again=)!. Love her work, she always does my hair the way I want, and I will follow her where ever she goes=). Never cuts too much or less. It's hard to find a good hair stylist that's also fashion forward and will do exactly as you ask. Definitely go her if you're looking for something specific and in style. Plus she has great style and good taste in music.

I got to Modem Salon on a regular basis for waxing by the fabulous Rebecca. She is very meticulous and gentle. I recently went in for a facial from Rebecca and it was the first time I had ever gotten a facial. It was so relaxing and soothing. My skin was soft, refreshed, and CLEAN! It was amazing! I highly recommend Rebecca Razo at Modem Salon, ask for her!

Everything about this place is wonderful.
I hadn't colored my hair in almost 2 years, but luckily, the result from a lack of color upkeep was darker roots and lighter ends, aka, the "ombre" effect. Then the time had come where it was time to tweak it slightly to brighten it up a bit, so I knew I needed to find the right stylist to do the job. Well, I searched high and low and stumbled across Modem Salon. Read the raving reviews and found out a new stylist there specialized in this specific hair coloring technique, so I immediately booked an appointment. Glad I did.
First off, the salon is nestled in on Silver Lake Blvd and a beautiful, quaint salon it is. I received great service from the moment I arrived to when I left. Megan, the stylist, created magic on my hair-- the ends are brighted up and the dark-to-light contrast is so natural. Plus, she gave me a nice trim. Super sweet and knows what she's doing.
Point is, like other reviewers, I highly recommend Modem.
Bonus: I was offered a complimentary shoulder massage while my color processed -- hello! Book an appointment already. -

Lindsey at Modem is amazing! I moved to LA recently and couldn't find a good hairstylist/colorist to save me! I went to overpriced salons in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood and walked away frustrated and discouraged both times. I finally saw Lindsey, who was recommended by a friend, and I absolutely LOVE her! Not only is she really, really kind, but she is incredibly gifted at her job. She is the opposite of pretentious, but is by far the best colorist I've ever seen...and I've seen a lot of them in some very prestigious salons. I would highly recommend her to anyone. I believe she's only been in LA about 2 years, but once the word gets out about her, I think she could easily be one of the most coveted colorists/stylists in LA.
Another good thing, I got full hi-lights about 10 weeks ago. Just the other day, a girlfriend I see several times a week asked me if I just got my hair done. For someone always struggling to look like I don't color my hair, I consider this compliment the sign of a very talented colorist. -

Modem rocks.
I have gone off and on to Modem for over ten years now. You are wondering why I say off and on....right?
I have impossibly thick and curly hair (yeah, you can hate me) and I get fed up with it and shave my head for long periods of time...and yes, I am a guy...LOL
Originally, I went to Myrna who is the dynamo that runs this amazing salon....now I go to see Lindsey who is just as amazing! The first time I walked in with my giant curling mass of Conway Twitty Defying hair...she wasnt phased.
I told her what I wanted in a haircut (which very very few stylists can manage...which is why I say ef it and shave the whole thing)...and she did it...perfectly!
The thick curls fall naturally...close cut on the sides but not bubbleheaded...grows out amazingly even and looks great even a couple of months later with a bit of gel and left to air dry...
Lindsey is amazing...people stop me and ask where I get my hair cut...
So...if you want a haircut that falls perfect....needs minimal care...and will get you compliments....call Modem....book Lindsey or Myrna...and breathe a sigh of relief.
Oh...good quality haircuts cost money...so be ready for 65 bucks plus a well deserved tip...Lindsey is weeeeeeeeellll worth it! -

Just went to Modem for the first time ever and am really happy with everything I had done. First, I LOVE that it's one-stop shopping. They do hair, waxing, facials and massages all in one really cute spot on silverlake blvd. Today I got a haircut and tinted gloss with Megan and a brazilian wax from Rebecca. Both were very meticulous and careful. Rebecca was very gentle, so much so that I booked an appointment for a facial from her for next week. My haircut and color from Megan were awesome. She really took her time to make sure that everything was done perfectly. They also carry all sorts of great products like Kevin Murphy and Moroccan Oil. Highly recommended.

The products used during my facial was so amazing that the first time I had a facial my skin improved and pores shrunk immediately. I think that I have learned more about my skin from getting a facial from Anna than I have from anywhere else. I recommend Modem for their Isun facials definitely.

I went for a facial at this spa and was fascinated with the service and type of products used. It felt as though my skin hungered for each layer of nutrients placed on it. I was left with impeccably glowing skin. I will definitely be returning to this spa. I even purchased an eye cream that is 100% natural and really soothes the lines around my eyes. Thanks for a great experience! Ask for Rebecca R. when setting up an appointment for a facial. She is THE BEST!

I have to agree with everyone about Rebecca's facials! Definitely the best ever, heavenly! It wasn't an inexpensive facial, but really deluxe and my skin just drank in all the natural Isun products. I bought the sunscreen and an exfoliator mask product, and my skin has been loving them. Rebecca has the right touch, and everything felt and smelled so wonderful I was wafting into a visual-sensory experience, like having a DMT flashback! haha...I didn't tell her that ...well, maybe she'll read it ;) Darn now she'll be so popular I won't be able to get an appointment with her!

I went to Modem for the first time last week for a facial with Rebecca. I have had a few facials at other places before, but I must say, Rebecca blew me away! She gave me a thorough skin analysis and then tailored the treatment to my specific needs. She uses all-natural organic products that are very effective. Thanks to her WONDERFUL massage technique, I left the spa feeling soooo relaxed. All-in-all, it was a great experience, and my skin GLOWED for days!!

Lindsey is simply AMAZING, a hair genius. If you're looking for a new girl, she's it. GO SEE LINDSEY. I was extremely lucky to find her when I was searching the city for someone to do wedding hair and make-up. She really listened, worked quickly with confidence but didn't rush. She is a perfectionist. She did a great job for my wedding, exactly what I wanted, and did make-up for my mom, too, not an easy person to please when it comes to make-up. A week or so before the wedding she did my highlights and cut. I have never been more pleased with someone before. My most recent visit to Lindsey quite possibly qualifies for an award. After going blonde for my wedding and letting it grow out, I decided it was time to return to my natural hair color. Lindsey covered up the blonde PERFECTLY. I mean, perfectly. My haircut is awesome, too. She's totally adorable, too. When the haircut/color was all done she touched up my make-up.
If you're looking for someone who really listens, is great with ideas, can give you the perfect color and cut, she's your woman!!!! -

Lindsey is amazing! Bottom line, the girl has skills. Her cut and color are precise. But beyond that, she actually LISTENS to you. I am growing out my hair, and when I said I just wanted to "trim the ends," that is what she did. She also gives her suggestions/recommendations. She has a great eye and works with you to create something a little better than you imagined. Extra bonus, she is such a sweetheart. My sister goes to her as well, and said to me the last time she had a Lindsey visit: "My therapist never made me feel as happy as she does." That about says it. Go see her, you'll love her. Everyone does.

I love seeing Lindsey at Modem. I few months ago she gave me a "Brazilian Blowout", and it was amazing! I have curly/wavy hair, and when I went in, my hair was pretty damaged from color (from somewhere else). The process made my hair look and feel amazing. It was shiny and straight. I likened it to doll hair. It almost felt unreal it was so smooth. I have also seen Lindsey for my color and cuts before. She is great at giving you ideas for your hair. Her colors always look beautiful and natural. She is also super sweet which makes the whole experience really wonderful.

Lindsey is one of the sweetest people I've ever met! I braved the rain to go in for a cut on a whim. My hair had gotten ridiculously long, which usually prompts hair stylists to cook up crazy fantasy makeovers: some layers here, extra fringe there, and why not hack off 8 inches? Lindsey made my silky straight locks look beautiful, even on a damp and rainy day.

Go see Lindsey at Modem. For serious. She can do absolutely anything with creativity and ease. I have always struggled with my slightly frizzy, coarse jew fro, and I've jumped around from salon to salon a lot looking for someone that could do a great job with both cut and color. Lindsey has given me amazing hair and even though we've done lots of different colors and cuts over the two years I've been seeing her, it always looks amazing and she always gets exactly what I'm going for. Best evs.

YAY for Lindsey! She came highly recommended and was amazing. As with most things, I never know quite what I want or how to articulate it, and she was able to cobble together my blathering into a decisive plan--which turned out great. Best cut and color I've had in LA. Plus, she's smart and funny and nice and interesting. What else could you want besides cookies?

I went to Modem for the first time a week ago, and I am very pleased that I decided to try this salon. I had a good feeling from the start, since the person who made my appointment was extremely pleasant on the phone. Myrna, my stylist, is super down to earth and works with you to make sure you're happy. She gave me a cut that is easy for me to style, and amazingly gives my hair shape and body without the need to use a lot of product and blow drying. I have found my neighborhood salon!

I have been going to Modem, specifically Myrna (the owner), for close to 10 years! I have NEVER left there unhappy or unsure of my haircut and/or color because Myrna would not let that happen. She truly, truly cares about her clients and will do just about anything to make sure they are happy when they're in her salon and that they leave happy. She has tried new colors, techniques etc but she always, always knows what she is doing because she's constantly growing as a stylist. She always has new products that are great for your hair (yay Melu shampoo and conditioner!) and that don't contain tons of chemicals. You can just tell she loves what she does!
As other people have mentioned she is also a very active member of the local and global community . She cares about the world she lives in and the people in it, she is truly an inspiration in so many ways.
I always look forward to my appointments with her. So when you go to Modem be prepared to look hot, fell incredible and hear all about the wonderful things Myrna and Modem are doing!
P.S. Yes I live in Oakland now and YES I still go to Myrna when I'm in town, when you find an amazing stylist you don't give them up! -

Monique- get real. In today's world if you can't pay the rent and make it as a business you don't stay in business. You obviously didn't get sick, as I did, after eating at the Back Door Bakery. The public doesn't always have the facts of why businesses don't make it. Serving food in filthy conditions is one sure way to go out of business. Enough said, or I will get nauseaous thinking about the Back Door. Good riddance. Looking forward to a wonderful local bistro that will be clean and serve healthy food!
Modem is awsome. I have been going to Myrna for over ten years. I don't know of another business owner that takes more pride in her business and surroundings. I have lived in many cities across the US and frequented many salons. This it top notch and will stand on its own against any of the "name" salons. -

The coffee they serve is pretty good too. -

Los Angeles, CA
I've been a pleased and pampered client at Modem for many years, but I wanted to wait a few weeks before reviewing the latest treatment I received there.
Alleged to last 12 weeks, the unfortunately named Brazilian Blowout (think about it) has withstood the test of time, and I can now recommend it heartily. This treatment smoothed my hair to the degree that 4 weeks in, even when air-dried without additional styling, it's shiny and straight, as if I'd spent my usual begrudging half hour taming it with dryer and iron.
Though the Brazilian Blowout is a bit spendy, it's proved to be an excellent value for me, especially since I'm an underwater photographer and am in and out of the water as often as a seal. It's a gift from the universe (and Modem) that lets me shake out my wet hair and not worry that it will be a frizzy nightmare when it's dry. The shampoo and conditioner that accompany the treatment are also well worth the extra dough, and very possibly work some kind of magic on their own.
Even if you're not the perfect candidate for the Brazilian (ahem) Blowout, Modem is a fantastic salon and well worth a visit for any of the many other quality services they supply. Ask for Myrna, and tell her that Erin sent you. -
