Love it. Best South American/ Cuban food in the city!
Drinks get pricey but that's what happy hour is for.
Perfect spot to sit outside for a beautiful afternoon.

I had an hour to kill and some people to watch on a Sunday morning, so I decided to check out this hip restaurant where the young and beautiful hang out.

I was not particularly hungry but needed something to go with my mimosa, so I opted for the Arepa Rellena ''Reina Pepiada''(stuffed corn meal patty with a mix of chicken, avocado and mayo) instead of a full-blown breakfast or sandwich. Seeing that I had "health nut" written all over my forehead, my server assured me that they only use a small amount of mayo in the mixture and chicken is better than beef.

It was a good choice. I would definitely have this delightful mixture anytime over your mayo-laden chicken salad or tuna salad, though I didn't care for the cornmeal patty for its dense texture and bland taste.

I detected a bit of snobbery in the air, which a humble tourist might expect in this kind of trendy establishment but it's not something that a big girl like me can't handle.

This review is strictly for the happy hour experience here.

Went here on a drizzling, dreary day with my roommate hoping for some cheap food and good margaritas to perk me up from the weather.

We sit outside, and told we can still get the happy hour specials outside (aka-not at the bar). Since it's drizzling, we're the only ones outside, under the awning out from the rain. The waitress greets us curtly, and asks what we're drinking. We had to ask about the drink specials for happy hour, and she just agreed with what we said. Then she came back with our drinks, and we had to verify the food menu for happy hour (luckily I looked it up on Philadelphia weekly's happy hour guide before going), and the waitress didn't elaborate on anything, just kept agreeing with what we said. So we order some empanadas and skewers, they were average at best. The service was slow, and we constantly felt like we were annoying the waitress. The place wasn't packed and no one was dying to get outdoor seating since the weather was so crappy.

All-in-all, I want to like this place. It's 5 blocks from my place, and the prices are decent. I'll try it again, and hopefully edit my review. But as of right now, it was the worst happy hour experience I've had.

    I really like this place.
I have been here twice, and each time thought the beef dish I ordered was really good, and the drinks strong. Is it healthy? Probably not. They use lots of oil, and many of the dishes come with something fried. But, boy does it taste good!

I have been to Mixto quite a few times for dinner and happy hour drinks, but I've never had the pleasure of stopping in for brunch.  That all changed yesterday at approximately 11 AM.  The first floor was packed as we walked inside.  When they brought us up to the second floor dining area, my initial thought was, "Great, they're going to forget about us."  Not the case, though.  Our waitress was very attentive and it was kinda nice to be away from the chaos that was going on downstairs.

The menu was actually a lot bigger than I thought it would be.  I started things off right with a mimosa and then I ordered the vegetarian paella with vegan chorizo.  My God.  Not only was the portion huge (I was able to get three meals out of it), but it tasted like heaven.  The vegetables were extremely fresh, the dish was well seasoned, and it was literally cooked perfectly.  My guest ordered the Colombian breakfast (a big medley of rice, beans, steak, eggs, toast, polenta, and plantains) and cleaned his plate.  The coffee came out quickly when we finished and they didn't make us wait when we asked for our check.

All in all, I really do love Mixto.  I think this spot is more popular for dinner and drinks, but its brunch is definitely worth the trip.  Dare I say that they serve the perfect hangover breakfast?  I'll be back here soon for another brunch outing in the near future.

My fiance and I were just walking around the antique street and we decided to check out this little restaurant. The price was surprisingly reasonable, given its location. Even better was the food, my pulled pork stew was excellent, it was a large portion (I took half home), and the plantain was cooked just right. My fiance had the saffron rice, it was delicious too. We're definitely going back if we go to that area.

This is my favorite Philly restaurant for the following: reliably good food, nice atmosphere, downtown but off the beaten path, and sangria by the pitcher.  I've been here a million times and I'm the first to admit maybe it's a little over priced and the service is friendly but not awesome. But it's a quality experience for date night or a large group.

Let me recommend the paella, which comes in servings for one or two share. It's a huge portion either way and it's hard to find on a lot of other menus. For appetizers the guacamole and plantain chips is a must. Be careful not to fill up on the yummy table bread.

I love some of the other Latin places in town too but when I crave Mixto.

I've had several meals here (dinner and brunch), as well as been here in the upstairs bar for a Happy Hour. The brunch I had was awesome, and the servers were great. The brunch menu wasn't too big, but that didn't discount the amount of choices a person had to choose from for their meal.

I'm looking forward to going back there again soon. It's a great atmosphere, a really friendly place. Definitely a highly recommended place to check out in Center City.

I've passed this place more times than I can count yet had never been inside. There's a few things that surprised me about this place - the inside of the restaurant is actually pretty huge, and the food is pretty good. Although, I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the price/portion ratio of my Argentine steak. I paid a bit much for not enough.

The service was pleasant and I also had a mojito that was made pretty well. When in the mood for Latin American food, this place will definitely be a consideration again.

Great happy hour and a great brunch... I've never been for dinner, but if the food from those two services are any indication of what the full menu is like I can only assume that its equally good.  The empanadas are delicious, I have to stop myself during happy hour or I'll easily toss back too many of them.  I also appreciated the fried plantain chips with the guacamole, very tasty.

My only complaint is that I can't convince people to go here frequently since this pretty traditional Cuban food... meaning its pretty heavy on the fryer and butter.

First off let's get the one thing that kinda nags on me when I come here. I think that everything is a bit overpriced. Just shave off a penny here and there and I'd be a lot happier giving this four stars.

That said, I do love coming here especially for happy hour. Their empanadas are delicious, and I like chowing down on their guac and chips. Also half-price mojitos that are all dangerously delicious.

I've been here only a couple times for regular food and tried the vegetarian plate and cuban chicken with rice. The vegetarian plate was good, I thought the yucca and arepas were underseasoned, the plantains were good, and the avocados were nice. The chicken with rice was really flavorful.

Really though what brings this up to four stars is how enjoyable each of my experiences, I haven't given it a lot of thought, but this place for some reason just feels fun, it feels like the place you want to go if you're out in time for happy hour deals. The customers seem happy, the staff is memorable... in a good way.

What a disappointing place.  The meal started out great with tasty guava smoothie and fried sweet and green plantains. Then I bit into my entree (pernil rostisado) and literally couldn't take more than a few bites due to salt overload.  My boyfriend's ropa vieja was also overly salted.  The meal was terminated early.

Visited Mixto after an evening at the annual UPenn Mask and Wig production at their clubhouse on Quince Street.

I enjoyed the red sangria which was full of fresh fruit and well chilled. Unfortunately, the black bean soup was bland and lackluster. I appreciate that it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy, but would I would have liked to be overwhelmed by some kind of flavor. The tres leches cake was too soggy. I know that this traditional Mexican dessert is made with milk, but once it hit my tongue the cake's texture felt as if it had been marinating in liquid all day. Lastly, what's with the toasted bread they bring without butter? It seems out of place and like an afterthought "Well I guess we should serve the people bread, might as well toast it while we're at it".

The restaurant was also very drafty on that cold night and any time anyone opened the door, some kind of vacuum was created that prevented them from closing the door quickly and keeping the chilled air outside. I may visit again, but it looks like the repeat customers are just as puzzled by the underwhelming experience.

Great for groups, Mixto always delivers! The Ropa Vieja is superb, so tender and flavorful! The drinks are great, too. I like the décor, and the location is quite convenient to a lot of places for post-dinner revelry.

The prices aren't that bad, considering that this is some of the best Cuban in the city. I'd definitely recommend giving it a try if you haven't yet.

Mixto is a decent place to go, but Philadelphia has a strong showing of Cuban and Latin cuisine that Mixto often takes a back seat for me.

The drinks are pretty good and does the job quite nicely.

The food unfortunately falls a little flat for me. The flavors just didn't seem developed enough and some of the food was slightly bland. It left me wanting a little more. Nothing was particularly bad but at the same time, nothing was particularly exceptional.

The service was a bit slow, but the ambience is fun and makes up for that. Not a terrible place to go, but also not my first choice for Cuban/Latin/Floribbean cuisine in Philly.

Ok this place is GOOD! It's hard for me to find good Latin American food and the last time I had good Latin American food was my visit in Ecuador. Why who knew Philadelphia was a place with fantastic food and not just a place where Fresh Prince and Rocky is from!? This city is definitely underrated!

I got the Pallea Valenciana dish ($28). It's a  saffron broth, chicken, shrimp, lobster, calamari, octopus, mussels, cuban chorizo, scallops, clams, rice sweet plantains. YES all of that goodness in a dish! Everything was fresh. GET THIS!

Tip: Sit upstairs next to the window.

Mixto is has good food, with a great atmosphere and very attentive service.

I went here yesterday for a casual happy hour and was very satisfied. We ordered chicken empandads, all their skewers, and an order of calamari along with some drinks.

Cuban food is typically pretty greasy, and this place is no exception (however, it is not overly greasy).

The calamari was VERY good. Very soft and tender. The skewers were the happy hour special for $2 a skew. If you are hungry, these are not for you. They come with two small pieces of meat/fish with peppers and onions. They were small but delicious. All  the meats were tender and juicy. The chicken empandas were great too. The salsa they came with had the perfect kick to it that made me order a second.

The bread served is amazing. If they don't serve it to you, ASK FOR IT. It is pounded with butter, but so good.

Lastly, order the guava mojito. Any cuban loves guava. I've never had a guava mojito, but did at mixto, and was surprised on how good it was.

This is not a place I would go out of my way to go to, but definitely a place I wouldn't mind going to again.

Stumbled upon Mixto for  brunch while wandering around the morning of Superbowl Sunday 2012.

Cubano vibe for brunch, heck ya!

We were seated in the upstairs dining room.  Lot's of customers of Latino descent. Mostly 20 something hipsters, college kids with their parents, and a few surburbanites (like me).

The croissant french toast received high marks for being lighter and crispy without needing a lot of syrup to enhance the flavor.  You can skip the cream cheese topping and not miss the calories.

I had the pollo con arroz.  The chicken and rice dish had lots of chorizo sausage and lots of saffron.  The accompanying fried plantains were uninspired,  seemed kinda stale.

Vibe ... definitely latino sexy.   Perhaps I needed a brunch mojito.

I'd come back just to hang out ...and catch the view of pretty people.

I like how it is far enough away from Broad Street to avoid some of the theater traffic and also comfortable enough to avoid your neighbors conversation.  It is a fine Latin (not sure why they call it Cuban, except that they have mojitos) meal without the heavy spices and sauces.  A little heavy handed on the salt though.

Excellent mojitos.  Not necessary of the tradition, but they are pretty delicious.

Been here for dinner and brunch.  Both were equally consistent.  The sandwiches are very filling and make it a definitely good quick lunch.

Wooden chair rail , classic look to it.As we waited for all parties to join, we went upstairs. Gorgeous inside, sat by window.

Apparently, there was a mix up with the reservations. A night before our scheduled dinner, something came up and we needed to push the reservation to a later time.. only to find out.. they misplaced our reservation? It wasn't on file. Consequently, we had to make another one.

Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a homey, dark, and busy atmosphere - lots of people chatting and having a good time.

We were seated promptly and greeted by our waiter. After our orders were placed, we were served complimentary buttered bread, which is great to snack on. Don't get too carried away as they can fill you up.. sneaky little buggers!

For a shared appetizer, we ordered the empanadas. As for an entree, I ordered the Churrasco Argentino, which is a skirt steak served with a lime sauce (tasty and cooked to perfection!) The sauce definitely added a zing to it. For a drink, I had the guava smoothie. I could've done without it, though. It was somewhat bland and the consistency was too watery for my liking.

I did have to add this in though - as we finished our buttered bread, our entrees arrived shortly after. I thought to myself - what happened to the appetizers? ..Maybe it'll come out in a bit.

A couple minutes after we started on our entrees, the server stopped by and asked if we ordered the empanadas, to which we said yes. He then asked if we received them.. and we said no. He left to check the order, only returning to tell us (in these exact words) "My bad, I forgot to enter in the entree because I was busy..... with another table."

Well geez! I think I would've been fine with just "I forgot to enter in the order..." It's nice to know we weren't given 100% attention, tsk tsk.

The mishap didn't destroy my experience at Mixto, though. I would definitely come back here again - the food is well worth it!

This is easily one of my favorite places in the city of Philadelphia.  I've been here more times than I can count.  I even required this be the place to have dinner on my 21st birthday, some number of years ago....

If you go, you simply must try a pitcher of sangria (last time I was in they were $24, which if you're like me and my friends, will make your bill climb very quickly), especially their sparking peach.  They also serve this bread that is reminiscent of french toast, but tastes wonderful and its never-ending!

In terms of food, my standby is also the ropa vieja.  It's a fantastic stewed meat with all the right seasoning and served with a whole grilled plantain.  If going for brunch, get the steak and eggs or the Cuban breakfast.

I've never had a bad meal, and the servers are always friendly (and quite attractive).  This is a must in the City of Brotherly Love!

My friends first arranged a small birthday dinner here for me before and it was fantastic. Since then, I've visted this place several times. The atmosphere is as relaxed as it gets with tasteful Latin music in the background. It can get a little packed here during the busy times as the first floor seating gets filled up quickly but there more seating upstairs where there is a larger bar. The food is authentic and delicious - and the presentation of plates are gorgeous. I love coming here for the happy hour now and then with several friends - especially for their long list of mojitos. The waiters are attentive and have interesting personalities. There's a lot of energy in this place when it's busy but it's not too loud that you can't comfortably speak with another person across from you.

    Pros:
Great selection and quality of mojitos, margaritas, and smoothies.
    Good authentic food.
    Attentive waiters.
The place is cozy and energetic at the same time.
    Great for groups or dates.

    Cons:
The lighting is a little uneven sometimes. You might get a bright table or a pitch black table so it's hard to see your food.
Absolutely difficult to find street parking.
The front door takes extreme effort to open.

Besides the inconvenience of parking, this is a pretty good restaurant to hang out at and catch up in conversation. I would recommend carpooling or finding a garage with night rates.

MIxto ruined my rehearsal dinner. Yes, ruined it.

We scheduled our rehearsal dinner here MONTHS in advance. They knew we were coming, there is no excuse for the lack of attention and service we received at Mixto. We went with a set menu, again, we decided on the menu at least 3 months in advance, there should have been very little room for error, however, Mixto completely blew us off and I could never recommend this restuarant for any large groups, or any size group for that matter.

    Reasons being:
    1) We sat down at 7pm. We did not recieve our appetizers for another hour. Again, we had a set menu- we did not order anything at Mixto, it was all decided in advance.

    2) salads came out no less than 30 minutes after the appetizers were FINISHED, and the dressing came out 15 minutes after the salad. So when they put the dressing down for us to use, we were all done our salads, and realized at that point why they tasted so bad.

    3) The dinner entree came out another hour after, and they completely forgot our mashed potatoes, which my MIL had specifically requested. She had even called in advance to make sure we would get them, they said we would, but we didn't. By the time the food came out, my appetite was completely gone and I didn't eat anything. My diabetic friend had to leave since his blood sugar had dropped.

I had spoken with ALL of the managers here beforehand, and they were all accomodating at first, but none of them followed through in the execution of our event. I am so disappointed in Mixto, they really dropped the ball on this one. We will never return.

I liked the food, I had the churrasco argentino. Everything was good to okay, though the steak might have been a bit better. The rice and beans were okay.

Drawbacks: the price of the food for the quality/quantity was off. This place is charging from $5 to $8 too much for many of the entrees. Also, they have no beers on tap.

Finally, the waitress spilled something on me when she took the plates away.

Overall, I'd say try it out if you're in the mood.

I went to Mixto with a few friends for dinner on a Saturday night and it was fine, meh.

I ordered the vegetarian paella and it tasted good, but was mostly rice and some vegetables, which wasn't particularly satisfying.  It was supposed to have seitan in it, which would have fixed that issue.

In spite of this, the service was good, my friends enjoyed their meals, and we all had more than enough to eat with leftovers.

In conclusion, probably a good place to go, unless you're vegetarian.

    Loved the homey atmosphere!

Came here with a group of six to enjoy dinner before the holidays.  By the way, their Christmas tree was beautiful! On our table, we ordered a few appetizers and three salads: guacamole, mussels in white wine, trio de ceviche, spinach salad, hearts of palm salad, and the mango and avocado salad. Everything came all at once, so our table was a smorgasbord of deliciousness! We devoured every bite. My fave app was the ceviche, and my fave salad goes to the spinach salad. We cheered and toasted with the margaritas we ordered. I loved the mango one!

There are two floors for dining, and when I went upstairs to the bathroom, every diner looked happy :) Must be a good sign.

Mixto, I'll see you soon for brunch!

My girlfriend introduced me to this restraunt and I love her even more for doing so. The food here is superb!

I especially loved the Cuban style chicken and rice, as well as the Colombian churrasco. The fried bananas are great too..

The atmosphere is fun, upbeat and the servers are friendly and attentive.

I am definitely a fan and will be returning again and again.

Again.. the service just makes the experience bad.
Went with a group of 6 for a Sunday Brunch. Bad, slow service all around.. slow on drinks.. food took forever to come out.
Saw other tables come in later..be served and leave before us. Including a party of 20.
I really wanted to get dessert, because their Tres Leche is so good.. but after we finished our entrees.. and took a 1/2 hour to locate our waiter..again.. we had been there for 3 hours--we just grabbed the check & went.
I have no idea why service here can't be kicked up-- food is good, but I almost dont want to go back -- never knowing when it'll be this way -- yet again. Too bad.
